View Full Version : I played a PS3 today

Today I was at Toy R'Us and saw a PS3 dealio set up. Watched a dude play DMC for a bit then I hoped on. I played the demo of DMC4 and it sucked. The 1st wave of 360 games look way better. There are jaggies out the ass on every demo I played. It needed MAJOR AA. I played GTHD too, and it looked pretty good, but the rowds were lame, and it had jaggies considerablly too. It reminded me a lot of PS2 and how unsmooth it always looked. GTHD's crowds were pretty much frozen, and made creppy, robot movements. There were a lot of model repeats as well. The backgrounds look better in screenshots, its like they just photoshoped a piture back there, and it looks bad (really out of place). The only thing I like about the PS3 was the menu, yet it didn't work well at all during games. When logged out of game however, it ran really smooth and was easy to use despite being in Japanese.

The controller: Omg. Ommfg. I did not think they could have made the DualShock worse (it wasn't great at all when compared to the Controller S, and not shit to the 360 pad or even Gamecube controller). The Sixaxis feels cheap, really cheap. I thought about how I could have easily smashed it inmy hands. It has a better grip than the DualShock, but I immediately didn't like the way it felt, and after over an hour of using it I still thought of how crappy it was. The worst part is the L2 and R2 though. Worst. Triggers. Ever. Wow. Really, really bad. Like, super-duper-uber-bad. Not any ounce of good in them at all. Man. PS3 itself isn't very sexy close up. Seems pretty big, like, obese. Xbox 1 style. Too bad the Wii demo station wasn't up yet. I did get some good playtime on lost planet though, so my trip to Toys R'Us wasn't a COMPLETE let down.

I'm just giving my honest opionion. I WANT to like the PS3, you know what I mean? I just can't justify it.

DMC4 UGLY!? WHAT?! Surely you're not talking about this (http://images.playsyde.com/gallery/public/4111/979_0005.jpg) game?

Yes. That game. I played it twice, and I'm convinced all screenshots were doctored because there were so many jaggies. Plus, looked like an Xbox game. Terrible water. Flat. Completely flat with no movement. The ocean is apparently a very big canvas of grey. Plus when you look at the sun over the ocean, the point were the water and sky meet made me sick. So, so much AA needed in that game. GTHD really did look good, but in a strange way. Those weird backrounds (pictures glued onto worse graphics) and robot people. Cars handled realistically however.

I'm not joking at all, the controller is really not good. I'm super cereal. Only thing that was improved is the actually material maybe, I could tell it would stay in your hands more firmly, though I've never really dropped a dualshock. It didn't have that smoothy, shinyness like the dualshock. For example. Take the material from the PS2 (actual console) and put it on the Sixaxis. They basically switch the controller material and console material from last gerneration the other way around this time.

The game's not gone gold so it wouldn't worry about it too much.

acromyth
November 7th, 2006, 15:34
I'm not an expert, but it makes me worry about the graphics card. ALL the demos had bad jaggies, some worse than others (DMC was the worst by far). Are developers not utilizing any AA? Whats the deal.

I hope they remake the controller, those damn triggers.... fuck... because I'm not so much worried about the games (learning curve) as I am the actual controller.

+'s: Major quietness
nice menus, they are fast and simple
i felt up the ps3 a bit, and i couldnt feel too much heat, although I couldnt make it all the way to where the power was plgged in

-'s: for sure the controller
too many jaggies
can't get the menu to work well in-game
spiderman font is A LOT more apparent when actually looking a PS3 in the face

To be honest that screenshot does look "postprocessed" to me. There's a smoothing going on there that smells more like Photoshop than Pixel Shaders. Apart from that it'd even look fine with jaggies I think.

On the GPU itself, it's a wellknown public secret that it's less powerful than the 360's. The PS3's potential superiority is all in the Cell if it ever gets unleashed properly. As a programmer I'm skeptical of that though.

Curry; check the gameplay footage on Playsyde, the off-screen stuff from TGS. It looks even better in motion I think.

Exhibit A (streaming gameplay demonstration at TGS): http://playsyde.com/leech_3053_en.html
Exhibit B (streaming showfloor footage from TGS): http://playsyde.com/stream_3047_en.html
Exhibit C (streaming showfloor footage from TGS part 2): http://playsyde.com/stream_3048_en.html

I don't see any jaggies, I see one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen running in solid buttersmooth 60FPS.

