With Castlevania taking me completly by surprise it is slowly creeping up my XBLA chart of best games, and I own many (20). Additionaly, I belive the next XBLA game ( 3/28 ) will be 50! I've logged hundreds of hours into these games im about to list but I was just wondering what you guys think of my list and if you could please post yours, it might convince some people who are unfamiliar with XBLA games to check these games out. Well anyways, here it is....

1. LUMINES LIVE! ( I logged over 30 hrs into this game and its has only recently started to feel dull, but its a great pick-up and play game)

2. Castlevania:SOTN ( Absolutely amazing game, im at 37% right now and I'm loving it...must buy for everyone)

3. Marble Blast Ultra ( This was the first arcade game i was really addicted to, over 50 hrs into this game, played it extensively on Live aswell)

4. Geometry Wars ( Obviously on the Top 5, it was the game that kick started the XBLA, simply addicting)

5. Street Fighter II' HF ( Awesome game all around, quick access to online matches makes it a good time waster in between long hours of gameplay)

Well, thats it, i want to hear your opinions so please reply with a simple 1-5 if you wish. :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay so its been nearly five days since I posted this thread and I thought i would start keepoing tabs on the overall chart of the highest ranked XBLA games. There have been 19 lists posted with 28 games mentioned. So I developed a ranking system where a game given a #1 spot recieved 5 points, #2 recieved 4 and so on. Anyone who said that their list was in no particular order I gave each game 3 points. So anyways here is the list as of 10:55 P.M Eastern Time on March 29, I will continue to update when more replies are posted...

1. Geometry Wars (42)
2. Worms (32)
3. Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night (26)
4. Marble Blast Ultra (23)
5. Texas Hold' Em (19)

7. Cloning Clyde (16)
8. Hexic HD (13)

In no particular order:

Geometry Wars. Absolutely brilliant game that is well worth 400MSP.

Worms. A classic I couldn't resist buying.

Pac-Man. Need I say more? Ms. Pac-Man is just stupid though. No need for the same game twice.

UNO. Really good, party style fun.

Texas Hold'Em. A, it was free and B, I couldn't think of another XBLA game I have that deserves to be on this list.

OK, in no real order:

1. Worms because, well, it's Worms

2. Heavy Weapon because me and the crew had good fun playing that

3. Texas Hold 'Em because I have a passion for gambling, er, Poker

4. Outpost Kaloki X for being one of the few original, decent Arcade games

5. Marble Blast Ultra for being good multiplayer action, and a damn challenging single player

Well for me castlevania is my obvious number 1 simply because it is so huge and there is much to do.

At second I have to say Teenage mutant ninja turtles because once again it feels like a full game that I had fun on since getting it.

Hexic HD mainly because I still play it since my dad got me my 360 last year in August and it keeps me coming back for more.

Contra on co op mode was also something I liked and specially when I was playing it with this mate for hours.

Finally it was street fighter mainly because I missed doing Ryu's Haduke move. :D

- Heavy Weapon

And yes, I'm an original content fetishist :P

1. Texas Hold 'em - FREE :) and it's the only arcade game I've spent a lot of time playing
2. UNO - A fun game to play on Xbox Live
3. Geomety Wars - I didn't find it addicting because .... eerrrm I suck at it :( (my highest score: 192,000 - I KNOW, I KNOW, I suck)
4. Hexic HD - After I completed Kameo in Dec., this was the only other game I had and it comes pre-loaded on the HDD :)
5. Worms - I know many people love it but I kind of regret buying it ... especially after getting to know the low price of Castlevania :(

I have not been impressed with XBLA so far, but the following will be my top 5:
#1) Geometry Wars
#2) TMNT
#3) Uno
#4) Marble Blast Ultra
#5) Mortal Kombat 3

Hmm, a top 5 is hard, as I can't think of 5 that stand out above all others. Certainly Geo Wars would be up there, Heavy Weapon was great as well. Worms is one of the few I've played after getting 200/200, but given how disappointed I was with how much was left out (and how frustrating XBL multiplayer has become) it's difficult for me to think of it as a "top-5 ever" game. Mortal Kombat should get an honourable mention, as it's one I played a lot and certainly got my 800 points worth of fun out of. As an old-skool DOOMer I enjoyed DOOM, but certainly think 800 points was too much for it. I bought Galaga for the points, but I was surprised how much fun I had playing it.

