View Full Version : Saints Row

Was a letdown for me. I didnt have high expectations and I knew there would be framerate issues because it was an ancient build but besides that I coulndt enjoy it. It stole way too much from San Andreas and didnt add a whole lot of new things. Sure it looks nice and the physics are fun to play with but the city is boring, the cars are pretty meh, there are no bikes, boats and planes (not in the demo and as far as I know they're not in the full either). Where San Andreas had awesome humor, great art and a lot of variaty in the setting, Saint's Row had none of that. The whole urban thing seems forced, the radio station was annoying and the enemies/main characters had no characteristics to them. In San Andreas you had awesome character as OG Loc but Saint's Row has stupid faceless gangsters which are only identifyable by their shirts.

In short; they stole a lot from San Andreas but not enough to make it enjoyable and they didn't add enough of their own ideas to justify the stealing. What do you think?

Nevermind, Saints Row time, bitch!

I myself liked it. I kind of wonder what a San Andreas demo would've looked like in an early build. Probably not so good. About the airplanes, we know there's a Helicopter at least from the making of video(on the disc anyway). The radio thing was a little annoying, but they only played like 3 or 4 different songs. The complete version has 300(I think?) different tracks.
Yeah, they stole a lot from San Andreas, but that's because a lot of San Andreas works. Saints Row even uses the same controls.

Something missing from Saints Row is like the little recorded tricks you do in cars and bikes and shit. Like when you did a wheelie, it would say 30 feet, or 50 feet or whatever. Or a long ass jump in a car would be recorded, or landing on two wheels. I liked that in San Andreas.

[Back to Saints Row]I like how you can shoot out specific things on the cop car, like the six different lights on the top and that detail. I like the damage on the cars. I like how you open a door to a building, and there's no loading ever.

I died a couple times from the metal flying away from the exploding cars. I want the game. It's the only game where you're like 'Whoa cool' when you die instead of getting pissed off.

It was hella disappointing. I moaned in another thread that I hated San Andreas' "gangsta" setting. So in the Saint's Row demo, I gave up as soon as I got to the mission that asked me to "round up ho's".

Draw distance is impressive, pathfinding on the map is a nice touch, and I suppose it'll look OK once they sort the framerate out for the release version. But yeah, it's just GTA 360, but not in a good way. Zero for originality.

Curry
August 2nd, 2006, 16:02
I don't care about zero for originality. They took a working concept and improved on the by far worst thing of the GTA series: PS2 graphics from the previous century.

I liked the demo and I won't be buying the game, since GTA wasn't my style and so this blatant but imho well executed copy isn't either.

Studley
August 2nd, 2006, 16:06
I'm not saying I won't love the next GTA, even though it'll be a carbon-copy with updated graphics. This is just trying too hard to stomp directly on GTA territory, even down to the same sort of setting as their last game.

(Actually the worst thing about last-gen GTA was the load times when going between islands and entering buildings, but Saint's Row seems to have eliminated them altogether - which can only be a good sign)

I have to say I enjoyed it, and I've been a GTA afficionado since the first one back on the PC.

It's not perfect, but game engine aside, I think it's more like GTA2 rather than any of the others, in that it's more about the 'respect' thing than any sort of plot driven mission structure.

It's not, like GTA, a targeted plot based on the character (whether it be Fido, Vercetti or CJ) but rather one in which you've created your own gang member and build your way to the top - think Top Spin's career mode, but with violence! ;)

I'd assume there'll be some sort of water transport in the final build, because that river looks far too tempting, and there were little piers. If there wasn't going to be boats, why bother with that at all?

I found the controls a little difficult at first, because I've gotten so used to using the RT to accelerate (thanks PGR3!) and so kept accidentally shooting people (eep!) but that aside, I enjoyed it.

It's not GTA, but it'll fill the gap nicely while we wait for the real deal to come out. Like buying shop-brand cola when you can't get Coke. Know what I mean?

And the radio stations will be fixed for the release, I'm sure. A demo is, after all, cut down by nature.

