Nah!! I was using a 19inch LCD monitor before I ordered the plasma, the only problem I have is that after the 50inch one, the 19inch looks way too small which is why I moved the 50inch downstairs and got a 32inch for upstairs.
The only real difference between monitors and HD TV's is the HDTV's produce more colour, the monitor produces 16million to the TV's 16 billion - but you're still getting HD quality images on the monitor

Yeah, I know it's still HD but it's the size that annoys me lol. I guess I'll just have to wait for another 3 years before I'll be able to afford one of those behemoths 8)7

Yep, it is an HD projector.
While the images do show how good it looks, what you do not see is how good it sounds. I have a THX certified 7.1 surround sound setup, that delivers sound from 9 different speakers (the games are 5.1, but the amplifier will output 7.1...kind of like upscalling).

Crackdown: Each to their own i suppose, the others, i agree, saits row was fun, but not what i expected and such, Call of Juarez...Got i hated that, but Stranglehold is really good IMO, you'll see for yourself on the demo, the more you play the more you unlock, nice for a demo, but its at least worth a rent, even if just for multiplayer and achievements

As far as i'm aware, the only connection is PoP was the first game (as far as i know) to include any elements of parkour (free running, i used to do a bit back in the day, much fun) which Assassins Creed has a lot of. Climbing and jumping around on things and such, one of the main reasons i want it is for the parkour elements, just to be able to run around on buildings, good looking climbing over the crackdown "jump 100 ft then grab a ledge" climbing, i want something much more realistic, which is what AC delivers. That game is gonna own on disgusting levels IMO.

I can tell you, I spent about $4000 so far, that is for 96 retail games, 47 XBLA games, 4 Xbox 360 (one I gave to a friend), 8 wireless controllers (soon to be 9, the wife wants the pink one), the HD DVD drive, wireless wheel, MS quick cahrge kit with 6 battery packs and al kinds of trinkets. While $4000 may sound like a lot, this is about the same amount of money I would have spent on my gaming computer, without all the games.

Blimey!!! $4000.00 is not a lot to me, but a lot on the one hobby!! It's about £1800.00 (ish) which since the 360 launched 18 months ago - its your $222 a month investment in your personal entertainment...lol

I will be using this as my main console, and since it came with a 20GB drive, I exchanged the hard drive enclosures to include the 120GB drive in the Halo HDD case. So I have the whole Halo 3 console look, but with 120GB drive.

8) I was just looking at the Halo 3 wireless headset. If only I did not already have a WHITE wireless headset. To tell the truth, I can deal with the white headset, but what I would really want is a black chatpad. The white chatpad only really looks good on the white controller. While the black one whould look good on the two special controller and the green controller as they all sport black analog sticks and D-pads.
ps/ the green controller has a black battery pack included, and the two Tod McFarlane controllers also use black battery packs.

Yes, there will be a blue wireless controller and blue battery packs, but I am certain that the Todd McFarlane Halo 3 special edition wireless controllers have black battery packs.
To change the topic from colour here for a moment. I was reading up on the Halo 3 console and came accross a nice tidbit of info

But I could not find any place with actuals pics (most sites are blocked from work).

Too bad. Not that it makes any difference as the extra heatsink has pretty much resolved any RRoD in new consoles (no problem with my Elite since day 1). I know the DVD drive appears different than in my other consoles. Using a visual chart on another website, I realise that this unit contains the BENQ VAD6038 DVD drive.

The 50inch was £2000 last year and now it's in another room with the PS3 on the stand that it came with, one of those glass metal type ones.
The 32inch was £500 but I think you can get a 32inch cheaper again than that now. The price of these things come down all the time!

ya i think they're sonic x. a friend of mine picked 'em up from his work for me (he filled one of those claw machines that grab a toy w/ them.).
i got the polka faceplate, but i dont like faceplates. i like a clean / professional looking AV setup, not some artsy graphics on one of my 5 components on the rack.
The Polka faceplate is currently standing up on my desk at work, next to my 20th anniversery Sonic figurine and a mech from Lost Planet. and a little monkey from Super Monkey Ball. I love preorder swag :).

Although I do like Mario games it all started with Sonic on a master system when i was 8 or 9. So ever since I just played more and more Sonic games until I realised that I truly liked these games the most. ;)
Saying that not much can take me away from Sonic Rush Adventure since I got it last week.

Guys, what's the best sound system I can get for under $100 for my computer? I know that's pretty cheap, but it's all I have right now.

