March 20th can't come soon enough.

I'm hoping this game will get me back into the RPG mood.

HellFire
March 12th, 2006, 15:12
It probably will.

It's just that you have to choose between loads of great games. :P So much to do in so little time...

Actually I'm afraid I won't touch it first week because of my sudden GRAW addiction :+

^indeed. Will this game have any online ability?

Curry

None whatsoever, completely single player.

As a good RPG should, I would add.

The "Chapter 5" movie on here has really intrigued me. It's suggesting that the AI is pretty much unscripted, and the NPCs will interact with the environment randomly in the same way as you. The bit where the woman in the bookshop casts a fireball spell on her dog :D

If this video really is as unscripted as it claims, it could be a really refreshing game where you never get the same game twice. However, I was having the same hopes just before Fable came out, and that proved to be a little bit of a letdown.

I've ordered the Collector's Edition today. The normal edition will be £49.99 in the shops, and I've found someone online selling the special edition for £49.99, so I'll consider it a free upgrade 8)

I remember a certain sequence involving a door in Half Life 2 that was claimed to be unscripted too ;)

What does the Collector Ed. offer?

Studley
March 13th, 2006, 19:28
* Pocket Guide to the Empire - A 112 page guide to every aspect of Tamriel, including its people, provinces and much more.
* Making of Oblivion Documentary - Includes a special behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of Oblivion.
* Septim Gold Coin - An authentic replicated Septim, the official currency of Tamriel.

There was a techdemo showing off an AI guy kicking in a door, Gordon then shoved a table in front of the door and the AI guy started shooting through the window or something like that. It was promised to be non scripted but it turned out to be a scripted event.

Ah the techdemo bit indeed. Yeah well at least that's the only time Valve lied (http://www.gamespot.com/features/6112889/index.html) to us during development :+

There's a new 30sec "Teaser Trailer" which shows the environments... how good does this look 8) (http://www.xbgl.com/news/new-oblivion-screens-and-teaser-trailer/346/)

Also, the game's received a 9.5 rating in the Official Xbox Magazine

March 15th, 2006, 20:11
I really want the game, there's no doubt about it. But i'm not sure if i trust OXM's scores as much. They gave 'Fight Night: Round 3' a 10. FN is a great game, but by no means is it perfect. Even in the magazine's review they said it didn't have enough boxers to choose from. If you're going to say something's perfect, then it's perfect. Either OXM should broaden their rating system from 1 to 100 (for example), or not lessen the 10. Do you really think FN is better than 'Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory' which got a 9.9? Sure, FN looks a lot better, but that's just because it's on the X360.

I'm done with my rant.

Rival24
March 15th, 2006, 20:16
I totally agree with you Chris. Don't give a game a 10 when it has some downsides. Gameplay is still the most important factor, and even if the graphics are worth an 11, you still have to look at the big picture to rate it.

Oh my god that sucks. I thought you were 'obliged' to send all the stuff from your Xbox360 to them. I would get extremely pissed on the phone and demand an immediate sollution.

If they don't find it in a couple of days just leave a message and we'll send the Xboxic terror Squad to germany.

i dont mean to steal this thread..but i am not an rpg fan and never got into any zelda type games. should i buy this? i was reading a review and it said you could play it as an adventure game, an action game, a stealth game, etc. and it sounds cool. i decided i'm not getting burnout after the demo, so i have $60 burning a hole in my pocket.

Chris
March 25th, 2006, 06:26
Get this game right now. If no stores are open, break into one of them and steal it. There ARE times when breaking and entering (and theft) is understandable, and this is one of those times.

March 25th, 2006, 19:02
So what race/class/sign did you guys choose, and what are you guys doing in the game right now (preferably without spoilers?)

I chose Redguard (decent warrior/armour skills), Bard (charisma/intelligence), sign of The Shadow (invisibility once a day), and thanks to a side-quest I now have a ring which allows me to breathe underwater, so I'm focusing on doing things in unusual ways, although I can swing a sword when I need to.

That said, I'm struggling on the main quest right now, I've got to slay five vampires but I can't even fight my way past the first one, I might tackle the Arena for a while to get my skills up.

Curry
March 25th, 2006, 21:46
I went for the easiest options first time round :) I am a Redguard Warrior, sign of the Warrior :P

Haven't played much yet regrettably, but it's been fun so far. I'm not too terribly impressed by the game though, it's not the end-all of RPG's as far as I'm concerned. Too many framedrops, strange underwater effects, people have faces that can talk but don't live, fighting lacks some immersion. Story is great so far though, and the graphics are at times very impressive, but the game as a whole doesn't deliver all its potential imho so far. I'm pretty sure the 200 hour story will make up for the other shortcoming probably :)

Hahaha, in a week? In your dreams!! :P I've played with mine for the last time the 26th of February. And yes, that's exactly a month ago, and I'm not joking! Yesterday they told me something which was like 'you might consider buying new parts yourself, it can take weeks'...

