well the 360's have had major problems with running hott, and i cant even imagine what the ps3 is gonna do with that much electicity heating the place up. I think they will fry unless playstation/sony made a very efective cooling system. I am guessing they have it under control tho.

You're hoping they have it under control. Everyone says the PS3 is amazingly quiet, so I'm just waiting for PS3 death news to come out from one blowing up.
Everyone seems to forget that Microsoft didn't want the heating issues. They thought they ironed all the problems out, we obviously all know that wasn't the case. So to say "Sony's making SURE no heating problems are going to happen with the PS3, unlike Microsoft!" Is extremely wrong and naive. They'll try their hardest to make sure nothing happens, but no one's ever sure. i.e. Microsoft.

Do you have any solid source? Because I don't believe one thing about it consuming 380w.

and its an internal power supply, dissipate that amount of heat is going to take some doing, will be interesting to see the amount of DOA's.

that is an insane amount of power its uses!!! I guess they havent heard about global warming in Japan yet ;)

Japanese are NUTS about gloabal warming and power consumption. Don't use dryers and are super, super pissed if you leave anything consuming electricity on. If they know the PS3 consumes that much, they might reconsider (no joke).

Hot on the heels of a profit nosedive and a slashing of Japanese PlayStation 3launch numbers, Sony has been dealt another blow--a thumbs-down from gaming guru Nolan Bushnell.
The industry veteran, who founded Atari back in 1971 along with Ted Dabney, has given Red Herring his personal opinion on the way the next-gen console war will play out. He's "curious" about the Wii, likes the Xbox 360, and has a few choice words to say about the PlayStation 3.
Bushnell called Sony "arrogant and capricious" in the interview. "I think Sony shot themselves in the foot... There is a high probability [the PS3] will fail. The price point is probably unsustainable," he said, referring to the $499 and $599 sticker prices of the system. "For years and years Sony has been a very difficult company to deal with from a developer standpoint... They have also historically had horrible software tools."
Other points of interest from the interview included his statement that Atari was now a shadow of its former self, and had no "meaningful" part in today's gaming world. The Atari name, once synonymous with the revolution in home gaming, was adopted by French company Infogrames in 2003.
Bushnell has founded more than 20 different companies throughout his career, and his latest business venture is the uWink Media Bistro in Woodland Hills, California, a restaurant where you can play video games at your table

Hmm it's quite easy to rant about what Sony's doing. We'll have to just wait and see what'll happen with it and don't judge too soon. They have announced quite a bunch of cool stuff that I definitely want to check out.

Yes it is! meh i like xbox 360 and never got used 2 the PS controller and i cannot afford or justify over £400 on a console with no games :p esp since my friend at Lionhead told me he didnt really see a difference between the PS3 dev kit and the 360 dev kit meh its all about personal choice i just hope sony dont got bust :P that would suck who would we have to argue with

This thing is freaking huge! All that together is a giant fan and heatsink this biggest i've ever seen and i build and design computers.

If its power usage is really as high as 380 watts i hope it does keep the thing cool otherwise there will be lots of dead systems.... which is not what sony need happpening
well im not even gonna see one till some point next yr :(

Uhm, why is 380 watts such a big deal when the typical gaming PC can easily top the 450 or even 500 watt mark?
Rival24
November 13th, 2006, 13:09
A 'typical' gaming PC doesn't hit 450 or 500 Watt. But when you have a very highend graphics card like Nvidia's Geforce 8800GTX you might get close :P
Pedle Zelnip
November 13th, 2006, 13:21
Yeah but my point is that 380 watts isn't uncommon for a gaming PC and they don't usually catch fire/explode/melt so why is it so shocking/alarming that the PS3 uses that much juice?

It will probely use 380 watts while running at 100%, but thats not likely at all, it will probely only use about 50% of its power at any one time, unless you will be using it for serious bench marking, but thats not likely.
UKJAY

...probably just enough power to keep it going until the warranty runs out

Isn't that exactly the same for most systems though? The peak usage of the power supply has to be 'more than enough' to facilitate the whole system running top-gear simultaneously: so CPU, GPU, HD and Optical all working their asses off. Which still leaves the 360 being able to cope with a 160W PS?
ps. Welcome to the forum :)

dont forget that the PS3 wont be using all of that power all at once. It will probably use about half that.

i thought the 360 power supply was 205w?

March 1st, 2007, 17:36
I may be a bit thick at this, but dont voltage and ampage count in some way as well?
If this is basically true Sony are going to have a few problems. The 360 already eats the most wattage of any console so far and the ps3 might double it - I can see a few parents looking at their power bills in a few months and hitting the roof at an extra £200/$400 a year.

I had mentioned this in another post once, but reading this thread, and reading about the cooked eggs on the Xbox 360, I think I will mention it once more.
Eggs will coagulate (cook) at around 63°C (or about 145°F for you Americans). But the process can start as low as 35°C (95°F). Knowing this we can now determine what else can cook an egg.
Hot pavement on a summer day (can hit 40°C)
Xbox 1 (max heat of 45°C)
Playstation 2 (max heat of 39°C)
Most home amplifiers (max heat of 45°C)
Average home computer (approx. 40-50°C)
Average Gamer's computer (approx. 50-80°C)
So you see, you can pretty much coagulate an egg on just about anything with direct heat. Hope you like your yolks runny thou.
