This sounds like a real fanboyish thing to do, but I need help.

My friend thinks the PS3 will totally defeat the X360, and refers to the Xbox 360 as the Dream60 (Dream cast.)

I tell him about all the games and Xbox-live, but he just replies with " 360 has backwards compat. issues and PS3 has HDMI support."
and how we have to buy seperate peripherals to level with the PS3. (HD-DVD drive.)

I know it sounds pathetic, but I'm fed-up of him winning all these battles, any little comments I could say to him?

Make sure he reads page 2 and especially the last note (#10) on page 2. This note alone is the reason why the 360 will never leave the market..
Regarding his PS3 shit. Ask him if he knows that sony ones worked together with nintendo to create a CD addon for the SNES but then stole the whole console idea to make a SNES with CD and call it PlayStation.

If all fails, like MrMoen says, show him the Ridge racerrrrrr clip and laugh hard in his face while pointing to him.

Dreamcast was expected by Sega to sell 3.7 mill units its first year and fell short. 360 is at over 5 million in 6 months.

A similar powered machine. With a huge catalogue of quality games out today. The PS3 will cost $599. One year later than a similarly powered machine that was $200 cheaper at its launch. Did I already mention it's bloody $599 for a machine that does nothing more than a $399 360 that was already available a year ago? Ow wait, for those 200 bucks you do get a useless BluRay player that nobody cares about until 2008~2009 when the format wars have settled and there's finally affordable movies coming out for it.

Try playing HDMI support. I am playing 10 360 games today. Having said that, who cares about HDMI. Sony supports it for one reason: being able to apply cutthroat DRM to your BluRay movies. Apart from that, the component cable you get with your $399 Xbox 360 (did I mention the PS3 is $599 already?) gives exactly the same quality output, and optical sound cable is actually better than HDMI's sound support.

Yeah. We have this thing called choice to get all the useless stuff that makes the PS3 this expensive. And in the end, if you choose to buy all the useless stuff, it's cost you about the same amount of money.

Oh man this thread sucks. Enough with the god-damn crabs and weapon changes. Curry I hate to break it to you but the 360 hasn't outsold the Dreamcast yet, due to shortages. The 5 million you're talking about are either shipped consoles or is a target for the next E3 or something.

Back on topic: why do you want to convince your friend so badly? Why does it matter to you if he wants to wait for the PS3? You know he's not the only one... And yes, the PS3 is ahead of the Xbox 360 with their optical medium (Blu Ray) and no MS's HD-DVD addon has nothing to do with games. He's got a point with the 'buying extra peripherals' stuff, Xbox 360 should've had a standard hard drive. About the backwards compatability issues: you try running x86 code on a PPC proccessor. I've heard programmers say that the fact that they even got one game running is a little miracle. Sony has said that the first couple of PS3 models will have hardware emulation like the PS2 did but later on they're also going to step over to software emulation (like the Xbox 360). It remains to be seen if that's going to work out better than the 360...

It didn't? The figure I mentioned was official, it fell short of projected 3.7 mill in its first year (forget that I'm linking to The Register, their source is trustworthy in this case). Whereas NPD claims that despite shortages the Xbox 360 has sold 3.2 million worldwide up to 31/3/2006. Extrapolating a monthly US sales of 250k with similar numbers in Europe and some sales in Australia, Japan and other Asian countries, that would add about 3*600k for April, May and June. In my calc.exe 3.2 million plus 1.8 million is 5 million.

you could mention the cell processor, wonderful floating point performance but crap at any real processing like A.I. calculation. There are too many rumour regarding low yields on the cell, they dropped a SPE (1 of the smaller processors) and they are talking about dropping the speed to 2.8ghz.

The Nvidia RSX is slightly under powered compared to the 360 ATI gpu and 12 months to the market late.

Bluetooth. Maybe I am the only one with trouble on the bluetooth front but I cant use bluetooth over the same range as I can the 360's wireless controller at home.

sony online is seriously poor at the moment, will it be there when the ps3 launches, if it is (which I doubt) it will be serious buggy or work very badly.

xbox live arcade (when they get around to releasing some games)

hdmi doesnt float since the lesser ps3 model ships without it.

and if all that fails, just laugh and ask if he'd like to play some graw co-op.

That's actually a rational decision. It was decided long ago to always enable only 7 of the 8 SPE's simply because they run the biggest risk of being affected by waferstepping problems. There's always a level of loss involved in producing complex IC's, and dropping 1 SPE by definition is just a logical decision imo to maintain highest possible yields without compromising dramatically on performance (7 or 8 SPE's doesn't make that much a difference).

That's quite a persistent rumor indeed. Would pit the 2.8Ghz CPU against 3 3.2Ghz CPU's, with 7 SPE's having to make up for lacking 2 cores and a bunch of clock speed. As a programmer I have some serious doubts there.

Apart from the range problem, which is indeed a fact (my 360 controllers have far more range than my BT equipment as well) Bluetooth also has a lot of protocol overhead making it slower to respond. And pairing is just a bitch.

@Curry: I saw some recent figures of Xbox 360 hardware sales on NeoGAF and it didn't break the 5 million marker yet, NeoGAF appears to be down so I'll get back to you later with those figures. And concerning the 'giant enemy crab' thing; sure the topicstart was lousy but we can still discuss Xbox 360 vs PS3 in an educated way instead of screaming quotes from the Sony Press Conference right?

Here's the deal:
$499 for the cheap version you get a PS3 with 20GB HDD, without HDMI, WiFi and memory card slots.
$599 for the 'premium' version with 60GB, with HDMI, WiFi and memory card slots.

The problem with the core pack for Xbox 360 is that developers can't really use the hard drive since their games have to work on core packs as well, a problem Playstation dev's aren't facing. The $299 pricepoint is a very smart strategic choice though.
