View Full Version : My Xbox360 wireless controller is suddenly dead

Ok, I was playing Texas hold em Poker last night in multiplayer when everything just locked up, I didnt think anything of it so turned off my 360 and then turned it back on. When it had loaded up I noticed that my wireless controller didnt seem to be working properly. It turned on the 360 fine by using the jewel button but when I got to the dashboard the controller was just dead. I looked down and the lights around the jewel were flashing as if the 360 hadnt recognised the controller, so I tried all the methods of binding the controller to the 360 using the button near the memory card slots and also on the controller itself. Well this didnt work and now my fancy wireless controller is only useful as a paper weight.

Im really frustrated by this and have checked out numerous websites and found nothing. I was just wondering if anyone here had had this problem? Its quite worrying that a nice controller can be killed in less than a second by the 360 crashing. :-(

silly question time, you've checked the batteries I suppose???

we got 4 wireless controller in my house and none of them have died.

It was charging while I was playing as I have the play and charge kit. So its not the batteries. Ive only got one wireless controller and I'm a little bit worried if I buy another that wont work either as it might be something to do with the 360, although my wired controller works fine. I just much prefered the wireless.

You know that you need to press the connect buttons on 360 and controller simultaneously?

Strange... sounds a little like a situation I had yesterday, also when playing poker, also with plug-and-charge plugged in. Just a coincidence though I think.

The console was off but the controller was plugged in and still charging, I pressed the Guide button to switch the console on, all the lights came on briefly on the controller but the 360 didn't come on. I just tried again by holding the Guide button down, and then it came on as normal.

That's more just a story about me being thick though.

Do you mean literally at the exact same time? I pressed the one on the 360 first and then straight away pressed the one on the controller and vise versa but it wasnt at the exact same time. :'(

Well no there's a grace period of a minute or so that they are looking for eachother ;)

I'd try a couple of batteries in the original compartment just to try out whether the bat pack is at fault.

Turn everything off.

Turn the 360 on by its main power button (the one on the console itself). Wait for it to boot into your dashboard. Hit the connect button on the back off the controller (beside where the play and charge wire connects to the pad) then press the one on the console and wait until player 1 slot lights up on the console and the pad.

If that don't work cry.

Thanks, I'll try both of these ideas when I get home, it did actually make me almost cry out of frustration last night. Im stuck using my stupid wired controller now. :*

Studley - this is what was causing me to keep logging in and out last night when you messaged me. :(

I allmost cried out of frustration too. I was getting these on messages every few seconds too :+

PS: Did you unplug you wired controller when you were trying? 'cause if the wired one has ocupied slot 1 and the wireless is also trying to be number one it could cause a conflict.. So shutdown the whole shabang and try Glovners tip with only the wireless connected.

It could also be a software error of some kind. Maybe it's stuck somewhere due to the reset.. Take off the HDD and give the machine a factory reset.. That should do the trick (if it isn't broken ofcourse)

Good thought on the factory reset too... it might just have some registration stuck that won't allow it to find the controller.

I kind of had a weird battery issue last night while I was playing Texas.

It flashed at me like it was telling me to charge the battery, but when I did it was on there for 5 minutes, and it was done. I don't get it.8)7

No, i dont know how to do a factory reset though so havent tried that. If someone could tell me how to do that it would be much appreciated?

I contacted Microsoft tech support but they were no help at all.

Factory reset is in the System blade, says something like "Reset everything to default settings".