It's almost 2 years since the topic starter posted his/our setup. But in 2 years things change. So did my setup. This are the Specs:
* Television: Samsung LE40A656 FullHD 100hz :)
* Ps3 - Connected with HDMI
* Xbox 360 - Connected with HDMI
* HDX1000 - For all my HD series and MKV watching pleasure
* Xbox - Why it's there? dunno, for some old XBMC maybe
* UPC - HD DVR - Digital television
And there are some things hidden in the picture. Behind the games there is a linksys wireless router for connecting everything to my home network (i hate wireless). And there is also a 1 TB WD Nas behind the games for storing all the TV Series and Movies. I'm still working on a descent sound system.

used my 50$ best buy gift cert from christmas to pick up an Energizer PS3 controller charging stand. Too bad my 360 controllers dont have a stand and they have to sit unorderly on this cabinet in front of the nice controller stands.
i also picked up a chatpad for my 360 with the remaining gift card balance. What a complete waste. I don't see myself playing normal games with the pad attached, and it's a pain in the ass to snap on each time i need it. my best option at this point is to leave it on a second controller, and when i want to use it I'll switch the battery from controller 1 onto controller 2. Still, an unnecessary investment.
As far as HDMI cords... I'm 85% sure I'm right...
a 5$ cord is going to give you the same quality signal, a digital signal, as a 200$ cord from Monster cables.
Analog cords ... you pay for the shielding in the cord because signal can be affected from outside sources. Digital signals can't. You either have a digital connection or you don't.
I'd suggest getting your cables at www.newegg.com, and NEVER from a retail store like Best Buy or Circuit City.

Awesome speakers. I have these. They've broken twice (fuse has blown) which apparently is a known issue, but Logitech have been awesome to me and sent me free of charge new fuses. The first time I sent off my kit to them as requested, and when they returned it they forgot the remote. Logitech sent me another one free of charge which was awesome.
Despite the few issues, I can't complain at all. And I doubt I'd notice the difference between HDMI and optical sound either.

Yes, they certainly are awesome.
as for price, these have been at/around $499 for at least two years. I got mine when they were on sale for a 'mere' $299. I figured at the time that a new version must be around the corner, as why else would they drop the price so much? But low and behold, a year+ after I bought them, they are still close to $500 here.
2009 will be all about the Giant TV for me. Starting to save a bit at a time now, so when boxing day sales roll around this time next year, I'll be ready to purchase. No doubt, I'll be able to pick up a 50 INCHES plus, at less than $1000 by then.

There's a holiday to celebrate putting things in boxes?
I guess it's like Secretary day.
I don't think i've seen any wall mounted TV's in this thread?
does everyone play w/ their lcd at eye level?
I have a tv stand that's 3 glass shelves, and a sturdy pole running up the back to which I can mount my tv. I currently have the TV on its stand, sitting on the top shelf, and it is at perfect eye level from my couch. If i put my feet on my ottoman, my feet end up just below the tv picture. So... perfect height?
I don't know why, but I've been toying w/ the idea of mounting the TV on the pole. It would move it up at least a foot, so it would be elevated from my line of sight. Anyone have experience w/ this? Better? Worse? (Also, my 42" tv does not have mount screws w/ it, and the TV stand came w/ all pieces except the 4 screws to connect hte stand to the TV. I cannot find for the life of me (and I'm a master of the internet) what the screw size is for VESA compliant wall mounts on a 42" tv. anyone?)

Well I tried mounting my 42" on the tv stand's mounting pole... and instantly hated it.
Gave it an hour or so of tv to see if it would take getting used to... hated it. There was just something about the height... having to glance up, the space between the stand and TV was larger than the space between each shelf on the stand, it didn't look right.
So I took it down (took like 4 hours total to put up / reverse), and then went crazy on my cables. I still have more to do. It was suprisingly entertaining.
I will add a reccomendation though. I've used zip ties in the past, or just little bread bag ties... but this time around, while buying adhesive velcro to stick my Monster plug to the back of my tv stand, i bought little velcro zip tie things, and they are incredible. like $4.50 for a roll of 28 of them. theyre reusable, and never have little 'hanging chads' hanging off the zip tie after you tighten it.
I will post pics when it is award ready.

I know my ex just bought a tv from the same maker for $800, 1080p.
Initially it looks daunting, but I know for a fact that tv's still exist that are brand new that cost $1800, $2500, etc. I haven't compared in depth, because I'm not currently shopping, but I'd guess off the top of my head there are notable differences between the $800 HD tv's and the $2000 ones.
edit: my Ambilight alone is worth a couple hundred bucks. Two situations i envision:
1. person A has owned an ambilight before and is evaluating new tvs, the one with ambilight is 200$ more. he'd buy it.
2. person B has never owned an ambilight and is evaluating new tvs, the one with ambilight is 200$ more. he wouldn't.
(i'm person A and B in the examples. Having owned one before, I'd now say it was worth the money to have bought it. I've definitely loved having the feature the past year and a half. If i'd never owned it though, I'd say fuck that nonsense.)

