Reggie: Wii makes $$$ immediately ' '

Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime said during a recent interview that the Wii will be profitable “out of the box”.

“We will make a profit on the entire Wii proposition out of the box — hardware and software… That really is a very different philosophy versus our competitors.”

Microsoft has said their Xbox360 loses money on every console sold, and industry analysts think that Sony is certainly loses money on the $600 PS3. But it’s of no surprise that Nintendo will be making money on Wii when it launches, same thing happened with the GameCube vs. PS2 and Xbox.

The main reason the Wii can turn profits from day one is of course the price of Wii hardware. Most of it is built on existing GameCube technology, and is therefore far cheaper, but also less powerful console than its counterparts. ' '

God this is awfull i mean, i rather support microsoft on this one then nintendo.
microsoft and Sony loosing big bucks on this one,but seems like nintendo are the one ones that can easily get away with this and nobody is making a big deal out of it.

It better be, it's the most expensive Nintendo console to date after Nintendo talked about aggressive pricing.

The console has cheap last-gen hardware (no HD support etc.) so the fact that it's only $50 cheaper than the core 360 was a huge letdown. I was excited for Wii and I didn't expect it to be much cheaper than $199. I know it's only a $50 difference between $199 and $249 but it is the difference between the standard Nintendo price and $50-cheaper-than-a-360.

And don't get me started on $60 controllers....

Ninty's philosophy is just a different one. They've got neither technology nor budget to play in the same league as Sony and Microsoft, so they chose actively to create their own league by not competing on technology (l33t gfx and sound) but on gimmicks. And yeah for the time being the Wiimote seems to be a gimmick that's catching on :)

But now Ninty is playing in the same league as MS, price-wise.

Well "close", but I don't consider the Core crap a true alternative :P

It is for most casual gamers and that's the market Nintendo is aiming for.

It - cannot - save - games.

Until the core pack gets a memory card standard it's crap and costs $340 instead of $300.

Casual gamers don't like to save their games. :P

The core already dropped to $280 I thought? Not having a memory card packed in is retarded but remember that it used to be the standard. PSX, PS1, Dreamcast, Gamecube all don't have packed in mem-cards (IIRC).

Gamecube comes with a standard 59 blocks card right? At one point I had 3 cubes and plenty of memory cards :P

Nino
