View Full Version : Anyone else having console problems?
Homer
March 27th, 2006, 16:53
I have had to send my son's 360 back to microsoft twice now. I just got it back and had to call them back the same day. It's really frustrating to pay that much for a console and microsoft have it more than we do. Has anyone else had similar issues?

Ask etalien on this forum :+, he's currently at war with Microsoft because they lost his harddrive after he sent it to them for the 2nd time. You're probably just having some bad luck Homer. The only thing that could be on your end is some power fluctuations on your outlets, or your xbox isn't properly ventilated. Those are the only things i can really think of.
Keep us posted please :)

Just got the three flashing red lights yesterday..... a buddy called me up wanting to play graw and when I tried to play it kept freezing up then it just totally quit working. Called m$ and they told me that having the console sitting on carpet would make the lights come on:? So I placed it on my dresser with nothing around it and it still didnt work!!! There suposed to be sending me a box to place it in and ship it back to them....anybody know how long this will take??? I just hope its back in time for battlefield:'(

Mine's off to MS too,
UPS picked it up topday.
Think its got some heating problems cause it kept freezing while playing.
Oh well, nothing but good news from the MS service station (not entirely true, etalien is an exeption ;)). As long as it dont happens after this and they send it back quick i dont have a problem.

8)7 I hate it that I'm the only one with problems, mine is gone for a month now, and they forgot to send back the harddrive and poweradapter. They blame me for this because I didn't label them seperately :X They didn't tell me to do that at all :X Just placed it all in one box.
Anyway, I can't buy a seperate Poweradapter with them, and since they've lost my previous and they keep saying it takes another '2 or 3 weeks' before they might know something more, they today gave me the option to buy a COMPLETELY NEW Xbox 360 Premium for 400 euro's :X

lol, i put in a description in my package in 3 different languages, Dutch, English and German, i printed that 3x and ducktaped one on my console, one on my harddisk and one on top of the box, they must be really stupid to fuck that up then :) I've had bad experiences with this kinda problems (acer laptop went to germany too and came back without a power adapter, it still isnt here, sound familiar?) and since then i make sure my package is fool-proof and there is no useless stuff inside my package (like the power adapter wich i did not have to send).

I've never had console issues with Microsoft. Sony... well... don't get me started. But by any chance, Homer, is your Son's 360 vertical (standing up) or horizontal (lying down). Mine is horizontal and I have no problems. However, one of my friends does, and his is vertical.

Semi Thread Jacking.
I was just talking about this with a guy from EBgames; he said to run it vertical. Now I have a problem with this since my 360 ate my call of duty disc. Plus every 360 you see in pics or at stores is vertical so could somebody let me in on the issue?:?

I ran mine vertical from day 1 and mine crapped out last week.... I wouldnt think that how you place your system (horizontal or vertical) would determine if thats what causes problems. Ive been without mine for a week now and hate it :r

I had my first one from the UK release date, started to crash every 2 mins about 2 weeks ago. Sent it off to Microsoft and got a 'new' (was made in february, I reckon it's a refurb) one 3 days later. Played Fight Night for about an hour, no probs. Switched over to watch telly for a bit and then I noticed the whole ring of light flashing red. Has worked alright after a restart so far. Waiting to see if it happens again.
Typical Microsoft stability; I wouldn't be suprised if the xbox is running Windows 95

It's for the best of your console to put it horizontally on a stable surface. Because every point at the disc is at the same hight at the same time it's more stable as a vertical standing console. But either way it should be safe if you don't move your console while spinning a disc so it's better to take a look at how stable your console is standing as considering wheter you should put it horizontally or vertically (mines put horizontally cause i'm afraid someone will bump it of my nightstand (yup addicted) but vertically does look way cooler).

Yea, I had the crap hit the fan the other day. I HAD a release day unit until GRAW came along. We put the game in and played it for a couple days ( not straight). We went to play it again the 3rd day and it froze on the UBI screen. We could get it to work every now and then. It would play demos but not disc after a while. Then it just stopped coming on. So M$ has it now and I am hoping to get it back this week. I knew it would happen so I got the extended warranty. I would tell any one who gets a new console that is less then a year old to get the 2 year warranty. The original XBOX and PS2 had similar issues. Nintendo seems to be the one with a better track record. Anyway, check here and read about more instances of issues.

