View Full Version : Achievement Points

At times, I'm sure I come off as an Achievement Whore. But I don't just play any and every game in an attempt to get Achievements. I don't have King Kong, etc... And it's not as if I judge people based on their Achievement scores... (unless they have 80k+... and then I both envy them and pity them.) It's just an ongoing sense of accomplishment.
There are certain games... like Tomb Raider, or Tony Hawk's American Wasteland... that I would rent, enjoy for a time, and not really care if I complete them or not... Or like Kameo, where I'd play through half and not really care if I finish it and save Kameo's family or not... And I know they're not on this sytem, but games like Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9... I got to the point in the game where you can kill extra content / Weapons / etc... just before the last dungeon... and I got bored and quit. A lot of times in games the stories are never grasping, they never give you a feeling of "my god i want to beat this / find out what happens"...
Along come Achievements... a sense of accomplishment; a prize; a reward for your effort. Not a reason to pick up a game, but a reason to not put it down if you were mildly entertained by it.
Complaints:
1. The sense of accomplishment within each individual game is not as great as it once was unless it activates an Achievement. This might be my own problem, but I have a feeling I'm not the only one who suffers from this.
2. Game to game, the achievements are not equal. A game like Oblivion or Viva Pinata, which are both very fun to play, obtains 1000/1000 Achievement points a long time before all of the content in the game has been experienced. Sure, you could continue playing, because the games are indeed fun, but you accomplish nothing by doing so (see 1.). Compare this to every first person shooter, which requires hours upon hours of online play in order to achieve 1000/1000... and there's a very large inconsistency. I have to play a game like Perfect Dark beyond the point of fun in order to get 1000/1000, I have to play Oblivion / Viva Pinata for a fraction of the amount of time fun would be had in order to get 1000/1000.
Hmm.. I felt like I had another complaint... I'm sure I'll remember it eventually.

altho i agree in most aspects of what u are saying
took me 80 hrs of play to get all the achievements in Oblivion.... that isnt really that quick or easy
by the way... any1 with 1000 on Perfect Dark Zero.. let me shake your hand

i was just playing half life 2 on xbox and i ran into this problem. i haven't touched it in about two weeks. i really dont like tough online achievements that i know i'll never get, like 10000 kills in GOW. that achievement and the "climb to the top of the world leaderboard!" in games like graw just piss me off. my favorite sets of achievements (so far) are cod2 and oblivion. cod2 did not require countless hours of multiplayer, only abot 90 billion hours of single player. oblivion is also cool because otherwise,i'd finish the main story and give it back to the guy i borrowed it from. i'm not really an achievement collector either but i certainly love to get them.

Hmm, interesting discussion.
It's always nice to hear that special noise of when an Achievement is unlocked, and I'll confess I do play games longer than I normally would to try and get an Achievement. Having said that, I have never finished Oblivion, which I know are relatively straight forward to achieve. I just can't be bothered. Same with FPS': I know that if I put enoguh time into the game, I'll get them eventually, but I'm not prepared to do that for the simple fact it's a waste of time for me.

And that is a problem why ?
Let me tell you why ..... because you Sir are putting way too much weight into achievements. We had this argument before and it won't be any diffrent now. You're playing with achievements in mind, the actual goal(s) of a game seem to lose more and more importance to you.
Achievements are nothing but an added bonus to reward "grinding" in games. It all comes down to grinding if you think about it. Only exception are achievements that are beeing granted for finishing a chapter or something and those are actually not really achievements in the intended sense.
No matter how you look at it, it's just to keep you playing a little longer without having to provide CONTENT to accomplish that. Tie that into your GT and you're becoming an excellent example of how to shift a customers focus away from the product and towards an artificial community goal.
Now, I'm not saying achievements are bad. As always, bad is what ppl make of it :)
Really, you should'nt give a rats supersexy rearview about those achievements and just smile whenever you get one. But looking them up and playing to get them all ..... that's just absurd, sorry. But even then, as long as it entertains YOU it's all good. Just don't complain about achievements because that is where it gets really messed up :)

Maybe with Achievements they could eventually let you 'buy' things with them. It might add a little to the bonus idea. Sort of like Pepsi/Coke points or whatever that you get when you buy a 20oz.

I duno if i would want to actually spend my score / reduce it... But I would love it if say... Viva Pinata had a download on the Marketplace for a few new Pinatas and some Accessories... and you could only access it if you had 1000/1000.
Or an official Microsoft/Epic tournament for something like Gears of War... only people with 1000/1000 can enter the tournament...