I'm tired of Sony's bullshit.
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/images/sony_bullshit_anim4.gif
You may know Sony most readily as the company that recently recalled something on the order of every laptop battery ever made because of a small glitch (they explode). Then there was the "rootkit" debacle, where Sony secretly installed hidden bullshit on your computer. One of Sony BMG's presidents handled the situation with the delicacy of a gang rape with this quote: "Most people, I think, don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?" Good point, shit-head! And before that, Sony was known for its shitty optical drives in their PS2s, resulting in a class action lawsuit. The word "shitty" in the previous sentence is a bit misleading, since I also use the word to describe Renée Zellweger's life, and having to void your warranty by adjusting a cog to fix a misaligned laser inside your PS2 is slightly shittier.

Not content with the reaming they give consumers with their shoddy products and condescending attitude, Sony determined that it didn't have enough bad press, so they decided to wield their giant gnarled cock of corporate greed again, this time training it on a small-time import shop called "Lik Sang." Lik Sang was a haven for nerds who wanted to import games and systems from other countries. It turns out that Lik Sang broke some major laws that not only earned them the scorn of Sony, but pissed Sony off to the point where they sued Lik Sang into oblivion. So what was this grave infraction committed against Sony that not only threatened the very foundation of this giant multi-national corporation, but warranted destroying the lives and careers of a group of dorks running a gaming website? Simple: they committed the mortal sin of selling Japanese PSPs to European gamers. Oh no! Not that!

When I read the law suit, I did a double take to make sure I read it correctly. Sony is suing to prevent people from selling PSPs? Great move, morons! Because if there's anything Sony needs right now, it's fewer people buying PSPs. In fact, PSP sales are part of the reason Sony expects to lose $1.7 billion dollars in their gaming division by March. That means that I and anyone else who makes any money at all between now and March (or at least manages not to lose more than $1,699,999,999.99) will officially make more money than Sony's gaming division. I rule.

This isn't the first time Sony bullied a gaming website for selling PSP imports. In June of 2005, Sony sued a website called ElectricBirdLand (Sony literally hired men in dark sunglasses to deliver the papers to the defendant, because Sony is insecure about the size of its penis), stating that the sale of Japanese PSPs to the UK could hurt their ability to exploit the "excitement and anticipation of the market." Hey Sony, you know what else could help you exploit the excitement and anticipation of the market? The PSP not sucking:

http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/images/psp_bs4.jpg

Sony's strategy towards portable gaming seems to be to take the same shitty first generation Playstation games that weren't great to begin with, and make them portable so now we can take an example of Sony's utter-inability-to-stop-sucking with us everywhere we go. Nobody wants to buy movies in your stupid proprietary format, assholes!

So why does a company that relies on consumer satisfaction and brand recognition treat its fans with such contempt? Because...

Sony hates you.

Sony would love nothing more than to see you and your family suffer. Sony is like that psycho-ex who you had a few good times with, but was too clingy and the sex got boring. Now it's over and Sony is still stewing about it by leaving you voice mail asking for another chance and promising it "can change."

Tough shit Sony. We've moved on. We're dating your younger, hotter sister, Wii. Even your fuglier step-sister, Xbox 360, looks hotter than you do. At least she's been around the block a few times and knows how to turn tricks. You've got nothing, and it's going to stay that way until you stop being a crabby old cunt.

414,770 people are tired of Sony's bullshit.

Having played at PS3 kiosks many times in the past 2 weeks, I never once felt that the controller was as "cheap" as you claim. The controller itself is small in my hands, just as the 360's (also the reason why I used the "Duke" back on the big black box) but saying you could smash it in your hands may be a bit of an exaggeration. While I did not get a chance to try DMC4 or even watch a video of it on the hardware, I did play both NHL 2K7 and Marvel: UA. The two games looked about equal in comparison to their 360 counterparts (Marvel seemed to have more lighting effects on the PS3 but its framerate had some issues and didnt appear to be as sharp) The second complaint I could probably contribute to the LCD they had used - which is inferior to my home entertainment system that I had played the games on.

The new york times doesn't really like the PS3 :(
An article in the New York times slams Sony's PlayStation 3 console and claims that the product is unrefined and not ready for public release, all this after having tried the console for over 30 hours and having played 13 games on it.

The article in the New York times suggests that Sony rushed the console to market in an attempt to get some holiday action but may be selling the consumer short in order to do so. The story begins by stating that the PS3 ...delivers gorgeous graphics. Only to go on and add that ...they are not discernibly prettier than the Xbox 360’s.

Seth Schiesel, the New York times editor behind the story, then moves on to a straight-forward comparison of the XBox 360 and the PS3 and claims that the X360 is user friendly and features an intuitive UI while the PS3 lacks refinement and some basic gear including the high definition cabling required to connect the console to a TV that supports the technology. The comparison continues to find fault with Sony's console and the way its controllers sync and even mentions the inability of the PS3 to allow players to listen to their own music while playing games.

