I couldn't justify the cost of crackdown to get the Halo 3 beta. 3 weeks is a pretty long time but I'd rather just wait, and check out all of the great footage that will pop up.

I'm really not sure what people were expecting graphically. from this game, but do remember single player should have more detail.

You guys have no idea what a BETA test is obviously, its Halo 3, Just a small amount, its say, a live demo, but before completion of the game so the dev team dont have to pay for testers, or do it as much themselves, they select people (in this case anyone who got crackdown) and these people get to test the game, most people will post their opinons and suchlike on Bungie's site, and from that they may make some changes to the game bases on the feedback, so yeah, its a BETA test. its not another game.

I know they've said split screen will be good to go, but only for max of 2 people (for the beat at least).

As for the graphics, well, they look very slick indeed (from the HD videos at least). I don't think too many people will be unhappy, but then again, this is Halo, so for every one person that loves it there are 5 people that hate it (these are the same people that don't like certain bands because they are popular, you know the type, "I hate it 'cause everyone else like it so I'm too cool" type of dork that cuts themselves while crying.)

In short, I've dusted off the ole copy of Halo2 and have been playing it for the last 2 weeks just getting ready for the beta. Can't wait, and I'll see you bums online real soon.

The servers won't crash Jay. This whole beta is more about stress testing the network than anything else. Bungie/M$ knows what this title means to their console's future and how big and rabid the following is. The 'beta' we will see will be a very polished beta versus some real betas.

Take it for what its worth, but we'll be seeing something that is pretty close to the final version, but lets not fool ourselves here. Bungie will no doubt hold back a few cool features for the full version. You know, leave us wanting more then delivering it in Nov.

Long story short, I can't wait to kick all your asses at Halo 3, starting this WEd.

The graphics are amazing. people have been judging them over crappy videos with shotty quality. ans yes it keeps to the halo art style. and over all most of the weapons are well balanced against each other. They do have the HDR lighting in the beta also, and it looks really nice as well.

The beta is really fun, and the play back feature doesn't have any controls to pause it or anything(which it will have in the full game) but it does let you upload 6 videos that people can see and watch when they look at your profile in the game. and each video only takes up about 5 to 10 mb.

Agree totally. Halo 1 was excellent, Halo 2 was piss. Boring storyline, slow, plodding gameplay, average graphics.

Halo 3 has the potential to be really good (hopefully it acheives this) but whatever happens one thing is for sure -

Taking it online is going to be fucking ruined by hordes of pre-pubescents screaming racist, homophobic, bigoted and immature comments and generally twatting the experience for everyone. And, no offence to any decent US gamers out there (of which there are many) most of them will be American.

Ok so Britney Spears is one of the best selling artists of our time, does that make her music good? Titanic is the best selling movie at the US box offices of all time, was that any good? Popularity != quality and Halo is another fine example.

Actually it's the complete reverse. Something that doesn't sell can't be overrated by definition, but the chances of something being overrated rise exponentially with sales as mindless cattle pick up on the hype generated by early adopters.

Spot on. Also it is clear that people get easily caught up in the steamroller of hype and marketing that surrounds these products. If people are told often enough that they need/want a product they start to believe it. Thats the way successful products are made, Halo is no exception and Microsoft know this. If it was a good enough game in its own right people would buy it anyway. It gets to a point where any negatives are ignored - for example Halo 2 is SO SLOW - does this not piss people off - or do they 'choose' to ignore it because all their friends are playing it?? Anyway I am not bashing Halo 3, I have clearly said that I WANT it to be good.....The point is, and it appears that others agree, is that Halo is overated for many gamers. What exactly sets it apart? One could argue that its merely Call of Duty in space......what differentiates this platform and why? I would genuinely be interested to know what makes it SO special.

The control are so tight it makes your mums pussy look like a bucket.
Graphics ARE amazing, when you consider it's nearly 3 year old game running on quite old hardware.
The multiplayer is un-rivaled, and the way multiplayer is handled (match-making) is still beyond ANYTHING out there at the minute, and Halo 3 looks to better that!
It has some of the best multiplayer levels (Coagulation, Zanzibar anyone?)

