View Full Version : Sony ripping off Microsoft in a big big way!

There've been a few interesting announcements today, by all accounts.
They've decided to ditch the stupid-looking pad we were all expecting and are instead going with a wireless version of the old duel-shock (a smart move, methinks).
However, let's just think about the new pad's features:
* Wireless capability as standard
* USB socket on the top for recharging
* A "Playstation Button" on the front (sound familar??) for accessing internal menus.
* Four led indicators for whichever player the pad corresponds to.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I think they've pretty much admitted they're nicking almost every XBL idea too, right down to having a "Playstation Card" which will contain "Playstation Points" for spending on downloadable features.
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM....

I not sure they've failed, but certainly dissapointed.

Yeh your right!!!
That controller!!! What a cheap bastards at Sony.
I hope that they will lose this battle with Microsoft.
The launch of the PS3 wil go the same way as the PS2 the price way to high and no interesting titles for over a year.
And there Xbox life ripoff will fail bigtime.
Mark my words!!!

They are actually copying in another way. MS came out with a motion sensing gaming pad for the PC in 1998/1999 called the Sidewinder Freestyle pro. I know, because I bought one.

Sony is indeed leeching ideas from both Microsoft and Nintendo, only they are not going to be able to compete. I predict Sony will ultimately fall into 3rd place in the console wars. Microsoft has first locked up already and after Nintendo's press conference, I feel they will be giving Sony a tough fight for second (depending slightly on final retail cost of the Wii)
...just my 2 cents.

Sony will probobly survive this gen on name recognition alone. But MS and Nintendo will take a huge chunk out of there markett share. I know that I want a Revolution (i refuse to call it the Wii) from what I've seen and herd about the system.
In the mean time I will just laugh at Sony for there massive stupidity.

Yes, Sony are "ripping-off" Nintendo and Microsoft. But saying that, didn't Microsoft copy the Eye-Toy? And the Gameboy "toy-camera?" (forgot what it was called.)
If you look back, a lot of games and consoles have copied each other...

Yeah, and that's fair enough when it's the concept of an entire peripheral (like, say, a camera) - but the "Playstation Button" is so much a carbon copy they would have been just as well leaving an X on it.

I always liked sony, although i'm a Xbox Fanboy (explains why i'm working for this site :P) But now Sony did go to far. I liked their innovations with the Slimline Playstation models (that slimline is REALLY small) but now they did steal to much for their own product. I hope their online service will fail, and see Microsoft as a new market leader, and Nintendo second. But that will not happen, because sony will win on name recognition alone.
As for the 'home button':
http://news.ccidnet.com/zhuanti/2005E3/Reuters.files/sony_ps3_controller_big.jpg
this was a few days after the xbox2 announcement, as you can see it is recessed so i don't think they glued it on because they saw microsoft had one too.
as for the xbox360 'trigger' buttons:
http://joypadgame.com/images/ps2/negcon.jpg
if have one like this at home, nice concept. But this is 1994, so there you go.
I remember a friend having a megadrive motion sensitive controller, but mattel made for nintendo in 1989 a powerglove or something, so that was earlier.
If you put the xbox 1 or 360 controller net to a dual shock and a sega dreamcast controller, then you can see who is the one that is ripping off ;)
But some may be too fanboy to see that :)

That takes it a little too far E2k. You could also say Sony, Microsoft, Sega, and Nintendo copied off of Atari for having a 'controller'.
When you see someone defend a company after every single move they make, they lose their credibility.

Just because that picture showed the ps logo in the middle does'nt mean it's a button. Remember the xbox controller with the X in the middle? just a logo, not a button.

FYI. the controller as we all know it was created by nintendo back in the late 70s begin 80s somewhere. Everyone 'stole' that design. Atleast MS has the decency to pay for a licence ;)
then all of the points you mentioned earlier are bullshit.
there is not a single thing of xbox that was a first to gaming.

I thought the guide button was a pretty original feature, although I'm perfectly happy to be proven wrong if you tell me who did that first?
The "Ring Of Light" was also unique, and Sony have copied that, but again, if I'm wrong, who did that first?

the ring of light is that thing that you see flashing red all the time? ;)
if you mean a led on the controller to identify which player it is, there obvious have been controllers earlier. first of all, some rc car 'controllers'.
Also a kid who i have to babysit sometimes have i think a mad catz controller that is wireless, and it has two 'frequencies', push the switch to the left and it will light the left red one, and visa versa.
Pirhana can also be the brand, anyway it is third party.
The 'guide' button..
Noobs!! The PSP has that already. check it up. it is called a 'home' button.
But to really put it into perspective:
the PSX http://www.presen.co.jp/EVENT/EVE/EVE-109/PSX.jpg
has a guide/home button.
While playing games you can press it and then you can watch/record tv, browse the internet, music etc.
Like I said, a lot of xbox fans, as you can see are total noobs, they think microsoft invented everything and so on. But the only thing they know is halo. But it's okay because you make me laugh anyway :)

