Im not one to post new thread topics but I guess nobody else here is interested in this game so I will. I had Fable 2 pre-ordered and Fallout but when I figured out they were released within 1 week of each other I cancelled my pre-order for Fable and decided to just get Fallout. Ive been waiting for this since announced and should have my copy by lunch tomorrow. From all ive read the main quest is hours longer than Fable and that made the decision for me as I wanted a long story line with loads of replayability. For all whos interested in this game discuss and by 8pm tomorrow I will let you all know my initial thoughts if I can take a break long enough. :)

I am very interested in it actualy and shoulw have the collector's edition by thursday. :)
I like games that let you explore so this is definetly something that I will enjoy playing through. I still remember trying what I think was the 2nd game when I was younger and getting overwhelmed by the zombie like creatures... or it could be another game.
If you got time to drop a few lines on your experience when you play it then please do mate.

I wish I'd known more about this game. I always dismissed it as another "FPS" series that I had never played / didn't really need to get involved in. (I consider Killzone to be the same. Correct me if I'm wrong on that one too...)
Turns out it's Oblivion 2077. Who knew.
I wish I hadn't bought Fable 2 a week ago. I would've arranged the perfect scenario by letting a guy at work buy Fable 2 while I bought Fallout 3, but unfortunately we've both bought Fable 2 =/.
With Resistance 2 and Gears of War 2 next week, and the possibility that at any given hour I could go buy Little Big Planet... I doubt I play this game for a few weeks/months/ever. And that sucks. It's a shame such a great looking title snuck up on me.

It is more sarcastic than Oblivion though by the looks of some videos I watched so should prove some comeday moments. I can imagine my guy running away many times from those zombie like creatures if it is anything like when I played Oblivion.

I don't see why that would put you off the game, you never have to use it if you don't want to, its completely optional, so whats the problem?

Unless i'm forgetting some monumental understatement, thats by far the biggest understatement of the year.
Completely took the words out of my mouth. This one has been top of my radar for about 6 months!!
Quite alot of people have described the game as "Oblivion with guns", and to be perfectly honest that suits me to a tee. Oblivion was one of the first titles that I bought for the xbox 360 and to add a slightly less monumental understatement I was completely blown away by the sheer size of the game, the amount of missions and the longevity. If Fallout delivers the same or even more than Oblivion did then I'm most likely going to be found decomposed on my sofa with a smile permenantly glued to my face.
By the look of most of the reviews i've seen, this game will not disappoint. 1up has given it an A, & IGN's Review (http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/924/924165p1.html) was released a couple of hours ago. 9.6 !!!
Oh my god I can't wait any longer!!!!!!!

Mass Effect had something similar to that and I didn't really enjoy it that much. However from the reviews I've read, its been integrated really well and works! I don't think its going to distract to much, especially if the game rocks as much as they're saying it is.

Yeah if you read the US IGN review it says there, he claimed it would take up to 100 hours to completely cover all the game has to offer. The UK review claims 40-50 hours for the main story line. Either way the game is what you make it, when I played Oblivion it took me 80+ hours to complete with around 60-70% of the side missions, but I know for a fact theres another 20 hours left there for me to explore. I kinda gave up on it when i'd maxed out the achievements, being the whore that I am. I keep meaning to invest in the shivering isles but with so many other games out there at the moment I simply can't find the time.

Well I played quit a bit last night and I really enjoy this game so far. Ive leveled up to 5 cause it doesnt seem that hard to level up. The game also doesnt seem that hard but I have died once already. Well ive got a couple complaints about this..First its soo hard to find ammo for your guns and or money to buy ammo. I figured thats the way they made it being post nuclear war and all but its starting to piss me off. Another thing is money or caps..The only way I can tell to earn any is by doing quest BUT you cannot complete quest when you dont have any ammo!!!! Oh well, but the Fat Man Mini-Nuke gun is prolly the best gun Ive used yet.

There are very few games i know that i want when i first hear about them but this is one such game. I loved oblivion, and even the 1st teaser trailer in the broken bus made me want the game. And nothing I've read or seen has had negative things to say, about the game.
This game includes lots of features I love about games:
--Control over the enviroment (those of you who have heard about the city Megatron in the game know what I mean).
--A free roaming world (always a good thing).
--The option to play the game the way you want.
--Replay value (if Oblivions anything to go by, I will never finish this. There always seems to be one more quest that you can do).
Obviously the gameplay itself has to be right for all those features to be worth anything, but if they are i can imagine this being a really great game.
And just for the record Ross, you don't have to play with the VATS("the thing where you can seemingly stop time and aim your weapon to get precision moments or something."). You can play the full game as just an FPS if you want to.

