View Full Version : The Nintendo Revolution is no more

It's now the Nintendo Wee... sorry, I mean 'Wii'.

Nintendo's entry into the next generation video game console war has been called many things by many people, but now it has an official name: "Wii" — pronounced "we."

The official naming of the console, which had been code named "Revolution" for what a spokesperson calls its "disruptive nature," comes less than two weeks before the world's biggest industry-only video game trade show, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3.

"While the code name 'Revolution' expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer," read a statement from Nintendo of America Inc. "Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else."

Wii's double "I's" are meant to represent the unit's unique controller, which is broken into two parts. But the word itself is meant to conjure up a sense of inclusiveness.

"It's really not about you or me," said the statement. "It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything."

The new console's name is part of a broader strategy by Nintendo to introduce video games to a bigger audience.

"Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak," the statement read. "No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii."

But not everyone is convinced it's a strategy that's necessary.

"I was one of those people who were hoping they'd just leave it 'Revolution,'" said Brian Crecente, editor of game blog Kotaku and video game writer for the Rocky Mountain News. "I really think this boils down to Nintendo trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist."

Crecente says the name of a console has never affected the gaming community's capacity to enjoy — or revile — it, and he doubts the name will have an impact on someone who doesn't game.

Still, he's reserving judgment, he says, until the name's had a chance to sink in.

Yeah, I wish they'd just left it as Revolution, but then if I had my way then my games collection would include an Ultra 64, a Katana and a Dolphin...

So the system is already behind the eight ball because of it's lower specs, questionable third-party support, and the fear of mostly novelty games. Then they name it "Wii?"

Clue #1 Marketing people: If you have to explain how to pronounce the name of the product and also explain WHY you named it such an asinine name it is a BAD name for a product.

this same kind of thing happened with the ds..."oh omg wtfzorz ds touch screen so effing stupid wtf nintendo dildo headz". then the ds came out and now its cool. im hoping the same thing happens with the Wii.

The Wii isn't trying to outperform the xbox 360 or the ps3 in specs, they're thinking outside the box and are going with new and different ways to enjoy interactive entertainment. The xbox360 and the ps3 can throw as many specs around as they want, but if they don't have the games that are worth playing for it, then it's worthless.

This next generation is soley about high-end graphics ystems. I mean of course, Nintendo is going to pull some new and innovative gameplay out of the hat. Nintendo does this each and every generation that comes fourth. I understand that Nintendo is for the kids and all, but Nintendo relies on their past reputations to much. Ever since Sony kicked them off of the corner with the Playstation, Nintendo just lost it. Speaking from a bussiness stand point, this is the wrong generation to come out with a console that will be driven by gameplay. This generation, people want graphics... and Nintendo will be once again left out.

I think you can be very mistaken there... I've seen the graphics, I heard the great sound effects, but who cares when the games suck? Or when they're too complicated for your friends to "jump in" and play?

I have a lot of friends who don't own a console, but like playing a game at my place once in a while. We tried CoD2, GR:AW, PGR3, DOA4, but all are games which need excercise to make it fun to play together. Because now it's too easy for me to beat them because the games take time to learn, controlwise and gameplay wise

But with Wii Nintendo will change this at last, we already had MarioKart, SSB:M, MarioParty, which are great games to play with novice gamers. They just grab a controller and learn instantly, within minutes.
Now with the new Wii controller it will become an even less barrier to play games together on an equal level regardless of experience (ofcourse a good and experienced player will still be better, but the equation of 'more game time = more advantage' does not apply here anymore)

So I say bring on Wii, and not just for kids (I am 26 years old, and really looking forward to this). Finally once again, since the days of SNES and Megadrive I can have fun in the same room again with friends who don't own a console.

As they say: it's about us together, Wii will change everything. The more I think of it, the better the slogan gets.

Nintendo relies on their past reputations to much.

That sounds exactly like SONY this time around, with the hype machine that every single sony fanboy will buy into. As long as there's a plastic sony logo on the side of the console, it's better than anything that's available in their eyes.

