Opinions on the Master Chief

What do you like about the master chief? What do you think makes it a fun and immersive experience to play this character?
Also, are there any things you would change?

Nothing. Hes a completely generic character, so generic in fact Bungie wont even give him a face.

Masterchief is a robot as far as i'm concerned.

Ninjachief would have made a better character - The soldier who is trained in the ancient art of the Ninja then given a gun.

I liked the character of masterchief overall. I feel like bungie wanted to leave him completely open, so that you could insert your own personality into the character. They designed their character to make sure you really didn't have an opinion either way. You didn't like him too much, but you didn't dislike him either.

I've played many games (Getaway, Assassin's Creed, COD4 and to an extent the Prince of Persia series), where the main character annoyed me with his "personality". In video games I attempt to suspend my disbelief and try to let myself pretend I'm actually a part of the game. This "immersion" into the game can only be achieved if the character is believeable, but still allows you to insert some of yourself into him. The best example I have of this would be Bioshock ... that game is superb at telling a story without forcing the main character into a ceratin mold ... the character is who you want him to be in your head.

I think the Halo series didn't do a terrific job of this, but I can tell that they tried to keep the MC as vanilla as possible on purpose, not b/c they are inept as a design studio.

It is my humble opinion that MC was abused sexually as a young child, and has now choosen to take out his post-traumatic feelings of anger on a group of fun loving, happy go lucky aliens, who just want to believe in the greater good.

These poor aliens came from afar, looking to spread their message of good tidings and promoting the promise of a greater, brighter future for the whole universe. A future devoid of the flood.

And what do the humans do? We send in that brute of a space marine, complete with his "No-means-no" crotch protector to wipe them out.

Master Chief, you make me sick.

Most people on these forums hate Halo as a general rule ... I'm pretty sure most of them only owned PS2s and therefore didn't play Halo2 ... and therefore suck at Halo3 ... and therefore like to pretend it's terrible.

I love Halo, and yes I owned a PS2, played Tiger Woods on it last night actually. And no i haven't played Halo 2, however, I am going to play Halo 1 & 2 as soon as I find a decent used copy. Anyone know where I could get one from? I really don't want to clog my HD up with the downloadable versions.

First, how'd you know my dad did/does that? I never told anyone and....um....you know what? nevermind.....

Second, while unfortunate, I did expect the thread to degenerate. Nevermind the character himself, its the game, the Halo series that has polarized a great deal of gamers. Like the noble tomatoe fruit, there are few (very few) people on the fence. You either love tomatoes, or you hate them, with little left in between. Similar to Halo, you either love the games or you hate them. No one is devoid of an opinion on the Halo series, be it good (agreeing with me! lol) or bad (saying 'Halo sux!!11.11').

Trying to get into an indepth discussion about the MC cannot, has not and will not grow around here. Great group of guys mostly, just too bad most aren't sharing our view of H3 being so damned good.

I totally agree with that - but you made this thread about one game character only - Master Chief.

My favourite game playing character is Lara Croft.

I agree, most people around here are not going to contribute positively to the how do you like master chief as a character discussion ...

I'm just saying if you didn't own an XBOX and Halo 1 &2, please shut up ... you do not have a valid opinion on the subject.

We do need to get a game going soon ... Civ that is! In seriousness, we should get another game together. I'm trying to get my rank up in SWAT, but it's super hard unless you have a couple of hours to get a decent party together.

Could be the number one most annoying character of all time. His stupid high pitched voice, always giving non-sensical advice.

TBH, I'd rather try to get a game of Halo going. I hate hate hate HATE playing with randoms. It never fails that I'll get stuck with idiots. I'll be on most of tonight.

worst/most annoying character, how about any of the myriad of AI controlled characters meant to aid you in FPS/3rd person games? I see the 'artificial' part, but where's the 'intelligence'?

Mass, my crew plays every Sunday night. Now we do not always play Halo 3 (mostly Gears of War and Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 lately), but I am sure that Halo 3 will be played again soon. Come join us.

On topic:

Master Chief is a great character but unless you actually read the Halo novels, you do not get to meet the real Master Chief.

In the Halo games, he is who you want him to be. If you play aggressively, to you Master Chief is an aggressive character, if you play cautiously, then for you Master Chief will be of a cautious nature. You will remember Master Chief the way you played the game. This is one of the great things about the character.
