THE former rally driving champion Colin McRae was killed and his five year-old son feared dead in a helicopter crash yesterday afternoon. The aircraft came down in Jerviswood, Lanarkshire, half a mile from the family's home and burst into flames just after 4pm.

Jean-Eric Freudiger, McRae's agent, said the 39-year-old driver had been piloting the helicopter himself. Also on board were believed to be his son Johnny, another adult and another child. Police said there were no survivors.

Sad story, but what'll happen to the game franchise now?

I think Codemasters will relish all the extra attention to the franchise and sell a ton of copies of DiRT, and then find someone else to sponsor their off-road franchise to avoid being dubbed vultures.

Well I work in a supermarket and after the news broke we sold a lot more copies of the game... so like someone here said Codemasters will be loving this media attention...

All for the wrong reasons though... may he and the other victims rest in peace. He was a great asset to Scottish sport and he was immensly talented behind the wheel of a rally car.

I think the people making up the jokes... should you know lay off a little... bit soon guys... he's not even had a funeral yet and the jokes are coming. Wee bit respect for the man, eh ?.

As for the game series... Don't know where thats likly to go. I do know in the USA they had Travis Pastrana features quite heavily in it as he had been in the X-Games with Colin... My bet is they start using his name on the cover.

If Tigerwoods had died, I'd have been in bits !! - Montgomery 09 just wouldn't have the same ring to it, plus it'll mess up my organised game boxes... not sure who'll replace Colin McRae in that franchise, but someone who may influence online multiplayer racing as an addition in it would be a good thing :)

hilarious.
as someone who doesnt watch rally racing... doesnt play the dirt game... and otherwise would never have heard of colin mcrae if his name wasnt int he games title...

i come into this thread being a little sad about someone i don't know / barely have heard of. (i mean it would be like if i posted a thread saying my uncle died. and bring everyone down for someone they don't know.)

therefore the jokes were hilarious and brought a smile back to my face.

The fact that you did not personally know the man, his family or anyone on board the helicopter is irrelevant.

What is relevant is that 4 people died.
It shows a complete lack of class, let alone a lack of respect for a human life to make such needless 'jokes'. Don't forget, no one is invicible. One day, a tradegy will happen to you, your family, or someone very close to you. This isn't a 'repent as the end is near' comment, rather a cold ahrd slap in the face from reality. When that day comes, you won't be laughing.

Acting like a child in these situations doesn't benefit anyone. No one here personally knew the man. That his name/face were lent to a video game has no bearing on the fact that in death, we all deserve some degree of respect from the living.

I'd like to hope that the 'joking' comments above were a sign of immaturity and nothing else.

you always take some 'i'm holier than thou' moral highground in every situation. you make me sick.

i know people who've died. i have immediate family members who've died. obviously i wasn't laughing. but am i in some position now so that every time someone on this planet dies i'm going to shed a silent tear? no. fuck it. people die every day, and if it's not someone i know, it's not my problem. ya, it's sad,

but...

read the comments again.
its not a lecture, but rather a request for some tact.
And quite frankly, I couldn't care less what some piss-ant (augutus) thinks of me anyways. If respecting the deceased makes me seem I have 'godlike standards' then so be it.

I can't be bothered to explain myself any further.
Take humour in a man's death if you want. Thats a shitty thing to do and I don't think anyone can disagree. I'm done with this thread, and I'm done responding to immature children.

RIP Colin, your boy and the two others.

You're just very arrogant then?
Nobody is rolling on the floor laughing at a dead guy. I for one am certainly not, but sometimes I can smirk when I see what others have posted and that doesn't make me immature - makes me human.

I am man enough to take criticism's for my actions, but also intelligent enough to know every one of us are different and some people just do what they feel or think to express themselves. Any man & child dying in a helicopter crash is horrific, but I wouldn't come on telling people what's right or wrong - this isn't politics and no ones going to listen or take note of someone else making demands - nor am I defending anyone either in my comment.

Umm...

How about we all stop fighting over this eh...

Colin McRae is dead... and lets not forget, so too his son aged 5, his sons pal aged 6 and another man who was in the helicopter as well. His wife must be in pieces the now...

So...

A wee bit of FUCKING... RESPECT... would go a LONG way.

If you want to take the piss... make your own fucking thread for it.

I'm Scottish... this man was a sporting legend... and I don't appreciate the jokes as I'm sure the many Americans on this board probably didn't appreciate the 9/11 jokes that came about right after that happened.

So take it fucking else where. Theres a time and a place for jokes... and before the man's even dead a burried ISN'T the time.

End of Rant.

Colin... may you rest in peace.

Wasn't that when it was September 11 and there was people posting gif's of the plane hitting the towers and the shite THEY got about respect.

I can't compare both situations, totally different - but with most things, there are boundaries you shouldn't cross which makes things tasteless...

I saw his wife on Sky news earlier and the area he crashed, you just can't imagine what it must have been knowing you're gonna die in that helicopter. It was terrible.

We lost a great sporting personallity and a great ambassador for Scottish Motorsport in the most horrible way possible.

Guys stop with the bitching and whining. The jokes are, in my humble opinion, totally inappropriate. However for the sake of free speech the posts won't be deleted and will have to be either be taken lightly or simply ignored.

This topic is now filled up with enough arguing that it doesn't need any more, and continual arguing will simply result in the thread being closed. Either say your respects, or say nothing at all.

Colin... may you rest in peace. At least people making jokes about it are trying to put some light heartedness on such a downer, to be honest, if i died in a horrible way, actually when i die full stop, i would rather people make some jokes and have a laugh about it than cry and winge about it, bringing people joy even in such a horrible time, its a good thing. Again just to make this clear, i would much rather people had a laugh and such over my death than cry cry cry about it, may not be the same for everyone else, but its a nicer way to be remembered, even bringing jokes in death over "WAHHHHHHH WAHHHHHH WAHHHHHHH!!!!!! I DIDNT KNOW YOU! I JUST FOLLOWED YOU CAUSE YOUR FAMOUS WAHHH WAHH WAAHHH COME BACK!! WHY DID YOU DIIIIIIIE!! WAHHHH WAHH!!!111Ione."

Sorry mate but thats fucking bollocks, I'm not American nor Scottish, but compare the two: one sporting personality dies in an ACCIDENT, and hundreds of people die in a TERRORIST ATTACK, sorry, but the fact of the matter is, anyone that compares those to like they are similar is a fucking idiot.

Sorry if this offends anyone or whatever, but most people here know what i'm like when i'm drunk, and i am.

Lol, i was a bit on the drunk side, and i just think some people are looking a bit too deep into it, yeah people died, and that is sad, but everyone copes with things in different ways, if your way of dealing with it or whatever is to have a little joke, why not? It lightens the mood slightly, and its not being said to anyone who actually KNEW him so its not offencive (IMO) fair enough if someone that knew him came on here and people started making lots of jokes knowing someone close to him would see them, thats just nasty, but noone here knew him. I'm sure everyone here, people who made jokes out of this included, feels bad for his family and such, but that doesnt mean people cant try to make the best of something really really horrible.

I'm gonna shut up now, i'm hungover and have a headache, i think i'm just gonna have a nap.

My gran from Ayr, had her life machine switched off and we had a massive party for her, and everyone all got pissed - it was so much fun, moreso cos that's what she wanted, and everyone told jokes about her cos she won the yard of ale contest 9yrs in a row.

You're joke was terrible, but it's not that big a deal. It's not like you're at his funeral or anything. Disrespect comes in many forms, but I don't believe for one minute any one believes you're laughing at a dead man.

I'll show you what disrespectful is:
