View Full Version : Achievements - what makes you tick??

I have a question for the best XBLA community around (yes, even you YLA G).
We just finished implementing our 12 achievements and I'm wondering.
What are you looking for in achievements?
Additional gameplay?
Different gameplay?
An easy way to gain points for your GT?
Harde challenges?
Easier challenges?
Something else maybe??
Have a good one.

I like it if they're well ballanced. Not like EA games where you get 200(gp) for taking the disk out of the box and stuff like that. Or like Perfect dark where only 20(gp) are achieved after completing the game and the rest is online stuff.
So, well ballanced and some real challange to get it is also good.
Sunday, blue vs blue, Azzurri vs Le Bleus :) Hope Italy wins :P (just kidding)..

I'm not a huge fan of achievements, but I do like the ones that make you do things you wouldn't normally.
Eg: Complete a race backwards or...
Kill 1,00 zombies with bare knuckles (From Dead Rising.)

Different gameplay! Achievements are a great way to stimulate other types of gameplay and exploration. Take the easter egg achievement in Marble Blast for instance, that one's great!

Additional gameplay?
Definitely. I love it when achievements make me play the game again after finishing it. I finished Half-Life 2 on normal, and never bothered on hard. I completed CoD2 on Veteran because I wanted the bitching achievements. Same price, more fun.
Different gameplay?
Definitely. Achievements like Tomb Raiders Time Trials and Awards are cool, because they make you look differently at the game and in the case of the Trials even train.
An easy way to gain points for your GT?
Up to a certain extent. No achievement should be impossible or nearly impossible (black belt grandmaster in MSR springs to mind), nor should it be based on 'best of the world' crap or something like that (see GRAW). Everyone who trains (for a long long time perhaps) should be able to get all achievements. But someone who doesn't train for hours should also get points. DOA4 fills the "best of the world" crap by awarding achievements for grades. There's 1000 people or so with SS rating, so they all got the highest leaderboard achievement. But there's also 1000's of S guys, 1000's of A etc.
Harde challenges?
See my CoD2 point a bit above :)
Easier challenges?
See my "balance" point :P
Something else maybe??
The purpose of achievements should be that the gamer actually has a sense of achievement after getting it. That means no tedious bullcrap that's merely a matter of playing ridiculous hours (8 hours straight online in GRAW... comeon I have a job guys) or repeating the same action over and over (1000 sharks in Feeding Frenzy... gimme a break). Achievements that just state "I have no life" have no use. I think Tomb Raider has good achievements in general, focusing both on completing the game, giving points for recompleting on hard, and setting totally different kinds of challenges with the awards and the time trials. Bad example would be most EA Sports games, where playing for 5 hours grants you a free 1000GP without the faintest sense of achievement.

I think the pacisfism (sp?) achievement (survive 60 seconds without firing a shot) on geometry wars ingenious for a few reasons...
- Some people would instinctively try to do it without knowing about it
- It helps you get better at the game
- It's fun, and you want to try it again even after you get the achievement.

They should be a good spread, so that you really have to be a pretty obsessive fan of the game to get all the points. So for instance, spread the points out across the different game modes, which is a good way of getting people to try the areas of the game that they wouldn't normally do.
One example of how to take it too far though is Football Manager 2006 (http://wiki.xboxic.com/Football_Manager_2006) - there's some pretty unique achievements there, but the points aren't worth the amount of effort - "Win 5 cup competitions: 5pts" could take you about 100 hours of gameplay...
On a personal note - a few 360 games have had "Secret Achievements", where it doesn't actually display what the achievement is until you get it. (I think Condemned did this?) I think they're a really good idea, I know there are gamerpoint lists online everywhere but it'd be nice if you didn't know what would get you points, it adds to the sense of achievement rather than simply "I need to get another 100 sniper kills before I get those points".
Curry

A lot of games have secrets, indeed Condemned but also DOA4 and Kameo for example :) And yes, they're a good idea.

Like others have said, I like acheivements that are well balanced. A couple points for basic stuff, a few for completing the game, but those should not pass 50 gamer points total. and the other 150 should be either hard or innovative. Like someone said, race a whole track while driving backwards would be cool.

i would like to see achievements not being to hard but also not to easy. I would like achievements that make you play the game longer. for example: the achievements in Oblivion: they are easy to obtain but they take u a long time to gain them and they make u see the games entirety

I hear you guys.
There's one thing I need to keep in mind while balancing / adding gameplay / rewarding players / adding hidden achievements: XBLA games are only allowed 12 of them for a total of 200 pts.
Compared to a AAA game, we have less possibilities.
I do agree on what you guys are saying and I think what we added in 'Mad Tracks' will do the trick.
I'll see if I can post the list here soon...
Did anyone had fun playing King Kong - or am I the only one getting very bored with it???

I think landmark acheivements are important(tho the 1000 sharks on FF is ridculous) and I think used well they all add to the one more go factor.
I think achievment teirs(easy, med, hard) are imortant, a lot of games go from the sublime to the ridiculous but this is tricky as everyone has different abilities. And also even and fair rewards to many games give to small reward for an achievement that took forever and as mentioned other games give huge rewards for 10 minutes gaming.

July 10th, 2006, 00:08
I think my most important take on the achievements bit is that all should be "achievable", given enough training, rather than spent time. If you're good in a game and become better in it, you should be able to get 100%. Some landmark achievements help (X headshots in an FPS, like GRAW and PDZ), but the huge ones (1000 sharks) are imho just pointless. I might still get the shark achievement though if I'm really bored often enough :+

A mixture of achievments is what is needed, some easy to show a part finished game, some harder and requiring skill to achieve, not just time. (BTW the 1000 sharks in Feeding Frenzy is supposed to be quite easy to get if you just stick on the a shark level and get eaten by a oyster when ever you are close to finishing that level.)
Of course something like the Viral achievment (http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2006/07/11/best-achievement-ever) that Gastronaut have come up with in small arms sounds excelent. Having four developers 'infecting' others who go on to infect more is a great idea.

