Would have been easier for you to ask one of the admins through PM, but at least you asked rather than just doing it. Sure Ross will be here soon enough explaining all:)

Dont we all;)
Gonna try be a bit of help here, dont count what i say as fact though, i could be wrong, but i would say if you stayed on here for a while, got involved a bit and such, dont think the guys will mind too much, as long as its not just pure smap (spam)
As i said though, could be wrong man, best to just wait see what Ross says:P

it's not an issue i just feel it would be prudent to ask first and avoid a confrontation than posting like an ass and get banned. it just a one time thing i got till saterday to find reffs for my ladder.

As far as I'm aware posting 3 useless topics in quick succession gets the offender banned. Like most spammers do.

Wow, very helpful.
No idea why there are cries for me, Curry is the guy to really ask, although I think an out and out thread straight away is frowned upon.
We have no problem with a link in your signature, however since you are new, your intentions are not clear, so whacking a post up right now and then never contributing again will naturally lead to a (whisper it) ban.
My view: too soon. Sorry.

Just saying you're usually the one to sort these things out.

No, any kind of advertising that directly conflicts with our own interests is considered spam. This primarily affects any kind of unsolicited commercial advertising, we have perfectly acceptable bannering rates after all, but secondly also any kind of posting which attempts to lure our readers into visiting sites other than this one without a proper reason such as news value. The fact that your intended link target is a competitor to our own site only makes the matter easier.
Thanks for asking, although I think you already knew the answer given the 'raiding fridge' comparison ;) You wouldn't appreciate it either if you had a loyal community and we would try to lure them to our site.

in all actuality this is the response i thought i'd get, true im a new poster and i understand the reasons. i will however follow your advice about linking it. anyway thanx for the heads up. in reference to the "competitors site" it's nothing like that. it's in compitition with other tournament sites but as far as news and editorials.. i find it hard to believe any one could compete with this site. hell i send most my friends to this site for news and updates.

And yes, I'd already seen 'competition' was theoretical, but it kinda is as far as the community part goes.

Bad beach taco?
despite popular belief, not all of us "californians" subject ourselves to poorly prepared tacos at the beach (i myself prefer bad beach chicken strips :P )

I think everyone made the right choice here.
I mean spam (not that I am saying your site is) is really deplorable in any way you look at it, just acts as an annoyance really.
Oh, you should check out http://www.myspace.com/rocksmiler if you get a moment though.

I don't think links to your own personal site should be considered spam unless you are trying entice or grow members to somehow benefit yourself in advertising money...facebook/myspace/ stuff like that is not spam in my book.
I have xboxic.co.uk, as most know - but it's only wrong if I went about turning it into a forum or news site and was desperate for people to sign up then come here posting about it.
I don't like spammers much - especially the smarmy ones who say how wonderful a site is, but can I pinch your members - this is the best site ever... that dark-whatever-he's-called-spammer has a myspace too it's where I saw his pic... maybe he'll take a peek :P

its a tournament GOW website right? nothing at all like this site except people communicate on it. Are you guys so shit scared of losing members that you dont let him even tell us the site name? you sad bastard!! the news on this site is always older than other sites- its not the best site by a mile but it has a 'loyal community' as you say- IE they stay here cuz they like it here, if you think folks are gonna jump ship the moment some random guy puts up a site link then you should be making this site better, right?
If your denying this guy the chance to add refs to his lil ladder games then surely youre bringin down gaming for this platform as a whole- some ubergeek may love that shit. enclaves been polite and asked nicely, whats the big deal?

At the moment Im doing nothing with it other than storage space for posting some pics n stuff. It'll never be a forum - moreso because I'm always here. It'll never be a news site because news is news everywhere, it just depends on your site preference where you read it.
TwoXist an old member here had also expressed interest in it, and for some reason when Im not thinking about it - I kept typing it in by accident instead of .com - then I'd done it enough times to just think I'll nab it without even thinking about it... i do these spur of the moment things at times...
maybe it'll be a themed t-shirt shop - who knows... not even me yet

have you signed up yet? the names in that guys signature.
The news here is older than others because (as mentioned in a rant by myself a long time ago) Other sites put up news, then people here rally round and find it. Newsposters take it - research it - then write bits on it. I ranted because I thought people were lining some peoples pockets without putting in the effort. Basically Zan was posting news non stop, Ross was writing news non stop & I begged Zan to stop posting news because something didn't seem fair...

Curry has justified it once. You are not worth another justification. No offence, but it's true.
And so as to end all this shit, topic closed.

Reopening since I don't mind justifying more than once ;)

It's not about this single case, it's about maintaining a consistent policy: allow one, and you implicitly allow all. The second we allow people to promote other sites here we open the floodgates for every possible site about not just games, but also viagra and ch34p w1nd0ze s0ftw4r3z to be advertised for free on here, all ready to defend themselves with 'but he was allowed!'.
And apart from that, while advertising gaming sites is less harmful than the regular spam, and as such they will not get deleted from signatures or occasional useful references, there's a huge difference between sharing a link at times and putting up a job inquiry. Imagine you own a supermarket, and the boss of the supermarket next door enters your store one day and starts spreading "come work for me" flyers to everyone including your employees. Would you appreciate it? The comparison is entirely valid.
the news on this site is always older than other sites
The news on other sites is also always older than other sites. There's a limited amount of news any publication can 'create', the rest of it has already been uncovered first by someone else. That goes for IGN, for Joystiq, for Kotaku, for Gamespot, and also for us. We prefer being correct, reliable and complete over always being fastest and then having to pull 4 articles a week because we skipped on research.
If your denying this guy the chance to add refs to his lil ladder games then surely youre bringin down gaming for this platform as a whole- some ubergeek may love that shit. enclaves been polite and asked nicely, whats the big deal?
You'd be shocked if you knew how much outright spam we delete already on the forums, and you'd be happy then to realize we're consistent.

I'll have one order of each the Viagra and the ch34p w1ndOze sftW43z please ;). Never know what the weekend will bring, right? Some ladies and a system format! Let the good times roll!!!!

I can recomend two very good attorneys to act as your counsel. Not sure if they can practice law in Holland (members of the Law Society of Canada), but their rates are resonable!:D
@Jay,
If Curry goes ahead with legal action, I can recomend two very good attorneys to act as your defense council (provided Curry doesn't sign with them first!!!):D
yes, playing both sides of the field. Just in it to win it gents.
And I sincerly doubt Jay would do anything like that.O-)

It's cool Mass..lol, the options are only limited to trademark infringement & passing off...
Trademark infringement would not make a case because of the different countries we live in.
Passing off would not make a case because Im a UK resident entitled to a UK domain name and posting widely available news is not against the law.

ok, youre right- you dont want loads of them guys comin in doin what is basically spam with a smile. I didnt mean to insult when i said your site often has old news, i meant people stay here even though other maybe more up to date and flashier sites draw their attention. this site has maple syrup and dodgy homemade cartoons- its safe to assume that even if kwik-save did come askin for workstaff, the marks n spencers employees would decline with a hearty laugh.
yes, in my comparison we all work in marks n spencers.
You are not worth another justification. No offence, but it's true.

Neither assumption is correct btw ;) Xboxic is an 'implicit trademark', in that it is not officially registered, but is registered to have been commercially used for 2 years now by a registered EU company, which practically means it's registered through 'first use', and protected anywhere we have a sizeable audience. And trademarks are a European affair, so believe me I would have a case in Brussels ;)