Oh, and if you want to know:
If you call them, you get London on the line. The service center is in Germany, they told me several times that they can't understand English in Germany. They can't call eachother, so it's almost impossible for them to communicate about the problems you have.
I call them every day, and I've NEVER spoken to the same person, there work like 200 people in there, sometimes they pick up the phone in another language? (while you've chosen yours from the menu)... It really gets out of control there...

They say at the phone it takes 8 to 10 working days. So that's 2 weeks, but the center in Germany is behind schedual so consider yourself lucky if you have it back by then. ;)

Edit: O, and never call them in the evening, the real people who acctually DO something only work between 9am and 5pm (UK - GMT time)

Think that's it for now, wrote away most of my frustrations :P Good Luck

Studley
March 26th, 2006, 01:46
Turnaround in the UK is brilliant, I sent my console back on a Tuesday and my new one arrived that Friday!

Well like a lot of people (I've been comparing your game progress!) I've opted to fight through the Arena to up my skills. However I've reached Gladiator rank and I'm seriously stumped now, I've got to fight three opponents at the same time and no matter what happens, my fatigue gets drained, I get knocked down and then taken to pieces.

Looks like I might have to take another diversion for a while, to find myself some magic which allows me to regenerate fatigue.

Loving the game by the way, I don't normally dabble beyond the Zelda style of RPGs, but this one's brilliant

Curry
March 26th, 2006, 15:24
What lvl is your character when you get that high in the Arena?

For the record I'm nearly level 4 having done some mini-quests, some main quest and the first 1.5 ranks of the fighter's guild.

Just go South of "The Imperial City" to the East of "The Green Road" its down in a medow. But if you pull out your weapon it WILL attack you. Just run up to it get on and warp to a city with stables.AND DONT LET THAT THING AROUND PEOPLE!!!

Yeah. Normally I'm not really into RPG's. Actually, I used to hate them (except for Zelda: Link to the Past, that shit owns). But I convinced myself that it would be good, so I bought it (the collector's edition even!), and boy, it turned out to be the best buy so far! I've played this game longer than COD2 and GRAW combined, and it's not even a multiplayer game!

Does anyone know how to stop being a vampire? It's very annoying not being able to walk around in daylight.

There is a quest you can do to get rid of vampirism, I'll check it when I get home tonight.

Yes. Constantly save your progress so you can go to the point right before you became a vampire and avoid the situation.

You know I tried but it didn’t work. Yea I can tell ya how to take care of that vamp problem...

Talk to a monk in a chapel and tell him about the disease and he'll sent you to the arcane univercity. Then the archmage will give you A quest with a witch south of the big city with a c----- chyllendil I think.

If you need more help with this let me know I can give you a step by step. I thought the vamp thing would be cool but, it’s to aggravating

How do you even get turned into a vampire, and what are the consequences (apart from not being able to walk in daylight).

I encountered my vampire during a thief mission looking for some boots in burial chamber under Imperial City. I really havent seen that many though. Also look under the Bloodworks, or if your doing the Dark brotherhood quest there 2nd in comand will turn ya if he like you enough.

Levels of Vampirism (check under active effects tab):
1. 0%: You suck. Go get Porphyric Hemophilia in the Sewers beneath the Bloodworks and sleep for 3 days.
2. 25% Weakling--but useful because... SUNLIGHT DOES NOT HURT YOU AT 25% VAMPRISM.
3. 50% to 75%: Fun powers! Stay out of the sun
4. 100%: UBER. Most NPC's hate you, and you're going to need SPF 100000 sunblock.

Also, being a Vampire adds to your stats, +5 at 25%, +10 at 50%, +15 at 75%, and +20 at 100%. The stat increases are to Vamp skills (obviously) Strength, Speed, Acrobatics, Willpower, Sneak, Mysticism, Illusion, Hand to Hand, Destruction, Athletics, and Resist Normal Weapons (Much less damage-if any-from all weapons except silver or enchanted weapons)

You also get Hunter's Sight (A spell combo of Night Eye and Detect Life) Resist Disease 100% and Resist Poison 100%, and you get other benefits/weaknesses depending on %:

25%
Weakness to fire +20
+5 to all Vamp stats

50%
Vampric Seduction (instant Charm on touch)
+10 to all Vamp stats

75%
Reign of Terror (fear-silence/demoralize area)
+15 to all Vamp stats

Vampire 100%
Embrace the Shadows (Invisibility (180 secs) + Night Eye (90 secs) )
+20 to all Vamp stats
Note: Most NPC's and merchants won't talk to you at this point.

