View Full Version : Did the update brick your console?

One of the common threads that appeared after the fall update was how it was causing many people's consoles to "brick" and start to get the dreaded 3 flashing red lights.

Since I have now experienced this firsthand as three days after the spring update my console is now bricked and about to be sent back to MS, I was wondering if anyone else has had any problems with the Spring update seeming to cause their consoles to fail?

So far mines all good, but its a refurb that has been home just over a month, so if it did fuck up that quickly i think i would have thrown it out my window before contacting M$

My guess is that of your console dies after a dashboard update, it was doomed to die soon anyway.

My console was back on time with the release of the update...it couldn't have been timed better...

I did get 4 red flashing lights which I nearly collapsed, but I had forgotten to plug the VGA cable into the console before switching it on...and thats all that causes that issue...I had to plug the scart cable in to reset the Pal-60 settings, then take it out again to plug the VGA cable in - except I forgot cos I was so pleased it was back

Doesn't the red ring of death (3 light) always mean a hardware malfunction?

So in theory, no software update should ever cause a red ring of death.

Pedle didn't say there was a red ring, but like Rafe said....It was probably just coincidence and was going to happen anyway.

Yeah 3 Red Lights is ONLY hardware. 1 Red Light is very minor problems like software & game updates and loose connections.

Just dont sign into messenger is my main tip. The service is horrible atm.

Plus if your consoles is before the June '06 build you have more chances of bricking. I got my latest console in August '06 and its fine. If it does mess up, i have no warrenty though as I bought my console on JANUARY 5th! SO I DONT GET A EXTENDED WARRENTY >_< Fucking M$

hey im new here but i sighned up cause i thought id let u guys know.
After the update, my xbox was also screwed up. Having no warranty left i was pretty mad. when i saw a bunch of things online about it, i decided to try and fix it.
If you have three red lights try this it worked for me.
Turn the xbox on and leave it like that for about ten minutes with the red lights flashing
After that, turn it off for five minutes or until it cools. then turn it back on and see if it works. if this helps please let me know

I wont even get started on that...

My console has not long been back from repair after paying for it because I was only just out of warranty. Basically if you have the red light even once it is only a matter of time before it fucks completely. It will only be motherboard or DVD drive, but before that final moment when it dies - the screen freezes and images go distorted with blue and white blocky squares - then it works no more...

If you have 3 red lights, theres no fixing it yourself, more like prolonging the inevitable.

I had the 3 red lights a few months ago, and my 360 still runs like new :).

Seems this update isn't causing any issues from what I've seen so far. Anyway, the Autumn update was the one that bricked my last 360. I still don't get how. I've seen people say things like "well your console was gonna go anyway, it just happened to go after the update". I don't quite buy that though, as my console was running just fine right up until the second the update had installed. Maybe that was a big coincidence? I'm just glad that I have so far had no more problems with the updates so far.

One thing's for sure. I don't believe there will be an xbox360 on the planet that will last for more than 4years without needing to be repaired.

MS are probably opening new repair warehouses and hiring new technicians as we speak in time for the big repair rush

Two things:

1. I'm glad your system crashed Nekro Neko. A troll like you doesn't deserve to play it anyways. Sucka!

2. If mine lasts 4 years I'll be happy as shit (and we all know how happy shit is, right?). Thus far, my launch console runs perfectly. I tend to have good luck with electronics. Also, I'm very anal about my toys and treat them VERY well. Lots of ventilation, never leave it on overnight etc.....Plus, after 4 years I'll be waiting for the 720 to be released :P
