I just purchased the HD-DVD addon and the picture produced is just amazing.
I have a Sony 50" LCD TV that can only go to 1080i, but when I played King Kong and then compared to my original King Kong DVD the difference was glaringly obvious.
However, I played my original King Kong DVD in the HD-DVD drive as there was some mention of the HD-DVD drive upconverting DVDs and I could not see that. As a matter of fact I could see my TV switching modes. Can anybody confirm more about the HD-DVD drives ability to upsample regular DVD output?

No I think it is the 360s built in DVD drive that upscales.

It's the 360 itself, it wouldn't matter which drive you used. You will only get DVD playback upscaled if you are using VGA cables though; for legal reasons the 360 will not upconvert DVD over Component. Lame I know... component cables seem to produce a much better quality picture on my tv.
Looks like you're stuck with HD-DVD bud, there is no going back :X O-)

I am in no way disappointed with my purchase so far. I bought Batman Begins last night so that I would have more than one HD-DVD to do comparisons with. I also readjusted my television, and let me tell you there is nothing like a TRUE HD picture. Will try and do some captures for show.

Ok, NOW I'm jealous. Batman Begins is the best action movie since the Matrix. Together, they are easily the top 2 (noncop / robber) 'extraordinary' action movies of my lifetime. I guess matrix takes the claim 'the star wars of my life' , but jeez... Batman Begins is an unbelievably amazing movie.
Blows spiderman/ xmen / every comic book movie EVER out of the water. Isn't even in the same ballpark as other comic movies. Leaps and bounds ahead.

I was going to wait until the release of an HDMI cable 'cause I can only get a 1080i picture as well over component. It doesn't look like HDMi will be comming out for some time so I went ahead and got the addon last night and must admit that I am addicted to HD. I watched Kong and went back to Best Buy to gte another, then another HD DVD. Its a nice break from grind of the games from time to time.
Now please come out with the HDMi so I can get the 1080p.

I guess the 360 can also play HD footage from an external USB 2.0 HDD? As in the fall update video playback from USB devices is supported?

From what I understand the video playback is only supported from a network, either another computer or XBL. There isn't much support for add ons through the USB ports like a keyboard, mouse or an external HDD. M$ wouldn't make any $ from thier 20gb HDD for $99 if you could hook up a 60gb third party for $100.

I think video should work from a USB HD, it's just the "native" stuff like profile saving, demo's, B/C updates etc. that "requires" an MS-sanctioned drive.

For those of you who got the HD-DVD drive, you can purchase HD-DVD's at Buy.com or DVDPlanet.com right now and if you use Google Checkout, they give you $10 of an order of $30 and $20 off an order of $50. You can have multiple GC accounts as they are tied to your email address. I already got Mission Impossible Collection, Fast & The Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Batman Begins. Great drive, everyone that has an HD TV should pick one up.
Also there's a Circuit City $40 off of $200 printable coupon found here: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2405572&postcount=249 that can get you the HD-DVD drive for $160 + Tax.

Anyone got the wireless adaptor plugged into the back of the Add-On?
I have, and it never boots the adaptor. I have to manually unplu the adaptor then re-plug it in to the back of the add-on for it to turn itself on. It's fucking annoying!

Be wary of Buy.com.
They've taken a real hit on the CS lately. Notice on the site there are no phone #'s in clear view to contact them.
When I ordered my wireless headset, it said ships in 2-3 business days. It took 6. Not to mention it took nearly 2 weeks to arrive to my house via USPS, whereas Overstock.com sent me my girlfriends Xmas present from Nebraska in 4 business days, also USPS.
The box was badly damaged and smashed around, luckily MS put their accessories in those (nearly) indestructable packaging.

Personally, I've had a lot of great transactions with buy.com recently (4-5 in the past 3 months or so) ... each time the Google Checkout discount has given me a great price, and the shipping was been quick (& I'm a cheap-ass -- I always select the free shipping).
I will weep when that Google Checkout bonus goes away, as it's been very good to my pocketbook ...
Just my 2 cents ...

Hold on, back to the namesake of the thread.
Am I to understand that the 360 does not upscale DVD's because I am running it through the components?
Why in that case does the information on my TV confirm it is displaying the picture in 720?

From what I recall. The X360 upscales DVD's to 480p only. Unless one of these recent XBOX updates changed that recently, beats me.
