Oh man! Just started Dead Rising and didn't start playing right away. Did you know there's a kickass movie if you wait a couple of minutes at the start screen? A movie about a mother and her child (trying to) escaping the city in a car? That's so sweet! Check it out if you didn't already._o_

I just sat through Dawn of the Dead 2004, really liked the first scene with the propane tank and the real ending that's shown during the credits.
40,750 zombies down, level 40. 8)
Edit: Genocider achievement unlocked! \o/

The first battle against Carlito ; one shot and he was down.
Adam the clown: 4 shots and down went the clown
GunShop owner: 2 shots or so and byebye gunshop owner.
It has 300 shots and it respawns in the security rooms when you run out of shots. :)

I'm stuck (quite near to the start, case 2-1) but don't want to read too far through the thread... When you and Brad have the second fight with Carlito (he has a sniper rifle), any tactics? Even if my accuracy is 100% perfect, each of his shots still takes 2 bits of my health, so I can only take about three hits (and I can't carry much food because I'm tooled up with guns...)

I also had some troubles getting past him. This is what I did. He is running on the right side of the second floor so I stayed on the left side. Armed me a gun and hid behind the pillars so I could shoot him and he couldn't shoot me. Takes some practice to dodge all his bullets but you'll manage :) My gun went empty on me so I had to deliver the final blow with some other weapon. Only thing on me was the toy lightsword, but it did the trick :D
I myself just quit.. again.. after being caught by the yellow bastards... again... leaving me in my boxer.. again... damn, I can't seem to break out after they've catched me.. Ah well, next time I'll try not to get caught.. again.. asswipes... :(

Use the real Mega Man buster, he goes down with 3 shots or so.
you'll have to kill 53,594 zombies and then wait for the helicopter to arrive to get it though >:)

What's the most efficient way to get tons of kills anyway?

You can choose how to level up?? I didn't know it was possible.. How?? Or is it a RTFM thing?
Nino
September 11th, 2006, 13:59
No Curry's talking about the fact that the game randomly decides which ability you get with a level up. It gives you either a throw upgrade, a health upgrade, a stock upgrade or a skill. I didn't bother exploiting it, you're wasting time you could spend on actually levelling :P.
And the best way of getting that sick amount of kills is driving cars through the tunnels.
Curry

Save right before leveling and go level, and reload if you didn't like the upgrade :) Especially in the beginning, where a simple restart of the game gets you 3 levels already if you do it right, it's worth aiming for the health, speed and stock upgrades in particular.

Get the katana en go to the front door of the mall. There's a bicycle in the sports shop. Take it and ride it up the stairs. Suprise him from the back and cut him in half.. That's one way to do it.. Or shoot him from behind a pillar.

The fact that in an hours worth of gameplay I've spent more time watching loading screens than actually playing the game. After I beat the Spanish fella, it went like this:
Loads cutscence, loads gameplay, walk a few secs, loads next part of level, take a few more steps, loads next part indoors, theres a closed shutter, I walk towards it literally two steps, it loads a cutscene to show the shutter opening..., loads gameplay, a small walk across the corridoor, it has to load another cutscene.
Haven't touched it since. From what i've been able to play is fun, but theres no flow to the game at all. Feels really disjointed. Shame cause I could really enjoy it gameplay wise. Big anti-climax personally.

Too bad you stopped at that point cause it was one of the last times the game has to load and load and load to get the story going. After that there is more open gameplay and cutscenes only happen when a case is activated or something special happens. I was a bit irritated myself when all the loading was happening in the begining, but it all disappeared when the game really kicked in after you meet the old man.. Besides, I really like the story and how it developes so I'll gladly wait for a stunning cutscene :)

Don't worry I'll be giving it more time, it's just put me off it a little at the moment and taken some of the shine off.
Cutscenes I don't mind, its the constant loading to get to it which is making me want to kill all the survivors and myself. The story, setting, the gameplay itself are all superb, not a complaint from that aspect.

