Default The Nintendo Revolution is no more

It's now the Nintendo Wee... sorry, I mean 'Wii'.

Quote:
Nintendo's entry into the next generation video game console war has been called many things by many people, but now it has an official name: "Wii" — pronounced "we."

The official naming of the console, which had been code named "Revolution" for what a spokesperson calls its "disruptive nature," comes less than two weeks before the world's biggest industry-only video game trade show, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3.

"While the code name 'Revolution' expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer," read a statement from Nintendo of America Inc. "Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else."

Wii's double "I's" are meant to represent the unit's unique controller, which is broken into two parts. But the word itself is meant to conjure up a sense of inclusiveness.

"It's really not about you or me," said the statement. "It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything."

The new console's name is part of a broader strategy by Nintendo to introduce video games to a bigger audience.

"Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak," the statement read. "No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii."

But not everyone is convinced it's a strategy that's necessary.

"I was one of those people who were hoping they'd just leave it 'Revolution,'" said Brian Crecente, editor of game blog Kotaku and video game writer for the Rocky Mountain News. "I really think this boils down to Nintendo trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist."

Crecente says the name of a console has never affected the gaming community's capacity to enjoy — or revile — it, and he doubts the name will have an impact on someone who doesn't game.

Still, he's reserving judgment, he says, until the name's had a chance to sink in.
Yeah, I wish they'd just left it as Revolution, but then if I had my way then my games collection would include an Ultra 64, a Katana and a Dolphin...

Hahaha that is a terrible name, even worse than the alleged 'Go!' that was brought up a couple of weeks ago.

Edit : WWII?

Why are the code names better than the real name?

So the system is already behind the eight ball because of it's lower specs, questionable third-party support, and the fear of mostly novelty games. Then they name it "Wii?"

The Wii isn't trying to outperform the xbox 360 or the ps3 in specs, they're thinking outside the box and are going with new and different ways to enjoy interactive entertainment. The xbox360 and the ps3 can throw as many specs around as they want, but if they don't have the games that are worth playing for it, then it's worthless.

This next generation is soley about high-end graphics ystems. I mean of course, Nintendo is going to pull some new and innovative gameplay out of the hat. Nintendo does this each and every generation that comes fourth. I understand that Nintendo is for the kids and all, but Nintendo relies on their past reputations to much. Ever since Sony kicked them off of the corner with the Playstation, Nintendo just lost it. Speaking from a bussiness stand point, this is the wrong generation to come out with a console that will be driven by gameplay. This generation, people want graphics... and Nintendo will be once again left out.

I think you can be very mistaken there... I've seen the graphics, I heard the great sound effects, but who cares when the games suck? Or when they're too complicated for your friends to "jump in" and play?

I have a lot of friends who don't own a console, but like playing a game at my place once in a while. We tried CoD2, GR:AW, PGR3, DOA4, but all are games which need excercise to make it fun to play together. Because now it's too easy for me to beat them because the games take time to learn, controlwise and gameplay wise

But with Wii Nintendo will change this at last, we already had MarioKart, SSB:M, MarioParty, which are great games to play with novice gamers. They just grab a controller and learn instantly, within minutes.
Now with the new Wii controller it will become an even less barrier to play games together on an equal level regardless of experience (ofcourse a good and experienced player will still be better, but the equation of 'more game time = more advantage' does not apply here anymore)

So I say bring on Wii, and not just for kids (I am 26 years old, and really looking forward to this). Finally once again, since the days of SNES and Megadrive I can have fun in the same room again with friends who don't own a console.

As they say: it's about us together, Wii will change everything. The more I think of it, the better the slogan gets.

That sounds exactly like SONY this time around, with the hype machine that every single sony fanboy will buy into. As long as there's a plastic sony logo on the side of the console, it's better than anything that's available in their eyes.

Hmmm...

Nintendo was a 'evil' company in the 90's.
You had to pay them a lot to develop for it, and they screwed philips and sony, (ces 1992 or something).
They say that SNES game royalties were more than now PS2 developement.
Also that Ultra 64 was supposed to look like a SGI supercomputer. anyway.

In the end they got what they deserved. Neither the N64 nor the Gamecube were no1 like the other consoles were before them. Not even no2 in some cases, thanks to your beloved xbox

Some say they survived the N64 because of the gameboy/pokemon.

Wether this is true or not, i cannot confirm. It says on the internet.

On the inet it says also other things.
That Nintendo is the only company that makes money on the console hardware. This, offcourse is total bullshit.

Back ontopic: now everybody does like nintendo is a charity company that doesnt want to make profit, but make everybody happy, etc.
That the revolution is the best thing ever, even though nobody played it. And so on.

The xbox1 had more 'original' titles than the gamecube.
Even though this is fact, they want to make it look like the xbox1 has only fifa 2001 2002 2003, and need for speed 1 2 3 4 5.
They forget ninja gaiden, halo, splinter cell, project gotham, etc.
What did nintendo gamecube introduce?
that is correct, monkey ball, and a few other titles that nobody really knows. Oh pikmin is good.

And now everybody thinks that for years they make gaming a better world.

They even say that revolution online will be better than xbox live.

After the revolution is released, the bullshit will stop.

...And they will have the excuse that is was because the name sucked

A darn good excuse if you ask mii

Btw, phusebox makes a very valid point, but it seems that nobody is smart enough to respond to it.

Well, it is very nice that the games will be more accesible, that i can ask my mother to join in super mario tennis, or maybe golf.
But for me this is no advantage, because i can hold a controller and are used to pressing buttons really fast (aka winning in tekken *).
Another questing, do they want to play mario golf really easy? when they can sing or use their bodies to solve puzzels or things like that (ie eyetoy)

* for all you noobs out there

I don't think intelligence has a lot to do with people not responding to someone's forum post.

I think the Wii is a cute name. Nintendo has been good to me, as the only two systems i've ever owned were a Supernintendo and a Gameboy color.

So when did this turn into Nintendo bashing? They're behind in the technology race, that's obvious, but give them the chance to show their stuff and don't freak out just because the name sounds childish.

You may be surprised