The ring of light's never been red for me once (aside from when I was changing AV cables without turning it off first, but that was my own fault) - I've barely had a problem with my 360, happily.
Well mate, I told you I was happy to be proven wrong, and I can hold my hands up and admit, yeah, fine, I was wrong.
But the noob thing makes me laugh - I'm almost 25 and I've been playing computer games for 20 years now - can't keep track of EVERYTHING in the market, y'know! ;)
I think the RC Car thing is a bit of a stretch though, because we're talking computer/console equipment, not toys - fair enough on the MadCatz thing though, although it doesn't auto-sense which it should be using by means of the auto-detect buttons on the controller/console.
Lastly, I'm not a MS fanboy by any means - I've owned almost every (non handheld) major console in the last 20 years, and every model of Gameboy aside from the new 'micro' ones. I've never gone near a PSP, hence why I didn't know about the 'home' button. The battery life issue put me off them, to be honest.
If I were to be fanboy-ish towards any company, it would be Nintendo, frankly, who always stick to their stance of imagination over technology, which is why they make the best games out there.
:)
Ah it's okay, sorry if i called you a noob, but from your response you are not.
I just saw that you opened the topic, but normally when i see something like this, i read it and then i correct it, if it were wrong i mean.
But you probably made the statement to allow for some interresting discussion. Which is good, because it cannot be:
"xbox is great, the rest is stupid!!!"
"yeah"
"true dat!!"
"yeah man, i mean $ony sucks and nintendo is for kids"
"yes, healo rocks!!!"
etc all the time
hope you get my point. :)
In the contry i live, we have a media market, a shop chain with a lot of electronics and digital media.
I have seen two times that a xbox had a red ring.
I also made a movie of it with my cell phone. It was so funny, the xbox on one side said "read error" and the other one had the light flashing.
But there was nothing on screen so maybe they ripped out the cable like you said.

Well, it is a forum after all - without anything decent to talk about, it'll just descend to sniping and sillyness, which has its place, but it's a dark and evil place, full of bad spelling and terrible grammar.
;)
The 360s in those shops may possibly have overheated, too - they're probably left on all day with very very little decent ventilation. You tend to find that's one of the main causes of so many people's problems with the 360 - they shove the powerpack somewhere with no air circulation and then wonder why it melts through the floor!

www.xboxic.com has been a wonderful source of all news 360 related, however the forums are nothing but hilarity.
I also think it's hilarious that pretty much the only thing that cost points to download from the E3 stuff... is the Halo theme and Gamertags... (I'm willing to bet every kid arguing against you here has bought both.)
I never had an xbox and am IN LOVE w/ my 360.
But I'll buy a PS3 even if there's not a single unique title for it. I mean... it says Sony on it, after all.

I'm pretty sure Xbox-Live Marketplace is pretty original, but your bound to go on Google and out smart me with some link to a website that hates Xbox and Microsoft and will write anything just to think that the Playstation is 100% better.

Pretty expensive for some letters in a Spiderman font ;)
Having to pay for the Halo stuff is no surprise since you have to pay for all of the games-related themes and picture packs and the Halo stuff is the only games-related stuff that has been released during the E3. All of the other stuff was for X-Men and Adidas. Stuff like that is usually free, see Nacho Libre.

even more hilarious is how i have more gamerpoints than everyone in this thread. how do i link my gamertag?
i sure hope ps3 has gamerscores too.
numerical representations of how leet you are is a great idea. one sony should definately steal!
edit: ok look, i came into owning a 360 scared... xbox is even more renowned than blizzard when it comes to fanbois... and it's definately being displayed here.
now obviously this is an xbox site, so it's semi understandable, but to read some of these posts, they are pretty ridiculous (not just this thread).
360 is great. it offers all(most) the power of the ps3 a year before ps3 was released. kudos to them for that, i bought one, i have over 1500$ into it by now, and i love it. live is amazing and has been for however long its been out and ps2 has had zilch. marketplace is a great idea, but poorly implemented thus far. perhaps having the threat of competition from sony and even nintendo (download old games) will spur microsoft into putting ONE halfway decent download on the marketplace (aside from GW:E).
But to argue that the lights on the controller have been stolen? What would you have sony do? with the shift from wired controllers to wireless also comes the necessity of knowing your position and the position of others. A light (an invention not credited to microsoft) is a pretty good, user friendly, cost effective way of doing that.
XBOX got the one up by releasing a year early. PS3 gets the one up by seeing what works well for consumers, and taking advantage of that.
so don't pretend ps3 isn't going to be amazing just because it takes advantage of a few <basic> innovations made by microsoft.
save your money. i heard ps3 will be pricey.
but obviously worth it.