So if a game that flows properly had loading screens, it would be better, when you love a game that doesn't flow properly because of said loading screens?
Brilliant logic that Nino. Bravo.
I don't see why Nino is taking it as if it has to be Saints Row OR Dead Rising stance. Both are freely available, you aren't restricted to just owning one you know.
I have both and like both. Sorry that seems to be a crime...
Fact is; the majority of people who have played Saints Row liked it. Nino didn't and has found himself feeling like he's called it incorrectly, which he obviously doesn't like.
Shame, because like everyone else he could be having a great deal of fun on Saints Row, but he's being too blinkered to realise it.

If you didn't overwrite the savegame that got saved when the mission starts, you should be able to finish it easy. I just went for the katana and lost lots of time trying to make a quickstep smoothie there. Then tryed the mission with lots of time lost. Walked as fast as I could to the supermarket and killed the guy with the katana (jump over shelves and attack from behind over and over again with katana) got meself the medicine and made it with on 1 milimeter of time left.. I did *all* story missions yesterday in 1 run, never had to start over because of timing mistakes, and even managed to kill some psychos and rescue some survivors.
General tips: first head to the parking lot and go fetch the maintenance key from the tunnels. You'll be thankful later you can get in and out of the tunnels whenever and wherever you want (cases 6-3 and 8-4 or so in particular).
Then whenever the Space Rider goes out of control, do that mission. I took out the convicts on the way there, so went over to Adam with a fscking huge machine gun in my hands. Poor Adam. Killing Adam gives you 2 things you need for the story missions: an endless supply of chainsaws and a vital shortcut from Paradise Plaza to the Wonderland. Whenever you have time to spare, walk by the Space Rider to pick up an extra chainsaw. It's twice as effective and durable as the Katana, and works especially well against Carlito and folks like the Butcher and the Supermarket owner.
The only story mission where I was actually close to running out of time was the last mission of case 8, and being able to sneak out of the tunnel right into the supermarket using my maintenance key made that so easy I still had half an hour left.

If you want a clue on the timebomb mission: when you go into the parking lot, turn left at the bottom (rather than right like the arrow tells you to). At the end of that corridor is a driveable van which will make mowing through zombies hella easy (and lessen the number of encounters you have with Carlito, who is near invincible in his van)
I have a problem though... it's related to the ending so I'll pop it in a spoiler tag.
I'm on the helipad at 12pm on the 22nd, but I get the cutscene for Ending C, with the pilot looking through binoculars and saying he can't see me?! What am I doing wrong? Preferably without giving away spoilers for Ending A or Ending B because I haven't seen those yet ;)

I figured it out. There's no spoiler here, but it's kind of important for people to know, you should read on:
At 12pm, you have to stand on the ROOF where the helipad is. If you stand on the helipad itself, or the steps of the helipad, it doesn't register as you being there... how lame is that?
Anyway, on to the ending, some definite spoilers here:
I got Ending A, with the helicopter crashing, if that's Ending A does it mean it's the best ending? Or in Capcom style, is there an Ending S somewhere? There was some thing right near the end about the military entering the "next stage of their plan", and a cutscene with a bald military guy with a big scar, does that get explained in Overtime Mode?
Overtime Mode is a great addition by the way... I thought the game was going to end after the Ending A cutscene, which would have been a bit of a letdown, but the post-ending cutscene was super-cool.
Just about to start Overtime Mode now.

How did you kill the butcher? Any tips? He keeps throwing me on the meathook. I've also noticed the time for the mission is still going. Do I have to defeat him before time runs out?? This guy is pissing me off..