Another note: You can feed from a sleeping person without waking them if your Sneak is high enough.

I heard of a situation where part of a quest was that you were supposed to go talk to someone, and since you can only go out at night everyone is asleep.

Also, there's certain people that are afraid of you so you can't complete some quests because they run away.

If you 'feed' on someone (who's sleeping), you can withstand sunlight again for a day or so. Also your skin is less pale so people aren't afraid of you anymore.

BTW, the easiest way to feed without having to break in people's homes is to feed on the people sleeping in the different guilds, or at least the guilds you're a member of.

Wait until midnight and go back to that guy at the waterfront. He'll probably say you didn't win the game, and he'll give you a new challenge, with only the other guy as a competitor.

BTW, I think it's not even possible to win it the first time. I found that house almost instantly, and still that bitch beat me to it.

Once you're in the thieves guild, you can let that guy at the waterfront clear you name, for half of the price of your current bounty. And yes, a 'clean record' means 'no bounty' in this game. Also, you don't need to 'keep' a clean record in the fighter's guild, you just need to be clean when you want to enter it, that's all.

I forget exactly how you kick off the "cure vampirism" mission, but you will have to go see this woman at Draekelow (sp?) she will send you off to gather 5 GRAND soul gems... the easiest way to find these is to fast travel to the Mage Guilds, and barter for them there... expect to pay about 300-400 apiece. The game is a "buy". I hadn't been following it until a few months before launch, but I bought it, and I'm glad I did. I'm 40 hours into it, and I've only scratched the surface of the main Quest. The game is truly amazing, graphically and interactively. The AI is the best to be seen, and the environments are incredibly immersive. The soundtrack, unlike SO MANY other games, is not repetetive, it is subtle, and comprised of nearly 30 different tracks, and it shifts appropriately depending on the setting, and action. There is so much to do in this game that two people can have a copletely different experience while persuing objectives. The combat is also a HUGE improvement over that of its predecessors, even Fable, which had a very managable combat system. Real time combat, with a slew of weapons, and an amazingly deep inventory make it a challenge, and fun to face tough opponents.

I can't stress enough how pretty the game is. The draw distance is astounding, and although people have complained about the areas loading on the fly a bit choppy, it is barely noticeable if you are merely walking across the landscape. Riding a horse a full speed may result in some hiccups from time to time, but overall the folks at Bathesda did an amazing job with crating this seamless world. You can literally walk from one corner of the map, to another, without ever sitting at a static load screen. The textures are rich, and mapped with the latest graphical tricks, and the lighting is superb. Of course the day has a natural time cycle taking you from day to night, and bringing random weather patterns across the map make for some very nice scenery changes, even if you've been to the area before.

I personally give this game a 95 out of 100. There are very few drawbacks to this game, but I wont be so ignorant as to give it a perfect score.

DO NOT!! I repeat do not put anything in a chest that’s valuable to you!!!! I herd every 3hrs all item are respawned (not the word im looking for but you get the point I hope).

You will have to buy a house to store all your goodies! I learned the hard way after putting 6 sigil stone in the Fighter Guild and when I came back to get them they where gone. The funny thing if you just drop something on the ground it will stay there.

Does anyone know of any merchants/traders with a large budget? I've got a batch of items (mainly rings and robes) which are each worth over 8000 gold (in total I'm carrying around the equivalent of about 70,000 gold!) but I can't find a merchant who'll pay a decent amount of money, most of the ones in the Imperial City are capped at about 1000 gold per item.

What sort of character are you?

If, like me, you're a bit of a fighter, signing up for the Imperial City Arena is a good move. You'll get some good fighting practice, you'll level up several times by the time you become Champion, and you'll make quite a lot of gold (although you'll probably spend about 25% of your earnings in A Fighting Chance in the Market district, getting your equipment repaired, unless you've found a good source of repair hammers). You'll lose health in the fights but there's a fountain by the arena exit which instantly replenishes your health, magicka and fatigue. So just save before the start of each fight, if you die then you have to do the fight again. After you've conquered the Arena, you'll be much stronger and better placed to do the other elements of the game (particularly some of the more full-on Main Quest missions).

