Buying a Router

My old Router just kicked the bucket, short of just grabbing the best router on sale this week I was wondering if you had any input. I am trying to stay in the $40-$90 price range.

some wrt54G(s) (read: upto V4) are worth its weight in gold , the latest revisions (5.0 and 5.1) are using a new system, this means you cant flash any cool 3rd party firmware in it

I've never needed to flash third party stuff in there, the thing works great out of the box while I have very bad experiences with products of Asus, Edimax, Sweex and SMC.

Pity if they removed the option though, but it's certainly not a reason not to buy it :)

The thing is with those linksys routers, is that the OS used was linux, up until v5

After V5 they started to use vxWorx, which is some closed source crapola embedded OS. I also believe they put in less ram (4mb vs 16 or something) but i'm not sure about that.

vxWorks is indeed embedded, and is used in professional Cisco and Juniper networking hardware as well. As such I wouldn't call it crapola, and considering Linksys is a Cisco-owned brand not really a surprising move. Decreasing the RAM is also quite probable, vxWorks is a lot friendlier on RAM than Linux could ever be as it's embedded. All it has to do is store some routing tables and a TCP-stack anyway.

I prefer the Linksys BEFSR41 over the dual model. I have had trouble with them, while the Linksys BEFSR41 has always been rock solid. Wired > Wireless for me as far as gaming is concerned. You can get it at walmart pretty cheap.

I have been using a D-link DI-604 since the inception of XBOX live and never once had a problem, complication or anything of the sort.

I will swear buy This little router(maybe not others) till the day i die..AWESOME and only about 40-50 right now!

I use a brandless €15,- 54Mbit wifi router without any problems. It doesn't have a big range though, my internet dissapears every now and then outside so i'll get a linksys thingie as well.