Here's what it looked like a while back, on a different wall. When I moved the stand, I took the tv off, and moved it w/ all the wires still ran. So the wiring is pretty accurate:

and lastly, playing around w/ the panorama function on my new digital camera... pretty accurate how it matches up the two pictures i took on its own:

for my cable ties, i went to an arts and crafts store, Michaels is what it's called here, and the Velcro brand ties were $3.99 for a pack of 25. best pickup ever. i bet if those were at bestbuy next to speakers theyd be 9.99 easily.

Thanks.
I had Cowboy Bebop going on my laptop for the majority of my work hours, which I admit were longer than they should and could have been. I don't consider it a waste though. I was entertained doing it, and the time I spent on this I would have otherwise spent... being one level farther in Fallout 3.
If a girl ever comments on it after I bring her back to my place, I'll marry her on the spot. But although it looks incredible when viewing the before / after pics, I don't think it's something someones going to walk into my apt. and notice / comment on.
Oh well. It was good times.

I need a new entertainment center. Nothing big. Some to get my ass in gear and clean up my mess. Aug, you have inspired me. Now I just need to afford a decent tv stand/entertainment center. Any ideas?

mine was like $240 at walmart.
I knew that no matter what, I would need adequate space for my ps3/ wii / 360 / cable box / amp. i started looking initially at small stands w/ an audio rack next to them, but I found this sweet one made for a slightly bigger TV which accomodated it all.
I think 'Bush' makes a few different ones just like mine (WalMart definitely sells them). For a while now I thought mine was Bush, but apparently its not its some off brand. Some of the Bush ones are clear glass, some tempered, some with a metal frame, some have wood trim, they make like 7 different stands like this.

Sure! Just for getting my name correct. Now I will have to charge you for shipping, so it may be cheaper for you to just go and rent them at your local video store. :D

Haha, what did you call him? Thy-Ron sounds like a great workout machine or a robot fitness coach (Thigh-Ron 2000).
I like some of the Z-Line Stands but think they are a little overpriced.

I was thinking about this recently (because I'm considering getting my puzzles professionally framed for my walls), and started comparing my home investments to a video game.
My frames now... 20$, made for posters, and i cut them to a correct size on my own.
Professionally framed... 100$. will be wooden not plastic, glass not bendable plexiglass...
How many times in a video game do I skip the cheap chinsy 'for this level' purchase, save up, and buy quality? A lot.
I'm 27.
$100 sounds like a lot, for a frame, but when it's an object (like my 250$ tv stand) that at this point, I'm going to own for the rest of my adult life... it seems better to just spend the 100 instead of 20 and not end up w/ shit on my walls representing me.
Why not invest in quality. This ain't college anymore, I ain't got roommates spilling beers, why wouldn't I want higher quality goods?
edit: hilarious about thryon. True story: i had to copy and paste his name from his post into mine to ensure i spelled it right. I think i've read it as thyron forever now...

Considering the Title of this Thread has the word [bragging] in it, I think that's kind of the point. You have to spend to get good stuff =]
(the stand I like is the z-line phantom 50, $400 canadian. Might go on sale though, but I'm quite attached to the one I'm using now because I helped build it.)
p.s. - Puzzles?
p.p.s - to help you remember, a nursery rhyme: Thryon, Thryon, rhymes with Ryan, but real name, seems to be Brian, what a shame.

I was thinking it was 'the ryon'
what a shame.
Puzzles... I have...
3x Beatles Anthology, (in my tv pics)
1x Yellow Submarine montage, about 27" by 22" or somethin poster sized. (unglued/unframed)
1x Pink Floyd screaming face 'the wall', about 27"x22" (unglued/unframed)
1x Pink Floyd giant chair in a field, 27x22 (unglued/unframed)
1x Pink Floyd painted ladies, about 20x15, unframed, but glued.
1x Phish 'Rift' album cover art, slightly bigger than painted ladies. unframed, but glued.
4x small 12"x12" beatles puzzles of album covers or some yellow submarine stuff. glued and framed.
I also have from college...
2x Simpsons panoramic puzzles, glued,
1x Homer Simpson photomosaic puzzle, 1000pcs, 27"x22" ish, and the most insanely difficult puzzle i've ever done. photomosaic! glued and framed. its a big frame so i use it as my backboard for building new puzzles.
But i don't dig the simpsons anymore, worst of all the prime time cartoons. It's hard to find puzzles that represent my interests.
Oh and i built a Doctor Who puzzle of the Tardis flying in front of hte earth... but even though I'm a pretty huge geek, I try and maintain an image ... Doctor Who on my wall doesn't fit into that.
It's hard to find shit to put on my walls that are both classy, and represents me. But i think I've fared well with my puzzle collection.
(for the record, there's puzzle glue. you just dump it on the front of the finished puzzle, onto the picture, and paint it on w/ a foam brush. let dry, presto. )
edit: i know theres some AC/DC puzzles, some Jimi Hendrix ones, some Rush ones, and a few Rolling Stones ones... and even though I enjoy all of those bands, I don't really like... own any albums or LOVE those bands, so I don't think I could put them on my wall. The Hendrix one in front of a US flag looks badass though.