...But then, that's just me, and the beauty of the game is that you can do what you damn well please :)

Repair hammers FTW. It raises your armorer skills. This can be quite handy when you start exploring large caves and you dont want to go back because of broken equipment. Keep in mind you need to be a journeyman to fix magical powered things.

Get yourself out of the sewers, steal a horse from the stables outside the Imperial City... and go for a Sunday drive.. If you just explore your ass off, it will help you later because you should have a lot of the places mapped out.

Just have fun!!1, I'm getting down to about 120 hrs and I’m seeing new things every time I turn this game on. Just last night I was looting a house when a lady walked up, so to keep her from calling the guard I talked to her to get this quest where I have to go into a painting and save her husband/boyfriend/love slave not sure which? I had to fight Painted Trolls with turpentine.

Be sure to get the download before you play it will make for a more exciting experience!

Studley
May 1st, 2006, 20:31
Yeah the painted trolls is bizarre but difficult, I spent ages trying to fight all of them until I realised that I could just use my 60sec Invisibility to get to the item you need, then used my adrenaline/speed boost to out-run them on the way back 8)

120 hours though :o That puts me to shame! I'm getting through the Thieves Guild missions at the moment, I've made all of my gold/fencing targets without any problem because I found a 1000G gem in an unlocked display case in one of the castles 8) Words can't describe just how brilliant it is when you discover something like that.

I am just getting into the thief missions right now (just completed the dark brotherhood..very cool)---but I'm having a problem with a part. When you steal the ring back from the countess....I went through the secret passage way, through the torture room...and up into her room..stole the ring out of the Jewelry box...and the game won't update my quest..the green arrow keeps leading me back to the jewelry box...but it is obviously empty...so I think I am doomed to never be able to complete the Thief's Guild missions.

I had a problem with this quest too. Make sure the countess is asleep, and pickpocket her as well. Im thinkn there are thwo rings you can get from this quest...

Studley
May 2nd, 2006, 21:01
From memory - the Countess actually has to be asleep in the bed for the correct ring to appear in the box (at other times there is just some generic ring in there).

I tried just pickpocketing it off her during the day, she wasn't having any of it :P

Same here I just tried to run in while she's at here dinner party and pickpocket her but it was a no go!!!!

Also if you do the Deadric Shrines quest close to that city you will have to go into the dinner hall and well im not going to spoil it but its worth the time... I might be wrong on the castle but Im thinking that's the same place. You need to do the Shrines anyway for the main quest so yea....

roflmao! Before you leave be sure to loot the place. I had a fascination with silver wear in the game I stole every piece I could get my hands on then, I went to a house in Bruma where I had killed the owner and now his house is TOTALLY FULL of silver wear...I wish I could take a screen shot of it, plus I’m not sure how much you can duplicate items before they start to disappear… I also have a house that has about 1000 watermelon in it...

I duplicated the items with a glitch. That why its 1000.

For my next experiment I'll be duplicating wine bottle and filling up someone home...Not sure which one Ill have to kill them first...muhahahahahaha

I draged this guy with me to the house and let him open a secret door for me and there it was; the skeleton of the SOB. After giving him is hand back (found it in a jar upstairs) he wakes up and kills me with 2 blows of his stick. I've tried everything, from magic to raw swordpower. The funniest thing happened to me the other night...

The final mission for the Thieves Guild is immensely long, I spent half an hour traipsing through a dungeon and at the end there is a set-piece where you need to fire an arrow into a slot. The problem is... as my archery skill is appalling, I ditched all of my bows :X

Luckily there was an archer skeleton nearby, so I didn't live to regret it too much

I've already unleashed all my powers on him, including my enchanted kintana blade, 2 very powerfull magic rod's (one with lightning, fire and ice all at once), some powerfull scrolls and all of my spells. Yes, it hurts him and yes he screamed it out of agony >:) , but all my effort was futile. I only took of like 10% of his energy and wasted several flasks of energy to heal myself in the process. After al those direct blows and all my effort, 10% was'nt good enough because he killed me with ease. i went to the arcane university and stole the arch-mages staff (before the thief guilds mission, it got put there again :? ), i have a khajiit so i have the eye of fear, (didnt buy the spell for invisibility till yesterday and i love it) , but anyway go to the lobby and teleport upstairs and that guy thats up there just hit him wit the eye of fear (yeah b*tch) before that i used my telekenisis and stole the glass ceremonial armor from the display case right across from him while behind his back (worthless by the way, but i love stealing from mage and fighters guilds as well as castles and anything in a display case its like my drug) and teleport upstairs while the AM is sleeping and if ur sneak is high enough (mine was at 83, i snuck a hell of a whole lot before joining the theives guild) and take the staff from him, and leave before that scared prick comes back, he'll just warn u, and go back to that haunted house. the staff hits with a fire damage of 80, i like to hit the ghost with a spell i bought from a guy in a temple thats for weakness to fire, then i hit them wit the staff like 6 or 7 times and he's done quicker than i can say GOOOOT DAMN THAT MU-F**** GOT IT, TAKE THAT!! lol. but it'll be done in like 8 secs or so, no more haunted problems, i also like to summon a scamp since he shoots fire. might not be ur character or the way u can do it, but it was a piece of cake for me this way.