Peace ;)

Also I heard some complaints about not being able to fly: with this kind of textures and geometry that's nearly impossible without having to rely on the HD for caching..... and they're formally not allowed to do that considering there are Core owners out there.

Didn't stop Football Manager, though.

And is it Dynasty Warriors that requires something like 800mb for a save game? I can't remember, but if so, then that's a game that basically requires an HD to play in any sort of meaningful way.

MS should bite the bullet and admit the Core systems were a bad idea and offer Core owners a small discount on HDs just to get everyone on equal footing, IMO.

The controls really did it for me. GTA pissed me off to no end with that auto aim shit, i couldnt stand it. And besides, this game will have online play. It may be too gimmicky to enjoy for an extended period of time, but it should be fun.

Well, i myself was surprised by it, unlike everyone else form what i hear, i had no slowdown problems at all what so ever. Also the graphics werent bad, not amazing liek everyone wants them to be, but well done. And I have always find Gta to be over rated. Bad graphics, bad controls, and a storyline that ya really didn't care about. So i'm sure this may have a lot of simialarities, but i can't bash it because GTA was the pioneer. We wouldnt have call of duty if it wasn't for medal of honor starting it, yet call of duty has overtaken medal of honor.

But the 'core' is a pretty good idea if you think about it. You and I might like our HDD's but Joe Average just wants to play Madden 07 when it comes out. He doesnt need a HDD. And it puts the pricepoint 200$ under the 'core' version of the PS3.

I'm intrigued by what the multiplayer might offer. I guess it'll probably be carnage - like that GTA cheat which gives weapons to all the pedestrians - but there are some awesome possibilities. For instance, imagine a multiplayer mode where your team have to get a package from A to B. And the other team have to stop them by any means. You could whack the package in a vehicle and speed towards your destination, but then the opposition put up a roadblock and have guys with rocket launchers on the roofs of buildings... that would rule.

It's not going to be that cool though, is it? ;(

Just got OXM UK, which worryingly "only" gives it 8/10 (they tend to give all major games a big rating boost).

Plus points:
Fun multiplayer mode
Hugely detailed and very realistic city
Real-time physics add to the experience

Negatives:
Very derivative, poor sense of humour
No motorbikes or planes

Overall: 8/10: Solid, but lacks the intelligence of GTA

One interesting thing from the review that I didn't know about:

The best part of the game isn't a story mission at all. It's a challenge called Insurance Fraud, where the objective is to leap in front of speeding vehicles. The more injuries you sustain and the more witnesses you clock up, the more you earn in damages.

And there's a demolition derby mode \o/

kobejonez
August 3rd, 2006, 21:57
The Insurance Fraud thing sounds cool and the multiplayer could be a lot of fun. And as for Planes, Trains, Bikes & misc other vehicles, well get on the boards and nag the devs for downloadable content, if enough of us who are bothered ask for it they WILL bow to the demand. I'm gonna.

Studley
August 3rd, 2006, 22:16
I doubt that major gameplay additions like planes would be DLC, that's probably being saved for Saint's Row 2. I suspect they're missing for a reason - the draw distance / framerate probably drops loads when you're looking at that detailed a city from high up.

The difference between San Andreas and Saint's Row makes the difference between Halo 2 and Counter Strike seem like a dating sim and a racing game. It's not just the genre that's the same, it's almost every fscking move and detail. The fighting, the car jacking, the radio stations, the missions, the setting... It's almost embarasing.

I have the review build and although the game is really nice (expect no evolotuin and certainly no revolution!), I have to say with regret that de review build lacks graphical sweetness. Looks like they have downgraded the whole thing. The textures are low-resolution, lots of lightseffects are gone and the whole shiniess of the game has dissapeared. It's a very generic game now, with not much eyecandy as the demo. Very weird... but true.

The game still rocks tho, and I think it's the best GTA since... GTA. ;)

Any reviewer that gives a 10 for any game isn't even trying to be objective. A 10 is perfection and nothing is perfect. But in the end it all is personal opinion and I only believe my own opinion. A good review is a start but not per defenition good..

