Yay, so the Heavenly sword demo is finally here (http://www.playstatic.com/). Have any of you guys played it already and what do you think about it?

Heavenly Sword is about a dramatic tale of revenge where protagonist Nariko, a fiery red-haired heroine embarks on a quest for vengeance against an invading King and his army. The story builds around the ancient Heavenly Sword which once belonged to a powerful deity. It can never be wielded by a mortal without it draining their life-force, killing them within hours.

It actually made me start looking into the dreaded PS3. xP
It really does look amazing.

Yea it really does! Too bad the demo is really really short, but it gives a pretty good impression of how the fighting works and that's probably what you'll be doing most anyway. I want this game!

Disappointing demo: nice graphics, inconsistent frame rate, boring gameplay.

From what I've seen of it, it's very repetitive.

That's bullshit, lots of games are linear and there's nothing wrong with them. Gears is linear as fuck, just like GRAW, Lost Planet, Condemned and there's plenty of other games.

I, myself, really don't like Linear gameplay but there have been really good games that are linear. Gears of War... sucks offline. =/ But who in hell bought that for the single player?

Directed gameplay, aka not a game.
And what the hell is everything else? Tell me do you indulge in a little First-Person Shooter? It's all linear and it's all directed and hence in your regards, no games are games ... unless they're completely online, where there are still objectives to meet.
Even Deus Ex, even as one of hte most open ended games is still directed and "not a game?"
I, myself, really don't like Linear gameplay but there have been really good games that are linear. Gears of War... sucks offline. =/ But who in hell bought that for the single player?
Gears of War was one of the best Single-Player games around as was The Darkness, whose multiplayer sucked.
Games are as much for the story and scripted scenes as they are for bragging rights online.
That's bullshit, lots of games are linear and there's nothing wrong with them. Gears is linear as fuck, just like GRAW, Lost Planet, Condemned and there's plenty of other games.
Rival, all games are directed to a degree. Even your RTS are directed, you've still got to meet the objective to win. If you're after a non-directed game, go join Second Life - even that's not a game though :|
I'll admit the Heavenly Sword demo was very, very short (pulling in at 3.30 - 4 for me) however I really enjoyed it. Felt to me like a mix of God of War and Devil May Cry.
I love the way the screen isn't too cluttered (except with enemies) and I found no problems with the frame rate at all, though I must be one of the few.
Highlights for me was the exceptional detail in the first introductory movie and the scripted sequences were nice and smooth. I'll admit the battles were a little repetitive but I found it was fun to mix it up and use all the different combos and stuff to make the game more interesting for myself.
Got a challenge for you, make it through the demo holding nothing but either R1 or L1 (power stance or ranged stance) cause this will also negate the auto-block (which I though was a nice feature).
Also, Triangle is your friend!

I love the demo. One of the few fighting games I actually like. Then again, for some odd reason I kinda seem to like Ninja Gaiden Sigma too ... I don't die all the time as soon as I enter the building which made me HATE the xbox version. Couldn't stand that one on xbox but the PS3 remake seems much more accessible (and easier for old ppl like myself).
And if you think combat in HS is repetitive ..... let me give you a small hint :) You have A LOT of options there to make your own "choreography" for every battle. That's the whole point of all those slomo moves, aerials and stuff. Fight so it looks awesome ... it's very satisfying to make a battle look good.

Too bad it isn't available for the X360. The game looks hot :) .
But if the gameplay is linear, boring and with a lot of framedrops I don't want it. I want a good hack n slash game with a decent story and nice graphics for the x360.

while playing warhawk (i rule at it.), i was having a discussion / argument with some xbox fanboi claiming that gears of war single player game was amazing, online sucked, and claiming that bioshock would probably get game of the year.
somehow heavenly sword comes up, and he starts bitching about how its overrated, that reports say you can beat the game in about 10 hours.
what? you can beat gears + bioshock in that time too.
fanbois! i tell ya.
as far as linear complaints...
not every game needs to be 'sandbox'.
not every game needs online play.
not every game needs real time action.
my 2 cents.

WRONG - Gears + Bioshock= 10 hours
RIGHT - Gears + Bioshock = 25 hours

You're right. Not every game needs to be as open ended as Oblivion. On the other hand, NO game needs to hold your hand all the way through.
Go here for this scripted event, now go here and watch this cutscene. Now press X LEFT O RIGHT RIGHT LEFT. Good boy!

linear gameplay =/= holding your hand.
Did you ever play Half Life? you have one way to go the entire game...
What, do you claim Gears isn't linear because at maybe 3 or 4 opportunities througout the game you have a choice of one of two linear paths to walk down?
Numerous games over the years i've quit halfway through because the story isn't gripping. If i walk a straight line for 25 hours hitting A the entire time, while getting incredibly engaging cutscenes telling a well crafted story, it's a great game.
WRONG - Gears + Bioshock= 10 hours
RIGHT - Gears + Bioshock = 25 hours
sorry, i used the '+' as 'and'. both games are around 10 hours.
hell, Dead Rising, which continues to be the 360's best title to date, takes around 6 straight hours to beat. (but i admit, has tremendous replay value).

All I know about this game is my friend has been doing the 3D Modelling/Texture mapping on this at Sony Cambridge
TBH there are lots of games that are "Linear" but are really really good storyline driven one game from the Last Gen which really stands out for me was Farenheit (Indigo Prophecy for u guys across the pond) and that was really linear one way to get in the base one way out but there were storyline choices like saving someone or running away but graphically it sucked and also Max Payne I and II are linear but they were brilliant games I'm still Holding out for Max Payne III

It's a fun ride and also a short ride. Difficulty is quite unbalanced too. There is no real progression in difficulty. It's mostly quite easy, even too easy. Except for the very last fight which - at least for me - was brutally hard. Took me 3 days to get it right.
Also there is very little ..... no actually ZERO incentive to play it again after beating it. You can improve your ratings somewhat but that seems almost impossible. At least I couldn't figure out how to really improve the ratings in most stages except for those I knew I messed up. But sometimes you end up with 1/3 even tho you seemed to play it "perfectly" with no idea what to improve.
No need to repeat all the good stuff, it's pretty damn awesome in every possible way except for the amount of content you get for your bucks.

hilarious spoiler:
at one point when trying to obtain a password, kai (a side character) points her bowgun at a prison guard's crotch and says "Hmm, maybe I'll hit your weak point... for massive damage!

Hahahah. Yeah, that section was absolutely hillarious. I really adored that game and Kai and Nariko are some of the best, sexiest and cutest female characters I've ever seen I think.

$7.99 to rent at blockbuster for 5 days + 7 day grace period on late items.
I love a game w/ as much cg as this one. Perhaps the 360 can handle graphics like that, but I really don't see too many games on the 360 have as much cg and high end graphics as this game puts out. It'd be nice to see more.
I've put in maybe 6-7 hours at this point and I'm at the start of Chapter 4. Seems about as long as Bioshock, but admittedly with less replay value, or gears of war, with no online.

no, i watch CG cutscenes that look 20x better than the ingame graphics looking cutscenes of Halo 3. cutscenes that tell a story and enhance the quality of the game.
and the same can be said about Mass Effect and a controller. Last time i checked it doesn't require a controller to read a choose your own adventure novel.
Chris

I didn't even bring up Mass Effect, you did.
..anyway. If you want to be fooled and tricked into playing something that looks nothing like your little movies you like to watch, then go for it.
