View Full Version : Texas Hold 'm Poker

Curry

It's been fun on Marketplace today but we didn't get the ultimate ultimate ULTIMATE prize in the end to silence ALL whiners: Texas Hold 'm Poker was announced under Recent Additions on this page (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/livearcadexbox360/default.htm), implying another release today, but if you look at the page now it's been ripped from there so brutally that they even were satisfied with only having 3 games on that row, screwing up the layout :P

So well, we nearly wrote a newspost about it, but like Dell's low price it's been corrected pretty damn fast. Guess I shouldn't have told Cesar about it ;) Anyway, Poker ought to be out soon if it apparently nearly made release today :)

where's the free poker

What people don't realise is, it's bound to be rubbish, particularly if it's free... And in terms of the slickness of the interface, I'm guessing it's going to be more Hardwood Hearts than Uno.

And if everybody under the sun is going to be downloading this one and jumping online, it's going to be impossible to find a good game. Anyone who plays a lot of (PC) online freerolls will know that they're absolute crapshoots; because there's no money in it, people just whack all their chips in with rubbish all the time, because they've nothing to lose.

A decent ranking/leaderboard system would solve that, but again we're talking about a free game, I can't see them having put too much effort into that. The forthcoming World Series Of Poker retail game should hopefully be much better.

Actually I thought Poker was also done by Carbonated, same team as UNO. And the game is not free, it's just heavily sponsored :)

So Studley, you say we should bet with Microsoft points?

Studley
July 1st, 2006, 13:09
I'd be up for that :D

Unrealistic in the near future though, I can see people being in uproar if suddenly there's a console game that lets you gamble real money (regardless of the fact that the PC has been doing it for years).

At the very least, you could do it with Achievements incentives; i.e. you have a "virtual bankroll" of, say, $1000. And the Achivements could be linked to how much money you've earned - "Get bankroll to $5000: 10pts, Get bankroll to $20000: 25pts, Get bankroll to $50000: 50pts" - that sort of thing. So at least the Gamerpoint whores will take it seriously.

Even on the "free" one though, I'm looking forward to a few private games with my friendlist (assuming you can create private games), that could still be good fun. And isn't this game going to have webcam integration like Uno?

Continuing my pillaging of EVERYTHING from this month's Official Xbox Magazine... they have a Hold-Em review :o

And the first screenshot I've ever seen. It looks AWFUL, really cluttered. They reckon it's going to be 400pts, but they're probably guessing (they've got 400pts for Street Fighter too).

They gave it 5/10, but that's better than Frogger (3), Galaga (4) and Pac-Man (4) got. Uno got 7, Street Fighter got 9.

Newsflash:Texas Hold 'em Free in Arcade for First 48 Hours

Microsoft isn't bluffing: Log on to Xbox Live® within the first 48 hours after launch and download Texas Hold 'em completely free of charge! This full-featured poker title for Xbox Live Arcade on Xbox 360™ will launch on Wednesday, August 23, at 0800 GMT (1:00 A.M. Pacific Time).

For 48 hours only—through 0800 GMT (1:00 A.M. Pacific Time) Friday, August 25—as a special limited-time only promotion, all Xbox Live Gold and Silver members can download the game at no charge.Starting at 0801 GMT (1:01 A.M. Pacific Time) Friday, August 25, Texas Hold 'em will be available for 800 Microsoft Points.

http://www.xbox.com/NR/rdonlyres/B404C09A-82E5-4681-8B45-CAC75EAAF4C7/0/ilmthe360maingame.jpg

Not only is Texas Hold 'em free to all gamers, it comes equipped with features that can only be found on Xbox 360. Designed to simulate the risk/reward of real poker gameplay, keep gamers honest, and discourage opponents from betting too recklessly, Texas Hold 'em has an innovative new feature called "Persistent Bankroll."

Your virtual bankroll is tied to your gamertag and keeps a running tally of your chip count. If you lose all of your chips in a poker game, you'll have to play lower stakes buy-in games to make back your stack and earn your way to the big tables.

http://www.xbox.com/NR/rdonlyres/D9DB7EE5-894D-4A05-B4F9-7E1B9839A70D/0/ilmthe360scenarios.jpg

Texas Hold 'em also offers multiplayer support for up to eight gamers, three modes of gameplay (Standard Games, Scenarios, and Tournaments), achievements, extensive online leaderboards and statistics, and high-definition graphics. Enjoy poker night every night with friends, family members, and gamers around the world (please note that this title may not be available in some countries).

Sounds like Texas Hold Em to me, that's certainly the most popular televised form of poker:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_hold_'em

If you know a different version, it's probably a Stud version, that's the "old school" game which was most popular before poker gained commercial appeal. That's the one where you can swap cards etc if you want to.

And yes... Texas Hold Em is the poker variation which features in the XBLA game "Texas Hold Em" ;)

To summarise though:

Each player dealt two cards
Round of betting
Dealer deals three "community" cards, players combine these three with the two in their hand to make a five-card hand
Round of betting
Dealer deals a fourth card. So the player now has 6 cards to choose from, with which to make their best five-card hand
Round of betting
Dealer deals a fifth card, again players make their best possible 5 cards from 7
Round of betting
And then showdown - whoever has the best hand, wins.