Hmmm...

Nintendo was a 'evil' company in the 90's.
You had to pay them a lot to develop for it, and they screwed philips and sony, (ces 1992 or something).
They say that SNES game royalties were more than now PS2 developement.
Also that Ultra 64 was supposed to look like a SGI supercomputer. anyway.

In the end they got what they deserved. Neither the N64 nor the Gamecube were no1 like the other consoles were before them. Not even no2 in some cases, thanks to your beloved xbox ;)

Some say they survived the N64 because of the gameboy/pokemon.

Wether this is true or not, i cannot confirm. It says on the internet.

On the inet it says also other things.
That Nintendo is the only company that makes money on the console hardware. This, offcourse is total bullshit.

Back ontopic: now everybody does like nintendo is a charity company that doesnt want to make profit, but make everybody happy, etc.
That the revolution is the best thing ever, even though nobody played it. And so on.

The xbox1 had more 'original' titles than the gamecube.
Even though this is fact, they want to make it look like the xbox1 has only fifa 2001 2002 2003, and need for speed 1 2 3 4 5.
They forget ninja gaiden, halo, splinter cell, project gotham, etc.
What did nintendo gamecube introduce?
that is correct, monkey ball, and a few other titles that nobody really knows. Oh pikmin is good.

And now everybody thinks that for years they make gaming a better world.

They even say that revolution online will be better than xbox live.

After the revolution is released, the bullshit will stop.

...And they will have the excuse that is was because the name sucked ;)

A darn good excuse if you ask mii ;)

Btw, phusebox makes a very valid point, but it seems that nobody is smart enough to respond to it.

Well, it is very nice that the games will be more accesible, that i can ask my mother to join in super mario tennis, or maybe golf.
But for me this is no advantage, because i can hold a controller and are used to pressing buttons really fast (aka winning in tekken ;) *).
Another questing, do they want to play mario golf really easy? when they can sing or use their bodies to solve puzzels or things like that (ie eyetoy)

I think the Wii is a cute name. Nintendo has been good to me, as the only two systems i've ever owned were a Supernintendo and a Gameboy color.

So when did this turn into Nintendo bashing? They're behind in the technology race, that's obvious, but give them the chance to show their stuff and don't freak out just because the name sounds childish.

You may be surprised :)

But ignoring forum retards, (for I myself can be quite the troll on occasion)(PS3 PWNZ!!! lawl), WII sounds amazing. The more and more I read about it, the more fun it sounds.

I have an HDTV, i have my thousand dollar stereo setup for surround sound, and i love high quality gaming... but everything i hear regarding the WII topic is correct: high quality graphics on current games come at the cost of the story. we're getting better and better graphics with worse and worse stories, worse and worse gameplay, all just to render another pixel in the distance (Score 1 for WII!). Allowing drunken friends to enjoy a gaming session w/o getting severely destroyed is a HUGE ADVANTAGE of a system. When i sit down with any new game on ps2 / xbox its almost annoying to play the first level and learn wtf im doing and htf i do it. With the WII's intuitive controller this wont be a problem (Score 2 for WII!)

And girls. ooooh girls. Mario Party is the only game i've ever played w/ a girl for over an hour, and if and when WII brings more of that to me... noice!! :). (5 additional points for WII. Female gamers are teh hot.)

Wii, have fun.

Actually over the last few month I've gone from "perhaps" to "probably" on the Wii, while I just don't think a PS3 will be worth 600 or offer anything my 360 hasn't been providing me for the last year. It went from "perhaps" to "probably not" since the price point was released 8)7

I don't cling to single game franchises like so many people do. Halo, MGS and Super Mario Bros mean nothing to me. If Halo 3 is a good game, I'll buy it, if it's not, I won't. If MGS isn't appearing on 360 and I don't have a PS3, I'm not buying it and I won't lose a second of sleep over it.

