View Full Version : Vile Ad Links on News Pages

I know this site is using adverts to try and generate some cost's back in keeping the site running, but I have just seen my number 1 annoyance in online advertising where words used on site have links which opens up some crappy little box. More times than not when reading you can accidentally roll over them when reading something. Am I alone in really not liking this type of ad generating?
Will that type of ad word stuff come to the forums?
I have also seen other response from people on the comments pages and it's not liked that much. This was one of the few sites that didn't use them. It feels like the front page is now over run with adverts, but im not there all that much.
*begs PLEASE dont bring it to the forums...

just block anything from http://*.intellitxt.com in your restricted sites an dI no longer have them in my browser ....
IN IE7 go to "tools" => "Internet Options" =>"security (tab)" => "Restricted Sites (icon)"
Add the line http://*.intellitxt.com it should stop all those mouse bombs.

As long as these ads give the guys a few bucks extra a month I don't mind them being on the frontpage O-)
EDIT: @Cleansweep. Blocking ads is like stealing from the site in a weird kind of way. Curry will explain it shortly, I'm sure of that.. I remember his earlier rants about guys using ad blockers and stuff..

Yeah I remember that...lol, I haven't blocked them, I'll just ignore the front page.
I saw Curry's reply about overreacting to highlighted words after your post in the link you gave...:D
Nobody minds adverts, it's expected but ones that are associated with words I really hate. Them and Spam - i know its only a highlighted word, but when you read something and then suddenly up pops the box which then hides what your reading. You just want to close the whole page off...

Believe me, I am the last to block normal banner and button ads, as a matter of fact I have spent quite a bit of time troubleshooting issues on ads. This mouse bomb is a nasty bit that majes it a target for elimination in my book, if you want to put up with it then great, not good for me. I just couldn't put up with the text links any longer ...
So lets talk about paying for acceess to support a site. I had offered to pay for a personal view of the site site free of banner ads etc., in the past. Anyone want to open up that discussion?. :?

Other people on the front page are also suggesting blocking ads from here, so I don't think putting the underlined words up was a good thing ;)
Im not sure if anyone else has this problem, but when I type in the comments box on the front page it doesn't seem to recognise me typing anything. I have to press the letters a few times to get them to appear.
(No it's not my laptop keyboard)
It's ok typing in the forums and in everything else I do, but the comments box on the front page takes me a couple of go's to type in a word. If I write block fluently without looking it appears a 'blck' and I'd have to go back and press 'o' 3 times? Weird... maybe its IE7

Because they paid beyond crap. I ran it as an experiment at the time, and payout was abysmal, so I got rid of them: as you know and has been pointed out here I try to maintain a healthy relationship between irritation caused by ads and their value to the site.
As long as these ads give the guys a few bucks extra a month I don't mind them being on the frontpage O-)
It's rather more than a few bucks this time round, it's an important step to me finally not losing 4-digit figures per month anymore from running these sites.
EDIT: @Cleansweep. Blocking ads is like stealing from the site in a weird kind of way. Curry will explain it shortly, I'm sure of that.. I remember his earlier rants about guys using ad blockers and stuff..
It's simply theft :)
I'm planning to offer some kind of subscription btw later this year, that removes all advertising from our pages for a small yearly fee. Essentially it's the same: you pay for using the site either by viewing our ads, or by paying with money :)
Erm, no offence Jay, but where are said ads? I don't see them. :?
Well you're just a lucky Irishman :) See:
Vibrant In-Text Advertising and SmartAD advertising campaigns run in the following countries/regions: USA, UK, Canada, France, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
Btw I honestly don't see the problem with in-text advertising, it's an advertising system I've never been bothered about myself. They're clearly recognisable, they're only in the actual content (not comments etc.), and they don't do shit unless you hover them. It's not like they make sound or flash, or actually block content unless you explicitly activate them by hovering.