Have I mentioned 5 titles yet? ;)

AugustusBot
March 26th, 2007, 19:13
I agree 5 is hard. Of all my purcahses, i'm only glad i made 3 of them.

1. Geometry Wars - hard to compare w/ castlevania. it's an amazing game, with infinite replay value.
2. Castlevania - hands down best arcade purchase to date.
3. Cloning Clyde - absolutely no replay value, but worth every dime for the one run through you get with it.

1. Cloning Clyde. My longest hours on XBLA. Congrats to Steve & Lane @ Ninja Bee for beeing the first to bring original content (they also delivered Outpost). Meeting Steve at GDC this year was also great, especialy realising how genuinely friendly he can be.

2. Worms!!!! Yeah! Immediate fun, superb gameplay balance. If you're lucky, you could share a beer (or more) with Martyn from Team 17 and see what a true enthousiast he is.

3. Cristal Quest. From another developer I had the priviledge to meet. Patrick from Stainless. Gee, these guys are cool.

4. Zuma. It's the first game that I got my team hooked up on when they did not beleive in Xbox360. It's well balanced, sweetly addictive and so... Aztec?

5. I would have to say Mad Tracks. I have been playing it for two years and still had fun with it this morning. It can't be all that bad. I just wish it could be out and in everyone's top 5 :)

Cheers!

I don't think I can order them. But my top 5 (out of about 20 I have!) are

Cloning Clyde (possibly number 1 as it's the only 360 game I have finished at 100% achievments)

Marble Blast Ultra, just a great 'game' very nicely balanced and with a control system that anyone can pick up.

geometry wars, real fun and you can just play one game.

Zuma a real one more go puzzle game.

Worms is a great game and it just sneaks past Uno into the top 5.

It will be intresting to see what changes over the next few months as more games are released ;)

1. Castlevania: SotN
Reasons: One of the best games i owned for PSX, and now one of the best games i own for XBLA. And becuase it's going to be one of the first games i fully 200'd.

2. Doom
Reasons: I remembered this game on windows 95 lol, and decided to buy it again and i loved it! Great Shooter at it's time.

3. Alien Hominid HD
Reasons: I love games like this or thats simular to the Metal slug series. plus it's a skillful game that you have to get use to. You can tell by all the people who wont buy it becuase "It's to hard" lmao.

4. Paperboy
Reasons: I actually still own the original cart for this game.. And after years of not playing i still like this game! But warning to all you other paperboys... Watch out when you try crossing the street, Drunk drivers...

5. Contra
Reasons: Like i said before I love games thats simular to Metal slug or in the catagory which is Side-scrollers. Plus i still own this for Nintendo aswell! :]

You played DOOM under Windows? That's just WRONG! :P (it was originally a DOS game released in 1991)

Completely off-topic, but I can remember playing DOOM on my 386SX 33Mhz (yes *megahertz*) with 1MB (yes *megabyte*) of RAM. It was around 15MB, and I only had a 40MB hard drive, so literally, the game used almost 40% of my entire hard disk. Had to shrink the screen size to about the size of a stamp to get it to run at a decent clip, but it was so worth it (it is my favourite video game of all time). The day I upgraded to a 486DX 100 with 8MB of RAM and a VESA video card was truly a great day as it was the first real chance I got to play it in it's full glory.

Ahh, the good old days....

very useful topic

worms is the best game for me. i also played geo. wars quite a bit back in the day. recently ive found assault heroes and novadrome to be quite fun. i also like the occasional lumines, astropop, luxor 2, heavy weapon, castlevania, uno, mutant storm, outpost kaloki and hexic.

i wish MS would release a free game every now and then like they did with uno and texas hold 'em for awhile.