So I have decided to chime in. So first off I am new to the Xbox world with the purchase of a 3rd gen 360 a few months back. I have really enjoyed the system thus far, although some of the games have an unpolished feel (choppy framerate mainly). The Xbox Live connectivity is amazing, with seeing what all your friends are up too and the voice chat. I wish they would just go ahead and release the old Live classics, especially after seeing the E3 video. So I am a fan, but not a fanboy.
To claim Sony ripped off Microsoft is just dumb. In the console war everyone rips off everybody else, the disadvantage of ripping off tech is that your stuff gets released second. Anyhow my main point is the hippocritical nature of any fans of Microsoft claiming other companies are ripping them off... Lets go back to the 80's when Microsoft ripped off Xerox with the mouse, and then Apple with the GUI OS which ensured their software domination for all of our lifetimes. This also gave Microsoft the capital to do whatever they want without much risk. Since then Microsoft has tried to buy every market they have entered (they are attempting to do this with videogames by buying previously 3rd party studios). And this is all fine, cause as a fan of all videogames the more competition generates fierce competition amongst the bigs (Nin, Sony, Micro). What the gaming market doesn't need is for one console to rule them all, cause we have all seen how crappy things can get with the sports games licence monopoly's by EA and Segasports. Fanboy's of any genre just annoy me for their ignorance.
Let the future of gaming be original, innovative and diverse. Or basically the opposite direction it is currently going. On this point I give Nintendo props for the Wii (despite the crappy name). The HD gloss Sony/Micro are offering can be nice, but solid core gameplay is what I crave and hope is what sells games (Although Star Wars Episode 3 for PS2 proves this wrong).
PS - Anyone calling themselves, or have been called by others, a Halo Fanboy most likely didn't own a gaming PC before 2001. And yes I have played many hours of Halo multiplayer and I still don't understand what the fuss is about.

As many people would be surprised to learn, I've never owned a console before my 360, at age 27 too :)
So I am a fan, but not a fanboy.
I've yet to see a real Xbox fanboy on this site. There's been technically incorrect statements sure, but being misinformed or less informed does not make one a fanboy. Actually being well informed and still claiming otherwise would make the true fanboy imho.
I've been called a fanboy over and over again by E2k for claiming the PS3 is an overpriced console battling its direct competitor one year too late with similar hardware inside. With 10+ years experience in computer hardware and far more experience at computer programming, I knew I was right. Since E3, the rest of the world also knows I was right. The fact that noone was impressed at Sony's pressconf was not that it wasn't impressive what they were showing. It's just that everyone has seen it already. On a machine for sale today. For $200 less.

And THAT is exactly the reason why Microsoft holds back information from us till the last moment (like prices for the accessoires), just because of the competition! That worthless piece of crap hasn't even got Rumble function, haha! It's just like nintendo stated: "Developers make something good, then they make sequels wich are selling. That strategy works... For a while. Change is GOOD!" :P

I have to agree with you both. Played it couple of years ago and couldn't see what's so special about Halo. I still can't believe It's the most played game on live after all those years. All I saw was a 1 out of a dozen FPS. I liked the halo in the sky though ;). It still cannot compete with the Duke imho. Time for The Duke to show his face on the 360. As he would say: "It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum and I'm all out of gum" or "Your face, your ass... What's the difference" _o_

I agree - I don't see the fuss in Halo either.
Although to be fair I think I've only liked two FPS games a lot in my entire life, and they were:
Aliens Vs Predator 2 (PC)
Unreal Tournament (encompassing the sequels) (also PC)
I just don't think consoles are set up for them - nothing beats the keyboard/mouse combo.
I just think the FPS genre is getting way too overloaded, too. It seems like every second game that comes out is an FPS - the genre became stagnant long ago, and (Half Life 2 aside) there's not been a game for a long time that's tried something new with regards to gameplay.

I don't agree that consoles aren't fit for FPS. I'm an oldschool Quake 1/2/3 veteran, and although I had some troubles adapting I completed CoD2 on Veteran without much problems after some solid training. It takes getting used to, sure, but I'd sure as hell stand a fighting chance in multiplayer against a mouseplayer. Mouse will always have the swift turn advantage, but apart from that the analogs give more than enough control.

You may stand a chance, sure, but I still maintain that an expert mouseplayer will always beat an expert padplayer, or at least 9 times out of 10, simply because the response times are so much quicker and more intuitive.
It'd be different, perhaps, with a mouseplayer against someone using the Wii controller, but I think a general analog stick control for an FPS would always come second best to a mouseplayer of the same skill level.