my sneaks at 100 now, but in building to that the rush always came in when i stole from mages, and fighters guild, and castles, and big weapons from certain ppl. i love it, especially when im tryin to steal from the castle or guilds where everyones still awake, i love stealing from display cases when someones in the room with me, cuz all they have to do is turn around and im caught, not anymore since i bought an invisibility spell. as for the staff i wanna put that kinda spell on my ebony bow (favorite bow, also favorite weapon) but that staff is just so powerful umbra was another one i defeated with about 10-12 hits, i hit her with a dissentagrate (sp?) armor shot with sneak attack (x3 damage) and when she came up i hit her with the weakness to fire spell hit her twice with the staff, changed to my bow, poisoned my ebony arrow with paralize, she dropped, i switched to my staff, equipped drain health spell, hit her wit it while burning her ass to a crisp, by the time she got up she just needed two more blasts and she only touched me once and that was my fault cuz i didnt realize what was behind me and i hit the wall, oh and that fire atronauch (sp?) sucks, imo, he didnt do shit to help me he just stood around and laughed at me while i was fighting her, (she did kill me twice just in case, thats y i had to go get the big guns, my bows and sword and armor werent enough for her :'( ) the ice atronauch, or ice whatever is the only one so far whose had my back through thick and thin and the storm one just walks like he owns the world, that bastard has authoritaw in his step. this game is just too hot for any kinda noob gamer, its ridiculous. i especially love playin it, since i try and use lots of strategy in killin, not just swing away or shoot till they drop.

I used to find killing - particularly in the later Oblivion gates - quite difficult. Then I joined the Mage's Guild and earned myself a Staff Of Paralysis, one blow from this baby and enemies just topple over (often off bridges / into lava, which is VERY funny) and if they survive, I just carve up the static corpse 8)

I always get side tracked, something I've noticed is, there only seems to be 4 voice actors for everyone in the game. Hours at a time? It isn't too boring if you're playing it hours at a time.

....50 hours in and only lvl10 tho :(

That shows that the game is far from boring, and if you judge the whole Oblivion experience based on the fact that they only hired a limited number of voices....you're missing the big (huge) picture.

What about the fact there's about 4 guilds, (with each guild about equal to one current average game to complete) a main storyline quest (which is another whole complete game within itself), random quests that don't have to do with any guild, and over 1,000 NPCs with their own sepereate lives that they live. Not to mention countless other shit.

Yuh I agree I only noticed cos i'd become familiar pretty much with each actor after playing for so long, and voice acting in videogames has always been poor but I think its a lot less irritating than most .

You need to raise his disposition to 70 or above for him to go and check out the house, you can do this by bribing him (if you have alot of gold) persuading (shit mini game never realy got the hang of it) or by using a charm spell, i used a combination of all three and the spell was called captivate, cant remember where i found that tho -its such a big game!!

Have you done any of the glitches, as in the money glitches, or multiply items glitches? Those can screw up the game a bit and give it a faster chance at freezing.

Have you done any of the glitches, as in the money glitches, or multiply items glitches? Those can screw up the game a bit and give it a faster chance at freezing.
No I had it right from the start of the game (froze about 20 times before the emporer died). I realize now that my xbox probably is broken. The game also froze when I removed the hard drive from the xbox and the Chromehounds demo froze also...

Try the MEGA CACHE CLEANER THINGYMAJIGGERRRRR...

From the Dashboard>SYSTEM>MEMORY>Highlight your Hard Drive, press Y, press 'X X LB RB X X'

You will then need to download your updates again, but that's a complete cache cleaner.

I got a new xbox today (the store swaped the console, not the wiring for a new one) and now the game doesn't freeze like before. I got out of the sewers without it freezing. It has only frozen once now (when riding my horse to the town of Kwatch).

It didn't freeze, it's just SO boring that your brain disconnected itself from your eyes.

I agree with you on the demo, but multiplayer is VERY good. You can ask almost anyone who bought the game.
