You must all know by now that there is an option in personal settings
(selection in the Guide button) which allow you to appear offline
to others...

If you think that choosing to appear offline actually works think again !
There is a sure way to tell if someone is truly offline or not from the offline
description. When someone is really offline the systems also informs of the
amount of time he/she has been offline.

Look at the following example of two people offline. One of the has chosen to "appear offline" the other has not

Friend_A Last online 1 hour ago
Friend_B Offline

If you havent guessed by now , Our FRIEND_B is the one that hides his
true status.

I wish microsoft would see my post and do something about it.

Did you doublecheck this? Because I think it is related to the selected option to hide what you are doing online personally instead of a bug in the appear offline option.

Howcome you have 8000+ points but haven't played a single game according to your gametag? Or did you block this info somehow? Afraid of 'The Man' seeing all your moves?? :P Guess you're the onlyone who uses the 'appear offline' feature ;)

But seriously, if this is the case then it's just as bad implemented as MS Messenger. If you 'appear offline' on MSN your name will still be on top between the online users (depending on your sort order).

When a person doesn't sign on for more than a certain amount of days, they also appear as 'offline' with no data to show the last time they were on.

I think it may be a month.

That's Not Quite True. I have a friend that reads :
"Offline Last Online 84 days ago"

That friend of yours should be banned from using a 360! almost 3 months without using it is a shame. It should be forbidden! :+

How can he be a friend anyway if he never games with you ;)

I have 97 friend's in my list, and it's hard to keep track of everyone of them.
occasionally my list is revised and updated with new additions and / or
deletions.

whenever they do xbox live maintenance the "last online" stuff resets.

The only time you appear off line is when there is no Internet hooked up to your 360 and when a gamer tag is canceled. I also think after an extreme amount of time it also shows off line.

Do you have a regular XBOX b/c on 360 it shows how long the persons been "OFFLINE".

Depends on your privacy settings (Guide -> Personal Settings).
