Default 360 playing original XBOX games

I own Halo, Halo 2, DOA 3 and a couple of more.

With Halo for example they did a great job by getting it in 720p widescreen, it all looks better then on the original XBOX.

Great! But there are also some games that run with black lines on both sides not being brought to 720p.

How is that with Forza 1? Did they do the great job getting it in 720p or not? This game is now with a discount for 15 Euro's or 19,95 Euro's with 3 months of live @ Dutch store Dixons

The thing is that the engine has to support widescreen itself fundamentally. If the game engine does its distance clipping or viewport culling based on hardcoded 4:3 it's hard to upscale it without letterboxing because it's no longer a case of emulation but of rewriting the engine. Would be bad coding ofcourse, but hey you never know what developers thought: the Xbox 1 was never supposed to send output in HD

For Halo and Halo 2 the guys at Bungie did a lot of work on the B/C stuff so I assume they made sure it all went silky smooth obviously.

I don't think they managed that, I sometimes get this weird (what I like to call) Shadowing. Wherever I spawn, a light shadow outline of the map that is visible at that time will remain there, wherever I go.

Is that true what you are saying there? That the XBOX 1 was never supposed to send output in HD?

I don't think so. I have an original XBOX with a MS HD Pack for my original XBOX. It's connected to my HDTV with component cable. There are several XBOX 1 games running in native 720p. That's HD output on XBOX 1.

Read here which games:

http://www.hdtvarcade.com/hdtvforum/...tom&page=xboxa

But allright that's just for information.

So again my question. Halo does 720p with 4 x AA on a 360, will Forza 1 do the same?

And it also gave the optical dolby digital 5.1 output for me so that was a nice extra on the HD pack.

But well. So you or anybody else around here don't know if the 360 upscales Forza to 720 p and 4 x AA?

Forza has or had framedrop problem also. Same thing, almost unplayable. Last timed I tried it was about a week after launch, and now I don't own it anymore.
I don't know about the upscaling though.

Pro Evo 5 runs like a dream, but only fills the screen of my 32" HD tv if I set the 360 to output at 480p - otherwise, it's a square in the middle of the screen, which is very very annoying.

For Forza I suppose. So how does Forza run at your 360?

720p? widescreen?

4 x AA in place?

Without framedrops?

Well I think I found the answer, all original xbox games are done in 720p. When they can run on xbox in 16:9 widescreen it will have no black lines left & right.

The only thing unsure about is the 4 x AA which Halo has implemented, if it also is done with Forza.

And ofcourse, more people that know if the framedrops were only a problem at first with the emulator and if it has been repaired with the latest updates

OK I'm not a tech expert, but here's my findings...

No black borders for me, and also no in-game drop in framerate.

It suffers a little from looking washed-out, although that's probably just because I'm playing in standard def on my high-def TV.

It seems to be slower than I remember though, I didn't get a huge sense of speed, that's probably just because I've spent loads of time playing NFS:MW and Moto GP recently.

I don't know whether it's 4xAA, how do you tell? I'm uploading a video of it running on my 360, give me a few mins and I'll post the link, maybe you can tell for yourself

In summary: it's smooth, it's still a great game, I actually got it for £5 off eBay a few weeks back (because I'm thinking of buying a couple of cars which feature in the game and I wanted to experiment with paintjobs etc) and after that quick play I just had, I really want to get into it again. And I definitely can't wait for a hi-def Forza 2.

OK, here's a video, it might work, it might not.

I suggest right-clicking and saving it, then opening in Quicktime Player.

<snip>

edit: can't get link to work, I'll try plan B, see my next post

Studley that's great. So it's 16:9 widescreen probably on 720p. The 4 x AA you should be able to tell to run it on original XBOX and then on 360. Watch the edges of the car and other details on edges. Do they look smoother or better to say lines that fit more into the whole screen and so on.

Will see your link lateron in the afternoon have to leave for a birthday now. Thanks!

OK, I uploaded the movie to my own webspace instead. I don't have much bandwidth so I can only leave it up for 24hrs:

http://www.neilstudd.com/temp/forza.mov

- just in case it's not clear, the black bits around the edge is my TV itself, rather than borders around the picture.

I don't have an original Xbox any more (hence why I grumble a bit in the posts about backwards-comaptibility) so I can't judge it against that. I think you'll agree it still looks pretty good though.

I've heard complaints that it's not great over Live though. Well I typed "forza on 360" into Google, and found this thread at IGN, that's what I'm basing that on.

Enjoy the birthday party, don't eat too much cake! (Or at least save me a slice...)

Thanks Studley, at least I know now that Forza runs smooth in single player on 16:9 720p. The 4 x AA it's hard to tell. When my 360 returns from repair centre, I will check the differences.

For sure, I will get Forza, with 3 months of Live for 19,95 for sure now. Thanks again for getting the video up! Well the birthday party was allright, and did eat al sort of stuff. So what would you like besides that slice of cake, some cheese or toast with egg-salade, a beer or some wine?

I'll post my findings overhere of Forza comparing from original XBOX and 360 if I can manage to get the copy in the special offer

It doesn't have enough screenbuffer for 6x aa and 16x af. There's a whole lot of technobabble behind it, but in the end the 360 GPU allows for "free" anti-aliasing without using actual processing time if that framebuffer isn't used for anything else (devvers can also elect to make other fancy stuff with it).

Usually you can safely assume games have 4x AA enabled, and it's not configurable by the user.