Of course there is no showdown if players fold their cards, so you can win with a bluff if you outbet your opponents.

nope (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draw_poker)

Draw poker
Players each receive five — as in five-card draw — or more cards, all of which are hidden. They can then replace one or more of these cards a certain number of times.

That's the game I was talking about.. I know I said buy card, but I meant exchange. (was doing multiple things at a time yesterday in the office) :+

Questions for someone who's downloaded it:

Online, are there Ranked (bankroll) and Non-Ranked (anybody) matches? Someone's bitching in the comments that everyone just keeps going all-in, I'm hoping it's because they're playing non-ranked games, I'll hate it if everyone plays that badly.

And just to check, can you have Private games (e.g. for our game tonight)? And how many players is it limited to, just a single table?

Wouldn't worry, if everyone goes all in all the time then they will always be the first to be all out all the time.

Best poker game ever Texas Hold 'em. I'm playing a real tournement next week, real money mwwaaa ha ha ha.

Not necessarily, same problem as (PC) internet freerolls. If you have five people go all-in on the first hand, sure four of them will be eliminated but the fifth will have 5x the chips of everyone else, and they're almost a sure-fire top finisher. And on the 360, where there's no real (financial) loss if you lose, what's to stop people doing this so that they win about 1 in 5 games?

(Personally - I have the skill to win more than 1 in 5 games by playing correctly - but I'm talking about Joe Public)

The richer you get, the less chance you'll encounter All In Whores.

Maybe you watched different channels ;)

I don't recognise it either, it looks like an eighties version of Saved By The Bell.

That would have been the single greatest "Saved by the bell" ever.

They almost had their own pet retard with that silly Screech cunt though, should have called it "Saved by the bellend".

I can't believe it... the music in Poker is actually WORSE than Uno's mexican elevator music :D

--------------------------------

The 1st Xboxic Poker Tourney:

1st: kobejonez (aka 4 Brains Are Better Than 1): $2000
2nd: Studley (aka Gimme A Card Higher Than A Nine): $1200
3rd: etalien (aka The Dutch Destroyer): $800

It'll probably be easier to organise another game a bit longer after launch, because everyone I was sending game invites to were already playing other matches.

Never played or understood Poker, downloaded this and.... I think it's fab. The first play thru I didn't really understand what I was doing and blew my £2000 bankroll. Then I read thru the rules again and it all clicked into place! I'm doing much better now! I can see why some people get addicted lol!

Wait until you get the bug and play it for real money. Peoples attitudes to betting change quite dramitically when they actually have something to lose.

Too damn right, when some fool flukes out against me when I'm second in chips with five players remaining in a tournament with a $5000 first prize, I start swearing even more than you :X

Me: Ad Qs
Chip Leader: Ah Jc

Both of us go all-in.

Flop: 8s Tc 8d

So to knock me out, he needs a jack from one of the last two cards.

Turn: 7s

That's given him one extra chance - if he finds a nine, he's made a miracle 7-8-9-10-J straight

River: 9h

You do NOT want to know my reaction when that came off. I've too much respect for you.

Still a nice $867 for sixth place, but goddamit I should've got the $5k.

So addicted to this game....but totally lost a butt load of money lol I kept pulling pairs right off the bat and trying to make up the difference, It was killing me because someone else would pull a higher pair everytime and I wouldn't catch a thing on the table cards.

The_Glovner
August 24th, 2006, 17:39
Pairs ain't a great hand, Even a pair of aces can be easily beaten.

Start betting harder when you get up to two pair or three of a kind. But remember to use your time to look at the cards on the table and work out the other possible hands people could have, if nobody can have a better hand than you then you have the "nuts" my friend and you can either go all-in and hope they don't bottle it or limp in to see if you can get them interested and commit enough money to the pot so that when you do go all-in they find it harder to leave the pot as they have already staked so much.

And thats poker in a nutshell.

I may go back and alter the grammar in that previous post when I get a minute, as it is quite bad.

O/T: My 360 camera arrived this morning 8) I'm at work at the moment, but I'm still trying to decide whether to sell it on eBay for a huge profit, or keep it for myself and be the envy of my friends list 8)

And, of course, I'll be bombared with "omgz send me a pic!"

Haha yeah I'm probably going to keep it. Mainly because it comes with one month's free subscription to Live, and my subscription is due for renewal but I can't work out how to change my payment card :-( It keeps saying it's invalid when it's clearly not.

I'm out tonight at the best festival ever invented (http://www.beer-fest.org.uk/index.php?module=info), so I'll probably be too wasted to do anything about it when I get home, I'll sort you out with something tomorrow

Oh and thanks for the advice glovner. I'm made up the money I lost and then some. It seems the game gives better hands off of crap cards to me, but it just took a bit of adjustment to the game play.
