When I started the game I played on co-op cuz of my roomate (/angry), and then he of course quit within 30 minutes like i knew he would... so i bit the bullet and went to restart...

and it loaded the last checkpoint my roomate and I had gotten through while playing splitscreen.

I don't know if this includes Live, but it was a nice suprise for the single / coop modes.

I don't have to press any special button, right? Just flip the microphone 'on' with the little switch, and then i'm always on? flip it off when im not talking?

I kept talking during a match and noone would respond to me, but others were actively talking, so i duno if i was actually transmitting. You can only shout "can you guys hear me" so many times before you feel like an idiot.

Also, was Halo limited to 4x4 matches like this? (hell, is GOW even limited to that? thats all i played.) 4x4 is so much reliance on individual player skill / you really gotta work together as a team.

The biggest thing i loved about Battlefield is the pure mayhem involved in 32+ player matches. Shoot left, you get a kill, shoot right, you get another, toss a nade and bam, 2 kills + a teamkill (it was worth it, no?). Mayhem! So it's a little different coming to this game. GOW online feels like counterstrike again: i die, and maybe pick up a skill or two in the 5 minutes that i spend waiting / watching teammates to cower behind a box / finish the enemy.

Oh well. after i learned the base layout of each map i played, i started to at least kill a guy or two before i died.

but how to talk?

It's working on other games presumably? Try it on a game you know you can be heard on Voice chat, to rule out hardware malfunction, If works then GoW or net connection or the host's connection or Bill Gate's connection might be to blame. Battlefield 2MC is fucking awesome BTW That game gives me rushes, although I can't get past the sniper stage on SP which is bull and lame cos its level 2 MP is unmatched for me(so far at least.)

I wasn’t expecting to get this game but after a few minutes of watching my friend play, I knew I had to have it...

This game proved me wrong well sort of, I just knew this would be the same old shooter like before aliens come from space try and destroy the world, humans win... But after playn the single player I was immediately addicted. It got so serous on one part (while playn on insane) my partner in the game (? on name) he yells out Marcus look out and this exploding this comes right out at me. Man I thought I was about to shit myself (scared the hell out of me) it even made for a few laughs at the house to, but that another story.

Please note that I said this game would be a run and gun, the only way it's not is if you play it on insane then you better fall back on tactics.

Not to mention the online, that shit kick's major ass. But in need more practice.

Maybe I've said something about it in advance because I really don't like military shooters and I hated Ghost Recon 2. I picked it up at release and I've never said a bad word about it since. Never said that it didn't live up to the hype.

I received my copy today and only played for about an hour or so before I had to leave the house. First impression? (don't hate me) I agree with Nino to a certain extend. I may adjust my opinion after I've put some more hours into the game and take the time to enjoy it, but first impression is not what the hype made me believe.

I'll explain. The hype made me believe I was buying a Ferrari Enzo but after getting behind the wheel I realized I was driving a Lamborghini Diablo. So still an awesome game and one of the best around but in a crazy sort of way I was expecting more. A couple of things bugged me; 1 the minor framedrops in the cutscenes, 2 the colour filter (bit to greyish), 3 the weird kind of noise filter (could be me and the lack of sleep the last days. btw, it's not the tv. I own a sony bravia lcd). 4. the halo like shooting (empty clip on enemy, reload, empty another clip and he's dead).

Needless to say it's still one of the best titles I own and gonna love every minute of it :)

Aye, it would have been on casual by default. I played through it on casual with a friend who isn't really that in to games, and it was a bit too easy. The difficulties should be considered this way in my opinion:

Casual = easy
Hardcore = normal
Insane = hard

Co-op is the only way to play it too, so much more fun with a friend, and it means you can perform proper flanking maneuvers.

Yeah i couldn't agree more, last night a mate and i said 'lets have a quick blast on co-op' SURE after 3hours i blinked for the first time. I have NEVER played any game like this in co-op before, what was i thinking, this is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Think i will be buying more co-op enabled games from now on.

My first impressions were excellent. Love the control system, although sometimes he does want to stick to a wall, or stands up to improve the reception on his radio.

Online Multiplayer, absolutely loved it, 8 players isnt really enough 10-12 would have been better. Maps are worked out fairly well. Some people just don't get it. CliffyB KNOWS that it fits into these stereotypes. Do you really think when they wrote that, they were saying "Oh man, this dialog is the best dialog of the century!"? If you take the game too seriously, you can't get the subtle comedy that the title provides.

I'm tired of people hating the game just because it's hyped. It's just as bad as saying MGS4 will be bad when it launches just because you don't have a PS3.

Other elements such as the documentary-film camera angle when you run is a lovely moment initially but because you can only really run in a straight line you soon stop doing it once the visual impact has worn away.

Gears has its flaws I will admit, the biggest one being that in SP the CPU 'dom' is so retarded and dies so often you yourself will die after failing to save him on more than one occasion. He is USELESS in beserker fights, and always gets munched.

Still, the game is so great I agree with Currys 10/10. It is not perfect, but it is DAMN good.

On your own you can't do a strategy approach with flanking, sniping etc. at the same time ;)

And I think they don't make Dom and the others too smart, so they also get hurt sometimes so you need to save them. It's a part of the game... I guess it wouldn't be fun if the AI of your team would be higher or on par with the Locust. You could sit back/stand back and let the CPU do the work.

I really don't care so much about it. The team is less, you'll have to work harder or just play co-op with a friend online :)

I assume you mean the driving section is giving you grief there is a trick to it i quickly worked out.

As soon as the old man yells 'Krill' swap to the UV turret and blast away at the krill until Dom says 'Clear' dont be tempted to move until you hear him say 'clear'.
That way i was able to get through that entire section on Insane without barely any damage taken. Best of luck with the next section it's tough but great fun but needs no tips just a accurate sniper gun.

Coop with a live player is already easier than with a CPU partner, imagine how easy it would become with 3 live players instead of CPU partners. Apart from that, the game simply doesn't always have 4 players around. What would players 3 and 4 do during that huge-ass section where Baird and Cole are stuck at the stranded camp? How would you do the driving section? I even dare say that in many of the cases where Baird and Cole take an alternative route there isn't even geometry or textures defined for their route.

OMG i'm at General RAAM on Insane and jeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzz, he is handing me my arse on a plate every time, pop head up and BAM death. I will beat the mofo though, i can't let him beat me. Only act 5 puts up a real fight on insane the rest are quite easy in singleplayer.

As for the weapon kills in Ranked matches it will probably take me along time as i find the Ranked games are full of assholes who scream obscenities if you get to the gun they want first, or when they get killed and scream 'that was f****** b******* man i got him first' it drives me mad. These people, i hate to say this but it's true, all tend to be Americans.

How do you go about getting the 'kill 3 enemies at once 10 times' achievement? Do you get credit for all the kills at once if you throw a few grenades into an emergence hole as it opens? If not, i doubt i ever get this achievement.

There's an easier way to do that mate , go on the training level then keep killing those three locust that burst the door with a grenade until you get it. Just die after you kill them to start again from checkpoint . Good luck its my birthday ! :)

Not to sure if this has already been talked about but I've heard that the host of a match has a little advantage. Esp. with the shotgun. I myself haven't noticed a huge difference between hosting a match and joining, but I will admit during some games I joined there does seem to be a little more bang to the host's shotgun. In one game it was to the point where the host was just diving into people and getting one hit kills. Just wanted to know if anyone knew if this was true and is it just a glitch or is the host given an adv. purposely? I'll admit at times it does get annoying.

Finally got hold of Gears last night 8) Jumped straight into story mode on Hardcore, got my ass handed to me on a plate, so I've played through in Casual, which was fairly straightforward apart from RAAM. Even then he nearly killed me, my bow/grenades were out and he was charging for me, I was low on health and just firing wildly, expected to die but then the end sequence cut in 8) 8)

Gonna try and rack up some multiplayer achievements tonight, my girlfriend's away so I might actually not sleep tonight :D

I completed all the single player / Dom stuff about 2 weeks ago... been working on Call of Duty on vet since then... (got it done saturday!)

So all day sunday i spent playing GoW online... and i'm in love now. For the first time in a few weeks i now have that feeling while i'm here at work.. i can't wait to get home and get back in teh game!!!

I used www.ign.com today, they opened up a guide or two (all?) for xmas, and i was able to print out a layot of each multiplayer map. Knowing the map is KEY in every FPS. Knowing where each weapon is is just as key.

I know Mansion and Gridlock already like the back of my hand. 8 more to go.

Sure, I played on Casual difficulty and it suited me well. I actually died on several occasions, just enough to not become annoying. But making up for the lack of content by increasing the difficulty of the game doesn't really seem fair.

Gears of War is tactical? Gears of War simply is Quake with a cover ability, while lacking in all of the other aspects that made Quake so damn good (level design, weapons, power-ups, armor, speed, game mechanics, etc.). Most matches end up in two persons of opposing teams standing behind some form of cover, waiting for the other person to appear, anyway.

That's the price of popularity.
Rainbow Six Vegas is more popular in my friends list ;)

But I play Ranked, because my time spent is still going towards a cumulative goal. 10,000 Kills. I'm at around 1100. I try and join a Player Match when someone on my friends list invites me to one, but I would never quit a Ranked Match to do so. If you invite me, give me about 15 min before I show up.

Oh and I don't see many crazy competitive people at all in Ranked. I don't see people crying 'we can't lose this guys i don't want a loss on my record' / etc. Not much about kill stealing... i mean i myself have made a comment or two when the situation is absurd, but then again, i've turned around and downed a guy only to tell my teammate to kill him when the situation calls for it.

in the game, go to versus > leaderboards. search 'me' for 'warzone' for 'all time', count kills, do the same for 'me' 'assasination' 'all time' and add them, repeat for Execution.

I hope a patch adds the simple and obvious feature of seeing everything at once.

I've been playing GOW and I've just started Act 2 and I am stuck in an area where there is a regroup and I think there should be a kickable door or does someone else kick this door (I've read it is a character called Jack in a walkthrough) How do I get out or get him to kick it - or was he killed earlier and I have to start again as I cannot go back before the last save.

First person means through somebodies actual pespective. If the camera cannot handle that view, the game is not first person, and therfor cannot be an FPS. The term Third Person shooter has been around for years (Lone soldier anybody?) so the acronym TPS was to be expected eventually. I am suprised nobody invented it sooner, although it will take a while to take off.

If nobody invented new terms, we would all still be calling FPS games Doom clones.

This pisses me off to some extent. It generaly takes around 10-15 mins just to get 4 people total in the room and then like 2 mins after that more people will join. I think it's because not many people will jump into a game with only one other person in it but when they see 6/8 and 7/8 they'll join.

What I do is I start hosting a game, go downstairs, grab a beer, smoke a cig, pack and smoke a bowl, and when I'm done coughing my lungs out there is usually 3 other people in the room. Needless to say, I'm pretty wasted by the time the game finally starts.8)7

Just got the update, lets test this out.

Okay, straight off the bat, the main menu looks squashed as hell compared to last time. NOT VERY good first impressions. Text is alot smaller on menu screen, only just visible, not good at all. Maybe just my TV, god knows.

Edit: Seems ALL text EVERYWHERE is much smaller, I had a quick ranked game and couldn't read some guys name. Like I said, might just be my TV.
Also, this doesn't fix "disk is unreadable" problem. DAMN!

Finding games is 200% quicker.

Yeah at first i couldn't connect to anyone, also i was having to reset to the dashboard board but on the fifth try i got in and now all seems ok. Odd i hope they haven't fucked it up so people can't join in, or maybe it's the different versions (patched and unpatched) unable to connect to each other and once everyone is updated it may be all ok.

in the march issue of OXM (usa) it says in the rumor mole section that gears of war downloadable content will be available by the time we read this...so i'm guessing they meant newsstand date.

I heard another rumor about this (I think in Feb's OXM) that with the DLC there will be an additional game type added. Maybe to replace the highly-ignored Assassination mode. (go to leaderboards, view all-time player stats on assassination, It's a difference of almost half a million people between the number of people played Assassination {360,000} versus Execution{760,000}, the next lowest player # warzone's the most popular with last I checked, something like 800,000+ {920,000+}(don't know for sure, I'm at work)

But It is interesting to note that almost one million people have played warzone

i think assassination is pretty boring, i dont see anything else really working. i'm fine with execution. it's too easy to run away from everyone so i dont think CTF would work. king of the hill would be great fun though.

Deathmatch or an Assault (as in Unreal 2004/5/6) type gamemode would be great but both would need the shotgun toning down. As it stands as people get better at the game its turning into 'Shotgun of War' not Gears of War.

i happen to love the shotgun, it's the most fun weapon in the game.

i found this old thing over at teamxbox.com, it's from just before the game's release:
“Warzone”, which is a kind of a last-man standing team-based versus multiplayer mode; “Execution”, which as the name suggests is a mode where you have to perform an execution to finish off your opponents (more on executions later); and “Assassination”, in which each team objective is to kill the other team’s leader. I've been noticing a strange somewhat annoying occurance going on in Multi-player lately.

I think it's a disease.

I'm talking about a group of people that enter into a room, immediately, instinctively go to CoG side, and start ordering people to go to the locust side. (presumably so their 12 year-old friends can join)

I don't know why they always want to go CoG, Maybe they think Carmine runs faster, is a smaller target, this is all bullshit. This makes me yearn for an option to boot assholes from games.

So please, help end Cogaholism today.

I agree, I'm sick of little shits who come on and think they own everything and can tell everyone what to do. I find the best remedy when they order you over to another team is to tell them them to stfu, this cues a barrage of abuse so I then just put them on mute, Job done.

Truth be told, I make people go to the other team, but only for a harder challenge for me. That's player match, ranked you can't do much about it.