Ahh, yeah I remember my mom used to hang up her puzzles with that glue. I'm working on a puzzle of Canada at the moment. My girlfriend bought it, along with a puzzle of a Van Gogh Print for the mother, 1000 pieces. I called her a bitch, but she was "puzzled" why.... (sorry for the pun).
http://www.biografiasyvidas.com/biografia/v/fotos/van_gogh_3.jpg
That's going to be hard as hell!
I like to hang random prints on my walls and pretend they really interest me. But my walls are all still too naked.

I've read about that, looks pretty cool if you watch a lot of movies, but it sucks for gaming since it's not supported by Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii :P

It said it would upscale live tv feeds and also game consoles from 16:9 to its actual 21:9 ratio! I do watch a lot of films tho! It would be in my living room and not attached to my 360! So currently not an issue!

"its actual 21:9 ratio" ??
It would stretch the image and make it fugly if you ask me. The content of the game is rendered at 16:9 so there is no getting around that, Only PC games that supported crazy resolutions would look right.
Personally I don't mind horizontal black bars. while watching movies... can't stand the vertical ones on the side though :)
It's a silly idea for a tv if you ask me. If you care that much about movies by a nice projector that supports 2.3:1 which have been available for decades now.

January 19th, 2009, 17:53
Well I will wait to see actual screen shots of consoles and tv footage on it! I won't be able to afford one but it would be nice to see these aspects becoming the norm but we will see!
the ratio of the tv is 21:9 not the ratio of the game sorry just realized what u meant!
kidkit
January 19th, 2009, 18:45
you want that resolution to be come the norm? why!
Think of your vision, where does your peripheral vision start to weaken? try an imagaginary rectangle while staring straight ahead while you can still sort of make out your finger. You should draw something similar to a 16:9 ratio rectangle, if not even more square then that (IMAX films are more like 16:11).
I'd have to say that I have the opposite opinion, I'd rather have more movies make the jump to 16:9 :)

This sorta sucks. But has its obvious wins...
On Sunday, I heard a click inside my stereo receiver and then the center channel no longer worked during 5.1. I didn't really notice it at first, watching discovery HD... only the narrator cut out. I tested my components, it wasnt the cable box / ps3, wasnt my wires, wasnt the speaker... it was the receiver.
On Monday it was working again.
I'd rather be safe than sorry, and I'd owned that receiver since 2001, so I researched a bit and picked up a new Sony, STR-DG720. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_158STDG720/Sony-STR-DG720.html?tp=179
I had an extra surround sound thing w/ a receiver that doesnt fit my living room's needs sitting in a closet... so i scavenged some speakers from it, and now have a 7 speaker setup (still no .1 sub due to being in an apt) in my living room w/ the new receiver.
Results:
* Dolby TrueHD is to audio quality what HD is to video quality. I read a little on it, and I think it's even better than the uncompressed PCM track. (PCM goes at 16/48 something or other, and TrueHD goes at the master track's 24/48 ). I'll have to play w/ it more tonight, I mainly listened to PCM so far until about an hour ago I read the 16-24 thing. PCM blew Dolby Digital away. The sound is more... intense, vivid?
* Dolby Digital sounds horrible now.
* all that work I did on my wiring was undone as I rerouted my cable and ps3's HDMI's through my new reciever and redid the wires for my satellite speakers. :(

Well least the pay off is worth it! And I find tidying wires quite therapeutic (I might be weird tho) So give you something to do at the weekend!!!
I had to mess around with my audio last night but it is working beautifully now only a basic 5.1 system but in my bedroom sounds pretty good!

problems?
my friend and I were both concerned about there being a video delay after routing HDMI through my receiver... with blu ray and cable i've noticed no problem whatosever, the voices sync to mouths perfectly... haven't tried any timing based games on the PS3 yet though.
