With the PS3 released today does anyone know anyone else whos intending on getting one? I'm not a x360 fanboy, as I also own a Wii, but i just can't see what all the fuss is about. The graphics are getting praise for being pretty good but the developers have had a year to hone their skill with the x360, so this is no suprise. Plus according to reivews the media connectivity is rubbish and the online is basic to say the least. Just can't see why people would pay more money for a machine that will at best be equal to the 360. :?

I've never played one either. The only RPGs I've played is marrowind, Oblivion, and zelda. There was one on gameboy i played ions ago, but don't remember what it was called. It was the same thing as the gens zelda though.

Out of interest have you sold it, from what i have been reading many PS3's on ebay are failing to sell for more than £400 (so are not selling at all) or the quite ridiculous 'buy it now' prices that are on there.

My brother bought one last Friday at launch and I have been playing a bit at the weekend.

So far though I am not really impressed, the games don't look anything particularly great most of them only run at 720p aswell which is strange considering one of Sony's big selling points is that it runs at 1080p.

The games I have played are
Resistance which seems a fairly average shooter that could easily have been handled on 360. As a launch game there is nothing new that we haven't seen on 360 yet. It is probably better than 360's launch shooter Perfect Dark Zero but Gears Of War blows it away.

Motorstorm is quite a decent game, the intro video looks amazingly impressive plus the extra vids included look great too. They involve footage of mountains and gorges which look absoultly stunning on a large HDTV. However it soons becomes all to apparant that the ingame graphics don't hold upto this very much. The game does look quite good but again nothing the 360 couldn't handle. It runs along quite smooth usually but I have noticed there is small bits with slowdown especially online.

Virtua Fighter 5 is the best game out of the three I played, the graphics look great and it runs at full 1080p. But as a fighter goes it's just Virtua Fighter that we have all played before. I prefer Soul Calibur and DOA. But it is good fun with mates playing winner stays on. This game is also coming to 360 at some point.

Overall for people who have played the 360, the PS3 doesn't offer anything new in terms of games at the moment. Although I know this will change in the future.

For PS2 owners obviously it is a huge improvment in graphics and online options. But as a 360 owner myself, I would rather stick with that.

The best stuff about PS3 so far is the Linux and HDD options, you can add videos and music to the HDD from memo sticks or flash pens.

Multi-player Gears is awesome though.

One of the best things about it is the inclusion of four characters, they so should have made that four player co op. Would have been awesome.

Hi guys, right ive just got back from my sisters house after 2/3 hour session with the PS3.

First thing you notice is that its a slick peice of kit and a great design (even if it is a dust magnet!)
I booted it up and started motorstorm. Took a while to load but eventually i was in a race on a motorbike, now when i first got my 360 back in 2005 i can distinctly remember bring blown away by the shear beauty of the graphics and the machine. With the PS3 i thought "yea looks pretty good", i wasnt aw struck like i was when i first booted my 360. Although this could be because im used to my 360's graphics.

Anyway, i had a quick lap on motorstorm and wasnt that impressed, yea it looked good but i have seen better on the 360.
So next i turned on the SIXAXIS motion senser, i tilted the controller the slightest bit and my bike turned 90 degrees! Its so hard to control, although i did get used to it after a while. I think it will be good for racing games but just a gimik really.
Insidently my friends dad is a rally driver and i let him have a go and he was damn good! so i guess it just requires skill

The wireless controls are very very light, the same design as the PS2 which is good if u have a PS2 but not if you have a 360. As the analogue on the 360 pad is (in my opinion) perfectly placed for comfort when you revert bck to PS2/PS3 pads your thumb aches.

I like the triggers, they are similar to the 360 but id say a little better designed.

The Wifi made for instant internet access ad i was straight on youtube watching peter kay sing 500 miles! This is a very cool feature but imo most gamers have a PC near their console so browsing the web wasnt really a big plus for me, but its a nice feature.

The PS3 interface is identical to that of the PSP with a few more tabs added, i wasnt really keen on this with the PSP and still im not really a fan, it doesnt look as slick as the console itself or as the 360 dash.