Studley
April 23rd, 2007, 22:43
1. Geometry Wars - so, so good.

2. Lumines - OK they mucked up the pricing a bit, but this is a faithful and addictive adaptation of the PSP's only killer-app, so I actually saved myself about £150 by selling my PSP as soon as this came out :D

3. Uno - Can't say I was ever interested in the card game before this came out, but it works really well. Decent multiplayer community (if you can dodge the shockers on Live Vision), and it helped me to shed about 2 stone last summer - I used to play it whilst on my exercise bike for hours on end.

4. Cloning Clyde - The most original and surprising game on the Arcade to date, although it looks like Eets might match it.

5. Texas Hold Em - Well it was free, so no complaints there! Shame the cards are a bit hard to see (I've been caught out several times by mistaking a spade for a club) and the AI is awful, but it always is in poker games.

Worms doesn't feel quite like a complete game, the lack of backgrounds gets boring real quickly. They've still not tweaked the AI either, it's been like this since day one, the computer worms will either always blow themselves up or they'll be pinpoint accurate.

Marble Blast was a nice diversion but poorly supported (although didn't they blame Microsoft, they said they had a batch of new levels they wanted to release for free?)

Doom was a blast (literally) but WE WANT DOOM 2!

My Top 5 XBLA games are:

1: Worms - I like games where each time you play its tactically different.

2: Luxor 2 - Beats boredom, like a modern Zume with better backgrounds.

3: Texas Holdem Poker - Still waiting on Cam update.

4: Lumines - Fun, but I still can't beat Base mode.

5: UNO - Beats boredom, but was better before Live Vision

2. Geometry Wars - challenging and addictive
3. Alien Hominid HD - ditto

5. Texas Hold 'Em - the competition online is actually pretty horrible, but it was free and I like poker. so there you go.

But you shouldn't have to do that, it's just stupid. My internet died for a couple of weeks last year, and I couldn't play most of my arcade games because I'd had my console replaced. And everyone who upgrades to the 120GB HDD will experience the same thing. Damn annoying.

By the way, Eets has shot straight to the top of my list of favourite XBLA games - it's so addictive, and the 128ish levels should keep you going for months. And the Marsho Madness minigame is almost a standalone game in itself, I was ranked #3 in the world (until I just checked and I'm down to #25 - I'll climb back up there later!)

TOTALLY agree. I'm reading forum posts and some blog comments and I'm just floored that people actually side with ms on this issue at all.

WHAT A STUPID FUCKING SYSTEM.

They should allow you to go online, register a console or 2, and THOSE be the only ones that have licenses for the stuff your gamertag bought.

Then, when ms hardware inevitably dies (which of course it will), you can change the registered console easily and when you sign in again, it will update your offline licenses.

CURRENT SYSTEM = FUCKING RETARDED.

Correct me if I"m wrong, but don't the games tie themselves to the console and not the HDD, so if you replace the HDD the games will still work? Otherwise, how is it that you can store a game on either a HDD or a memory unit but still have it work on the console you purchased it on?

Studley
April 28th, 2007, 18:08
OK, maybe I misread the homepage news actually:

The second annoying part is to do with Arcade games. Movies cannot be transferred over so will have to watched before the process. Arcade games are even more annoying though. The content is tied to the console ID as will as the Live ID. For anyone who has had to replace their 360 at least once, you know where this is heading. Upon completion of the transfer, the Arcade games have moved to the Elite, and you can place the 120 GB on your new console. The problem now is the console ID is different. This therefore means that the Arcade games can no longer be played offline, because they revert back to demo form. If you are signed into Live then that’s fine, you get the full version. Also, other gamertags will no longer be able to play the games since it isn’t tied to their ‘tags, unless the original ‘tag holder is signed into Live.

But you've only got a different console ID if you've actually bought an Elite, not if you've bought just the hard drive. So not as bad as I thought.

Pedle Zelnip
May 1st, 2007, 07:46
Which to me is one more reason why I won't bother getting an elite, but might consider the 120 GB HDD
