Is an IP address assigned to an individual computer? If I have two computers at the same location on a network will they each have a different IP address?

Hi Bernie, and welcome to the forums :)

An IP address is a 32-bit number (assuming IPv4 which is nearly always correct) that uniquely identifies a computer on a network. That does not mean 2 computers on a same network cannot have the same IP: just that the network will not function if that happens ;)

IPs are not worldwide unique, just within the network. Once you separate 2 networks, most commonly using a router and most notably between the internet and a local area network (LAN), the LAN can have IPs which are unique within, but can occur elsewhere since they're not on the same network.

Any minute now theres going to be a link somewhere to buy computer cables... I hate the 'people spammers' where they register first, get to know how to make a thread - then later on come along and try sell us crap...

Still it should be a compliment to the website that so many people want to spam here...shows popularity:D

Bernie did ask other questions that did not read like spam. I think we should not assume it's spam till proven spammy.

Like Is a 360 worth it? Only a spammer would come to a 360 forum and write is a 360 worth it...
He's come here with no 360, no PS3 as mentioned, so I guess his purpose is just.....................