This isn't exactly true. Literally, sure you CAN .... but doing so wastes ammo like there is no tomorrow. Using VATS isn't just a gimmick, it's actually required because it is much more ammo efficient.
Way too many folks perceive this game as a FPS with strong rpg elements and that's as far from the truth as it can get. It's not a FPS and you cannot play it like a FPS. Quite simply NOT. Get that into your collective heads. Fallout 3 is not a FPS ... not a FPS ... not a FPS ... not a FPS.
Unfortunately Bethesda is to blame here because their marketing efforts made it look like a FPS and while the press and the older folks who actually played the previous fallout games know very well what to expect the younger audience was completely misled into thinking this would be something more similar to Crysis, FarCry 2 or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. than say Oblivion. Many comments about the game can actually very easily be traced back to these expectations.
If you rush through it and stick to the main quest you will not only have a pretty hefty shortage of caps and ammo, you also miss out on a lot of great quests and stuff. There is a ton of humor hidden away whereever you go. But you have to wander off the given path and explore to be rewarded.

No kidding. Way too much games piling up waiting to be played. If you want a recommendation I'd say put off gow2 because it really isn't much diffrent from gow1. More of the same kinda.
Depending on preferences get Fallout 2 first and MC:LA after that or the other way around. Don't trust the mc:la reviews too much btw. There is lots of whining and crying about how hard the game is and how the rubberband AI sucks etc. That's a lot of BS right there. The game is a little more challenging than most but learning the city makes it much easier and it happens progressively as you play. The learning curve is actually excellent.
It's also not true that you cannot afford a single mistake in a race. You can win with a 10-15 seconds lead, you can catch up when you are a couple seconds back etc. The AI is actually pretty good until you run into a shitty bug where the AI simply isn't aware of your presence. Actually, shouldn't there be a thread for mc:la somewhere ? :)
Fallout will keep you busy for a very long time but it might become somewhat boring looking after a while because even tho the graphics look very nice .... it's a nuclear wasteland after all and there isn't much change in the overall scenery and general theme.

My impressions on Fallout 3 so far:
I've only clocked up around 4/5 hours play time as of yet, but fuck me, i love it! Its pretty much exactly what i expected (as close as it could have been anyway), So many things remind me of Oblivion, which could never be bad. Caps are kinda hard to come by, but play the game like oblivion (search everywhere, every box, every corpse) carry things of value, then go trade in a town, the only place i have to trade is Megaton at the moment but i intend on much more exploring today. But as long as you trade and search you can do okay for stimpacks/ ammo and such.
I really fucking love this so far...
Chris
November 1st, 2008, 17:47
Yes. Very oblivion I agree.
-The very beginining of this game has a 'vault' instead of a jail/sewage system that you have to make your way out of as training for the game.
-The wind/peripheral audio sounds MUCH like oblivion.
-The quests are structured like oblivion.
-Your 'pipboy' is exactly like the scroll or book or whatever you pull up in oblivion to look at stats or quests or maps. All the little menus in it are exactly like oblivion.
-The open world itself is exactly like oblivion's in the fact that the towns are all scattered around individually.
I know it's just Bethesda's style but jesus.
_Chris_
November 1st, 2008, 19:06
Oblivion did so well, and the fact fallout is based around guns and in the future/alternate timeline makes the game different enough while still being really similar to Oblivion.
Some of the things you mentioned arnt really important anyway, the pipboy being like the scroll thing, thats just a menu, who cares? and it works well and fits in the game.
the audio, its not bad, its very Oblivionesque, but you get used to it, and its kinda nostalgic.
The training at the start, its works well, and its an improved version of the prison tunnels, gives you more of the background story for your character.
the open world, thats the best part about it, thats what i was expecting from Fable II and thats why i was disappointed, Fallout is fucking HUGE, and thats why i know i will be playing this for a long time.

Fallout is huge, I'm staggered by the length of the missions. I completed the Wasteland Beginners Guide mission, it literally took me about 5 hours. I have to admit that i'm struggling a bit on the combat side, especially when i'm confronted by mercs with rocket launchers. Has anyone got any tips to suriviving against that sort of fire power?