For me Halo is not a great game why? simple i come from PC fps games which are designed in a different way. Halo was designed with a joypad in mind so was very flat. When i played Halo 1 for the first time it was on PC and that flat level design really showed up. I like FPS games to have some verticality to them. I have never bothered with Halo 2 as i was so unimpressed with Halo 1. Although i will be playing the Beta of Halo 3 i am not massively excited about it, for me there is only one FPS worth playing this year and that is Crysis on the PC, which will probably make Halo 3 look like its running on ancient hardware, from the videos i have seen so far Crysis looks amazing and Halo 3 looks generic. Although i do hope Halo 3 proves me wrong and turns out to be ground breaking, i can't see it happening.

As far as i am concerned though Quake 1,2,3 and 4 are the best EVER fps's to grace the videogame world. END OF

There are tons of people that bought Crackdown and will be removing the shrinkwrap tonight. They paid $60 just to be in on a mere 3 week unpaid bug hunting session of a game that's still half a year from being truly finished.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Halo 3 will be a great game, and I'm probably going to enjoy it as much as anyone else here. Bungie has a great history, and 10 million Halo 2 gamers can't all be wrong. Despite the common opinion in this topic though, a game can be both overrated and great. If a game sells 2 million copies based on its gameplay and design merits, it's a great game. If it sells another 8 million based on its name and pre-release fame alone, it's also overrated.

For a great comparison read this bit on the Windows 95 launch 12 years ago:
Microsoft's $300 million advertising campaign featured stories of people waiting in line outside stores to get a copy, and there were tales of people without computers buying the software on hype alone, not even knowing what Windows was.
Windows 95 was a revolution in its time and surely a great product for what it was meant to do, but by no means good enough to warrant people buying it just because they felt obliged to through marketing, while not even having a computer. The epitome of an overrated product.

I'm sorry, but there is not an ounce of unwarrented hype here.

Among other things, the Halo franchise has always been the one to make headway into new territory for MS as a company. Like it or not, there are elements in Halo that have been 'recycled' from millions of other sources. Its just the way it is. How many different "Aliens are out to destroy earth" plots can we see before they all become similar to one another? Halo 1 was perhaps the most important launch title in gaming history, as this wasn't just the launch of a console, but the launch of an entirely new company in the gaming industry. It was quite literally a sink or swin moment for MS Games. The quality of the game lead it to multiple awards, and almost instantly solidified the original xbox as a real player on the gaming scene. Halo 2 was essentially the first to give us seemless multiplayer over a console. Have any of you tried to play SOCOM 2 back in the day? Same time frame as Halo 2. It was absolute shit. Pretty much any other game was garbage compared to the matchmaking system. The sad reality is that many are still shit when compared to Halo 2 matchmaking. And please, don't start bitching about multiplayer on the PC being waaaayyyy better. We are comparing apples to apples here and that wouldn't be a fair comparison.

Halo 3 will be 'forced' to be both what Halo 1 was and Halo 2 still is. That is 1 - Graphically impressive, at least comparable or better than anything else on the 360 right now. 2 - Elevate 'next-gen' matchmaking to what it can actually be. Lets cut the crap here guys, this title will be extremely solid. Give it a few more hours and try the beta. Just from what I've seen it looks to be a big step up from Halo 2 in terms of depth of field and graphical touches. The gameplay looks solid as well.

As for Halo 2 being slow, I certainly hope you guys were reffering to the campaign. Once you play a few rounds online you should change your tune.

And if some of you guys hate it because you're no good at it, I am always willing to teach, lol;)

There are tons of people that bought Crackdown and will be removing the shrinkwrap tonight. They paid $60 just to be in on a mere 3 week unpaid bug hunting session of a game that's still half a year from being truly finished.

A couple of items:

1. Crackdown is being 'liquidated' at EB Games for $49.99 CDn new, as they are not dumb and they know that in three weeks no one will want crackdown anymore. Get them out while they can.

2. Don't you guys traade in your games? I know for myself that after the three weeks is up, Crackdown will be going back to my local store and used a s credit towards another game (most likely Halo 3 to be honest).

I consider this to be a three week rental of a game.
Let just assume that I get back $20 for something I paid $50 for.
I would have actually paid $30 for this game for three weeks. At $10 per week, thats about even with what you'd pay for a 7 day rental at blockbuster (at least for a 360/PS3 game......bloody rip off artists is what it is).

Anyways, I see this as a rental, and I'm totally fine with it.