You actually have to pay for 2 year warranty? how much? It's standard here in the Netherlands.
Curry
April 9th, 2006, 01:35
It's standard here in the Netherlands.
Actually that's quite recent legislation. 5 years ago or so only 1 yr was standard on anything and you were screwed if it died one year after. New legislation defines that you are entitled to expect a "reasonable lifetime" from any purchase. A TV dying after 2.5 years is also covered by that, so if they just up the official warranty time from 1 to 3 it makes no difference except in the legal costs.

That's true, but convincing a company to fix your broken television after 2 years can be quite a pain. Let's just say you've got 2 years of 'easy warranty' :P

I have an interesting theory regarding this entire launch issue with this xbox, but I will leave that for a seperate post if I get enough inquiry as to what it is so we can possibly discuss it.
I'm a new member to Xboxic and the reason I joined is because I wanted to see how many people were actually having these problems that I just encountered recently.
I've had mine since January 18th and it froze about 4 times through the two month period up until two days ago April 18th. On that day, it started completely freezing during initial loading screens, during MLB 2k6 first inning play, and during tomb raider play. I have it laid horizontal on glass in a well ventilated area, so I don't think its an issue whether you lay it horizontal or vertical from what I gather from others. I kinda felt the crashing coming and it finally happened. Called M$ 3 times with the first two times them trying to tell me that it was the games that I was playing and the third time I called which was 2 minutes later, I finally talked to someone that had their head on straight and told me they would send out a box for me to put the unit in. Now me, I need a work release, so I called around to see if there was any other way I could get a 360. Found one at a local family video that has a policy where they put an $360(no pun intended) authorization on your credit card but doesn't charge it, takes your driver license number, name, and phone number and rents the unit to you for either 1 day, which is 10 a night, or 5 days, which is only $20 dollars. I have 9 games for the 360 because I work for EA, so I couldnt deal with waiting on Microsoft to get mine back to me.
Still waiting on UPS to bring the box so I can drop the console only into the box. The guy from M$ I spoke to said to only drop the console and nothing else. He said it may take a few days to get the box here and after the xbox is in house, it normally takes 5 - 10 business days to get it back to the consumer. However, he said they have been putting them out faster lately, so im guessing 3-5 days it should be back after in their hands.
Like I said, I have a theory on all this ish, but I've had mine for 2 months, and haven't played it constantly, and it just quit now. So just because you havent had problems with your unit yet, doesn't mean you won't. I'll see when I get my unit back. Till then, I'm definitely not going to go without my xbox. Family Video saved me. Thank You.

I just read something that Microsoft will be putting different processors in their 360s early next year. They will be moving from 90 to 65 nm. This will reduce the processor's heat production.

So basically they are going to bandaid all the problems with the current 360's and when sony launches the ps3, thats when they will FIX the problem.

Yep... it's only a matter of time until your system totally locks up, and refuses to start. You will get the red flashing lights in sector 1,3,4 around the "ring of light" to indicate an internal hardware failure whenever you try to power it on. If you were getting frozen games with some veritcle lines (artifacting) on the screen, with a slight screen wiggle, you're definitely a victim of an overheating GPU... There's really not much you can do for it. I tried cracking my xbox open (without rmoving the MICROSOFT sticker on the front of the chassis- didnt wanna void my warranty) then i placed a large fan behind it, but it didnt stay on for more than 20 minutes before totally crashing. My xbox was a DAY 1 launch unit, and worked flawlessly for 5 months (except for a corrupt HD). At least MS was willing to take it back even though I was well past the 90 day manufacturer warranty period. Now I'm just waiting.... waiting....... waiting.... they anticipate 9-14 days to get your console back from the time you file your claim.... You'd think they could at least do 2nd day shipping :-(

Even though I'm going to end up with a refurb unit... I'm going to get the NYKO INTERCOOLER add-on... that motherfucker does get hot, no doubt about it, and if you plan to keep your 360 in a confined space, plan on having overheating issues... The INTERCOOLER got some gret user reviews, and you can find it for under $20...
Once MS starts using the smaller CPU's in the 360s (sometime in 2007 probably) I'm going to use my BestBuy replacement plan to get myself a *NEW AND IMPROVED XBOX 360*!!!!!! 8)