The console was very quiet, but when i play my 360 i dont hear it as i have tunes pumping out.. this brings m to my next point, you cant (as yet) listen to music during games, and u cant use your iPod or connect to a PC to stream from. I know the PS3 has a 60GB HDD but on my iTunes alone i have 36GB and i wouldnt want to spend all that time transfering it and using up half the HDD. You can connect a USB pen and lisen to music but unless anyo ne has a 30GB usb pen then all my tubes wouldt fit.

I did only try Motorstorm, he had COD3 and RFoM but he left them packed up as he is ebaying it in a few weeks.


Overall i was impressed, that said i still dont think its worth it. If you asked me if its worth getting id say:
Short answer: NO
Long answer : Still no at this moment in time, with the lack of games, online features and the cost id say either get a 360 or give the PS3 12-18 months. That is when we'll know if they are worth having but right now id say get an XBOX360.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention that the lack of Rumble was a BIG let down, u notice it so much when you dont have it if that makes sense, playing motorstorm u expect to feel the THUD! as you jump from a high cliff down onto a rock..but nothing, its like in VT3, you play it its good, turn on vibration and its great.

Personally i think TDU sucks, so that er leaves er....er.... o yeah Full Auto, Import Tuner Challenge, NFSMW&NFSC none of which i would buy. The other 2 i can think of are Ridge Racer 6 which is good but i never got around to buying and Burnout 4 which to be honest was very good but once finished that was it.

For me none of the above can come close to Motorstorm's gameplay let alone Graphics.

Here's hoping that Forza2 lives up to the hype.

Personally, I hate Six Axis' triggers so much. I played Motorstorm at my local store a few weeks back and pulling those triggers was so uncomfortable. Holding the 360 controler makes my fingers feel right at home :).

To Lotus111: It sold for 550EUR but the bidder was a fraud and I didn't know that because I wasn't home. So I'm putting it on again tomorrow. Btw I bought it for 480 so even if it sells for 500, I'll be still making a small profit (but not +2000$ as was the case with US :()

I think Test Drive is boring, but visually quite good. NFS: Carbon, is all in night time, so every level looks identical - The best racer I've seen is NFS: Most Wanted so far. PGR looks too much of a cartoon.

Yeah, they are bloody annoying. The same thing happened when I sold a Wii but luckily it sold for even more the second time (375EUR). I'm not too worried about not getting all that money back though :P.

I agree with the triggers thing you soon adapt and they work fine, the thing about this pad that i do prefer over the Xbox360 pad is everything works ***cough D-PAD cough***, Microsoft came close to having the best pad but just missed the bullseye.

I excepted when i brought it at £425 that it might drop by £100 in 6-8 months time, it could be worse my 42" Plasma cost me £1550 12 months ago its now available for £799. NOW THAT is a kick in the teeth.

Its also good to note, that 8+ major movie studios support Blu-Ray HD compared to only 3 or 4 supporting HD-DVD...which means there will be more variety of films on Blu-Ray than HD DVD....and although Im not a tech head, it must be better to watch a HD Movie on a HDTV with HDMI connection than through a HD DVD add on with VGA....I love my xbox to bits, but I was thinking about getting a stand alone movie player anyway and PS3 was the cheapest.

They all say limited offer but only time will tell if they keep price down. Personally £25 is neither here nor there when you are spending £500+ but it just makes it look better in the adverts when it says £399 and not £425 for the average joe.

My PS3 arrived today and as soon as I took it out of the packaging, it reminded me of a mini fridge, but in a good way, it's spectacular to look at before you even turn it on. I think the overall design of it is amazing!. I like the fact that you can put in any type of memory card for music, video's and pictures. The only let down is the controller, I think keeping the standard PS1, PS2 style is a good idea for familiarity - but the PS3 seems the lightest and cheap feel to it. Having built in easy setup wifi is great.

I like the way the cross bar is set out, with a similar friends list style as the xbox360 with offline, online modes, messages, recent players, friends list and a blocked list. It's also excellent that you can pair up any wireless headset for voice chat. The xbox360 live vision camera also works on it.