When my 360 was running I was really into the achievements that it got to a point where other games on other consoles seemed boring because they didn't have them, but since my 360 died I recieved an old Gamecube for free from a friend and I bought Resident Evil 4 and a couple other games and have been enjoying the hell out of them. I'm glad I can enjoy games without having to win points because I'd rather have the gameplay drive me to keep playing and not the fact I can increase my gamerscore.

I can enjoy myself with other games as well, but I don't really feel to explore the extras in those games. Playing the games on all difficulties? Nah. I'm currently playing God of War on the PS2 and I'm not going to play that again on a higher difficulty level. If it was released on the Xbox 360, I would probably.

You know, I am kinda going through the same thing right now. Just that my 360 didn't even die .....
All the next-gen supergoodness is sitting in my living room, catching dust. Accompanied by a semi-high-end sound system, a 40" hdtv and a bunch of games. All sitting there, catching dust.
Instead of dwelling in all the high-tech-next-gen-goodies at my place I am spending most of my time right now very comfortably suited in my bedroom with my ps2 hooked up to my old sony sdtv playing Final Fantasy XII and when I am done with that I have Xenosaga Episode II and III still waiting for me (probably gonna play Ep I again too and do the whole (almost, except Xenogears) story in one go) and after that the US release of Rogue Galaxy or whatever that new SciFi rpg is called should be out. And then that's that for ps2 ..... but ... all without achievements or any online multiplayer mumbojumbo :)
I thought after getting the 360 I'd never touch my xbox, ps2 or gc again but all it really takes is a few games and all that next-gen stuff means nada, zero and zilch. Changes your perspective somewhat :)

I judge people soley on their gamerscore, despite race creed or color. This may seem harsh as I meet many people through work and elsewhere that don't have an xbox 360, these people fall into the "zero" category and rarely deserve my time. When meeting new people it's important to blurt out loudly "whats your gamerscore, my gamerscore is #_____?" Often you will be plagued with questions such as "who are you" and "what are you doing here", you will need to either mute these people or post a complaint regarding their conduct.
I hope this helps those of us who have lost touch with reality.
Post Script. the best gamerscore is always the one I have at that particular moment...

That's part of the reason I'm in love w/ achievements.
I was once like you jason! I'd buy a game, play it for a week or so, decide the story wasn't enough / the gameplay wasn't fun enough, and i'd go back to the World, where I could accomplish things, and what i did today was cumulative for tomorrow.
Then achievement points came out. And i finish games. And i enjoy that i finish them, i feel like i accomplished something, not just played a week storyline.
I LOVE DEAD RISING!!!!! And these achievements have made me play it soooo much, and it's awesome, and like viva pinata, i'm pretty dissapointed that i've almost 100% cleared the game.

Achievements rule. Renting games definitely helps, but I don't rent them specifically for the achievements, I rent them because they're £40-£50 in the shops.
For instance, I just played through Tomb Raider three times to unlock most of the achievements (Normal difficulty / Hard difficulty / Time Trial). But I'm not a whore, if I was then I'd play through it again to collect all of the secret tokens, but then I realised that I'd be doing that just for the points, which IS a bit sad.
Saying that, there's a real satisfaction when you get 100% completion of all of the achievements, but I've not done that for a while :( Unless you count Ms Pacman...

I love achievements. There is some games that I have played and will never get all or any from. I do rent most of my games from Gamefly. I just don't have the money anymore to go out and buy games like I use to. Plus some games I can beat in about 2 weeks and send it back. It helps weed out the games that I really want to spend my money on too.
It's a lot better when developers come up with great ways to get some of the achievements. Like Crackdown has one for juggling a vehicle in the air. Dead Rising had some great ones too. Any achievements that get you doing things that you might normally not do in a game are good ones. I see more of this in the future as devs. get more wild and crazy ideas.
But yes I am an achievement whore too, and damn proud of it. Hell I go back to old games every once and a while and try to unlock ones I haven't gotten yet.

Yeah but you have to be careful with that, as if the achievements are completely unrelated to the game and are really hard then they get even more frustrating. Like in Wik, the loopnastics achievements have absolutely nothing to do with beating the game, and are frustrating as hell.
I like achievements which force you to *check out* parts of the game you otherwise never would. Like for example, I never would've played CoD2 on the hardest difficulty if not for the achievements, but many of those levels were a lot of fun. I never would've even thought about trying for 1M points in Geo Wars if not for the achievements, yet I had a blast going for it (I still don't have the survived 1M, and I probably never will, but still...)
What I really hate are the tedious "play this game in this single mode for weeks and weeks and weeks" achievements. Like any of the multiplayer GoW achievements (10K kills especially). I also prefer achievements which can be gotten in single player rather than multiplayer. Actually ideally it should be up to the player which way to get them if possible, many XBLA games are starting to do this more and more which I like (ex Heavy Weapon and Small Arms had achievments which could be earned in either single or multi). Some gamers aren't hardcore enough to compete with the 1337 types who frequent ranked matches in games, so when there are online achievements it gets really hard for more casual gamers to get them.
The game I really liked the achievements in the most was Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I unlocked 14 achievements the first day I played it, and after that I was hooked (although I still don't have the hard difficulty or 4 player game achievements). It's really rewarding when achievements unlock at a steady clip in a game as it keeps you in that "oh just one more level" mindset (which of course can be bad as well, IIRC I skipped class that first day when I was playing MUA). ;)