I was pretty rude in my initial post or two (this is what, my 6th?), sorry. Since then i've come to respect this site a lot more and as w/ my previous post, all future posts will be constructive ;)!

But I do *trust* in Sony.

I was pretty upset when I first heard Wii wouldn't have HD but i'm way over it now. 480p is more than enough for me :). As of now i just have this picture in my head of what gaming on the wii will be like.

ex: currently, every friday / saturday night when drinking, fight night round 3 is played nonstop (in allllll its HD glory!!), between maybe 4 of the 10 or so people drinking. the learning curve isn't tremendously steep, in fact it's my first sports game i enjoy/play and i mastered it within a week, demolishing my sporty roomates. but there is a learning curve, one that definately wont be mastered w/ 5 beers and a beautiful lady behind you.

with wii: i envision a glorious friday night with naked ladies playin video games and controllers dancin around the room as people play drumbs, shoot arrows, punch each other, whatever it is we'll be doing w/ these nunchuk controllers. confetti will be ceaselessly pouring from the ceiling as we revel in the fun the wii offers us. everyone in the room will be interacting, not a section of drinking games and a section of gamegames. it will be heaven!

(on that note: why hasn't ANY developer made a serious 'Drinking Game' video game. the possibilities are endless. i mean, take monkey ball, super mario party, and smash bros, and mario kart, and slam them together w/ an adult theme and a few alcoholic sponsorships, and BAM, you got a greatest hit.)

But I do *trust* in Sony.
I do too. I'm fully expecting the PS3 to be a mind-blowing next-generation gaming console. The only thing that bothers me is that it's one year later than that other mind-blowing next-generation gaming console, doesn't add anything more than a BluRay drive that I don't care about to the package, and is $200 more expensive. I mean, I'd be considering at $350~400. Now it's just overly expensive for something I already have been doing for the last 6 months. It's not like I'll be buying the HD-DVD extension the day it's released. I'll wait until the drive wars have settled, and if it's BluRay in the end we all know Microsoft will have a BluRay 360 extension out in a minute. For under $100 by that time.
I was pretty upset when I first heard Wii wouldn't have HD but i'm way over it now. 480p is more than enough for me :). As of now i just have this picture in my head of what gaming on the wii will be like.
Wii is just aiming at a different market. For $200 it qualifies as a 'toy', something you buy for your kids at Xmas. It can get away with not doing bleeding-edge stuff at that price point.

YES! It's war!! Nintendo and Sony are pointing fingers :) Guess Sony forgot that they build the playstation as an addon for the Super Famicom (snes) and decided to steal the whole gamingconsole idea 8)7
Phil Harrison claims Nintendo "started it" back in 1996 when they used real time 3D graphics after Sony had already done so. Sony, claims Mr. Harrison, have not copied Nintendo's motion-sensing but have simply decided to implement it at this particular point in time.

Nintendo and Sony have already started their private little war over motion-sensing technology and controllers. This time Sony's Phil Harrison has responded to recent comments by Nintendo UK's boss David Yarnton who recently used tough words, claiming that Sony ...didn't innovate, they copied.

SCEE boss Phil Harrison wanted to nip such arrogance in the bud and set the record straight by stating: In a way I understand why people say [we stole Nintendo's idea], but it is a little stupid, if you forgive the remark. So he understands stupidity and we can now move on to the arguments.

When we brought the PlayStation to the market in 1994, we introduced real time 3-D graphics for the first time. When Nintendo launched its N64 in 1996 it also had 3D graphics, did we say, 'Nintendo stole our idea!'? Obviously not. Such innovations become possible because of a combination of technology, cost and manufacture capacities. So it is obvious that Nintendo started it.

We've been working on (motion-sensing technology) for a long time and Nintendo has certainly likewise already been working on something similar. The difference between our strategy and that of our competition is that our controller is still similar to the Dual Shock, the industry standard controller. I estimate that nearly 400 million Dual Shock controllers have been sold worldwide.

So there you have it, the myth that Sony copied Nintendo finally refuted.