Cage:
Get a couple of the invincibility potions - you can make these in the Paradise Plaza restaurant by mixing orange juice and pie. They won't actually make you invincible against the butcher, but they completely refill your health. Fill up your remaining item slots with guns.
Against the butcher, keep your distance. When he grabs a bit of meat to throw at you, position yourself so there's some other meat in between you (so his bit won't hit you). You should be able to get off some shots at him, and with any luck, the knives he throws should just hit other meat.
When he stops to sharpen his knives, go in close with a melee attack (there's a meat cleaver on the side somewhere. Don't be tempted to hit him more than twice because he'll stick you on a hook, but this cleaver attack is very powerful.
I don't think you're actually against any sort of clock, the only thing you've got to do is kill him before Carlito gets tenderised...

Thanks. I did it. I was unaware that carlito's hideout, where I started the mission, was next to the hunting store. Got me some shotguns and shot him verry easy from a distance..
Just finished the game with an A ending.. Hooray! Time for overtime mode.. I finished it on my first go without any big time or save problems. Still only level 16 so I hope it's enough to finish overtime.
Those agents are verry overrated if you ask me. Killed them without breaking a sweat with the shotgun. My inventory is full of them bigass machineguns now :) Killed over ten of them and in some fights fought 3 of them at a time.. 8)
At 12pm, you have to stand on the ROOF where the helipad is. If you stand on the helipad itself, or the steps of the helipad, it doesn't register as you being there... how lame is that?
I'm so glad you gave this tip, 'cause I read somewhere that you have to be on the helipad and not the roof.. It's deff. the roof and not the helipad.. Damn those kids that started this rumor. It allmost cost me precious hours.. :(

Well I missed it TWICE, once when I was on the helipad, once when I was on the steps of the helipad. The only time it worked was when I was just standing on the roof.
FINALLY beat the final boss - after about ten failed attempts, I came across this glitch (spoilers, obviously) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtj-XDf4X7w) which makes it easy.
As for the ending itself...
Bit strange, didn't show him getting away but then displayed some text after the credits which said he did... And it didn't mention whether the zombification was stopped. I think it sets things up nicely for a sequel, the 50 kids are still out there somewhere, how about another game with a more free-form city rather than just a mall?
Oh and what happened to Brad? Carlito chucked him in that room with all the zombies, but we never actually saw him die... I was kind of hoping I might get a phonecall to save him at some point.

I do think however, that Dead Rising is better than Saints Row. Dead Rising's learning curve is a bit steep if you can't read the text that CAPCOM refuses to fix. After you learn everything out (by trial and error, and by pure shit luck on your own) completely, it gets a lot better.
I for instance just learned yesterday that if you hold RT + Y, you can command your survivors around. Some will laugh at me, I know. It's simply impossible to realize this the first time through when your eyes haven't adjusted to the dumbass font size, and by the time you complete the game the first time, you forget about it assuming there's nothing new to learn. Try to complete Dead Rising without it. It's 1500X harder.
Also try and get a survivor that needs something specific (a.k.a.: food, weapon etc..which you have no fucking clue ) it's damn near retarded. I used to come up to survivors hoping they needed nothing. Sad huh?
What's that Otis? Sorry, I can't read what you're saying. It looks like blah blah blah to me.

At the end of the game, they still count towards your "survivors rescued" tally. The special ops guys always take everyone away, and at that point in the game there's nobody left to rescue anyway.

On the same subject, so I hang around, I've done all the cases, must surely be getting the true ending for my trouble so up I go to the helipad, hang around for a couple of hours, and chopper flying bloke has a look through some binoculers can't see me and proceeds to get eaten by a fucking zombie, so no lift or true ending for me then (silly cunt I took care of 54,750 of the slow moving bastards and he can't deal with 1 and then turn up to give me my lift that was promised).

