Post PS3 v2.40 update

Anyone download this latest version? Looks interesting with the trophies etc. How will it match up to the ever popular and addictive ACHIEVEMENTS used on the Xbox 360?

Well perhaps if more games had Trophy support, I'd be able to tell you. As it is, I don't know!

I'll probably wait for update 3.0 as the PS3 comes on every 6 - 8 months

The ingame XMB is definitely a big improvement!

I'm not too sure about trophies right now. I'm not particularly pleased with the PS3 friends system and I don't really feel like checking other people's trophies out right now. Maybe if Home is finally available it'll be more interesting to see what other people have managed to accomplish. I only have one game for which I can get trophies btw, SSHD.

I have yet to download it. I will only get it if it allows for improved Blu-Ray playback. I got a PS3 to allow me to play Blu-Ray movies, and just Blu-Ray movies. Simple as pie.

Sony conned us into getting a PS3 as a cheap and reliable Blu-Ray player. Since this was a selling point for the PS3, you would expect that it could at least play my stupid movies without any problems, but no. The player always takes a good 30 seconds to a minute to even load a movie, and then at times it refuses to load the movie until I disconnect it from the Internet. Other times, the movie will freeze during playback for a few seconds. I know others that have the same problem with their grill shaped Blu-Ray players. What gives Sony?

If 2.4 fixes that, I am in.

Hmmm, I have to say I have never experienced any problems with Blu-Ray playback at all. I think it does a great job personally.

Does 2.40 include an anti-dust setting? Every bit of dust in the house seems to be attracted to it, I swear it used to be black. More seriuosly though, I wish that they would just release more decent exclusive titles than keep doing these updates.

I haven't had any blu-ray problems either, they all seem to load just as fast as a dvd.

I think more games should support trophies. Out of the list Sony released I want to say only 3 support trophies, and I'm assuming all three of those have updated the game so that they are actually achieveable. Warhawk is the only game I have that supports trophies at the moment. I would actually go back and play through Resistance if trophies were added. As of right now, I keep telling myself that I need to play some warhawk (bought it because my uncle recommended it and apparently plays it all the time) but can't bring myself to it. I'm too busy playing Lost Odessy or CoD4 on my 360 or diablo and starcraft on my pc.

So maybe I have a bad unit. Even last night I loaded a Blu-Ray disc on my newly updated 2.41 player, and the unit just sat there for close to a minute before it decided I wanted to watch a movie. Well it cannot be my unit, for a have a friend that also own this brand of Sony Blu-Ray player and experiences the same issue.

I am hesitant to sell it and purchase a real Blu-Ray unit for Sony is not done tinkering with the format and any Blu-Ray player could become obsolete is no time. Dang, I wish this format wars was decided by consumers and not business. I pulled out my Batman Begins on HD DVD and compared it to the Blu-Ray and the HD DVD was superior even thou the Blu-Ray version had an extra year to fine-tune the picture. RIP HD DVD.

It's a shame Sony have more weight in the movie world, I guess.

I've compared one or two movies, and there's really very little difference either way. I think it's because you're biased.

I never said there was a lot of difference, just that Batman Begins was better on HD DVD than on Blu-Ray (better colours and sharper image quality). I have seen occasion when Blu Ray was better, but as you indicated, the differences are very small.

I can be called biased towards games, but how can I be biased towards HD movies. There is only the one option.

But to be honest, I am not biased towards games either. I cannot afford to support multiple gaming consoles. I picked the one that performed most task I could on a PC, my previous platform. Xbox Live is amazing. The PS3 is my Blu-Ray player, nothing more. But when others ask my opinion on a gaming machine, I will let them decide for themselves by allowing them to play on either console and make their own decision. I would ratter have a friend gaming on a PS3, than not gaming at all.

I meant that you were biased towards HD-DVD because of your devotion to Microsoft and apparent dislike of Sony. I was joking, for the most part...

Back on topic (what was the topic again?)

If no one else is having any freezes or delays while playing Blu-Ray movies on the PS3 then I will return my unit as it must be defective. I just assumed it was normal as the only other person I know that also owns a PS3 has the same problem.

I am a movie buff and it really annoys me when a movies freeze while watching, even if not for more than a second. A good movie draws you into the action, to the point you forget you are just watching a movie. A freeze in the middle of the movie kills that illusion. Dual Layered DVDs suffered a lot of this problem when switching from one layer to the next layer.

BTW, I can now confirm that Blu-Ray is gone mainstream. My local grocery store had a huge display of cheesy B-Movies released on Blu-Ray for $9.99 each.

Yeah I've said it before... I've had my PS3 since March 2007 and it is solely for the use of Blu-Ray movies. I have watched well over 40 or so maybe even more (because I've rented every single BluRay from lovefilm.com) and have had no freezes or problems with any.
