If you check the Recent Comments on the news pages, there's some bot called "<random country> hotels" that's putting in loads of random spam trackbacks. Not sure if you log IPs for these, but you might want to block the IP/range before it gets too troublesome

Yeah somebody mentioned our URL on spammersinternational.com forums or something, we've been getting continuous runs for a few days now. Consider it solved, thanks for reporting :)

I've already blocked a bunch of IP-ranges today, but if this continues we'll probably be having more severe anti-spam measures soon :( And I don't want to hide comments behind a login.

Just found this on digg.com thought it might help

http://www.spamcannibal.org/cannibal.cgi

it rerouts small packetts to the spam server, over and over, there by slowing or killing the spam server.

Yeah well I'm not at war with the spammers, they're usually just stupid guys unable to protect their system. Gives me all the more work to do though, just caught another spam run :(

Bitches kept spamming with different runs every few hours, so just added some *HARD* anti-spam measures.

spammers in the wiki get also more irritating every day. Most of them is already stopped but we keep working to block their spam.

When the frontpage remains spam-free now, I can have a look at protecting the Wiki similarly.

Emily.

So now I am not you're hero anymore? I mean, so what we had the other night is just gone to waste, now? Okay, I see, you used me. God I wish I weren't so extremely attractive. God you women are so selfish, you use us men like we are just fresh meat. You have broken my heart.

I hope you're happy!

You and i have been finished for quite some time. Our rendevous the other night was a one night ONLY deal, you knew that "going in" to the deal :) I used you, so be it, but it was pretty damn hot, no?

I heart you anyway :*

but last night some peeps complained they couldnt post as their post was identified as spamWho did and why didn't I hear about it despite the "please contact the site admins if this is not correct" line in that message?

It should only be possible to get that message if you leave an article page open for 12 hours before typing a comment.

Curry

Or they could be getting another message actually: we've always blocked comments from open and insecure proxies. When in doubt about that, visit this page: http://www.ipcraft.com/checkmyhost

Experimenting with some different ways of advertising. And erm I'm first to listen to the users as far as advertising is concerned (I'm not blocking tuns of SmileyCentral and well-paying popups and real spam ads because I hate income) but aren't you a tiny bit overreacting to exactly 2 dark red words on the whole frontpage?

as long as advertising is restricted to actual, reputable ads, i'm fine with it, i know websites cost money to run.

Thanks, I do my best to keep everything balanced :)

I am trying to maintain the same standard here that I myself uphold when I am visiting other sites. Functional advertising, because like you say we simply need to have some sort of return for providing our services. No popups, no popunders, no excessive animation or epileptic seizure inducing stuff, no spyware. I am consciously denying us that income (especially popups pay well actually) because I firmly believe they scare more users away than it compensates for the service. Compare us to any other news site out there and I'm sure you'll find we are pretty damn clean.

If we happen to be running a campaign that irritates people, be sure to let me know (I need the URL it leads to) and I will gladly block it if I agree it is inappropriate for the site. Again, I rather keep the user than the dollars.

When I looked yesterday there were like 7 ads in the newspost for the new artist of the month. Btw, I wasn't overreacting but 'fucking the ants' a bit. That's why there was a smiley at the end. ;)
I don't have any probs with those ads actually, but I saw a funny one just a few minutes ago. Your name was an advertisment for 'Curry Spices' :o

I was talking to Messiah yesterday and I said I saw all kinds of links in the wiki, thinking he accidentlly copy pasted something wrong in there. But he said he didn't see anything so I started Spybot to clean my PC \o/. Turned it was this new adthingie all along :(

That's why there was a smiley at the end. ;) Yeah well I'm kinda hyper on the advertising just because I want to keep it acceptable to everyone :P And the first pageviews are "heavier" filled than subsequent ones, but I should be able to tune that as need requires :)
