Default Halo Combat Evolved

Ok, so as I've mentioned on here before. I'm new to the Halo universe. I didn't have the original Xbox as I was a PS2 guy. When I got the 360 a little over a year ago I never really thought much to try the series out. Since I am getting Halo 3 for Christmas I figured this is a good chance to go back and see how the series came along.

I went to Best Buy and picked up a copy of Halo Combat Evolved for $10 ($25 at Gamestop! Hell no!). For right now I've only played the first section up to where you land on this planet or whatever. So far I like what I see. It's a shame I didn't get to do this when it first started.

I will probably pick up Halo 2 at some point after this game since it seems like the supoprt is still there and TONS of people still play it online.

This makes me look even more forward to Halo 3!

I've both Halo2 & Halo3 and although Halo2 is good online from the very few tries I had... I couldn't look at the visuals/graphics at all in it's single mode story - all I saw was purple & grey, more purple & grey - a few stairs and a window - it was awful, but I should imagine the best of it's kind in it's day. I was tempted by the first halo just to have the full collection, but I wouldn't pay 1200 points for it on marketplace.

Halo suffers from sameroomitis. The entire series does.

Seriously, the seventh mission of Halo 3, it's so blatantly obvious.

That's the reason I bought it. $10 for un opened disc in case instead of $15 for a download that will take forever and take up alot of space.

Following the monitor around and figihting the flood toward the end of the first halo....seriously like 30 minutes of about 100 rooms that are all identical. It felt like trying to run up the stairs to get Bowser in Mario 64 when you don't have enough stars.

Hmmm...my house suffers from sameroomitis, as all rooms are similar in desgin, with only some furniture that is different. Now that I think about it, my work building suffers from sameroomitis as well, as each office is similar to the next. Hey, I just came back from the shopping mall, more sameroomitis, as each store were very similar in desing. The reality is that 99% of non organic structure do suffer from sameness. It is cheaper to desing and build that way.

I was also a PS2 guy for MOST of last gen.
I got the flu at the time, and borrowed my buddies Xbox (he didn't play it much, he said) and Halo:CE. I wanted to get better at it, because I didn't have it, and anytime we had a LAN party (what a bunch of dorks!) I'd get my ass handed to me.

After playing through it once, I was hooked, and bought my own Xbox a few days later. Kept the PS2 too....can't ever have enough game systems/DVD players in the house, can you?

The first one was GREAT at the time. It looks dated by today's standards, but the game is practically a relic at this point. Gameplay, well, it was then, and still is, some of the best mechanics in a game to date.

re: Sameroomitis.....(love that name, BTW)
I agree, big time. But it does make sense, considering that the game takes place on the halo ring, and we can presume the same building techniques were used throughout the constuction, no? Would the upper flooors of an office building be designed any different than the lower floors (in terms of general layout etc...)? Prob not. Why should the interior of the Halo look any different from section to section.

Just thinking about the unending wave after wave of flood..... I don't miss that part.

My advice, for what its worth:
If you missed this one way back when, pick it up today. You may not play through it fully (its old after all!!!) but it was a great game in its time, and is worth adding to your collections. The d/l service is good for some of the 'harder to find' titles, but if you can get this one in a case, you'll probably get it cheaper. It was a former GOTY, remember?

GOTY is usually pretty good, no matter what year.

Agreed. Cheaper and have the actual disc and case new and unopened? Alot better deal.

I might try to play through but who knows. I wouldn't mind learning the story behind everything. Although I don't really plan on waiting to play Halo 3 to get through the first two. I don't think I will want to hold off that long. If anything I'll play Halo 3 along side of this and eventually Halo 2 and then end up playing through Halo 3 again on a harder difficulty (like I did with COD4).

And even for obviously dated graphics... it isn't terrible or unplayable. I actually enjoyed playing through the ship and trying to get out so you can make your landing.

I wish I would've jumped on the Xbox train earlier. It would've been well worth it.

Ah. the good old Dukes. Built for man sized hands

PS/ my bigggest gripe about my new Blu-Ray player is the controller. That stupid thing actually hurts my hands after using to navigate Blu-Ray menus, I could not imagine using it to actually play a game.

very nice to see that halo revised editions are released very frequently. But the halo is loosing its original touch in other version of the game. the contrast of the game color need to be get less because eyes are paining by that graphics.