I used to keep all my games.
It was actually a hockey game that made me start trading them in.

I figured that I buy the new one each year, and the old ones just sit there. Then, for NHL 07 (not too good by the way, 2K hockey was better IMO) I grabbed my copies of '04 '05 and '06 and traded them in.

I got '07 for free plus some store credit towards a next game.
Considering that I was NEVER going to play the other again it was well worth it.

The only games I will not trade are Halo 1 and Halo 2.
oh, and those burger king games because they are totally worthless and make decent coasters for the coffe table. ;)

It will be 'the same' as both games feature Master Chief. It will be the same as both games feature the same (mostly) weapons. It will be the same in that you're fighting aliens called the Covenant.

The gameplay will be similar, but thats a good thing after selling 10 million copies of Halo 2. They must have done something right, right?

Anyways, that some see it as Halo 2.5 is laughable. You could say that for ANY SEQUEL. ever! period. Games, movies, 2nd albums for a band etc....

God of War 2 has it's own art-exhibit coming up (http://gallerynucleus.com/bandaid/content/files/1/gow_flyer_396.jpg) and is featured on the cover of EDGE's special on game-art, it's getting lots of praise from people who know way more about art than you and me. And Halo? Halo has a faceless dude in a generic green armor wielding generic scifi guns.

There's alot more that goes into a game beside just the art if that's your only argument you stupid reject. the story and the game play also help define the game and i've played god of war and halo and if you ask me halo has a way better story line the god of war does. PLUS i don't see a good fanciful multiplayer from the game either. oooo double burn!!

the unreal tournement games really didn't change that much over the years, but subtle changes in weapons and better map development really adds a lot to the experience. Running seems to be a little quicker based on the footage too which is great.

I know I will enjoy the game just because I enjoyed Halo 2 and i know (from the jump of Halo:CE to Halo2 at least) that bungie won't mess with the physics or gameplay. There will be some changes, but as you note for the Unreal series, they are usually subtle and tend to add to the game rather than draw from it. this won't be any different.

i think it will work.. if you have a copy of crackdown the the beta download (greyed out before tomorrow), i think it should be able to download and launch. I dont' think it registers to the console...

don't quote me on this, but renting is cheap so give it a shot.

You HAVE to have a copy to play it, you download it from the Crackdown interface, you access it through the Crackdown interface, there is NO way to get to the Halo BETA without Crackdown, so if you rent it, you can play it, but ONLY for the days you have the copy of Crackdown to hand

Too bad the Halo story is a generic sci-fi story, very much like the art. If you thought it was better than God of War's then I think you skipped a few cutscenes. WOW I completely agree. So much so that it forced me to create an account. The only effective use of cutscenes was on PSone. (FFVII + VIII)

Well, I got my Code at around 8:15, (in my fucking spam folder!) and I'm about 50% through, at 10:00am. this is taking forever to download. So even when it becomes available for Crackdown disks don't expect to be playing right away.

I wonder if there is a tile for the Beta to go on your "recently played" games vv or maybe if they give you a zero point achievement for participating in the Beta like the Zero point Zero-hour achiev.

No there is no tile, and no there is no achievement. And well my download was done in about 15 minutes been playing since 13:50. It's pretty cool.

It won't surprise me, if MS did this on purpose. To let all the people download the game with the code and with their rule-of-three first. So they know for sure the internets aren't gonna crash. So they can ensure everybody can download the game with a decent speed.

I agree, Crackdown is a great game in it's own right, and shouldn't have been bought just for the Halo 3 Beta.

yea serves me right for trusting a shitty corporation like microsoft , i was just thinking about this,halo 3 has been in the making for years now and surely they had the beta planned for ages aswell, and they knew after 2-3 years in development whether there would be problems with crackdown i think this is really bad planning and microsoft should be embarrassed.

Dunno if this has been mentioned already or not but apparently the complaint about the Crackdown Beta Download not working has been logged by Bungie to Microsoft.

Its in the hands of Live Staff and could take anywhere from 1 hour (not likly) to 24 hours (most likly) to fix.

Should also be noted that the live staff in the USA don't start work till 8am PST... which means they have only been at it for an hour...

So anyone with Crackdown... including myself... is in for a long wait.

Still I love Crackdown the game. I only need 7 Agility Orbs for the full 500. So I'll just look for them while I'm waiting.