The criticism of the console goes on to mention the Sony online experience which is also presented as unrefined, astonishingly, you can’t download in the background while you go do something that’s more fun (like play a game). The story however, does praise the online experience in, the quite excellent, Resistance: Fall of Man.

The criticism of Sony's console goes on and on and the gist of the story seems to be that the shortage of consoles may actually help Sony as it needs more time to refine its UI and the overall PS3 user experience. A lot of horsepower but no seats may be the expression that best describes Sony's next-generation offering.

Good man, stick to your opinion and convictions. If you played it and thats how you feel then thanks for letting me know, anyway I still ain't even going to consider one until it drops in price anyway so at least they have time to actually get things working.

Well, I finally saw a playable PS3 at Best Buy, and I sa a kid playing ir and it looked pretty good. It was running Motorstorm, and the kid was pritty intent to keep playing it, so I walked around came back and saw it was open for play, grabbed the controller and what do ya know the PS3 was frozen. So i looked to my right and there was a Xbox360 playing Gears perfectly. It made me feel good about being a 360 owner :D

Motorstorm didn't freeze on me. It doesn't really make me jealous, but I just wish the Xbox 360 had something that looked like that game. The draw distance alone makes it look pretty great. It doesn't quite look like the CGI that Sony put out at E3, but it's getting close.

Yeah, I got to play Motorstorm... and 3-4 other games. genji? ;o

@ The 3-4 other games I played:
All shit. Graphics weren't anything amazing. Decent I would say. There are far better graphics on the 360 and far worse. The games themselves sucked ass and I feel like I wasted 45 minutes on them (I was waiting for my alignment to be done across the street on my car) I mean, I had absolutely nothing to do for an hour and a half so I played PS3 and wished I was playing 360.

@ The controller
The controller isn't too bad. Didn't feel too light to me. Felt a tiny bit on the cheap side, but I wouldn't go as far as you acro.

@ Motorstorm
I won't lie. I was very impressed (at first). When my car exploded... Indeed I could see my stage 2 flywheel go flying across the screen in glory. I was very impressed with the graphics of this game. The game itself, was a perfect Demo game though. After 10 minutes of blowing myself up and such... I actually had to play the game... which sucked ass. The game got boring very quickly and I quickly turned my attention away from the PS3 to the 360 stand a few feet away. I spent the next 30 minutes beating some kid's ass in Table Tennis and had more fun than the entire time I spent playing the PS3.

Disclaimer: I'm not a 360 fanboy (yet). I just got my 360 like a week ago. I had a PS2 and a PS1 and a N64.

Motorstorm and its hype reminds me of Hydro Thunder Back in the day on Dreamcast. It's fun 'boost' based racing game, but at the end of the day has no real depth, it's more of a 'gee a pretty racing game' niche title. I can't wait to try it, but I know I'd only ever get so much out of it :)

Sorry about the mutilated asshole thing haha, it's not THAT bad, but damn DMC could have been better. Played Motorstorm 2 days ago and wow, looked great. Not that FUN to play, but it was nice to look at, but looking good isn't what matters (we SHOUlD all realize that by now). Those triggers guys, come on. Jesus they're bad. REALLY REALLY BAD. At least the joysticks are better, but they should have stuck with the original triggers at least. I can't believe they realeased it. Did anyone even hold that thing before they realesed it? I don't know about you, but I'm kind of feeling pretty good about all the people who I told a year ago that the PS3 wouldn't be as awesome as they were expecting.

Who really cares about playing games on a PS3 ? That thing is going to be the next big allround mediacenter for the HD age. Linux already runs nicely on it and even with just bitmapped gfx access and no 3d functions it won't take long until a cell optimized ppc linux version and a mediacenter application developed for it will be out for the taking. That's how sony will outsell the 360 in the long run this generation. They DID watch and learn from what M$ did with the xbox and what happend to it :)

That thing is a damn cheap powerhorse of a mediaplayer that can play games too (I'd see that as a bonus feature). The ability to run a 2nd OS (linux) from the beginning as an integrated feature is brilliant because that is what ppl actually want so they can view downloaded hd/sd content, dvd's and hd movies with just one box that is easy to setup.

With that in mind, I don't quite see why fanboys fight. Both consoles have a diffrent purpose. Well, at least for me they do :) I have my 360 for games and I'll buy a ps3 for linux/mediacenter application and maybe a few games.

Having Linux is nice (and probably the system's weak point (no pun intended) for exploits but that's a whole other discussion) but I buy my consoles for games, not for fancy media centre stuff.
