Microsoft announced today that beginning on September 29, 2008 from 12:01 AM PST until 11:59 PM PST, Xbox Live and Xbox.com will be down. The purpose of this scheduled maintenance is to prepare the service for the upcoming release of the New Xbox Experience user interface that will replace the existing Xbox 360 dashboard.

I'd imagine that the Zune Marketplace shares a lot of the servers or whatever with the Xbox Live networking. Considering the Zune and 360 can already "interlink", I wouldn't get too excited.

Zune 3.0 added games to the system, so I now have Hexic and Texas Hold Em on there, but they come free. You likely have to buy special versions of them or something. I can't give specifics because the US Marketplace is blocked for me now :(

Just read somewhere that they might make the Zune Marketplace available via Xbox Live, ie. via console, which would be interesting. Not for me of course as I don't have the luxury of the Marketplace, but Americans will no doubt utilise it!

Yup, updated now. Quite cool, poker wasted some time on the way to work today.

Spent most of the weekend after the update trying to find away into fooling the Zune site that I was logging on from North America but it seems to stop any proxy servers trying to log on. Quite annoying, all this cool stuff that I want to use but can't.

Oh well, back to America in a month anyway so I will see what I can do when I am there.

Well I think you used to be able to use the Zune Marketplace back in the day by setting up a fake account, but now they've even removed the Marketplace from view here, so I doubt there's anything you can do unless you set up a static proxy or some gibberish.

OK so after some quick research, I dug up these two. Dunno if they work as I haven't tested them (might do tonight), but if you're not busy Glovner you can give it a go!

A) 1. Go to Control Panel
2. In the control panel, go to where it says " CLOCK, TIME AND REGION".
3. In the " CLOCK , TIME AND REGION" go to where it says "REGIONAL AND LANGUAGE OPTIONS".
4. After choosing the "Regional and Language Options" select - Location.
5. On Location, change it to United States.
By following these steps you will be able to purchase songs and have the zune marketplace.

B ) Go to Passport.com and register a new passport. Use any email address you want. When you're creating your profile, select your home country as the United States of America. Use any US address you want: if you have a sense of irony, use 1 Microsoft Way, Redmond, WA, 98052.
You now have a "clean" passport that can be used in the Zune Marketplace - but you need points to do that. And, not surprisingly, you can't purchase points with a non-US credit card. What you need are Xbox Live Point Cards that are sold in the US. Point cards purchased in other countries are geographically linked to that country and are not compatible with the Zune Marketplace. You have two choices at this point: head over to eBay and purchase point cards from a US-based seller (you may want to confirm there are US-based points). The nice thing here is that many sellers will just email you the point codes, meaning they don't care if you're in Poland or the UK. Or, use that friend in the USA again to buy you a points card.
Once you have the point card codes, head over to the Zune.net account management page and log in with your new US-based Passport account. There's a link for account management inside the Zune desktop software, but at the time of this writing it simply opened IE7 for me and didn't take me to the Zune.net site.
Click on Redeem Prepaid Code and enter in the Xbox Live Points code(s) you have. Those points will be added to your account.
Fire up the Zune desktop software, log in with your new US-based Passport account, and giggle like a school-girl as you witness your account fill with points ready for spending. You can use these points to purchase music or music videos from the Zune marketplace, and they'll download and play back on your Zune without any problem.
When you need more points, just repeat steps #2 through #4 again. If you're planning on buying a lot of music, you should probably purchase a few blocks of 4000 points (which cost around $60 USD at retail).
There's a bit of bad news, however: the Zune Pass account is linked to a credit card for repeat billings, and, you guessed it, they block all non-US credit credit billing addresses. So unless you have a great friend who's willing to have the Zune Pass billed to his credit card, and have you pay him back, there's no way I'm aware of to get a Zune Pass account. If and when the Zune officially launches in your home country, you'll be able to enjoy the bountiful plenty that is the Zune Pass.

I assume the second technique qorks for purchasing US XBLM content too.

I didn't make the video, but there is a way to make your own themes and gamerpics. Using themes is ok as its just on your own console. However gamerpics would get you a life ban LOL.... but I think with the new dashboard coming it will end using your own compiled themes, end the profile glitching from one account to another...

You put a current theme on your mem card,
transfer it to PC and edit it with a hex editor to replace the current PNG images with your own PNG images, then you rename the file and have it digitally signed with an xbox keypair.

But im OK at creating the themes, Im even good with a hex editor - but I can't sign files with the xbox keypair thing. Someone else I know does that bit...its extremely technical.

Yet again the rest of the world gets shafted.
We're already paying more money for less content (as are every other country- australia have nothing) and now when the super duper new dashboard comes in we wont have netflix or the videos and we wont have the premium games like 1v100 for weeks.
Our dashboard will certainly look nice and shiny outside of USA but itll be a shit downgraded version that we pay the same money for (again australians reportedly pay even more) and thats just what we're aware of now- It wouldnt surprise me if other things didnt happen outside of america, aside from the thousands upon thousands of films we wont see.
Why do we still pay the same and have so much less?
Is it really that hard to put a proper selection of films (not to mention all other things) on xboxs outside of the states?

I think we both are a bit distant to what we used to be like...and god knows where Zan went.... !!

I used to work from home 80% of the time last year up until Jan 2008 and now this year is 80% out of the home. I think xboxic was on every hour my laptop and/or PC was.

You work pretty late and a whole lot more than you used to...

The US is lucky, and I'm sure if the UK had a similar streaming/renting site as successful as Netflix, MS would have partnered with them.

We pay something silly like 5p a day for Xbox Live, and there's often deals to get Live cheaper if you hunt around. I pay £40 a year and that's absolutely fine by me. I get a solid online platform that makes it easy to play with friends. Go play a PS3 if you wanna stop paying, because as much as you moan, nothing will change.

youre very much correct- xbox live, as ive said before, is annually less than what id spend on a night out. its a good price, but to say the US is just lucky isnt entirely true either is it? If microsoft wanted to make a real effort to put more onto live in countries outside america, not just our own, it would be well within its power to do so.
to completely dismiss the idea that m$ could try harder is pretty defeatist, even though i think youre spot on in saying nothing will really change.
Its the best we can get at the moment and suppose all we can do is hope they find ways to bring more to other countries outside the US...

Problem 1: My console was sent the Update using it's Console ID number, my gamertag is UK JAY and I think they got it as UK Jason my old gamertag name before UK JAY was born...
Problem 2: The update is stored on the console, but all my gamertags are stored on a mem card. When the console update was done. I put my mem card in and that is when the security check update bit came in and locked me out. Apparently the mem card has it's own console id too !! It wasn't matched and I got locked out.

My Compensation
A one month redeem code to xbox live which I can't redeem until Nov 19th.
Xbox.com will send me another email within 48hrs to see if they can correct the issues.

I still can't connect to Live. Gonna give them a ring on Monday as thankfully this aint my fault !! When I put games in I still get - "There is an Update available for this game..." I press A to download update, it starts to update and then cuts out !

Apparently the update has been uploaded to torrent sites so people can download it at will. It means you won't be able to connect to Live until the 19th, but that's not so bad if you wanna try it out and have some single player games to play.

In fact I wonder if clearing the cache allows you back, or whether the console is noted and blocked? Might be worth a go.

Yeah gonna give it a try. The problem was changing my memory card after the first update and before the 2nd update. I didn't realise it would be done in two steps. I assumed when my console restarted that was it... put my memory card back in and it couldn't take the 2nd download. So for me the update is tied to my console and the 2nd bit which was some security thing tied to the ID of my memory card. To get into live you need both bits having the same ID...I transferred my gamertag back to HDD afterwards and still dont work...

Which makes me wonder how many fuck ups there will be when it goes live on 19th for people who use gamertags on memory cards but store everything else on the console HDD... (unless the ID security thing was done this way for the preview only and it dont matter after 19th)

Would the security checks still be in place when it goes Live for real? I was under the impression that they implemented that for now so that only those that were meant to have it on their system, had it. There's not normally security checks for the other dash updates.

LOL I had that thought and whilst you were writing I was editing my original post. Xbox Tech support had told me in their first reply that there are:

Individual Profile IDs, Individual Console ID's & Individual ID's for Memory Units and HDD's which get Identified by your Profile ID for storing information in the right place

PS3 ain't any better btw. Even tho they have a backup function in the XMB what you restore isn't what you backed up if you switched consoles. Some stuff simply gets "lost in transition" I guess :)

Yeah there's no hope for me I'm afraid until Nov 19th when I get to download it again, but I know now just to leave my main UK JAY gamertag on my HDD. I called MS today as they was open til 5pm. First thing I heard on their phone line was an automated message about fixes being made soon for those not able to connect to Live.

Each Game or Video on the marketplace has its own themed style pages.
Personal Pic via Live Cam is back, but only when signed in on Live.
Friends, its one big long row of avatars standing by icons and mini walls. Looks good and shows the game box of the game they are playing.

With the avatars you get to make gamerpics using a camera style options menu. You can move the faces, zoom in and out, quite good. Fun for a few minutes and then choose a background...

...and forgot to mention that the Themes for the NXE dashboard take away the kiddish feel. It comes with 360 theme, Day, Night & Spectrum. The new style themes also change how your friends avatar line up look. The day theme puts them all by shops, the night theme by restaurant style stuff...

This has changed slightly since the original NXE update 3 weeks ago (but only a little)...I wonder if the final version on 19th will be different again ??

Just downloaded one of the NXE 'Premium' themes which set you back 250 points. I chose Gears of War Hope Runs Deep Premium and basically the themes have been designed to make the images more visible around the NXE stuff and now on the friends line it adds Gears buildings and Vehicles behind my friends instead of the usual xbox related stuff...

Having looked at my USA JAY gamertag on this, Netflix is here from the start after a very small download.

Yes private chat with 8 people, but not video chat Im afraid. You can private chat with 8 people in Party mode and go from Game to game with all 8 also. Party groups you all together and keeps you all together and you can all chat together, but you need to unblock party mode in settings.

My reason for dislike is the way Microsoft feel the need to make the dashboard more child friendly, yes the 360 has games for kids, but the main market for the 360 are moderate to hardcore gamers, why change it for small children? its not like the current dash is hard to get around, everything is there.
There are other issues i have, but the closer it gets the more i warm to the whole NXE, except the whole kiddy friendly bollocks. I would go on, but i've just picked up, me and the 8th were having a starring match, but i just lost.

Yes did a check up on it and Microsoft mentioned this at E3 08, the potential is there for unlockables on avatars when you gain certain achievements. So no need for me to mention it on the feedback form...

I played a public Horde match last night, made it to wave 27, and had 152 kills with about 4-6 deaths (dont recall). I was the #1 guy on my team, we died, and that took about an hour and 15 min to get through.

Downloaded mine this morning before I came to work. Theres plenty of options for your character, although I was expecting more hats and shirts. I was browsing and im wondering if the Netflix thing is TRUE streaming movies or will they play like the inside xbox video from the previous dashboard...play, buffer, play, buffer. I got it this morning as well. Played around with it for about 20 minutes, I like what I saw. I have netflix but is didn't work for some reason. If your an existing customer the xobx gives you a code, so with that code your suppose to log in to your netflix account on your PC and activate it. Well, I tried several times, with several codes the xbox gave me and it kept telling me the code was wrong. I'll try again tonight, maybe there is a problem and they will figure it out in the next few days.

Today was first time I saw the Party mode as now everyone else has the NXE I could see how it functioned. It brings people who aren't on your friends list to your firends section and you see the whole of another friends party whether they are appear offline or not.

Put game in the drive, go to dashboard, my xbox and then on the game screen press 'Y' for game options and install to HDD

messing round with my update here, you can now choose to manually start your game disc every time you insert a new disc, don't know if this was in previous updates though, think the old dash used to have just the dashboard start-up option.

Also a 6 hr auto-shutdown, seems like a good idea too, again i think this is a new feature.

Manually starting when you insert a new disc is new but the auto-off feature has been around since the original Xbox.

I don't like how the cool dashboard effects caused by the vision cam look like garbage now but everything else looks and feels great so far. I had it freeze twice on me too tho, but after about 1 min, it continued where it left off.

I guess I've used my PS3 a lot more than my Xbox the past year, because for a while I stated to expect this behavior from my consoles. But then a few times recently I noticed the Xbox launched my game for me.

I think it is a parameter you can turn off / on in the PS3 setup too.

I like it. It allows me to prep the system before planting myself on the couch. I use TVersity (can go to your 360 or your PS3) to do a lot of sharing of audio / video, so starting my console does not necessarily mean I'll be playing a game yet. Pop in a disc, throw on some tunes... do the pregame routine... and then when im ready I can manually launch my game.

I love the feature.



edit: I got home at went to apply the update and my 360 turned on 3 infamous lights...

The point of it is for anyone who wants to install their game onto the hard drive before launching the game. Buy a new game, want to install it but having to quit out first would suck balls.

I was curious about this NXE so I loaded my HDD onto my roomates machine to d/l and putz around with it for a bit.

I'll admit, the layout is slicker, and navigating the menus seems a bit more streamlined. Themes are crap now. I don't know what they were saying about them being compatible, because I think I only have 2 or 3 that work properly (d/l freebies like GoW Emergence day, Bungie Day, Canada Day themes.....the FREE ONES PROVIDED BY MS do not work! wtf...anyways...).

But really, honestly and seriously, what the fuck MS? What's with the kiddie avatars? Is this their way of saying I'm actually too old to be gaming?

I do not like the avatars at all and really wish MS would've reconsidered this garbage. Just update the layout and functionality of the dash, or at the very least, give us the option of creating an avatar or not.

I don't know, I think I'm just bitter becauase it froze on me no less than 3 times in the first 10 mins of applying the update. I'd be mroe worried, but my own xbox is already fucked and this one wasn't mine.

Well I had the silly FFXI Playonline thing when I did the Beta, and an OXM UK with five unlockable Achievements, so I was happy to remove them. I just like displaying only the games I actually have Achievements for, I'm pretty anal about stuff like that.

Hit the guide button the controller, scroll left once or twice and you should see a heading of "Achievements". Hit it, then scroll down your list and whenever there's a game with 0 Gamerscore, the X button becomes active and you can remove them.

This has been mis-reported quite a lot. Sony hasn't actually restricted it. The deal is Netflix don't have an appropriate contract with Columbia Pictures to stream their content (to anything but a TV obviously). I can't see the restriction lasting long, Columbia Pictures would miss out on a lot of potential revenue otherwise (they have over 200 movies on the service apparently).

I'm not that impressed with this update.
I don't like the avatar thing, I'd rather switch it off.
All my themes look crap now, the dash covers most of them up.
I noticed new themes but also they are now more expensive.
There was claims that you would be able to do pretty much anything from the in-game dash, like view vids, and marketplace and stuff.
Nearly every option in this dash tells you need to quit game to use it so what is the point, you can only access this stuff from the main menu.

This new dash was supposed to be designed to work faster but I think the marketplace seems a hell of a lot slower and it's more difficult to find things.

The install to HDD seems pretty pointless, I haven't noticed any improvement in the speed of the games. Plus you need to have the disk in any way. What a waste of time. This is just a stupid gimick really.

I want to downgrade to the old dash now.

To be honest there isn't that many new features either.

We have Mii's, 8 way party chat, install to HDD and an option to stop the game auto loading when a disk is inserted, and thats about it.

That isn't really all that much, ok the party chat is good but why didn't they have it before.

I hate it, I like avatars though, but I hate spotlight, I hate community games, I hate just about everything except the new guide button thing.

The new party system makes up for everything in my mind. Also I love the look and the Avatars but it's sooo much harder to find marketplace shit now. The new guide button is sweet as hell and there are a few small additions that rock. I used to hate when I wanted to check an achievement or something and I hit the guide button just as someone has the nerve to sign in and it takes me to their fucking profile. Thank god that annoying shit's gone.

yes, but it now requires seemingly more effort to LAUNCH the damned thing. Old dash, you could lauch the game from ANY blade. New dash, you've got to cycle through Spotlight shit, Friends shit, Community shit.....small potatoes, but still!

One thing I'm quite happy about is now my 360 actually boots when I turn it on. If i turn my 360 on and I don't have my receiver set to the 360's input it just sits there... same idea as not having the "A/V" cable plugged in.

Actually, all you have to do to start a game "quickly" is to hit up on the control stick and hit A.
In the old dashboard, you had to hit down 3 times and hit A.

yeah, I think it was the first couple days and I was continually messing around and getting lost.

I actually think the guide button functionality is great. The more I play around, the more I like the guide button stuff. Quick Launch will sort my problems out.

But I still can't help feeling like a giant dork everytime I see a stupid avatar on my screen. I really think my only beef is with the avatars at this point.

I think they would be alright if you could perhaps turn off the visibility. They aren't really suitable on screen for the over 25's. I want to secretly enjoy dressing up my mini me...not openly display it !! Plus it wouldn't be too bad either if you could cover it up head to toe in body armour or something more masculine looking !!

I was under the impression that this new update was supposed to make everything run faster and smoother. Now it takes ages to look for anything on marketplace. If you want to download multiple items from each page you have to wait for each item to load up again after each one. The guide for me is a real pain to use. It used to run much quicker.
