I might be getting a PS3 in May...

I've owned an Xbox 360 since its launch. Ok, so I said I would never buy a PS3. I also said I would never buy a Wii but I bought one of those last summer. :P

I really want Blu-Ray movies and I've been talking about it with my wife for 6+ months. Well my birthday is coming up in May and I have this gut feeling that she is going to surprise me with a PS3. It is the little things she has asked me in the past few weeks regarding PS3 and Blu-Ray, even comments she has made stressing that we won't be going Blu-Ray for another 2+ years when I didn't even mention anything about Blu-Ray before she said it. I think she is trying to get me down about it to make the surprise even that much bigger. I may be completely wrong but I guess I will find out eventually. :)

The PS3 is a great piece of hardware, game library aside - it has a lot going for it as a budget Blu-Ray Player.

Positves
- Great Video Quality, almost on par with the best players
- Price
- Extensive Sounds Support, with one exception

Drawbacks
- No Hardware Scaler *
- No IR support. you can by bluetooth remotes for ps3, or an IR to usb converter from Nyko, there is also this thing (http://ir2bt.com/), which allows you to use a fancy logitech harmony remote, but it's $55 US
- DTS-MA is not supported at this time, there is a chance it will be added in future via Firmware (20th Century Fox movies)

* A scaler is not required for Blu-Ray, the PS3 can scale via software to 720p if need be. However, some games only support 720p, so if your TV only supports 480p/1080i you're stuck with 480p. Also, 1080i/p native televisions with poor scalers may reduce image quality of a 720p sourced game.

Yeah I own a 360 and primarily buy all my games for the 360 because of Achievements, however the PS3 is a great machine in its own right, and now that it has rumble that pretty much seals a very good package.

Many of its capabilities are superior to the 360, such as the DVD upscale (only the HD-DVD player upscales DVDs for the 360 as far as I'm aware).

I should add that I also love the 360 pad. The PS3 pad isn't bad, but no comparison to the mighty 360 one.

I get on fine with them although they are not as good as the 360's triggers, my advice if you are slipping of them is to go and by some grip tape, like what is used by skateboarders, stick it on and no more slipping i guess.

I thought as you guys say yours plays home burn't dvd's i better re-check mine as i got a new 360 when my old one RROD, yes it does play my er.. totally legitimate home made dvd's ;).

Still would never use it though as it still sounds like a tornado when it spins discs, i will admit my fault but my old one definitely didn't play them as i tried many types of dvd's and burning software to get it to work.

So to reiterate 360's DO PLAY HOME MADE DVD'S or at least some of them ;)

I have found that the multimedia side of the PS3 is so much better than the 360. On the 360 I could play hardlys any of my .avi movies, but on PS3 I have South Park Season 10 and 11 saved on the hard drive (Also another great feature) and they play fine.
Also, you can copy stuff over from a pen drive/external hard drive. Which is great. For the PS3 to be absolutely complete for me though, it needs the XMB in-game, which is said to be the next update and I remember Sony confirming that it's coming to the PS3 sometime in the summer.

Buying a game here or a movie there is not a problem right now. The wife and I like to have fun and spend money on things like that. But $400 for a PS3 is something that we have hesitated on. We had a good excuse to NOT buy one before the format war was won by Blu-Ray. I can't use the "there are two formats" excuse to delay my brain. Once my wife finishes school and becomes a registered Nurse we will be better off financially. But then again we want to buy a house and have a kid so I'm sure that will hit the wallet hard. It's never ending. That's life I suppose.

I'm at work... Monday morning and all but it's as good of a Monday as I can get. Got the PS3 and I have some vacation days coming Fri, sat, sun, mon, tues. Send me some FR guys!!!! I'm a newb to PS3 but I've done some poking around and I'm getting the hang of the menus, etc. I still like the Xbox360 controller much better than the PS ones, NO big deal to me though. It's a great system. I downloaded some demos and stuff already. I'm having trouble registering my console on the PS3 website. Says the S/N is invalid.:? I guess I'll have to call them. Anyway to register through the PS3 console itself?

I played the MLB game and I thought it was great. I prob won't buy it though, maybe next years version.

Haze demo was absolute shite. Don't buy it.
I'll send an FR next time im on, I advise to buy Warhawk (It's okay at times, not the best but it's okay), GTA4, Guitar Hero 3, Motorstorm, Unreal Tournament 3, F1 Championship Edition, Resistance, Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 and GT5P, can't comment on other stuff as I havn't played anything else, but all the games I have played were good.

as I mentioned previously, most of my gaming will be on Xbox 360. FPS and such I prefer on the Xbox. But something like Socom in Sept will be on my list! I can't wait to see what they do with that. Maybe MGS if it gets good reviews. I have to say that I prefer the Xbox 360 controller over the PS3 controller. Sony should have revamped a better controller for the PS3. Other than that I'm loving the system!... it's so quiet when running.

But, i'm just happy to be away from my shithole school forever. It's not so much MGS4 being released allthough that does add to the day as it's one of my favorite games.

My setup with my PS3 on the bottom shelf. You guys are right about it being a dust collector. lol. It's a pretty piece of electronics but within a few days it was covered in dust! :)

We have watched at least 20 movies on the PS3 :) My friend list is slowly building, I found an old friend of mine that has a PS3 and got him on my list. My Xbox 360 is still getting most of the gaming attention, COD4 and GTAIV.

My friend got me Resistance as a gift when I got my PS3. I didn't like it at first but once I started playing it I really enjoyed the story and playing through. Online is junk but whatever. I'm interested in continuing the story when Resistance 2 comes out. What I'm really looking forward to is Socom. MSG4 is getting some good reviews... I might break down and get that if it's as good as it sounds.

Ah not down this way - in stores my area PS3 games are all £49.99 and 360 games £34.99 - £39.99 with a few £19.99 ones...
