View Full Version : End for motion sensing?

So, the reviews are (mostly) in on the next two big Wii games, Smash Bro's and Mario Kart. Huge franchise games for Nintendo, Flagship characters, broadly appealing and no doubt, will both sell in the bucket load.

I've noticed though, a recurring issue raised in reviews of these games across the board - both, apparently, play better on a standard controller.

Is this the way of things to come?

Has Wii software already outgrown the limits of the Wii remote?

Are we ever going to get a Mario Kart that lives up to the SNES original? (ok, separate point)

Good points but no!

They made these sequels (too?) traditional, they are the same games they have always been with new content.

One only needs to look at Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, and Zelda to see how sequels to great franchises CAN be re-imagined to benefit from a new control scheme. However, I think Nintendo is wise enough to recognize that Motion Based Controls are not always the way to go.

In a similar fashion, I like N a lot, but I try not to shove it down everyone's throat all the time.

I don't know - what is your own view on it ?

Well given that Mario Kart doesn't function 100% with a "real" controller, I'd say motion sensing wasn't dying out.

So far I feel much the same way about motion sensing as I do about those novelty peripherals like the bongos. guitars and fishing rods - undoubtedly good fun but unsubstantial.

There's no doubt that Nintendo have done wonders in broadening the audience through the Wii, but having spent some serious time with it now, I don't accept that the remote represents the future in the same way the NES joy-pad once did.

Although Galaxy and Metroid both worked very well ( I thought it detracted from Zelda) I do believe they did there damnedest to get Smash Bro's and Kart to work well with the remote and i think it's significant that apparently neither do.

I'm starting to see the Wii future as a double life - Remotes for swinging golf clubs and training brains , pads for "proper games".

If you mean the stunts thing, you can with a controller - tap the d-pad.

I didn't like the Wii-mote at all to be honest and stood around waving my arms around just felt wrong and stupid. I prefer control pads more for quick precision really. Motion sensing would work better as a glove - but im guessing come 2015 it'll hopefully be possible...:D

Only two control pads have ever felt perfect to me... One being the Sega MegaDrive & The other being the Xbox360

Well Nintendo have stated that the use of a Gamecube pad or a Classic pad will result in certain things not functioning. It hasn't been stated what those things are though.

By the sounds of it its the "waving your arms about like a flid", or maybe the "restriction of fun" function?

Agreed!

The 360 pad is definitely the best controller I have ever used. It couldn't be any better.

what if it tickled your under carriage while you played? Certainly that would be better than no under carriage tickles? no?

maybe its just me then.....

You got me confused on that one... what is your carriage - because if you got something I am missing out on, I want to know about it

I've always reffered to the area between my scrotum and my arse hole as my 'under carriage'. Its often called "the gooch" as well.

You Euro's call it something else I presume?

A wired controller would solve that problem.

Where exactly do you hold your controller when you play, anyway? Between your legs?

we just call it the taint.
1. taint

The area between the nutsack and asshole that prevent a man from shitting on his nuts. See durf (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=durf).

If it wasn't for the taint, my nuts would reek of poo!
