hello guys, i have always ask myself this question: How do they determine the ping(connection quality) for xbox live games like call of duty 4 or world at war in which they have connection indicators with one red bar, 2 yellow bars, 3 light green bars and 4 green bars.
What i mean is, is there a equation or formula that determines your number of bars? Example, like for 3 bars, your ping should be 50-70 4 bars , less than 50 ms of ping and so on.
Hope some of you guys have some info on this and can elighten me, thanx in advance

What it is... it determines how well you can connect to other players based on your connection quality. The game finds a host player and then connects others to him; when you see players with a high bar it means they are well connected to the host, those with a low bar have a not so great connection.
Games usually auto-find the best host who can accommodate all players at that given time in the searching for a game bit...

yes , i know that, but i mean what qualifies someone to have 3 bars, 4 bars, etc....? like what is defined as a connection to have 3 bars(ie. 70ms or some other number)

I can tell you that Microsoft has set the ping to automatically boot out anyone with a ping higher than 30ms which is due to people playing on xbox live for free without subscription using the xlink kai method which tricks the console into thinking it's playing on Live... so my guess is 30ms max for everyone??

That's the first I've ever heard of anything like that. I'm not saying I'm doubting you....but I'm just shocked that something like that exists. I know I shouldn't be shocked but I am....lol. People will literally do ANYTHING to save a couple dollars....or to screw Microsoft.

Yeah it's kinda stupid, I can't see though how or if something like that could link to microsoft, I think you could only play against people also using that thing and your friends list can only consist of people using it... I don't think it links up to play with and against people over live.
I've currently been paying something between £20 - £30 a year which a very small price to pay for Live I think and to play online with an almost faultless connection against loads of people. To use that program to save yourself a small amount of money is really sad...

the 30ms thing your talking about is only relevant to local lan play modes. Basically you could use a program (such as xlink), that would trick your xbox (or other supported consoles) into thinking that you were on the same LAN as other people you were in a room with on the program.
I don't think MS would make it public information as to how the bars line up with the ping, but i guess anything under 100 is the 4 green bars.

Oh you mean they'll add a "pay $10 now to not get kicked" buttons to games?

that prob depends on how bad the global recession becomes...but it wouldn't surprise me if we had to pay supplements for better connections! Give it time LOL :)
