View Full Version : How about a Shout box for the Forum ?

Hello
I've seen several other forums using the same software as this one
and they have introduced the use of a shout box on the main forum
page. This is nothing more than a short of flash-like Public chat room
The shout box is cleared on each new day.
I think it would be a good idea especially for short messages and questions
that do not really need to be started as a whole new thread
For example : "Hello mates, does anyone care for a Team Elimination match on GRAW? right now? "
Thanks for considering.
P VALSAM.

We had that once, but that didn't work out so well since everybody started spamming and stuff :P. This could be an option in the future when you're logged in or something though.

How about you go to http://live.xbox.com/en-US/profile/Friends.aspx and check the "Total Friends" figure in the top-left ;) :P

I bribed the proxy blocker dudes :P But seriously, regrettably it's only a matter of time before they also block us :(
About the shoutbox, I'll have a look :)

Hrmpf there is an AJAX shoutbox available indeed for vBulletin, but it's not supported and staff recently fixed some security issues in it (so it's probably still unsafe considering it's not supported) and they added this remark:
Please note that this only fixes the html injection issues. I do not use this hack on my own forum (although I've tested this on a client's board) so I will not be fixing the server load issues. I suggest you do not install this hack if you can't deal with the extra server load, as it's rather intensive. Sorry, we have a lot of capacity in general but are very 'peak-sensitive' and don't want the shoutbox to kill our whole site when we're cited on a few popular sites at once :(

this site is one of the only ones not blocked, and they have blocked all the web translator/proxy server loopholes (or most of them anyway). and the computer tech at my school is a dick, you couldnt bribe him to not do his all-important job. probably the most power hungry technician you will ever meet.

heh what about remote desktop to your home computer (default in windows xp pro available) ;-). With that you open the website from your home computer.

If you have Windows XP Professional, go to My Computer -> Properties, tab Remote, and check "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer".
From work, go to Start Menu -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop Connection, and enter your home IP (check http://www.ipcraft.com/checkmyhost to find your own IP or hostname). If that doesn't work they were smart enough to block port TCP/3389 as well ;)

And don't forget you can't connect if your user account doesn't have a password. :P

Do I need a password for both? I have a User name and password for work, but not the house.
But I’m pretty sure considering this is a Federal Hospital that I can’t log in but I will most certainly try...
Thanks guys, as my gf daughter would say "You’re so smart!!"

You need one at home, just go to your control panel --> user accounts.

then change somewhere a register setting to put it on port 80, no way they will block that :P