I think a great example is Marble Blast Ultra. I mean, a majority of the achievements are the same thing but increasing difficulty. Though, they aren't insanely hard, it is still a challenge to unlock them all. But, with the single player, there are online achievements. The online achievements are fun in MBU because yes, they may not take long but they require some skill as opposed to 'Play on LIVE in Chicago'. Thirdly, you have the Easter Egg achievements; they are not things you would normally encounter and it requires you to go that extra mile, away from the course of the game, to complete. I like the diversity of the achievements and the moderation of the types.

Just while I think of it, can I ask if the achievements scores are worth like 8, 12, 6, 14 (eg. GRAW) and numbers like that, or are they like 5, 10, 15, 20 (eg. CoD2, Perect Dark Zero, Oblivion, that type of thing)?

Forgot to mention in that post that having the scores worth 8, 12, and numbers like that annoys me for some strange reason. I always like my GamerScore to end in either 0 or 5, lol. I don't know why... but meh.

I'm stuck on the 1958 World Cup Finals Brazil Vs. Sweden 4-2:
80th minute down by 2 goals against Brazil
I think I've tried this one with a mate about 50 times and I still can't get it even into extra time! What makes it worse is that everytime you try the game forces you to watch Brazil make the same exact substitution around the 85th minute.
As for the Scotland one if your having difficulty I suggest you mess with their formation and change it to 3-4-3 as well as field all their slowest players especially in defense. It also helps to put their strikers as defenders and vice versa. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help. Not long after I posted my last message, I got the 4th goal... but those little f***ers got a goal in the 90th min... I was going CRAZY!!! I turned the game off right away and went to an almost as annoying game known as Frogger.
And I thought you didnt have to do the World Cup Finals Challenges to get the achievement.
And, omg... I know... I hate the sub animation. Netherlands keep chaning Makaay for Kuyrt (probs spelt that wrong; changed the spelling a bit... so... one of the ways I thought is probs right, lol), or the other way round.
Also, I find that if I run to the edge (or near it) of the box, press X, cross the ball in and press B when it gets to the other striker (along with the left analog stick to the left, and kinda of down), the ball always goes wide. I find that I have to volley it (LT + X or X, let the ball drop, then press B to shoot) in to score, but that's hard if there are loads of defends in the box.
I try and use (like I just said) LT + X to cross it in, let it drop and volley it in...... try using that to score against Brazil.
Also, you got any tips for that Brazil challenge where you start at the 10th min and you gotta score 5 goals again Chilli? I tried it twice, and could only get 1 goal each time.

Yeah 90 percent of the goals I score are on the volley, the only time the header seems to work is if your within the six yard box. It especially works well on the counterattack as they don't have as many defenders there to swarm you. For the Brazil one if I remember correctly most of the strikers for Brazil are terrible headers in the game with the exception of Adriano so I'd suggest you play 4-2-4 with Adriano up front. Put Ronaldinho and Kaka on the flanks and make sure you field the Stars you can buy from the store like Carlos Alberto and Zico. This one wasn't too difficult as I recall, you'll probably get it after a few tries.

All this MSN slang is making my eyes bleed
lol! If you think this is bad, you should see some MSN conversations!
I generally only use MSN slang when I'm typing a lot or have typed a lot that day. I spend a lot... well... in fact... most of my time on computers. So, I get lazy and use slang.
I use a lot more slang if I'm talking to some of my Irish speaking friends (some are Irish only speakers, so, can't use English), because most Irish sayings are longer then the English. So, for example, instead of say "Go raibh maith agat", which means "Thanks", we say "GRMA". Another example is with the word "Seachtaine", which means "Week". For short, we say "7N", because the word for 7 is "Seacht".
However, Irish has some quite a few bonuses... Like, I can say whatever I like, and you guys won't understand... lol. Also, the big bonus is in writing the word "Because". It's a pain in the ass, to have to keep writing in English (like in stories, or in answering questions). However, in Irish, it's just three letters... "Mar".
I really went off topic there... lol. I get lost in myself at times, lol. So, yeh... I'm gonna shut up now, lol.

I would like additional achievements with extra downloadable content or maps for games. Like Call of Duty 3 for instance, get an extra 200 points or so for doing different things or killing more people in the Bravo map pack.

I hear you.
If I say we could work on a free additional pack with added achievement points, would that be ok?
Now we would have to think about two achievement... Any clue?
Cheers,
Denis.

Something really challenging...play a developer!
or something unusal like ram or hit a car 5 times on a track
Plus MadTracks would be the very first Arcade game with more than 200 points? \o/

We're still here. But the list isn't something we've decided yet.
So it's still open for other ideas. Submit them.

I can't stand an arcade game that has a abunch of online achievements. As we all know most arcade games die out to where no one plays them anymore. If you are late to the game or just don't get the achiement right away you could miss out due to lack of people playing. Make one or two... but noghitn more and don't make them tough to get.

Haha... I meant one or two online ones... but ya that would be funny. Then 11 achievements that are next to impossible but are worth nothing.

We'll be designing achievements for ToW pretty soon, maybe it's time for a new thread?
Look for "[From the dev] Let's talk ToW achievements."
Have a great day,
DenisDenis.