Although the 360 has a better online user system look to it, the PS3 has far superior downloads. The first game I downloaded was 680MB for Gran Turismo HD as it's free, and the second game was lemmings base pack which is also free, and the third item was the lemmings upgrade for just over £3.

Motorstorm is fantastic, Resistance Fall of Man is also my favourite as it reminds me of Call of Duty 3 with aliens, plus it supports up to 40 players online. There was no lagging and the online lobby is very similar to the 360. Visually theres no real difference between a 360 game and a PS3 game.

The most outstanding and amazing thing is the Blu Ray HD movie player, I think Sony have made a fantastic console and I am really pleased with my purchase. It really is money well spent and Im glad I bought one, because I've said a lot of negative things about it before even really getting my hands on one. Once you get one....you can't say the 360 is either better or worse. The PS3 HD built in movie player and wifi with upgradable 60GB harddrive is a big bonus, but the 360 has a more online orientated feel to it, easy to navigate - easier to find people online - but the 360 is very familiar to me, where as the PS3 im new too... plus Ive only a few games compared to over 20 360 games...so at the minute a lot of time is still spent on the 360.

That's because the PS3 only has a couple games worth owning. And all the people in the world can say "But the Xbox 360 didn't have any games this early!" but we'll, they'd be wrong. GRAW would've come out by now, Oblivion did too. Also, Dead Rising came out in April 06 (I think?). Fight Night was out too. All these games did amazingly well. AND the PS3 dev cycle has been going on even while the 360 launched (aka PS3 delays), so i'm not really sure how the excuses such as "These games don't look very good because they haven't been in development as long as the 360's has." Actually a lot of them have been, AND longer. Killzone anyone?

That was in August/September :). You made a good point there. I don't get how people (PS3 but sadly also Xbox 360 fans) forget about great games like PGR3 (didn't revolutionize the genre but it looked fucking amazing and it still does), COD2 (while not a first-party game, it still contributed a lot to the 360 sales), Condemned (haven't played it but I've heard many many good things about it), and also Kameo. I don't see how anybody could call the 360's launch line-up weak.

I really enjoyed Perfect Dark too :( The multiplayer bot modes in particular.

Still don't know anybody who owns a PS3 (unless you count Jay!), and I know a couple of people who were thinking about getting one but ended up getting a 360 for... well, for all the obviously-stated reasons.

However, I've been playing a LOT of Wii at parties lately, and can see myself buying one of those, purely for the fun pick-up-and-play games - Wii60 ftw :D

The controller is a bit weird to get used too. I keep picking up my 360 pad, its habbit!! The only good bit about the PS3 controller is that it's wireless, with plug and play bundled and no battery pack...it's all internal..

A few friends have said like how overpriced the PS3 is, but say I have the 360 for a min of 6yrs...based on 6yrs:

PS3 60gb with 2 games, 2controllers, HDMI cable & James Bond Blu-Ray Movie and six years PS3 Online service (£0) = £495.00

Xbox 360 premium 20gb with 2 games, 2 controllers, HD Component & six years 360 Online service (£39.99pa) = £599.94 before adding HD-DVD player addon if u wanted to keep it inline with PS3 for an extra £130.00 taking it to £729.94...although both consoles come with ethernet cable the PS3 has wireless built in and play and charge with no battery packs. To keep the xbox360 in line with the PS3 add an extra £60 for wireless & £10 for play and charge kit now makes a total of £799.94

The Xbox 360 is psycho-marketing...more expensive in the long term.
I just wish the PS3 tag profiles would say what games everyone owned rather than a 1 line motto comment.

Also whilst im here....the xbox360 live vision camera works on the PS3, but what exactly can you do with the camera on a PS3...???

Found something about the PS3 that pisses me off. When adding pictures and movies to the PSP from the PS3 hard drive, it doens't get swapped to the correct folder to play from the PSP memory stick. What a hassle, doesn't matter how you do it either, it won't work whether you copy the files to the stick directly or USB the PSP and copy them that way. Now THERE is a let down.

(if someone can get that to work please let me know).

Another minor hassle, streaming movies from the PS3 to the PSP seems to suffer a fair bout of lag. WTF, my CONNECTION KEPT TIMING OUT!