Sweet, thnx for clearing that up. Guess I’ll be cruising the convertible through the maintenance tunnels this evening >:) (or is there a better way to rack up some serious zombie kill-count?)
The tunnels are the best and easiest way imo. But I didn't do it with the convertible. Doing the run myself at the moment and I'm doing it as follows:
First time in I took the convertible. Then drove it to the other side of the tunnels where there's a white car standing in the tunnels (it's beneath the bathrooms close to the movietheater). Drive that car towards the butcher and spin some laps there. Take the van and drive the long way back to the white car. Go into the elevator towards the mall and go up and down again. Walk back into the tunnels and take the white car towards the butcher etc.
That way you'r clearing allmost the whole tunnel area at every run. I'm at 15.000 but live disconnected me before I got the 10.000 achievement. Now it won't show up on my stats ;(

October 9th, 2006, 16:22
I did it with the van at the butchers shop by drivng down the hill just around the corner and then back upto were the van was parked and squashing that huge crowd, then back down the hill just around the corner and the game wil reset that crowd. Do this until the van conks out then just go through into the butchers shop and back out again and hey presto new van, repeat until 54.000 kills, i did it very quickly this way. Going from the white car to the van and back was taking too long for me, plus there was a risk of blowing the car up when a long way from either vehicle which made it a pain in the arse for me. It is well worth the effort whatever way you do it though the RMB is lethal.

Sweet, thnx for clearing that up. Guess I’ll be cruising the convertible through the maintenance tunnels this evening >:) (or is there a better way to rack up some serious zombie kill-count?)
I did it in about 40 hours, including a save pause and killing Adam for the one-handed, by *driving the convertible in the tunnels, to the butcher, spin some rounds to clear it up, race to the white car at the other end, head to the butcher, clear it up, drive outside, spin some rounds to clear up the parking lot, and repeat at the *. That's some 1000 kills per run if you do it right. I found the van not worth the trouble, it steers like a cow in thick shit.
I see btw people are getting the RMB before finishing the whole game, which is a shame imo. I did the whole game twice and got the true ending before I started on the genocider run, because to be honest the RMB is really WAY overpowered and takes some of the spontaneous fun from the game unless you're racking up the last achievements: I'm working on clothes horse, 20 survivors and 10 psychos now, last time I didn't get 3 of the psycho calls for some reason (Sean, Jo and the hippie) so got neither of the 10 psycho achievements (there's 11 psychos so you can miss one).

I'm not doing the genocider achievement for the megaman gun, but for some level up-ing.. Finished the game with level 16 and that wasn't enough for overtime mode. My inventory was too small and my energy level too low. I hope to achieve level 30 or higher with the tunnel run..Couldn't care less about that gun.. I'm happy with my katana :)

eehrm, just for the record, I’ve played through the game twice as well. First time round I was just screwing around with them zombsters and missed da choppah, second time around I finished all cases and got ending A. So I guess I "deserve" a little RMB action by now O-) .
Anyhow, I noticed last night I was a little short on time (10 hours before pick up) to go for the genocider achievement. Instead I just finished the game and started overtime mode. Had a pretty hard time in the beginning taking out those SF guys with any form of firepower. Then I accidentally picked one guy up, tossed him around and got an instant kill. I think this probably is the best way of dealing with them when encountered one on one up close unless you’re facing 4 or 5 SF guys simultaneously (but that’s where the kitana came in handy). Gathering all the required ingredients went pretty smooth from then on. Now I just have to find myself a nice collection of queens….

I just took the mini chainsaw with me in the tunnels, then avoided Carlito in his van untill he crashed into the wall then cut him up with the chainsaw (5 or 6 hits will do the trick). After that you'll have plenty of time collecting the bombs.

Just make yourself some nectar (Orange Juice * 2) or head to the tunnels en drive around in the same area a bit until every zombie there is dead and you can collect about 3 queens.

They're more or less instant kill with the mini chainsaws? As for the queens: using nectar gives a free queen, and bringing some nectar into the tunnels releases a queen every minute more or less.

The news article about a DR2 makes me really want to play through this.
When I first got it I was so focused on trying to get every mission / save everyone the first time through, but that's pretty impossible isn't it? When I'm only like level 16? I duno.
I love zombie movies, love zombie games. Really want to play this because I want to know the storyline... But lost planet comes out today. ugh. decisions.