I check achievements of my club members. Also I already mentioned how we use achievements to determine the winner of our monthly contests.
I will only look at a strangers achievement list, if he/she brags about having done something that can be proven. You would be amazed at how often someone bragged that X game was way too easy, and they finished it on the hardest level possible, without dying, blindfolded, but did not have the achievment to prove it.

I know this is not the Oblivion thread, but I have to post it here because it did affect my achievements.
While playing Oblivion, I met with the Speaker of the Dark Brotherhood. After talking to me, he then turned invisible and left. This is when the nearby guard saw him, and then attacked the Speaker (who was still invisible), that is when all hell broke loose and several other nearby peasants attacked the guard, and then even more guards showed up. By the end of the battle, one guard, 4 peasants and the Speaker laid dead. I was able to take the invisibility cloak from the dead (and still invisible Speaker), but lost the ability to join the Dark Brotherhood and thus getting that line of achievements.

Lol, Oblivion is so good yet so bad at the same time. Im stuck on the theives guild quest where you have to steel the ring out of some ladies jewellery box while she sleeps. Everytime I sneak into her bedroom and open her box the ring is never there. Its so annoying.

See, that's only a glitch because the world is so open ended that nothing's scripted except for the stories and quests of course. You've got some scripted events happening among unscripted NPCs which is where the havoc usually starts. Some would say that's a glitch, I'd say it's a real life situation(It's extremely subjective). Bethesda did a great job with most of the AI, it's just too good at thinking sometimes. That's what happens when you try and integrate scripted events into a huge natural world with mostly everyone thinking for themselves.

I agree completly. I was not angry, but amazed at how the guard noticed him dissapearing, noticed the cloak and attacked. It was also amazing to see the peasants come to the rescue of the Speaker, and then the guard, call for backup. The whole scene made my gaming experience unique, instead of just another scripted event. I hope that Bethesda keeps this up.:)
I was planning on starting a new character anyway for the expansion...no biggie.

PS/ At the time of this post, my score is currently at 31484.
Just an update....I have successfully completed my challenge. I am currently at 36094. I got 4610 in 25 days. No sports games where used to achieve this goal. I may now attempt to hit 40000 by April 28th...but I may need to tap a sports game or two for that one.

My score looks pretty rubbish in comparison :(
Still slowly making my way towards 15000, but a lot of the games that I'm really enjoying playing at the moment don't have many easy-to-get points. Games like Pro Evolution Soccer, where you have to play through an entire 40-game season - and win the league - just to get a 20pt achievement. Same with Test Drive - it's a great game, but I'll struggle to get many of the multiplayer achievements because nobody seems to play online any more...

If you checked out his gamertag, you'd see those game were Blazing Angels, Cars, and a couple of others ;). It looks like you just bought MotoGP 06 and if you bought it for achievements, beware it's not exactly the type of game that grants you 1000 points for doing little work lol. Actually, it's quite the opposite. I had a hard time with it which you can clearly see by those measly 140 points that I managed to unlock :P.

I can provide a list. Lets see.
TMNT(1000)
Eragon (1000)
Cars (100)
GRAW (125)
Blazing Angels (750)
Guitar Hero II (120)
Test Drive Unlimited (155)
Jet Pac Refueled (40)
Tetris Evolution (135)
Castlevania :SOTN (5)
Call of Duty 3 (330)
Prey (685)
Crackdown (100)
The Outfit (35)
TMNT:Arcade (20)
Pocket Bike Racer (10)
I think that is it...let me get Calc running here.....carry the one...yep...that is 4610
For the record, I actually own all these games. None where rented just to get achievement points.

Cool I was planning on renting TMNT and Cars, and was looking for a 3rd (I have a rent 2, get 1 free coupon), so I think Eragon might be the one I go with.
Hey, how hard did you find Blazing Angels, I just picked it up a couple weeks ago, and was going to really start playing it soon. So far I've played like 3 levels and haven't even come remotely close to an Ace time.
Thryon
April 8th, 2007, 23:31
Blazing Angels was extremely difficult. Finishing the game net you very little in points, you must finish ACE ranking to unlock all the planes, and this is required to get any achivement points. I have about 18 combat missions left to unlock the final achievements. For the record, I found Call of Duty 3 on veteran level easier. (notice I do not have that achievment, as I did not start a new game, but continued a game that was started in Normal by accident. While all the levels have been completed on Veteran, I did nto get the acheivement, and do not feel like doing it again.)

