Help! when playing games i am lagging!!

i have a amd athlon x2 3800, with a gig of ram, a 8600gts overclocked video card (256mb), 500 watt psu, and when playing need for spoeed carbon, i am lagging on all video card setttings, would another stick of 1 gig ram help the problem??