I disagree because it's not as if the ads are uncontrollable. In a minute I guess there'll be more ads than news content. It doesn't take a lot to push something too far that then makes it distasteful.
Everyone is aware that websites cost money to run thats undisputable and most ads here I hardly notice. The ones with the words are in your face and most people know how to deal with a site that is over run with ads dont they?
Plus I would pay to use the site ad free only because I come here often and its now part of a daily routine. I even tried donating once but I didn't because I don't want my address known to any of the crew as I am not aware of who can access what and that'll be the same with registering to pay for site usage - will addresses be necessary? but these questions dont need to be asked just yet I suppose.
Curry

I think you're in the far minority of people who honestly care about the in-text ads, but hey that's your free right :) In general I think you'll have to agree I've always been extremely lenient, and have blocked several campaigns once there were complaints from the community. In this case it's not a matter of a few dollars for a single small campaign though.
As for donating, there's a big 'Donate via Paypal' button on the FP, that's completely anonymous except for your Paypal-linked email address. And I'll state right here and now that anyone who's done a decently-sized donation to the sites is free to block banners subsequently, that's a fair deal :)
Site subscriptions later on will also only require email addresses of course, assuming you'd pay via Paypal. For other payment methods, such as credit card, you'd still only expose your real name, not address info, to the seller.

August 21st, 2007, 01:55

Point duly taken, and rest assured that I have no intention at all to let advertising get more intrusive like this. Put directly, I have no intention at all to change my policy concerning popups/unders, audio, warning dialogs or epilepsy-inducing advertising. I also have no intention of having any kind of 'content-blocking' advertising, however I do reserve the right to start using occasional interstitials (the IGN/Gamespot-like full-page ads that show 'Continue to site' in the top right) once we offer an ad-free subscription service.

I guess it's visitor stat's that determines if it affects your website in anyway...as in how many click 'Continue to Site' or just leave. Be nice if some sites let you choose what type of ads you want to see, (I've ordered a few holiday brochures from ad's Ive seen here recently for my mother 'holidaycottages' ) but I've often avoided the front page by just bookmarking: forum.xboxic.com - will the forums also change in line with your new ad plans?
Curry
August 25th, 2007, 13:08
Not much. No interstitials for sure, that's dead irritating on forums.
Also forums are less interesting for advertisers, that's the plain and simple reason they usually have less advertising on them.

Do like I always did at clients: turn off sound unless you need it for something :+
In all honesty, as you all know my policy is to shun ads that involuntarily hinder browsing or play sounds. Hovering over an ad is outside that policy because it constitutes a user action, and as such is allowed to make sound (within limits) and expand, as long as it can be easily reverted or cancelled by the user (either by clicking a close button or moving the mouse away).

A widget, that may I add, only does anything with user interaction so not unlike the hover ads.
Anyway, not bitter, just upset I can't let everyone play with my widget.
What did I miss? :?

He wanted to put something for everyone to see in the General Slowchat thread, except html isn't on so all it showed was the code for it in text view...
He's making a point that with all your ad's and the pointless comments on the FP - what he wanted to show was quite small in comparison... (I think :P )

Exactly my point.
As for length I can always change the size so just tell me what fits with you and I will adjust length and girth.

HTML is disabled on every bulletin board in the world for the simple reason that it enables thousands of known and unknown exploit methods to steal people's sessions etc., it's nothing personal ;)

Bah that's a fucked up interstitial :(
Rest assured I don't want to run them, but networks are a bitch to maintain, and especially this time of year. Like I've said before, interstitials are out of the question, and may only in the future be introduced on the frontpage when we're offering an alternative, and never on the forums.

Trust me man, I understand about needing to get revenue back on running this site. I'm not against that at all... unless they really interrupt going through the site smoothly. That's my only complaint. Other than that, rock on!

Wel, the ads are pretty bad here, blocking access to pages and auto expanding from their header. I cleared my block list so now I am getting them again, I understand that the site needs money to survive, give me a place to pay the $5 a year you will get from banner views and ad link clicks ... get me ad free :)
You could call it a "bake sale" and offer to sell a "cookie" that logs you past the banner ads or something. \o/

July 4th, 2008, 14:22
No problems here with the ads, aside from the occasional blinding flashing crap. Trouble with these type of ads is; they're one provider who has more names then banners. Blocking them from ad networks is hell. Keep reporting them though, maybe some day they will learn and die.

I don't mind the advertising but can't you make the sensitivity or the timing a bit different? It doesn't take much for that circuit city pop up to jump in front of your face several times while browsing the site. Can you make is so that the "pop up" does not occur unless your mouse cursor is on the AD box for a certain amount of seconds. Like after 2 or 3 seconds? Am I making sense because sometimes I don't even know what I'm saying. 8)

You ARE making sense. "Roll over to get started" is bullshit. It just pops up automatically. It covers the 'new posts' link every fucking time I click to do anything. AND it really fucks up phone browsers. I've been trying to tell them for months now.