The only problems I've had with my 360 is after a 4-6 hour session of Oblivion sometimes it will freeze during one of the load screens, but it seems to be okay if I turn it off and let it sit for a smoke break. *kick*
Mine started crapping out when playing the chromehounds demo yesterday,
The screen flashed black one or twice, then everything had a bluish or yellow shine to it. Depending on the orientation, horizontal things had a blue shine, and vertical things a yellow one. The shine only appeared along the edges of stuff. Smoke particulary was a weird thing to see.
I hoped it would be just once, because it stopped doing it when I went to play the prey demo, but today it started doing it during an online game of GRAW, after about an hour of gaming.
So i called MS and UPS should pick it up soon.
And I've only had it for like 2-3 months. :/

Sucks :/ I really have no idea how many consoles are crapping out eventually but I do suspect MS isn't liking it either.

Well mine stopped working after my girlfriend dropped it in it's special suitcase on one holiday on the street with those nice hard streetstones and my father managed in the holiday after the first drop to pull the electricity off while I was playing it.
I got a 3 red lights now and then. Not always. Had a Toshiba/Samsung dvd and would like one back instead of Hitachi, those are planes taking off in noise. SO I wrote a German letter and told the servicedesk on phone that I would only accept a T/S drive back. Otherwise I would just call and say it's broken again just as long till I would get a T/S drive back or they would loose a customer and I would sell the thing.
Luckely they gave me one with a T/S drive back. Even better: This T/S drive and console manufactured at the end of March is more quiet then the one that I had before, which was manufactured at the end of december 2005. It's strange. It's REAL quiet. It runs fine now, no freezes no nothing. Maybe they even tweaked the drive to get it extra quiet, could that be?

funny actually I been thinking the 360 was overheating especially playing oblivion, so I rigged up 2 x 120mm varible speed fans (thermaltake) and sat my 360 on those, since I live on a main road, the fans making a little noise isnt audible over the traffic so its great. Guess what, even in the heat wave that Britain is suffering, the game hasnt crashed once!!, I also think the gpu is the offending piece of kit causing it to crash, cos sometimes you can hit the guide button when i think its crashed (you hear the noise but not actually see it appear, so think the gpu locks up) and thats about the last thing you get.
Wanna make a proper stand for the 360 incorporating the fans but I am still looking for the right box. I am also waiting for the warranty to expire and I'll have the lid off and maybe incorporate some fans into the unit.

hey guys im new here i just started having the 3 red lights problem today and tried everything i could do to try and fix it and nothing worked so i have to give it back to best buy tomorrow and they will replace it with a new one because i have the 2 year replacement plan and to let you know my console was manufacutred 11-29-2005 and bought december 18 2005 and i only had the ocnsole for 6 months and it broke, so my question is that im going to have to give them everything that came with my premium xbox360 but will i have to give them my free remote that came with it and now it does not come with it, and also since im giving them my hard drive to with my xbox live account still on it would them or the people they give it back to for them to return it would they take my hard drive and look at the credit card info on it or do you think they could also take it and use my account and erase all my friends or do you just think that they will erase all the things off my hard drive to use for another console like refurbished and erase all the contents off of it including my xbox live account because im worried that this could happen to me and my account would be ruined.

You dont have to give them everything, just tell them that the hard drive contains personal/private data. Take only the 360 with you, and let them open the new box, then you just swap out only the unit, they now have your broken xbox, and a new hard drive and everything. And you get to keep your remote and hard drive, that's how I always do stuff.
Edit:
If the account is transferred to another unit, you'll need to sign in again with your password, so your account is pretty safe, I would not count on it tho.