Yeah CoD2 was my first 1000/1000 as well. I was surprised as well at that feeling of accomplishment when I got that final "Achievement Unlocked" in that game. Was frustrating as hell at times, but was also super-fun at times as well.
So I've now played through TMNT, and should be finishing of Eragon as well today. I tried Cars yesterday, but I think I might give it a pass as I just can't get into it at all.

I turned veggie at the same time I became an animal rights protester at 16 when all the live veal and lamb exports were going on 1995 / 1996...(that was just teenage stuff) you might remember it from the news a lot back then. (maybe?)
But I always stayed veggie. I still can look at meat and get hungry especially at the new BBQ chicken advert for KFC...but I just don't eat it. I've not ate any meat in 11 years...I think I'd be hospitalised if I did.

Yeah I was at a few protests on the farms and at the docks. The protests weren't about animals being killed for their meat though like a lot of people thought. It was about that they weren't being treated humanely. All squashed in the lorries and then not even being killed humanely in France & Italy - people wanted the animals to be slaughtered in this country before being exported - but the french cut baby calves throats and hung them upside down cos they like the meat to be pure white, but the animals are still partially alive whilst hanging and having their throats cuts. They weren't even being stunned or killed outright first...it was awful...but im not a hippy vegetarian type.

Okay this thread has really gone off the rails into off-topic territory. :P
To bring things back to the topic of points:
Just an update....I have successfully completed my challenge. I am currently at 36094. I got 4610 in 25 days. No sports games where used to achieve this goal. I may now attempt to hit 40000 by April 28th...but I may need to tap a sports game or two for that one.
My turn to boast a bit: my birthday was yesterday (the 18th) and I wanted to get up to 17000 before then. I had a little over a month to do it (I started on the 14th of March). Not only did I do it, but I surpassed it by a couple thousand GS. From March 14th to April 13th, I earned a cumulative total of 7,585 GS. Of course, to get that, there were a couple sports titles in there. ;) The breakdown:
Crackdown - 830
Galaga - 185
NBA 2K6 - 1000
Open Season - 1000
College Hoops 2K6 - 1000
Jetpac - 150
Gears of War - 275
Marvel Ultimate Alliance - 65
Quake 4 - 80
TMNT - 1000
Eragon - 1000
Cars - 1000
So in one month I managed to complete 6 full retail games (granted they were all *really easy* ones), plus earn a few of time-consuming ones (like a few of the multiplayer Gears ones, a couple Quake 4 ones on harder difficulties, the Orbs in Crackdown, etc)
My gamerscore now (as of today which includes the additional 190 I've earned since the 13th) stands at 19,450. I should've tried for 20K for my birthday.... 8)7
Now I'm continuing working on some of those elusive online Gears achievements (which is not easy because I am at best an average Gears player), as well as Viva Pinata (which is a surprisingly good game). I also got Prey for my birthday yesterday, and a buddy of mine bought a cheap used copy of Earth Defence 2017 to play during our weekly co-op Xbox night. And on top of that, I'm pretty-well off work until the end of the month, so my GS should hit that 20K mark in notime.
And yes, for the record, I AM an achievement whore. 8)

Not only did I do it, but I surpassed it by a couple thousand GS. From March 14th to April 13th, I earned a cumulative total of 7,585 GS. Of course, to get that, there were a couple sports titles in there. ;)
Okay I outdid myself in the last month. In August I gained a cumulative total of 10,280 gamerscore. Waaaay too many easy titles for it to really be meaningful, but for the record:
Blazing Angels 1000
Madden 06 1000
Spyglass Board Games 195
Crackdown 350
3D Ultra Mini Golf 200
F4: ROTSS 1000
Shrek The 3rd 1000
X-Men 1000
Fight Night Round 3 1000
FIFA 06: RTFWC 50
Prey 250
Contra 75
NHL 07 1000
Madden NFL 07 810
Burnout Revenge 150
Track & Field 200
NBA Live 06 1000
With the exception of FIFA, Madden 07, Burnout and Spyglass, all games were completed to 100% during the month. And of those, Spyglass I've been a victim of the "Play 5 won't unlock" glitch, and Burnout has only 2 achievements left (Win 50 races and Win 40 crash events). So total of 13 games finished off (14 if you count Spyglass) and 8 of those were full 1000 gamerscores in the month. :)
Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your POV), September I have to go back to work/school, so I won't be able to devote the rediculous amount of time to my Xbox that I did in August. :+
