backward compatibility with PS3

One of my coworkers just bought a PS3 and was pissed cause it doesn't play PS2 games. My understanding was that its supposed to play all PS2 games and PS1 games. Is my coworker right, or is there something she isn't doing right? She bought the 40g one I believe.

The new ones have an emulator instead of the chip inside like the original models had. Maybe it needs to be updated for the backwards compatable games like the 360?

Also they dont have built in wifi... thats another thing some people forget when buying

The 40GB unit can NOT play Playstation 2 games. It does play Playstation 1 games though.

yeah I have the 60gig too thankfully... just it takes so fucking long to download and install updates

I normally do not post here, but since I did get my Blu-Ray player I found this interesting. My usermanual does indicate that it is backwards compatible with the entire Playstation library (both PS1 and PS2). I do not have any games for it, so I cannot test this out.

On a side note, it also indicates it has WiFi (but I connected it to my wired network anyway.

I will not argue till I get home and confirm if you are correct, or you are on crack.

But I can assure you, my documentation does indicate fully backwards compatible and WiFi enabled.

But to be honest, this is a moot point for me, as I do have it connected to the same router as my game console and I only use it to play movies.

Joystiq has a decent chart here. I don't understand why the 40Gig SKU can't support PS2 games with software, there still must be a tiny bit of hardware involved that they just didn't want to spend the money on. I'm happy I bought the 60Gig model when I did, my Ps2 was stolen a few years back and I never had a strong enough urge to replace it.

I took a closer look at my Blu-Ray player, and I can assured you a few things;
#1: It is the 40GB version model # CECHG01-98006
#2: It does have WiFi, I even connected to my network with it.
#3: The included play beyound booklet indicates the following;
Backwards Compatibility
As with any bold stride into the future, PLAYSTATION 3 system embraced its past. It is the only next-generation entertainment console on the market designed to be backwards compatible, which means you'll get immediate access to thousands of your favorite PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software titles.

But the quick reference manual indicates the following:
Games that can be played on this system
PLAYSTATION 3 format software: Can be played on this system *
PlayStation format software: Can be played on this system *
PlayStation 2 format software: Cannot be played on this system.
* Operation of all PlayStation software titles is not guaranteed.


The outside box also clearly indicates on 3 different locations, in two different languages (well the Canadian version does) in huge font size 8 that it will not play PlayStation 2 games.

I;m gladI didn't decide to pick up a PS3 awhile back. I almost bough one because of some of the good blueray movie deals they had, but Im glad I didn't. may still buy one down the road aways, but it would have to have backward compatibility. I want to try out the Aqua Teen Hunger Force game at some point, even though it probably sucks.
