PC or 360?
Edited for Rival:
PC Version is out, 360 version is a month away.
PC Version has Achievements, IF you have Vista. (Vista sucks w/ World of Warcraft I hear :()
PC Version has mouse+keyboard.
Considering that the 360 version doesnt even have Achievements as an advantage over PC, what reasons would there be to get it for 360? Won't the controls be lacking compared to PC? (Hotkeys.)

When I put this up today I thought both versions were released and I wanted to know which I should buy.

360 of course.
For the record, I do not do the PC gaming thing any more.
PC gaming is dead to me now. The whole SecuROM, StarForce issues have forced my hand away from the PC as a gaming system.
To be truthfull, the Xbox 360 is so much more fun. I need not worry about compatibility, drivers, or various apps that stop my system from playing games. Even patching is simplified and automated. And the money I save (used to pay $700 just for graphic cards), can go into actual games.

Enjoying the hell out of the PC version in the office, even though I don't like strategy games. \o/

I tried to the demo on my pc but couldn't enjoy it in its full glory, so I'm waiting for the 360 version which will give me better graphics and performance then my pc.
I'll take the hotkeys problem for granted and hope they will find a good solution for it on the 360..
You know, it's really hard not to go out and buy it anyway but I don't want to spoil my phun :)

I upgraded my pc a few days ago and c&c3 was somewhere in the pile of games I picked up to check how pretty pc games be be these days :)
It's very pretty and very old school c&c actually. Meaning there isn't much strategy in the rtS. It's the same old rushjob gameplay that initially made c&c so enjoyable and that's what will make the 360 version suffer.
While BFME2 got away pretty easily with the innovative (?) control scheme this won't work for c&c3 because it's not tailored to the relatively fast paced action, say compared to a rts behemoth like supreme commander.
But we shall see. In general I have to say that I was very surprised to find out that I do not enjoy playing on a pc much anymore, no matter how good and pretty the game is. Playing on a 40" HDTV with the comfort of my couch and a gamepad is priceless these days :)
So, next project is making my pc compatible with couch and tv :D

RTS on console has always been a problem. Some other PC games also have trouble porting just because of the controls. The best chance for an RTS on a console, along with a lot of strategy games, is probably on the Wii, just because of the control scheme, but as RTS are seeming to move towards heavier focus on graphics and unit numbers these days to survive against the big shooters and such, i doubt the wii could support some of the big name title RTS now, name C&C and Supreme Commander. i know some mid-range to high-ish PC's of my friends that are having trouble running those two at times. i suppose if it was specially coded and designed for the wii it could be. personally im more excited for strategy games like fire emblem for the wii that are coming out later this year.

I went ahead and picked it up for PC cuz some wow guildies were playing it as well.
Enjoying it a lot. I do want to cry at the loss of possibly Achievement Points, but oh well... maybe some of you guys convinced me at somepoint last year... is Fun possibly more worthwhile than an Achievement? Sigh. i guess so ! :)
I know C&C has done it from day one, but i just want to comment on how awesome and refreshing it is to have actors / video footage merged seamlessly into a game like this. They could easily use FMV or in game graphics for a lot of things, like when my commanding officer tells me he's sending me reinforcements... but they don't. They hired 4 noteworthy actors that most people playing the game know and enjoy... I think this is awesome.
When i'm 45 minutes into a mission, I'm creating vehichles and armymen, and Sawyer pops up on my screen... ahhh... incredible. I love this game.

You know... I don't think it would be too hard to Microsoft allow a mouse to be used with the 360.
I mean I have a USB keyboard back here and I can plug it into my 360 and type out messages to people on it. Using the arrow keys and the return and escape keys you can pretty much control the 360 dashboard. The only thing you can't do (unless I havn't figured it out yet) is open the guide blades like you do when you push the big ol' guide button on the controller.
So like I'm pretty sure they could update it to like use a USB keyboard and mouse.

This is Microsoft. Of course I wouldn't be surprised if they came up with a keyboard/mouse combo for the 360. Though it would be sweet, a 360 remote in one hand, and a keyboard/mouse next to you to do what the remote lacks.
I'd so totally buy that.
FoolInjection
April 7th, 2007, 17:31
I'd forgotten about the remote acctually... Forgot there was a guide button on that.
But yeah I could totally see Microsoft comming out with a 360 Mouse and Keyboard or at least providing support for a USB mouse as like I said you can already use a keyboard to manipulate the dashboard as it is.
My betting is though you probably wouldn't see such products avaliable untill Microsoft makes a desicion on wether the 360 needs internet access or not.
I think it was on here I read that they would only do so if there was a demand for it... or basicly if the ones on the Wii and on the PS3 prove to be very popular.
Arian
April 7th, 2007, 19:06
Fine, let's spam Microsoft with a demand for Keyboards and Mouse with a USB attachment. Guide button already installed in both.

Just played the tutorial mission. Controls seem.... average. Using the right-trigger to access all of the menus, and then the d-pad to select options, doesn't feel very natural. And unit selection is utter piss. Why can't I hold the A button and draw a box around units? The only option seems to be to select individual units, or select all units on screen.
There's some useful hotkeys to get to groups, build menus etc, but I forgot them all in the heat of battle :(
It's going to take some getting used to.

I just played the demo, and for an anti-C&C guy myself, it's not too bad. I disagree with Studley, I feel the controls are alright. (This is from a person who hasn't played the PC verion in years.)
Pity the game sucks though.

It's pretty cool that they've included Xbox Live play in the demo but It's fucking tough to select a single unit and have them carry out an action. You can't even use an engineer properly :(

Just finished playing it and was thinking exactly the same. I want to select some individual units in a quick way.. impossible.. Allthough I found a little trick they don't explain in the tutorial. The left bumper button (or what's it called. the one above the left trigger) can be used to select multiple units. Sort of like the shift key on the keyboard. Doesn't beat the box drawing, but it's atleast something. I do like the quick keys like: down for grouping the first available number to your selection, up to 'scroll' through the groups, right to select the nearest engineer etc..
Looks amazing too except for a bit of tearing here and there.. After playing the 2 missions I really want more. I just got a bit used to the controls and then the demo was over ;(

well i just played the training missions there is a large learning curve on the controls but i dont have a pc with high enough spec so if i want this game the only option for me is 360 version. It looks fairly pretty and keeps to the traditions of C&C so I may get it, but there are higher priority games for me.

I enjoyed the demo even after playing the game on the PC. I was pretty surprised at how well the controls worked.
As for the graphics, it looks identical to the PC one with every setting maxed. Overall, I'm not sure which version is a better investment. The 360 one seems faster paced, but its' harder to micro.

I played the demo, and found it fine, but I am not as sure it will be a launch day purchase. I think this game will be on Blockbusters used rack quite quickly. The only way I will pick it up on launch day, is if I can get it for less than $50 (Canadian).

I just tried the demo today after playing the pc version for a while now (not a whole lot tho). Somehow I liked the 360 version better overall. The controls are pretty good even tho they are toned DOWN bfme2 controls. But that actually makes it pretty quick to work with once you get the hang of it and stop translating pc controls to the 360 scheme in your head.
It plays slightly diffrent compared to the pc version but at least I think it's in a good way. The learning curve is a bit more steep than the pc version because you simply need to remember a few more things.
PC Graphics are definately better. The 360 seems to render in something like 1024x600 or even less (maybe 960x540) and then upscales the picture. If you look at the screenborders you can sometimes spot a few missing lines which is due to scaling. Also, the overall image quality isn't that great. There is tearing at sharp edges which also suggests pretty heavy upscaling.
Then again, my compare of the 2 versions may not be fair because the 360 outputs at 720p via component which I believe is upscaled and not native while my pc renders and outputs 1368x768 via hdmi. We'll know soon enough if this is just a demo limitation.

Judging from the XBL Demo, the controls arent SO bad. I could put up with them . The game would be nice though on Live skirmishing against someone.
But if I had to choose, I would definately take the PC version.

I spent some quality time with the full game now and I am enjoying it more than the pc version because I find it actually simpler to control.
The main problem ppl seem to have is that they play this (and also BfME2) like they would play the pc version which forces them to translate strategies and controls they *would* use on a pc to the console controls and that just can't end up going well for you.
I've said this already and I am repeating it here: If you play console RTS games you need to stop thinking like you would if you were playing the pc version. Controls are integral part of your strategy meaning you NEED to think diffrent, consider your control options. If you can do that you'll enoy this game a lot. If you can't the stick with the pc version. It's not like they are very diffrent other than the tutorial anyway. So pick whatever fits your playstyle best.
PS: [OFFTOPIC] I also grabbed a copy of Two Worlds for the PC today and couldn't even get it to work on 2 out of three 3 pc's. There's also already a patch which doesn't even fix the worst problems. I returned it. Stay clear of that one, wait for the 360 version if you must play it because that one will at least benefit from some QA at M$ cert and Microsoft will have their balls for lunch if they don't fix the worst bugs that show up after certification.

Ive been playing the demo online with friends as in (in the UK) C&C3 came out on friday for the 360 im heading down to my local GameStation to buy it. Does anyone know if GS have one of them offers on C&C3? Where instead of the RRP of £45 or £50 they have it at £40.
I like those :P
Oh, and I prefer the 360 version for 1 reason. I had a Dell XPS PC and (this may sound dumb) but it actually melted the back of the case due to overheating (even though the fan was still running) this due to me playing games constantly (counter-strike, C&C, Halo CE etc.) so after that the only PC game I bother with is CS1.6 if theres a alternative of 360 or PS3.
Anyway, best be off to buy this now :D

Well I have the full game, and I am loving it. I have played it on PC 2, the games seem to be exactly the same to me,. although I do think they should have added drag boxes but thats my only control scheme complaint. Obviously the mouse and keyboard have their advantages but the pad works fine. If they let RTS gamers use mice on 360 then they would have to let FPS users use them and then games would become very unbalanced.
All in all, if you cannot afford an uber PC or want to try a different take on a well establised genre I think 360 CnC kicks arse.