You have never played God of War 1!!!!!!!!!!!!, for me this is one the greatest games made, easily in my top ten games of all time i would say. A absolute must if you like hack&slash adventure platform games with some of the best graphics the PS2 will ever see. I finished it 3 times in about 4 weeks, i even completed it on the unbelievably difficult GOD mode a truly testing experience in itself. Just can't wait for the second one only 8 days to go. :7

Im not sure if it's upscaling, but when I put a PS2 game in it says 576i mode widescreen. The HDMI cable and console auto work together to get the best screen res...for my PS3 games it goes into 1080i auto but on some other PS3 games it goes 720p auto...

I deserve good feedback (I know you're not saying I don't lol) because I did everything he said. If I was to pay him back (never gonna happen), he would need to find my PS3 first. I doubt he's the one who has it, since he hasn't said a thing about me paying him back.

I really don't have any problem's with them at all, i will concede though that they could do with a little more travel (like the 360's) but they still work as does the rest of the pad. Not something i can say about the 360's D-Pad which quite frankly is close to be unusable and really lets the rest of what is a very good joypad down.

Yeah i have/own both games.

First off Gears does look good and probably is better than Resistance but not by much. You do have to take into account though that Gears is not a launch title and was released 1 year after the console was released, another thing to remember NEVER in a million years could Gears display 40 on screen characters all running around blowing the shit out of everyone with the level of detail it uses, so compromises had to be made to Resistance in that respect. While i am on the subject of online play although i do think Gears is good online i am very bored of it now, there are way to many faults/glitches with online play that really grate me at times, plus i prefer Deathmatch as i just want to jump in have a quick blast and leave so i really do prefer Resistance online to Gears. I am sure others will disagree as they prefer Teamplay but i don't.

When comparing the Single Player game Gears has Resistance easily beaten for the amazing set pieces and generally incredible levels. My only complaint with Gears was it was to easy and to short. Thats nit-picking though as it is in a class of it's own there really.

It is a little hard to compare Gears to anything on the BBC/Micro though as i would of thought there is more processing power in my mobile phone than in a BBC. What i will say though is we will never see the amazing jump in Graphics quality than the jump from 2D to 3D gave us. It is all going to be small steps towards Photo Realistic graphics from now on.

As for there being nothing on the PS3 as good as Gears you can't possibly say that as no one knows what is being made behind the scene's for both machines and the Unreal 3 engine that Gears uses is multi format, so in theory it is not an impossibility that Gears could come to the PS3 (never going to happen but it is possible).

Having said that i do remember reading that they are thinking of putting it on the PC, the only problem is that they will not drop the detail level down for the crappy PC's so you are going to need a powerful beast to run it. Personally i think if it come to PC they would have to increase the difficulty ALOT as with the mouse/keyboard combo at the moment this game would be so easy as to be no challenge what so ever. I think if Microsoft let this go to the PS3 it would be a naive stupid move of epic (no pun intended) proportions but the PC is no threat to the games consoles so it would be ok on there.

Having played and seen Resistance on some press events on 1080p LCDs, I can say it's nowhere close to Gears. The graphics frequently look like cardboard decors instead of blending in properly with eachother to make a convincing world like Gears'. It looks good, but not excellent.

That's the same for me, it's more my expensive movie player than a games console. It doesn't have a lot of great games, but the movies in blu-ray look really good. It is still after all a really cheap blu-ray player.

Yeah it's totally unexpected that this highly representative study of yours resulted in the predicted results.

I played Motorstorm this weekend, I liked what I saw, was a bit bummed out by the amount of times I got reset back to the track when I tried to to go off-track though. Resistance was fun to play but I haven't had enough time with it yet. I hope it drops in price soon, I'll pick it up when it's affordable and supports rumble. I cant afford to miss out on Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted and God of War 3.

How did you come to that conclusion then? who can you possibly tell, Rockstar haven't said a bloody thing about anything and yet you can determine that the 360 version will be better. Personally i would guess they would be identical except maybe if they choose to let you install the game on the PS3's hard drive (as many games do) it will reduce loading times.