I like it, i've called the review on this, and will be trying my damn hardest to review it as a standalone title, and not make constant comparisions to GTA.

There will have to be a few obviously, but reading some reviews and opinions (*cough* Nino), i think people are treating it like its GTA or nothing. And I see no reason why a GTA fan couldn't enjoy this game...

Maybe the full game will change my mind on that, maybe not. I remain open-minded.

Studley
August 24th, 2006, 13:38
Look forward to the review, I understand you wanting to judge the game on its own merits and everything, but surely you must at least recognise the echoes with GTA:SA (open-scale drive/run/shoot "gangsta" environment), and I would be very interested to see some direct comparisons over why I should choose to play this rather than the cheaper and potentially more in-depth San Andreas in backwards-compatibility.

VerbalKint27
August 24th, 2006, 15:25
The comparisons included will be the importants one, can't distance it totally, you just can't. Even the devs have said they can't deny that GTA is a massive influence.

But thats not to say a copy can't compete or in some areas better that which came before it.

Its not in direct competition, not until GTA4 comes out, and i know that will beat this hands down, not even worried about the quality Rockstar will put out.

I've completed all the GTA's, and I enjoyed this demo, I'll see what the full game has to offer, from the demo it already has a better shooting system than GTA (one of GTA's few frustrations for me), early doors it appears to have a superior mission structure. Great physics. The driving pales in comparison, and there other things which I'll wait for my review to disclose.

Greg Kasavin at Gamespot is highly positive on the game:
Saints Row may look like just another Grand Theft Auto rip-off, but the rare quality of its action and presentation make it stand tall on its own merits.
Gamespot users vote 9.2 in 594 votes (!!!).

I LOVE SAINTS ROW!

Studley
September 24th, 2006, 20:02
Well I rented Saint's Row via that GameTart trial that was posted on the site a while back, and... it's OK I guess. The main story missions are really cheesy, their idea of "gangsta" is even worse than GTA's, I just skip the cutscenes and then try and work out what they want me to do (usually it's drive to point X, kill person Z).

One strange question: every time I start playing Saint's Row, it disconnects me from Xbox Live, and I can't reconnect to Live until I exit to the dashboard again. Does that happen for anyone else?

Zerodisorder
September 24th, 2006, 20:11

This is a total rip off of GTA but what the hell!
Do you class Pro Evo a copy of FIFA just because they are footy games?
Dont go by the demo, the full game needs to be played before passing coment.

Nino
September 24th, 2006, 22:03
Don't bother with the 'but pro evo and FIFA are similar too' bullshit, it's a retarded comparison.

Chris
September 25th, 2006, 00:00
What is a good comparison?

Nino
September 25th, 2006, 01:27
Grand Theft Auto 3 and Just Cause.
Ninja Gaiden and God of War.
Mega Man and Mario.
Half Life and Quake.
Far Cry and Doom 3.
All games in the same genre with way different art styles/settings/designs.'

(We've been through the whole SR vs GTA discussion a couple of times now and I think everyone knows my stance and everyone else's stances so lets not get into that. All I wanted to put across was that the whole 'but FIFA vs PES or Medal of Honour vs. CoD is the same too!' argument is flawed, you'll figure it out.)

Cage
September 25th, 2006, 01:36
A good comparison? Doom and Quake. Same sort of game, just like GTA and SR.
Quake was just like doom, set in a future setting with monsters to shoot at only with improved graphics and little enhancements here and there (jump anyone?). You had several guns to choose from and had to walk in small corridors. The main character in both games was a buffed up cool guy with a helmet on. Both games were great but shared most of the same qualities..

Just like Saint's Row is a good game on it's own although sharing story, gameplay and all other good things from the GTA franchise.

After playing it myself (own saint's row for a couple of days now) I must say I really like it. The similarities with GTA are a plus for me cause I liked GTA and thus like SR as a GTA clone with buffed up graphics and little enhancements here and there.. :)

Nino
September 25th, 2006, 01:45
Quake and Doom are both games made by id and Quake is more or less the spiritual succesor to Doom. Another flawed comparison, nice try though.

