My mate wants to return his 3 red lights of doom to a retailer rather than MS. He doesn't have the receipt, and wants to take it back to a different retailer than that which he bought the 360 from in the first place. What do you guys think are his chances of that working?! Assuming it was all boxed?

Alternatively, if he buys a new 360, then puts broken 360 in the fresh new box, with a receipt, will he get his money back by doing that?!

as long as the store employs monkeys/apple trees to work the customer service counter then he should be able to switch systems in the new box.

I would say, no chance. Even if it was the same store, without a receipt you would find it difficult. Ironically MS is probably the best answer in this case, because they can track the console by serial number etc, why doesn't he want to do that? It doesn't take very long, particularly in the UK - when I had mine replaced, the whole process (from me sending my console away, to the new one arriving) took five days.

Only if you're very very lucky. A lot of retailers will still refer you to MS. Even if you did manage to return it, when it made it back to MS they'd notice the serial numbers on the box and console didn't match, might get traced back to you somehow, I wouldn't bother.

What serial on the box? The box has an opening through which you can exactly see the sticker on the back of the 360 with the serial code. The box itself is generic.

If you take it back to a place where they also sell bacon, they'll take the xbox back.

walmart ftw.

oh my i fear for my poor 360 if its happening to all of you guys now. I say he sends it to microsoft because its their fault for giving him a faulty console.

dontthink he will have any luck at a store without a receipt plus a new one comes with a different serial so they would problably know about it too.

as your legal advisor i say he gives it to microsoft and maybe get another hd and controller too for some profit ? :)

or send back the broken one without a hard drive , then the replacement comes with a hard drive .

he then moves on to selling a perfect new 360 and an extra hard drive , plan of a genius . :P

just hope they didnt scan the barcode serial number on the 360 when it was bought as theres a little flap on the box that enables then to scan them without opening the package.

well usually if you look sad when taking it back anyone believes you so im sure your mate could easily get past that . at worst he could avoid that game shop forever after. great thing about london right , you could use a different games shop everytime cos there's so many .

My first xbox last December 05 stopped working completely because the disc drive stopped reading disk's. It was less than 2 weeks old and Curry's the retailers tried everything in their power to get me to call MS support rather than have me return my console back to the store!!! It was during a period of high demand so I guess they wanted to profit on the last remaining 2 in store rather than replace one and have to send one back. But it took a 2hr protest before I was finally given another xbox360 which they suggested I walked out of the store with it in a black bag as not to be seen by anyone who could steal it. I bought my first console from the internet and was able to (eventually) get it swapped in a store because all sold consoles have their serial numbers logged, so the store knows if you bought it or not. All the store has to do in your case is check with the store you did buy it, so long as you have ID that you are who you are then YES they should swap it with out a receipt. Not having a receipt doesn't mean your rights as a consumer are forfeited when they would have had buying procedures in place anyway.

buy a new one. see if the Serial number is on the receipt. it the number is not on the receipt switch the consoles out and take the old one back and keep the new one. If the number is on the receipt then just return the new one to get your money back

This was what mine did. Had to take it back to the store (had the extended warranty through the store), but the thing that really sucks: they had to send it off to be repaired which will take from 10 to 60(!!!!) days.

So hopefully I'll be playing games before Christmas. :'(