I've never had console issues with Microsoft. Sony... well... don't get me started. But by any chance, Homer, is your Son's 360 vertical (standing up) or horizontal (lying down). Mine is horizontal and I have no problems. However, one of my friends does, and his is vertical.
I would say, start a poll then, who's vertical and who's horizontal running with or without problems.
Just for the record, mine is standing vertical and no problems here.
Furthermore, which is interesting: I had an T/S drive from the end of 2005 which already made less noise then my friends Hitachi 360. But due to my girfriend who dropped the 360 on a trip on the street (in a suitcase it was) and my father that pull the electricity when I was gaming, had to return it due to 3 red lights flashing...
So I asked them to replace it by a model also with T/S drive. Which I got. It's a model of end March 2006. The strange thing is: this one is even more quiet! It's whispering really. More quiet then my original XBOX and any console I've seen running up to date. Are they tweaking the drive's sound already by the complaints of a noisy drive maybe?
Anyhow. That poll. Would be nice I think. Horizontal is a bit dull to me that's my old xbox, this one needs to be vertical with the HDD on top! :)

Yep I also only gave the console with the adapter, without the HDD. Although the Service desk employee told me that if the problem would exist after replacing the console, I had to pay to send the HDD only to them.
She said that accesoires aren't under the waranty? That sounded strange to me and I said she should look up the Dutch law as all I bought has to work. Don't know if any of you ever heard this? It sounded strange to me though.
I am glad I didn't send my HDD with it. With all the downloads, gamesaves etc. I think even the most E3 gamevideo's can't be downloaded anymore and I like them :)

Yes... I tried reconnecting the cable. And I also made sure the input ports on the tv worked. At first I could switch the input to TV on the xbox cable and then plug the xbox into the AV ports and get some distorted output, but after a few reboots I lost all video output and eventually also lost the sound and now it just powers on (with no red lights).

Got a tracking number from UPS... and apparantly the package arived to the Jackson MS office empty. Hummm.... makes me nervous to ship my xbox now. Called back xbox and all the sudden my xbox is now still under warranty till 9/29 (weird). So they are sending me another cable, and now I have a free repair. I also asked about extending the warranty and it seems you can extend the warranty for a full year for $30 as long as the warranty hasn't already expired. Not sure if any of you knew about that... but it might be worth it!!!!

Yeah well bleedin' edge technlogy always has problems, especially if you need to manufacture it as cheap as possible. But I do tend to think the first batch of 360s had some very structural problems that took them a while to iron out, and I am really curious what percentage of 2005-built 360s eventually died.
And welcome to the forum jayc :)

I know this was posted in another thread, but read (http://www.nextechnews.com/PermaLink,guid,fea3f997-d078-4e56-945e-dded69598dae.aspx) it.
...Also another sad fact is Microsoft has a 2-3% failure rate on a proven silicone chip that they are already on their second revision and people are acting like thats a "high failure" when in fact its quite low... but as i was saying if they think this is bad god only knows what sony will end up having with all the production problems and the shear complexity of the system.
I know that isn't a structural problem, but a system that fucks up is a system that fucks up.

Well if it was there'd be solid proof by now, especially considering all the rumors hinting in that direction I just know that lots of "independent research agencies" have conducted surveys to check it out, hoping to take a pot shot at MS for screwing up. Since nothing like that ever surfaced, I'm pretty confident that MS isn't lying about DOA rates being well within the 3~5% industry average. DOA is measured as "dies with 8 days of purchase" though usually, and I'm really curious as to how many people get problems eventually.

They are sending me a coffin this week for me to send my 360 back. They waived the fee for repairing it even though my warranty ran out June 1st.

I didn't even say anything. He brought up the $129 price, but immediately said he would look into getting the fee waived. He put me on hold for like 3 minutes, came back and said they would waive them.
The only thing I can think is that my 360 does still work. The DVD drive just makes this loud vibrating sound. Even when I'm just on the dashboard. Maybe they figure it won't be so difficult to replace the DVD drive.

That's true that people do tend to complain more than praise, but I see a lot of polls asking if people have had problems. It's not like 50% of the people have had problems, but it's more than 3%.
I also post in a pretty tight community forum on one site. There are about 60 of us there that have 360s. I know that's a small sample, but over 10 of us have had to send ours back.

Looks fine, what you need to worry about is where your power supply is and give that room to breathe.

My power supply is behind the amplifier(that thing on the left of the 360)

You should check it to see how hot it gets, cause if its getting to hot you may need to move it out so it can get more air.

ok, I checked with Llamma.com, and its seems I have the lights flashing that are 0110, and it says that means memory problem, now I had opened my 360 to put a new DVD drive cover and button on there to make it look like a premium, and now microsoft wont fix my 360 no matter how much I give them, does anyone please know of any companies that would please check it out, or any good lawyers that would take my case with microsoft, cause I understand that if I open it, that my warranty is gone, but I dont understand why they make a product that only they can fix, and they pretty much told me that I can throw my 360 in the trash >< it really pissed me off, Please HElP!!!

