Just got my new Premium 360 in the mail yesterday. I go play Ridge Racer 6 and it wants to autosave... I click no because it's not my game. When it wanted to do this one of the "blades" opened and showed the the HDD only had 12GB free. What's up with the other 8 gigs? They didn't need that much for running the 360 did they?

Well, it's being used for caching, backwards compatibility and that sort of stuff, you can't get rid of it.

That's fine... I just was curious what the 8 gigs was used for.

basically its used as some sort of safety net for whatever crap they may need you to have. Plus the backwards compatible is only possible through software installed on that HDD - which in itself might be 6GB with the other 2GB on the preinstalled gamerpics, video stuff and Hexic

I can't wait for the 60Gb HDD to be released. i think it's inevitable seeing that the PS3 offers that size...

It's Hexic HD, has to be bigger than 1GB.
I thought it was round 26MB but I could very well be way off

Of course, 1080P porno was there right from the start. Every region is featuring local girls (poor germans :+)

I bet Microsoft (if they even do it) will release a HDD that's greater than 60gigs.

I just hope that they price it resonably... chances are no.

Really though.. we still need to wait and see if the PS3 offers anything useful to use up all that space. How many games will come with an option to install files to load faster... that said, who wants to do that all the time?
Unless you're a consumer excited about the video market place I really can't see you needing more than what the 360 already has. There isn't much point in holding onto demos for too long, music should be streamed off a computer in your house, and movie trailers
There isn't enough Downloadable Content yet (like patches and game addons) for that to be a huge concern either...
IF MS does at any point release a new hard drives... they better go BIG, none of these small increments; I'd rather see a 120 than a 60... and again, with a heavy emphasis of Video Marketplace.
At this point in time MS does not have a public solution to move content (save files etc) from one hard drive to another. It may just be a huge headache.

Please do note that 2.5" harddisks are not as cheap as the common 3.5" counterparts. 120GB would make it some $250 at least including accessory profit margins and custom casing. They'll either release 60GB to match Sony or 80GB to trump them.

An even better idea would be to supply the casing that fits onto the system so that you could insert your own HDD, whatever size you wanted.
Of course, there would have to be some sort of Dash Update that would require it to partition properly and install the updates, either that or they made your current HDD stack on top of it.

It would be nice if an add on would be cheap... won't be though. :(

You can clear some of the crap that they pre-load on to the hard drive like movie trailers and videos and get about 15 or 16 gigs if I remember.