You definitely can't do everything in the first go :P
It's possible to do all the psychos AND the story in one game, but you'll need to start at a 'decent' level (10+ or so), and you won't be saving any survivors. If you go for the 50+ survivors achievement: good luck, that's even nearly impossible with lvl 50 and the Real Mega Buster for various reasons :P
All in all the game has immense replay value because of this. You can just focus on different elements of the game (and achievements) every playthrough. I do heartily recommend you do Adam the Clown every time, because it gives infinite access to one of the best handweapons in the game and a great shortcut through the mall.

I'm dissapointed with Nino's gamerscore for this game. His gamerpic is the achievement icon for being a 7 day survivor, and here i always assumed he was one... but nope. I got more dead rising points than him :P.

I got the Mega Blaster last night and wow is it amazing. 300 'bullets', or energy balls... they kill zombies 1 hit, body shot or headshot. You can only pick up one, it doesnt respawn until you're out of bullets.
I'm glad I didn't get this gun before actually 'playing' through the game, as it would take some fun out, but then again ... it does bring a whole new level of fun to the game. I'm gonna use it to go for Saint and the 5/7 day achievements.
See, achievements aren't bad. I love this game. And look at all this extra crap achievements are gonna make me do. Awesome.

Not being knocked out means you have not been captured by zombies in the opening scenes and not by SpecOps in the end of the base game. For the duration achievements you need to play Infinity Mode, and good luck on that... last time I checked noone on my 100-man friends list had passed 2.5 hours ;)

get the shotgun or the sniper rifle.
if you've played the game and gotten to Carlito's Hideout, the gunshop is just down the coridor from it. Crisplips hardware store in the north plaza... its north of that, a little shop, but you have to get to it thru a little side corridor.

Paul,
Easiest way to kill those SoB's is to grab the machine gun on the second floor of Paradise Plaza. Go up the first set of stairs(Near "Kid's Choice Clothing) on the first landing, turn around and jump to the blue ledge and follow it around the corner the gun is almost above the door to the warehouse. Also grab the Katana on the second floor on the ledge next to the Juice 'fridge in "columbian Roastmaster"(Jump over rail)
Go out the door and trap them by having them run into a tree, hide behind another tree and just pump rounds into the gunner. Once you kill him, grab your Katana and slice the driver. The passenger will then hop into the driver's seat, so slice him up too(only takes like 3 or 5 strikes) Don't forget to jump in the car to get your "carjacker" achievement. BTW: these psychos don't count towards your kill 10 psycho's achievy:?

The Cultists can gas you, and you wake up in their cult room naked.
The Special Forces helicopter killed me my first time through, and instead of game over, I woke up in a helicopter with my hands tied, had a chance to free myself, couldn't.
Duno what happens if zombies catch you at the beginning. I assume you still get put in Security Office somehow.

SECRET JESSIE CUTSCENE If you go to the heliport and snip 22 zombies that are down below in the parking lot with a sniper rifle. Then go to the security room and a cut scene with happen. Frank will lay down for about 2 hours. If you do this before getting the medicine for brad then frank will go sit down on the bench and jessie will come in and sit next to you. She will kiss you and she will then take you to one of the empty rooms and you will have sex with jessie. You don't get to see any of it but it will level you up three levels. You also don't have to fight the grocery store psychopath because the door to the pharmacy will be opened. After you have sex with jessie she will be in her bra in tell you go out of the security room. Make sure you take a picture of her. If you do then you will get 8,965 PP. That is how you get the secret cut scene of jessie and frank
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SECRET CUTSCENE WITH BRAD Once you have had sex with jessie before you go down to collect the bombs if you stay in the security room for 1 hour 34 min. then another cut scene will happen. brad finds out about jessie and frank and he slaps jessie. He then threatens you to be gone by the time he gets back from the underground. Jessie will then start to cry. Carleto will not kill brad but you will have to after you collect all the bombs. If you kill him go back to the security room. That is how to get the secret brad cutscene.

