Hey guys, I was jsut curious as to how important you guys think good music in video games are. In my opinion good music can really make a video game special. I enjoyed prey very well and also the music put the game at a higher level. So jsut curious as to if you guys think its important.

I think for games like Resident Evil then music plays an important part of the game as it sets the atmosphere. In most racing games though it's not. I just tend to put on CD instead of what EA or whoever think what music is cool which is usually crappy American Corporate Sunshine Upper Class Rock (my name for bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco and Lost Prophets (yes I know they're Welsh))

Good music is a must for me.. Has to be dolby surround for a really good atmosphere. What would Condemned be without the great sound? Not much imho. _o_
At the moment I'm playing through 'Dreamfall: The longest journey' and it would suck without the great soundtrack which really put's in a unique atmosphere.. Too bad they're fucking up the adventure genre with lame action moves where you'll have to fight and stuff.. What's with that? It doesn't belong in an adventure!..sigh..

Yeah, all of the "EA Trax" ones have really gone downhill (for the record, they peaked with Madden 2003, even though I think that one had Good Charlotte on it...)
The last two GTAs have been a great example of how to integrate music into games - the radio station feature works really well. Certainly better than Burnout 3, which I seem to remember tried to do the same thing, but their DJ (Stryker?) was awful.
The last good soundtrack I remember was Fahrenheit, there was a good mix of original score and also some good licenced stuff (introduced me to "sounds a bit like Nickelback but isn't" Theory Of A Deadman).
I'm not too bothered about this sort of thing though, the 360's well-implemented custom soundtrack support is good enough for me (fades down during cutscenes, and since the last update you can now go back to the dashboard without losing your place).

well i mean isnt that why it would be called an action/adventure game :P

Actually I thought the music on NFSMW was great, although it did get repetitive once you got in the top 5 ;)
Music on Condemned was great :P

/me lubs the music from BFV and GTAVC.
Also the music from the 7th Guest were great. I am now busy on review for BFME2 and with the use of the music from the movies the music is sucking you in deeper.

The Lumines soundtrack 8)
Lumines 2 soundtrack looks awful (nonsense licenced music like Black Eyed Peas and Gwen Stefani), I guess the Live version will be the same :(

I was just talking about this the other day with a friend, about how music in games has really changed. I think the midi music back in the days of NES especially added to the games nostalgia. I mean who doesn't know the theme to Mario Bros. and then of course personal favorites like Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Galaga, Zelda, Sonic, Double Dragon...I could go on and on about all of the music I remember from those games and really I love to hear it every so often to remind me of how great those games were. On the other hand today, I find that the music is just another marketing ploy especially in EA games. Other games with original scores... they can be awsome and really add a lot to a games atmousphere, but they will never have that repetitive, simple, and addictive quality of the music from those older games.

I loved the music to the game Advent Rising, but the game itself wasn't very good, but yet I kept playing because of the music lol.

One soundtrack that most definitely shouldn’t be forgotten is the one from Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. Stealthy atmospheric tunes composed by Amon Tobin fit the settings of the game perfectly. Hell, I even bought the CD and am still using one of them tracks as a ringtone. Nothing but love for the Ninja Tune label O+

i absolutely love orchestral music in games. it makes them seem so much more epic. im not a huge fan of halo but the music was immensely satisfying, and in cod2 it added somewhat of an emotional feeling.

Need I say more ;)
No seriously, musicwise Chaos Theory definitely stands out from the previous two SC titles imho.
But, how on earth could you have missed the third installment of one of the best franchises EVER :D ?

oh no, i have the game, and i played the single player, just not to completion. I enjoyed the game online and it took up alot of the games playing time for me. And it is the best of the series...even the single player because it was the only one of the three that had me intrested in the story.

Music can improve a video game, hell I even listened to red alert' hell march (and other tracks from the game) outside of the game because it was just that good.

I don't care about music while I'm playing but good symphony stuff for cut scenes and major moments are awesome. Even build up music when you're getting to a tough part like in Half Life 2 or say Halo. And I like a menu that uses more than one track of music so it doesn't get too repetative..

Personally Jet Set Radio Future's soundtrack really enhanced the experience for me. Absolutely fantastic tunes in that game.

I thought that game had good music except for one song where it was liek this woman screaming all high pitch, besides that it was a great sound to fit the game.