(Better example is Quake vs. Half Life. Half Life uses bits from the Quake engine IIRC and both are miles apart.)

Cage
September 25th, 2006, 01:55
Yes, both ID games but a lame excuse for the comparison flaw. Even though it was sort of a succesor, they didn't stop creating doom games. Quake 4 and Doom 3 were released at around the same time and became competitors. The story, small spaces, hero, gameplay etc. were still same ol' same ol' as I said in my comparisson.

A really really bad comparison is Half Life vs Quake because Quake was a brainless shooter and Half Life was revolutionary and the first one in its genre. It was the first FPS with a story that progressed in real time, unlike the brainless small corridor shooting after another in quake.. sorry nino..

Nino
September 25th, 2006, 09:35
Saying Quake rips off Doom is like saying Nirvana rips off Nirvana. Quake is made by the same artists as Doom and therefore it obviously looks the same and has the same setting. It really is a flawed comparison. Oh and Doom 3 and Quake 4 were not released around the same time :D. Nice try though.

Half Life vs Quake on the other hand is a fine comparison, both are first person shooters, the amount of enemies and puzzles doesn't take away from that at all.

Sorry Cage, you lose.

Cage
September 25th, 2006, 10:14
Only on your mind, Nino.. Only in your mind.. ;):P

(still can't believe you're comparing Quake with Half-Life8)7 :+ )

Oh, just one more thing.. I'd rather buy a game from a company that 'steals' the formula from another company and improves it here and there (SR) then buy a game from a company that makes an almost exact copy of the first success (doom) and make it a new franchise (quake) so they can cash in some more.. That's rippin' of the customers.. although I don't mind it at all. If the game is good, its good imho.. fini. :+

Nino
September 25th, 2006, 10:48
I fucking hate Doom and Quake both evenly because of their boring bland art. The only one I did like was Q3 because of the great multiplayer but the rest were boring and I too rather play SR.

Annoyingly I'm getting quite into this :(

The storyline is shit, but there's a hell of a lot to do, the activities are crazy fun. And unlocking all the achievements will take AGES. I've got it on rental at the moment but I might end up buying it, the 360's gonna bankrupt me I reckon...

I'm having a lot of fun with the Hitman activity. Just scrolling through a hood, looking for your target, staking out etc. I think I'll do all the Hitman missions before I go back to the regular story missions. Snatch is great as well.

That said: I'm a bit bored with the city, as expected. I spent most of my time in GTA doing stunts, exploring etc. I'm not as compelled to do that in Saints Row but that might be because Saints Row has those neat activities. Just hope this game stays interesting after I finish all those missions...

Studley
October 2nd, 2006, 14:30
I haven't done much in the Hitman activity yet, just been to Chinatown and got my list of targets. How do you actually find them? I know it tells you roughly which area they are in, but they don't appear as a target on the radar do they?

Nino
October 2nd, 2006, 14:42
They do, you'll see a little cross-hair on your minimap if you've chosen a target (start -> info -> activities -> hitman). Be sure to kill them with the specific weapon they require. Also, they don't always show up in the district the game tells you for some sadistic reason.

You have to do activities (Hitman, Chopshop, Hijack, Escort, Trafficking) to get respect.

I've done all my chopshop and hitman missions now, I'm at the last missions for the Los Carnales en the last one for the Vice Kings :)

edit: Ugh, worst ending in a game ever, be sure to save before you start the last mission.

Studley
October 8th, 2006, 20:07
Yes I'd completed enough activities, but I worked out what it was - there's a certain point where no more missions will appear until you take over all of the strongholds. Once you do that, the last few missions open up.

Finished the main storyline (I think? I'm just onto some police chief bonus missions or something), but there's still a lot of gamerpoints to be had so I think I'll play this for some time to come yet.

Nino
October 8th, 2006, 20:46
Stud; be careful with those 'bonus missions' and save before you get one that starts near a yacht, be sure to save before that one. That's the one where you get the worst ending in a game ever.

Studley