Dead Rising has been my defining 360 experience to date. Really loved it. It might have been because my expectations weren't so high for it, which was why I think GOW dissapointed me so much, but i think its more the clever game design and the fact that Capcom know how to make damn good games at the moment.
Excellent news that they're on to the sequel then. Not quite sure how it'll work though. To not set it in some sorta shopping environment surely can't happen - its sorta the point right? But it gonna take some seriously creative plot devise to get us back into that, or another, mall again.
I KNOW!!! Lets do one of those "what i'd like to see in Dead Rising 2 is..." sorta things!?
Any suggestions???

Save System
The save system should be enhanced so that there are multiple save slots. This would allow for backup saves, and for multiple people to enjoy the game on one system. This isn't so much a gameplay enhancement as it is a courtesty to the customers. We shouldn't be required to have a Memory Card and a Hard Drive to have 2 save files.
Weapons
They've covered a large assortment of weapons with the mall, but I've seen some great ideas on the forums. Steamrollers, construction equipment, cranes, farm equipment. If co-op is involved, multiperson weapons are a must.
Hand to hand combat needs improved in my opinion. Better combos, better control. This should occur while using weapons too. Certain weapons should be 'spammable' like the butchers cleaver, but just aren't. When firing a gun the controls should be a lot more intuitive than they currently are.
Replayability
We've all played through this game multiple times, and will with the next one as well. It would be great if multiple play throughs guaranteed you a new perspective of the storyline, like old Resident Evil games. Yes, there is the case that I missed a few survivors the first time / found them the second, and that gave more story... but its not quite the same as if I played through the game as Isabella.
Survivors
I envision a survivor 'pool' that the game could choose from, ensuring that each play through had a random set of survivors. Ex: 300 total survivors programmed into the game, each w/ their own story / text / dialogue, each with their own behaviors of how they follow you. But each time you start '72 hour mode', only 75 Survivors will be placed at random locations on the map. This ensures that each play through is different, prevents the use of a standard walkthrough guide, and would make the game last a lot longer.
Photos and Barricades
Taking photos needs to be more important to the storyline. There are a total of 3 places in game where you're required to use your camera, but even then they're for Survivors / Psychopaths, not for the main storyline (Kent photo challenges, Survivors Trio in the gunshop require a photo of the air duct, and the girl at the end has you take photos of her in the security office.). If we're a photojournalist, make us act like one. Make taking photos integral to the entire story. If I went to Wilamette Mall... got this entire story on a zombie outbreak, didn't take any photos, and then tried to tell the world about it... who's really going to believe me?
Another part of the game that should be improved upon is building barricades. A few times in the game I've disassembled barricades that NPC's have constructed... but when did I ever need to build one? If the zombies are more powerful at night... maybe in 2 they could be made to be more intelligent at night as well, as in... they're searching for me, and will kill me. Each night you could be forced to build a secure barricade, to protect your hideout. Maybe if you ensure 100% protection it would even allow you to 'skip' the next 8 hours when you'd sleep, and then in the morning the zombies would be docile again. At any rate, barricading should have a purpose.
Puzzles
Puzzle type quests would be awesome. HARD puzzle quests too. Not a guy in Room A who says "you need item x for Room B." I'm talking find an item in a hidden room of a hidden room... use that item to unlock a mystery in a diff room, use that combined with 3 other items to do something else... PUZZLES!
In Dead Rising, it's the same 2 quests over and over: escort someone, kill someone. End this cycle! Add variation!
We should definitely have the ability to push / pull objects, (this works in conjunction with the Barricade suggestion above), which would allow us to climb to new heights of fun. These abilities would be key in figuring out some puzzles.
and I wrote a Frank the Pimp guide for anyone who doesn't have it:
