What are people wanting from the dashboard over the next year and beyond?

I personally would love to see more for music, at least being able to see what song/artist people on your friends list are listening to... maybe with the possiblilty to stream it... maybe not song by song...like send a request to a friend whos listening to music, if said friend accepts, then it links you to them and you can hear whatever music is coming from their 360. im sure it could be done.

Any thoughts?

rss feeds reader, podcast support, hotmail reader (since you tie your passport to your live account this seems an oversight to me), web browser maybe (will come into its own once hd tv's are the norm, would also allow you to use links in the rss reader), group chat?? duno if I would use it, clan support. Video lobbies, for the "I owned you arse" dances that would be done.

Most importantly I would like to be able to browse the recent players list and invite to game with just 1 click like you do on the friends rather than have to access their gamer profile and invite that way, seems a bit retarded in its current form.

Streaming music is all very well but would require a large amount of bandwidth.

dont know why microsoft doesnt partner with knoppix or suse to release a live cd version of linux and have the console make a partition on the drive for permanent data and settings, plenty of people would buy it/download it.

It should definitely get more features for interaction online and more regular shortcuts and the like. I'm personally highly interested to find out what we'll be seeing in the spring update :)

Personally, I would like to see what the heck is in my disc tray like EVERY OTHER CONSOLE OUT THERE since the Dreamcast! (ridiculous).

I would like to better integration of the links for Marketplace and maybe some basic animation for music/video links (maybe short previews play when you highlight a movie) and a way to 'search" for songs or artists by entering specific letter(s).

Support for an external hard drive like the PS3 currently supports for demos/movies/music use instead of buying that overpriced new 120g hard drive that will be out soon.

The ability to adjust the speed of the DVD read speed so it doesn't sound like a jet plane is taking off ALL THE TIME while I play a 360 game (original Xbox games sound fine btw).

Improve the DVD playback. Trust me, its FULL of "jaggies" and needs to be cleaned up.

Rant over. Other then the above stuff, I like my 360. ;)

Oh - component ! yeah DVD on that looks the same way that standard tv does on a HD TV screen. The only way I can describe it is that it looks the way over-stretched, over compressed JPEG images do on a PC where all the edges are blocky...

Maybe the addition of favorites. I would like to be able to flag music, picture, videos as favorites for quick retrieval.

Also improve the media blade. When I click on videos, it can take a minute to bring up my list of 20 videos. This only affects non-US accounts, and with the same console, when I logon with my US account, it is very fast. Must be related to their marketplace.

Yeah hence "spring update" and you say update like theres only been and ever will be one...Microsoft said something along the lines of two major dashboard updates a year. I'm not sure if thats still the case. but yeah.

I did some more reading on MPEG-4 and it's quite a complex piece of work. You have different parts, part 2 is about video encoding and part 3 is about audio encoding for example, and those are further divided by different profiles. On another forum (where I got the pics of the keyboard add-on for the controller from), someone brought up a few interesting points:

The profiles for example, the changelog says "Simple Profile [...] and Main Profiles". DivX/Xvid are Advanced Simple Profile codecs, and the Simple profile is a subset of the Advanced Simple profile for devices like cell phones, lacking processing power. According to Wikipedia there are ~21 profiles but only Simple and Advanced Simple are explained in detail. If the Advanced Simple Profile features are also in the Main profile it should work I guess...

Another point would be the file container. Currently, the 360 supports ASF and MPEG Program Stream, no AVI. On the other hand, I think it's less CPU intensive to get a video stream from one container format and put it in another container format (like copying from a FAT32 disk to a NTFS one, only the way it's stored is different) then it would be to decode the videostream from one container and to re-encode that to another codec in another container (typing over handwritten notes in Word :P).

I'm no expert on the matter but I'd say we'll have to wait and see, although there's seems to be a shimmer of hope.

I don't expect Xbox 360 to support ASF, since PS3 doesn't either. Not much point in supporting a format that's literally only used for ripped movies.

Yeah there's so much file conversion stuff - couldn't you just convert the file to a suitable one?...im not hot on movie ripping or downloading seeing as I can't say I watch a film more than once generally so I just rent them or ones that look really good I buy

As far as im aware its a definate, its just when, i really thought it would be here with this update...but then i thought there would be group voice chat with the last one...but noooooo. but my 360 is going away today anyway...just waiting for UPS to collect it.. then i just wait for my THIRD 360 to come to me...lets hope this one doesnt fuck up...HAHAHAHAHHAHA!!!

Lol, yeah my 360 has broken down twice now, the dreaded 3 red lights both times!

On the plus side, the UPS service seems to be good, as does the repair centre(s). Both time the consoles have been fixed/replaced in less than 7 days.

Group video chat would be awesome!

I'm so pissed that 16:10 resolution support isn't scheduled for the upcoming Dash update. I play my 360 on my 19" widescreen monitor, but have to use a non-native resolution (which results in a bit lowered quality).

Can't use MSN on my 360!!! It says that you can't use Wnindows Live Messenger on a Windows Live child account or something like that. Maybe it's because I had to use parental settings when I got my 360 in order to be able to use Xbox Live (I was 17 at the time). Does anybody know how to turn the parental settings off?

Yeah i got the small window working, someone on the FP said windows key+M, maybe Jay..? well it works, but it seems your pad doesnt work, meaning you cant have that up and carry on playing, but i have only tested it on dashboard so far, i did it about two minutes ago, so i'll load a game soon and tell you how it goes:)

Only one thing bothers me and that's the installing of games on your HDD. What good is it to copy them to disk when you still need to get up from your couch to swap disks? Can't they just add a licence which connects your gametag and machine to that copy like they do with live games? pff..

Remember this is a clean generic dash for the public and that you will most likely be able to customize it to your non-kiddy-like preferences.

I am only speculating of course, for I was only provided the same info you got, but Microsoft does appear to understand the need to personalize your console to your likings.

According to what I've read somewhere your old themes will still work on the new dash. This new dash design is mandatory and is a replacement for the current one because the current one was designed for hundreds of items, not for the current thousand or millions of items on the marketplace and stuff.
