Thryon is our office hero now (http://forum.xboxic.com/showpost.php?p=58025&postcount=40)!

http://files.xboxic.com/crew/curry/maple/img0984.jpg

A parcel arrived at the PO Box today! What would be in there?

http://files.xboxic.com/crew/curry/maple/img0986.jpg

Oooh the label looks promising....

http://files.xboxic.com/crew/curry/maple/img0988.jpg

It's a bunch of Canadian newspapers and a piece of cloth! Could they be protecting something?

http://files.xboxic.com/crew/curry/maple/img0989.jpg

The cloth turns out to be a very special Canadian-weatherproof longsleeve shirt. Cheers _o_

But what's that in the plastic bag?

http://files.xboxic.com/crew/curry/maple/img0990.jpg

Meanwhile, cat wants to fit inside box...

http://files.xboxic.com/crew/curry/maple/img0991.jpg

...and succeeds mysteriously, but what was in the bag?

http://files.xboxic.com/crew/curry/maple/img0992.jpg

Hooray, Mountain Maples 100% Pure Maple Syrup!

Thanks man, and it will be saved for a very special occasion ;)

Bleach22

Maple syrup pwns golden syrup.

Its runnier and has a more distinct taste, go buy some from the supermarket, the golden syrup company do it.

Thryon
October 16th, 2007, 19:10
Golden syrup is made from the sugar cane plant while Maple syrup is made from the sap of maple trees. The main difference is in the thickness and sweetness. Maple syrup is runnier and way more sweet than golden syrup. Also Canadian Maple Syrup is way more sweet than the American couterpart which tastes watereddown (just like their beer).

HAHA LOL.

I thought maple syrup was quite expensive (for a food product, you know... compared to syrup.)

It is way more costly that regular syrup. A bottle of corn syrup is about $1.99 compared to the same sized Maple syrup that is $7.99, but you do get what you pay for. :)

Strange, as most Canadians have family history in Europe. I will visit Europe some day, but I still have a lot of Canada to visit first.

My grandfather was from St Johns, Newfoundland and came to England in WWII. The rest of his rather large family stayed in Canada and have divided themselves into other area's around Canada...

Nah, our food isn't that bad. America's is just really awesome.

It's plentiful, and cheap. I only live a few hours from the US border, but what a difference. Our local Wendy's (fast food place for those that may not know), offers Biggie sized portions. A Biggie sized drink is a super huge 32oz glass, and a bigige sized fries is large enough for two. Actually that what the wife and I do, we order one combo, and a spare hamburger and share the drink and fries.

During our US trip, we found out that there are no biggie sizes in the US, and that these huge portions are actually mediums on their menus. I had made the accident of ordering a large fries and drink. The drink was 42oz (that is 1.25 litres to the rest of the world) and the fries was enough for both us us, and we tossed out half the pack.

Even the hamburger appeared larger than normal. I gained 2 lbs in 3 days. Back to the gym tonight. :D

I actually know people in Canada that DRINK the stuff. The real deal is actually quite good for your health (well I am not sure drinking it is recommended).

Did you have Canadian Maple Syrup, as I previously indicated, there is a difference between the Canadian stuff and the American version. New England and Maine maple syrup are quite similar to Canadian, just a little less sweet.

Dang, I never would have guessed that Maple Syrup would be such a sweet topic on this forum. :)

As I previously indicated, I will send out one bottle of the good stuff once a year to one lucky member of the forum. I will have to think up of a contest of some type to determine the lucky person. But this will not be till next year as I already shipped my 2007 bottle.

So I just had this serious flash back while reading this.
When I was about 6, and my parents current home was being built, we lived with my aunt/uncle for a few months (until the place was ready).
she lived (at the time) in the middle of no where. A farm across the street, and a huge forest just up the road. Since then, the area has been sold to developers and now there's about 400 new homes.

In that forest (about 1/8 the original size is left) there were trees which produced syrup. Since the area was home (again, at the time) to a relatively small group of people, the whole neighborhood (well, whomever was interested) would tap a few trees, attach a bucket and come back a day later.

I was only there for that one winter, but I still remember the smell in my aunt's garage when she was preparing the syrup. :9~

oh, and if you ever have the chance, after a fresh snowfall, take a bottle of maple syrup and pour it over some fresh (clean) white snow. Instant hard candy! Its some french canadian thing I remember from a trip to old Quebec city. Pretty tasty!

I get to live that experience twice a year :)

Oh, and the Maple Syrup will only solidify into hard candy if it is heated up first. You have to bring the maple syrup to boiling point, then pour it over fresh clean snow in a long thin layer, then take a popsicle stick and attach it to one end, then roll up the layer of maple syrup. If you want to attempt this, make sure you stir the maple syrup the whole time it takes to boil, or you will burn it, and waste the whole thing.

damn, if i die before then, i might not win it. fuck

Easy enough solution, don't die.8)

It is a lot more expensive than our Golden Syrup. Plus it's a small bottle of only 187 ml and its about £7 which is $15. A golden syrup equivalent is on £2 which is just over $4

The only thing I've tasted it in is fudge. I come from an area that makes a lot of fudge & custard, and you can get canadian maple syrup fudge which is very nice, but been about a year since I last bought some.

Ok, let me share a great simple recipe. Take a a cup of butter and half cup of maple syrup. Mix it well with an electric mixer, and chill.....voila, simple maple syrup spreadable butter that is extremly delicious on anything that you would use butter on (pancakes, toast, English muffins, bagels, waffles, baked potatoes, mashed potatoes etc...). Now you need not wait for pancakes.

the other day i made a nice 'recipe'-
get a big lump of icecream (vanilla was my preference)
stick it in the middle of a plate then stack belgian waffles with yankpancakes in between em, waffles at the bottom and top
push down so it sticks in and the icecream comes through the bottom waffle
then drizzle (or drown) it with maple syrup
get a nice cup o tea or coffee to accompany it and then destroy the bastard
thats some tasty muthafuckin shit