As for Gran Turismo not being out it is simply that Kazunori Yamauchi (the desinger) is a notorious perfectionist, he stated that GT-HD was NOT good enough for the PS3 and so it was released for free as a demo, yet have you seen this game running, it looks and plays better than ANYTHING on the 360 (although Forza2 could change that) i personally would rather wait for a true Next-Gen version of GT rather than GT4 with high-res textures that is GT-HD.

There is absolutely no way that the PS3 is inferior to Xbox 360. I have owned a 360 (well 3 to be exact after freezing, red lights etc) and Microsofts console is a great machine. However, just like any new console during it early life there is a limited amount of 'killer apps' (360 waited a year for Gears) and they always have issued that need to be addressed. After deliberating heavily as whether or not to get a PS3 or not I decided to get one. Early impressions are very good, surprisingly so. For example, I fully expected the online side of PS3 to be a disaster, it is anything but.......it has work needing doing but Sony will rectify, for example they released update 1.7 which allows PES6 to run perfectly and fully online, not to mention Guitar Hero. There is far too much guff involving 360 vs PS3....both have great elements and will produce some class gaming experiences over there lifetime, admittedly PS3 has some catching up to do. However when you play the PS3 you truly get the feeling that its running the likes of Motorstorm (which say what you like does look bloody amazing) without even breaking a sweat, when the power of PS3 is truly harnessed......well. Anyway, either way, if you got a 360 or a PS3 you are gonna get some great gaming times ahead. Fanboys chill - if youre that fucking bothered buy both - then no-one loses out.

The PS3 is obviously a powerfull piece of kit but its my undestanding thats it harder to develop games on the ps3 than the 360. This is why I think the 360 version of gta will be better or more 'finished' if you like.

But if the games are goin to be same on both systems, as many people have posted, then why spend the extra money on the PS3 for the what is essentialy the same thing as the 360?

I think that just like with the PSP, the biggest problem with the PS3 is Sony themselves. They are too clouded by the rest of their divisions and priorities seem to be mixed- they're concentration on gaming seems to be distorted. Hopefully an identity crisis won't happen with the PS3 too, where people either use it for a movie player or gaming device- not both.

Don't count the PS3 out yet, it's to early to predict anything, all i will say is out of all my mates 4 have 360's (including me) and out of those 4 2 of us already have PS3's and out of the other 2, 1 is considering trading his 360 in for a PS3 and the other one is considering selling his Xbox360 and waiting for the price to drop on the PS3. The reason the one considering trading in is simple Gran Turismo and Resistance FOM's online part, the other one is the PSNetwork games, he was blown away by the fact he had recently paid £3.60 for Frogger and i paid £6.99 for Tekken 5 and £3.99 for Gripshift, is that reason enough to sell his 360(no in my opinion) but each to their own i guess.

I do think though that Sony really need to get the price down before say the end of November in time for Christmas. I think a sub £400 price point will seriously help sell it to the NON hardcore gaming public, as lets face it most of the hardcore have already brought it and it was the general gaming public that have brought 200 million Playstation 1+2's in the past. Im not sure how many Xbox's are out there but i would guess it's less than a quarter of that total, but thats a lot of people MS have to convert to their console.

Just my thought's, they might not make sense as i am tired, time to sleep.

at this time i'm a wii60 owner and have been thinking about getting a ps3 for a few weeks now but I want to know if there is anything like achievement points for the ps3 or if sony plans to do anything similar?
I know achievements are meaningless in the grand scheme of things but I need to have something to show for validating the time I spend playing video games. Plus I can get my wife involved if im stuck on an achievement. We are still working on finding that last elemental fruit in kameo.

Not at the moment but they will integrate their answer to Microsoft's achievements with Home service (launching in October) in the form of a trophy system. It won't be exactly like achievements (not as many per game I believe) but it should still give you a feeling of accomplishment. Plus, each trophy will be in modeled 3D, and will be put in your Hall of Fame (or whatever it's gonna be called).

I also think the 360 version will be better. If you've read the reviews or seen the pictures/videos from the same game on 360/PS3, the 360 versions look better 9/10 times. From what the reviews say, they play better also... the PS3 version usually is filled with frame rate drops and such.

I've played PS3 for ~10 hours total or so, so I can't really judge. From my personal experience, I am not impressed. I think the 360 is better, and costs 200$ less. The only thing I've seen so far on the PS3 is that the downloadable arcade games and such, are much better quality and cheaper than the 360 arcade titles.

It seems everyone I talk to online enjoys there PS3. I'm not sure if this is because they are trying to defend their purchase by making the console seem better or what... but I know 8 people with a PS3 in real life. 3 of them have xbox 360's too. The ones with Xbox 360 all think that it's better, and the PS3 is horribly under performing. One of them is thinking about selling it. Out of the other 4, 2 of them think the PS3 is amazing. The last two think's it's just OK, but are thinking about buying a 360. The two that think it is amazing have never played a 360. I dunno whether my friends are just retarded, or whether the few people who have one and go online are seriously saying PS3 is good.

I don't think the PS3 is crap, I just will not buy one until more than 3 titles I wish to play come out, and the system costs less than 400$ (Final Fantasy, God Of War 3, Kingdom Hearts 3). The 360 has at least 10 games I will be buying in 2007-2008. Before the 360, I had a PS2 and N64 and other systems. The most games I had for any console was 5. I usually rent/borrow games. The 360 already has me with 7 games that I've enjoyed anywhere from 80-100%. Motorstorm has thoroughly disappointed me, as well as Resistance.

When PS3 becomes 400$, and the 3 games I want come out ... I will be buying a PS3.

Not here in the UK, it would be more like a couple of percent. In America Wal-mart might have a bit of power but in the rest of the big wide world Wal-Mart are not such a mighty company, 290 Million people in America and 5.7 Billion in the rest of the world, quite a difference. So maybe Wal-Mart can force Americans into buying what they want but not the rest of the world.

Well i did think it would be a pathetic waste of time, but i am amazed at how sensitive the tilt controls work. I haven't played NBA2k7 so i have no idea what thats like, although in Flow a game that is totally controlled by the tilt axis it is extremely responsive and really impressed me. In Motorstorm i found the tilt controls were fine at high speed but at low speed were way to sensitive to be usable. So i think it's upto the game developers to integrate into their game's in a meaning full way instead of some after thought. Lair and Warhawk previews i have read say that the tilt controls work perfectly for flying.

I wouldn't say that i easily got my moneys worth out of it, but better than that watching my 3 year old nephew's face light up when he played it was worth about £500. He truly loved it and the fact he could play it with his 9yr old brother was a truly a moment that had to be witnessed.

Right now, the worst part of the 360 for me is the hardware reliability. Every time I turn on my 360, I fear it will break.

I'm sure towards the end of this year and into next, the PS3 will start getting good (especially with a price drop). But right now, there isn't anything at all that's compelling me to buy one.

Microsoft say that only 6% of x360's break down but i've heard the real number is closer to 35%. Which makes sense because alot of my mates have had to return theirs for a replacement.

My 360 is well over a year old, and I've been lucky enough that it hasn't broke down yet, but its probably only a matter of time!

ps. Bullet marsh graphics from the new gears map pack have got to be better than anything seen so far seen on the ps3!

You only have to look at the amount of 360's sold to the amount of Live players to know that it's single player that still rules. Plus i'm sure god of war 2 and the rest of the before mentioned games would be better when played with a friend online. It adds another dimension to the gameplay.

Spot on lotus the driving section was stupid and pointless, the campaign is much harder in co-op when played on hardcore level though.

Games would definately benefit from more co-op on line play, lets hope gears and resistance on the ps3 (i think this has coop online but haven't played it) are the sign of things to come. :)

I dont know about youz but I thought gears campaign came into its own when played with a friend over live, hence my comment on the online play. I think GRAW2 would have benefitted immensely from this too if the single player campaign was made online co-op. The extra live campaign missions just aren't the same. :)

Plus i'm sure god of war 2 and the rest of the before mentioned games would be better when played with a friend online. It adds another dimension to the gameplay.

Thats why i love online, not just for the player and ranked matches but for the co-op stuff with yer mates. :D

Basically you like it because its easy gamerscore?
