Can anyone recommend an external drive that will be compatible with the PS3 out of the box ? Will I be able to stream media right from the drive ?

I know this is for PS3 not 360, but my Seagate external drive works fine plugged into a 360 USB port, streams videos and music fine. Know this isnt much help as its not the right console, but noone else had said anything so i added what small piece of info i could:)

Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 stream from external drives. They both just stream different formats.

Has anyone tried installing their own internal HDD? I wonder just how easy/hard it is?

It's about as easy as installing those memory modules in your laptop Ross ;)
Check your PS3 manual, it should be in there

Apparently(just did some research for you) any external HDD will work but it has to be formatted in FAT32 this format will also work on your pc. A downside to this is that there is a file size limit to FAT32 HDDs of 4gb(might be a problem if you got dvds saved on the HDD. One last thing: you have to create certain files so the PS3 can detect your vids, MP3s etc. just like with the psp you have to create MUSIC, VIDEO etc files. PS you cannot save game progress straight onto to the external drive but you can copy them over.
And yes you can stream your media, just make sure its in the right format.