Now that im half way through level 10 Im enjoying this game more. I wont talk about it so I dont spoil anything. But if any of you are looking for a good place to trade or sell things follow the river toward Rivet City. When you see the round museum building with the scaffolds around it swim across the river, thats only if you stay on side of the river that megaton, super mart is on. Once across you there will be some super mutants but no biggie then walk to Rivet City. All the merchants there have loads of caps if your selling things.

ok i've racked up a good 30hrs (i know its only been out about 100hrs but i had a free weekend), and i love this game. I would like to defend my point that you can go through the game without using vats. It's just a matter about knowing which weapons to use against each enemy (that includes saving ammo by using melee weapons against easier enemies such as radroachs). I admit it's much easier to use VATS. but i reckon it is possible to go through the game without usng vats.
While the game is not restrictd to FPS, I belive it is possible to play the game be a first person shooter, it's just the lure of VATS will stop almost evreyone from playing it like that.
anyway that's not important i just wanted to have my say about it.
I do think this game is the best in 2008 so far, and I'm willing to bet it'll be the best game at the end. The game is basiclly oblivion only they've took it into a new universe. The amount of control you get in the world is amazing. I'd wager that most of the people who've played the game have spent alot a time in megatron. I'v done about 5 or 6 questst there (maybe more) and spent a good many of my hours there and to think that if id have taken a diffrent route i wouldn't have spent more than an hour in the city

If memory serves me (which it usually doesn't but i think this time it might) Locust didn't go down from one head shot, and as far as we know, Locust are simply humans who have had WAY WAY WAYYYY too much exposure to imultion (SP?). which to be honest, is not too far off the mutants and such in Fallout

I don't think that was what was meant by the "play it like an FPS" statements, With an FPS (in comparisons to Fallout anyway), standard FPS games are MUCH more run and gun, where as in fallout you find youself avoiding trouble in large areas, sneaking round some people rather than just killing everything you see, i know if i killed every mutant/raider/whatever i saw i would run out of ammo in minutes.
Loving the flamer. Sniper rifle+bloody mess is so fucking jokes.
Seeing as i've been working and such, i've not clocked nowhere near the amount of hours i would like to have had by now (think i've done about 12/13 hours so far?) They went down with one shot to the head from sniper rifles and would explode if a shotgun blast hit them at close range. Dunno about a pistol.

True, but the same can be said for the sniper rifle in Fallout, one shot kill.
The sniper rifle was the only weapon in gears that would give you a one hit kill from a headshot (proper head shot, not counting shotgun, you can hit someone pretty much anywhere except their hands and feet and kill them with a shotty in gears)

Im a lvl 11 and when I encounter super mutants I just run as close to them as I can get and use the vats with a shotty and its one shot kills always. VATS and free aim operate under the same hit detection setup.
I.E. You could see a shot hit the enemy in the eye, but it won't do anything unless your skill for that weapon is beefed up through leveling and adding stats. Example, I'm an idiot whose choosen to level up Enegy Weapons. I'm almost assured of a kill in four shots to a Super Mutant from any distance withh my energy rifle, but the ammo and actual gun are so hard to come by that I end up using regular guns more often than not, and since my skill with small guns is low, I'm a really shitty shot with them.
Spent my entire last level on upgrading weapon skills. Of the 20 points I get/level up, 5 went to each Small Guns, Energy Guns, Melee and Big Guns, then I used the Big Gun perk (+15 to Big Guns). Now all my weapon skills are at least at a 45, with Big/Small and Energy at 50 each (except hand to hand).
Love this game, as I loved Oblivion.
Just wish there was more variety in the enemies.

Fallout should never EVER be compared to a FPS. Reviewers made this mistake with Mass Effect and they are doing it again with Fallout. Just because you view the world from a First Person perspective does not have this game a first person shooter.

and for the record, THIS is what is meant by open world. Fable was a world, but you could only get form place A to B by travelling on the roads and paths.
In Fallout (like Oblivion) you can look out over the horizon, tell yourself "Self, you're going to walk all the way over there" and get there however you want. Up the hill and through the dead trees, or just follow the river? Through the dead town, or around it to that burnt out farm house? Your call, as its a TRUE open world.

The towns folk ask you to help them defend themselves, you're given three options; Help repair the robots, teach them how to shoot or stay and defend the base. If anyone hasn't done this yet then DO NOT choose repair robots. Because the robots aren't there to be repaired.
And the bloody game keeps crashing on me too, I know i should save more but I still lost about 2 hours playtime last night. Bloody annoying.
Apart from the obvious flaws I'd say this will be game of the year with no doubt :)

The game froze on me twice yesterday within 10 minutes and it hadn't done it at all before that. Still love it to death though, especially with bloody mess.
Ivan Joidherpus
November 5th, 2008, 20:13
yup, it'll freeze from time to time.
Save often. Freezes are bad, but nothing is worse than spening over an hour doing a quest, reach SOOOO close to the end, only to get blown up by a derelict car on the road. Hardcore lameness.
oh, and as an FYI, the level is capped at 20.
_Chris_
November 6th, 2008, 03:57
So you can only pick one level 20 perk?! Why cap levels so low? One thing i loved about Oblivion was the fact i could spend a LOT of time just training my character, now it sounds like i can get to the top level just by finishing the game... First disappointment so far... :(
-_-Foster-_-
November 6th, 2008, 07:45
i just finished it and i got to say yet again im not impressed i think they have took a step down when you think of oblivion its just all a bit to dull.
yet again just like fable the end takes the rancid piss out of you and your hard work to level up and get all the best weapons and armour.
You cant do what you really want to do which takes the monkey for example i sat in a nuke filled lake for fucking ten minutes get all the rad poisoning hoping to be a some flesh eating psycho with one big arm and telekinesis but no i got sick nothing more and had to pay my hard earned caps getting some treatment, although talk to any one in the game that looks a bit gritty and they basically did the same.......... piss take.
The gun that you get off the slavers is shit and don't do what they say it does. (i know not really a big point it just pissed me off)
7/10 at a push they should just work on oblivion 2 and save peoples time and money.

re: Level 20 cap
Not just one perk, but once you use your skill points you won't even collect XP for quests/enemies/anything.
re: ending
I thought I read that this game has something close to 200 different ending scenarios. They can't all be terrible.

Read me chris (http://kotaku.com/371657/fallout-3-has-over-200-endings)
actually, you could just hold the cursor over the link and read the URL.
I think that says it all.
Still, 200+ ????
overkill, don't you think?

This game has me hooked...big time. After wandering aimless doing a bit of everything, but questings, I have returned to the cities and started to take on quests and discovered that most of them I already partially or mostly completed during my travels.

OXM: Have the number of endings been finalized…..how’s that coming along?
Todd Howard: Being that we are Bethesda…everything gets a bit big. So as of last week we’re over 200 endings. That is not an exaggeration, but it deserves some description. 200 endings…that’s a lot. So originally when we started, we had various iterations of the ending. The ending is kind of cinematic, that’s dynamic based on the things you’ve done.
When we started, it was kind of fuzzy, it was like “well there’s like 9 maybe 12″ and we started adding things to it. So if you had done this or not this, you’d get this other tweak to the ending. And we kept doing that. And you know even just two weeks ago someone had this idea, “Oh we should add this idea to the ending” (sorry I’m not going to spoil what that is). And I said, “oh that’s a genius idea, we have to do that.” But then it became, “oh, but there’s four versions of that.” So i was like, “okay there’s like four different versions of that part,” and that multiplies by, at the time we were at about 60 endings…so now there’s four versions of that, so now there are around 240 versions.”
The games on paper when we get started…they’re alot smaller, and then as we go they get bigger…we can’t stop ourselves. We’re have tons of people with good ideas here, and if they’re good and fit the tone, we’re going to try to jam as much into the game as possible. Fallout is probably twice the size of what we originally had on paper…it’s pretty big, so that’s what’s happened with the endings.
So some of that stuff is the big things of what you do very late in the game, some of those are things like your karma — how you’ve lived your life from the beginning of the game — you get certain scenes based on your karma. But we kind of like the ending as much as like the game itself at the beginning is you tailoring your character and then you play throughout this game, and unlike Elder Scrolls, where it’s a game where you can keep playing, Fallout 3 has a definite ending. So we wanted to go to efforts to make sure that the actual ending you get when you finish and get the ending, and make that ending reflect and make it individual to the user’s experience. We’ve definitely gone a little overboard.
So yeah. "200 Endings" means that if your karma is really good you get some extra dialogue line here as one ending. Another line for different karma and another 'ending' and so on. It's also different based on who you killed and so forth. The 200 different endings buzzphrase makes it sound like there's 200 different cinematic endings (To me at least.) when really it's like 8 different endings with 9 or so different dialogue lines within each of those. So I guess that qualifies as 200 'endings'.

permutations and combinations FTW!!!
My roommate finished it last night, and they are 10000% correct when saying the ending, no matter which you see, will be definative. No chance to continue playing, you need to start a new character.
I guess the level cap at 20 makes a bit more sense now. Still.....a cap is lame.

November 10th, 2008, 11:09
Yeah I "accidentally" beat it yesterday. If anyone wants to literally complete it before ending the game then don't start the "taking it back" mission. I didn't realise it would all finish so soon. So I've reloaded my game half way through the final mission so I can continue to play but now i've got massively over dramatic music in the background that won't go away.

Fallout 3 is now tied with Too Human as my second most played game on the Xbox 360 console. I have played both for 25 days (according to my Xbox's Blog). The most played game you ask...why that would be Crackdown which I have played a total of 32 days.
Fallout 3 will surely break this record as there is plenty of DLC coming soon.

I recently bought too but there's so many games out that I haven't really had a chance to get into it. I'm going to start a new file when I get back to it tho because I went the "good" route for the sake of achievements but i'd rather be bad. I'm not letting achievements ruin the enjoyment of such a large scale game.

I ignored Fallout initially, too many other good games were out.
I GameFly'ed it last week... and am loving the hell out of it.
1. it IS a FPS, to whoever said it shouldn't be counted as such. When I want to play FPS style, w/o VATS, I can and do. When I want to play Final Fantasy RPG style, I 'pause' the game w/ Vats and attack a little more thought out...
2. It is better than Oblivion, from what I've played. I did not do half of the things possible in Oblivion though. I did the Mage quest, 3/4 the fighter quest, and then all my possessions disappeared from my drawer in the Mage tower so I quit the game. Oblivion to me was a series of pointless caves that looked identical.
3. I have for the most part ignored the main storyline, not because people have said it sucks or is too short (i didn't know any of that til right now), but because to me, the storyline for the game... was I'm a dude, who just emerged into capitol wasteland... live. and conquer. And I'm loving that... I've slowly built my house up to have all the amenities, I've worked myself into having quite an arsenal at my disposal... and I'm very strong now.
I just read that the level cap is 20? That is horrible. At least that puts an end in sight for this game for me. I know how I am. I won't see as much 'reason' to play if i'm not 'gaining' anything... (It's not like Gears Horde mode, which challenges me every time).
I find the area around the GNR building I've been trying to get to incredibly annoying to navigate. I assume this is where the bomb dropped or something, but it's a pain in the ass. This game is more 'sandbox' than any I've played before... and it's mind blowing at first, but once you get used to it you start seeing the limitations and are annoyed by them. Why can't I climb this wall, why can't I kidnap this dog named Four Score and use him as a companion, why can't i have one of those yao griz or whatnots like the traveling salesmen have, why can't I force two people to fight each other to the death in order to join my team. Tryouts :).
Awesome game. but this thread is ruinin my enjoyment cuz I know the end is nigh, and is not as enjoyable as the journey :(.

I'm so glad the PS3 broke me of this horrible habit.
I have no idea what the achievements are for Fallout 3, never looked. Every time I get one I'm sorta shocked like, there was an achievement for that small non storyline quest?
I like that the achievements for this game will show how i randomly decided to walk through the world. This, Mass Effect, etc, games that expect you to play through 4 times over without bearing the name Resident Evil... make me laugh :).

I beat the game during my new years and christmas vac but I did save the game before the final mission. And I have reached lvl 20 to but instead of doing the quest I basically went on scavenger hunts to get ammo, guns and sold them for caps and loaded up on stimpacks. Apperantly the patch will fix glitches or something but the lvl cap wont be increased till march with the third dlc that actually picks up the game from the ending. The game is still loads of fun even though im just wondering around till the lvl cap increases.

Fallout 3's DLC is looking very attractive at the moment and i think i will be purchasing all of it that has been announced to date. Also the 1st fallout 3 dlc will be out on the 27th, for those that don't know.

Fallout is amazing, but i think oblivion is better. Fallout's the better gameplay wise, but oblivion had all these pointless little sidequests and stories, while evreything in fallout seems was a main quest or a big mission. while that's not a complaint, because i love fallout, it did seem to me that oblivion had abit more substance and charcter. little quests such as the one where you go into the painting, the one with the two twins in two diffrent cities and of course all the guilds.those made that game for me. Fallout just dosn't have that.
and yeah fallout is abit hard at the start, rabid, but it's great when u get higher up. gets abit boring when u reach the level cap though. I'd advice not to use any perks like "here and now" which skip levels, because to me thats just a loss of gameplay.