I am not that sure as Zerodisorder is. Especially at the bottom of the console, a lot of heat and air is produced. Furthermore, the HDD is headed towards one large magnetic field, the HiFI system right beside it. If you'd ask me, to be certain put it on top of that grey table thing. Why not? The 360 may be seen with it's design I say and it doesn't match with the HiFi ;) so you can just as easy put it with some distance off it. If I'd ask myself if my 360 would need ventilation, I'll just take the save way and put it in a position I would be SURE it was ventilated in the most optimal way.
So good position? Could be? Optimal position or sure it ventilates enough? Well not in my opinion. Furthermore, I think anyone should think of the Niko Aircooler or other extra airflowing add-ons. Every small decrease of heat makes the hardware live longer. And that for 20 Euro or so it's a good investment

Well, wrong actually it depends what's wrong with it. And there are other people that repair those things. They buy second hand 360's and take stuff out of it to repair yours. Well, I know a guy that repairs PSP's, XBOX, PS2, mobile phones and 360's as far as my knowledge goes. If you're interested I could ask him. But he lives in Europe, so it just depends where you are living (if it's The Netherlands/Belgium it could be a solution). And well a product that only they can fix... There are more companies like that. That's just what you get with special designed hardware not sold on normal markets. Could be with anything. I mean certain parts of cars are also manufactured by one company, and there are more examples. I don't want to be like I am allknowing, but before opening a 400 dollar/euro machine, I would try to find out if I'd be screwed if I would do it or not. Nice talking afterwards, I know but maybe information for others then...
I'll ask my contact about that problem and if he repaired a thing like that before and post it overhere

Thanks! But has the magnetic field of the HIFI system impact on the HDD?

Well as far as I know, that data fixed like on ROM's is unchangable in it's form. But anything else can be influenced by -strong- magnetic fields. I can still think of the days of diskettes that should be put nearby a monitor or HiFi equipment because data could be lost/corrupted. I guess the same can happen with HDD. But I am not techniqal enough to give a 100% certain answer, maybe someone else can! The HiFi equipment will produce heat also, I would put all stuff just a bit further away from each other to be certain to eliminate all possible negative side effects of heat and magnetic fields!

If it was near a subwoofer i'd be worried about the hard drive, but not near a stereo system. imo , you may be right though.

Personally I've now had 2 360s die on me and I've kept them in a very well ventilated area. It seems to me that eventually at some point regardless of where it's placed it's gonna fail. I'm just happy I actually bought an extended warranty for once.

I have a question for ya Jayc, When you bought your warranty did they send you anything back and let you know it was purchased? Cause I bought one a while back and they charged me for it, but I never got anything back letting me know i had it, I just know they charged me. And I'd hate for my 360 to die, and it turn out that they kinda screwed me over.

And my 360 is dead AGAIN!
Three 360's crashed in 2 months!
I placed them al on a table with enough space to ventilate.
First one: drive was dead.
Second one: crashed while playing, white spots and bars in the screen.
Third one: system error and one red light flashing.

They sent me a service contract with the console's serial number and warranty expiration date. The only problem is that if your console breaks after you receive a replacement you've got to send a letter to MS to tell them about the serial number of your new console. I sent mine months ago and when my 360 recently died they claimed to not have my new serial so it was a bit of a hassle talking to the CSR.

Well I think my 360's disc drive now died. I was watching a movie last night jsut fine, and shut it off and went ot sleep. Turned it on this morning and it didn't read the movie. So I tryed another movie, it didn't read that. So I tryed a game, and it didn't read that either. And Microsoft never sent me the confirmation of my purchase of the warranty, even though they billed me for it. So I have no idea what to do :?

I was having problems with my xbox 360 too. It was giving me the red lights as well (freezing after a bit of play)....but I fixed myself by using the hot air gun method. If you go to xbox-scene.com and look in the hardware section it will give you a video to watch to perform the fix. I would only advise this as a last option I bought my 360 in nov when it fist came out, so my warranty was up and microsoft wanted me to pay 120 bucks to fix it....many people have tried this fix and repaired their xbox too....
