Just use the cable that you hook up to the modem. Or you could buy on of those system link kit's with the hub that hooks 4 xbox's together.

Or just have him hook his xbox up to the router and bam your system linked..

I'd expect you'd need a cross-cable (yes, simple as that ).

Regular ethernet cables are used for connection routers to computers. For connecting computers to computers you need a crossed ethernet cable

By the way externally they might look the same to you, so be sure to label your cross cable to be able to differentiate it from a non-cross cable.

If you're going to make one yourself, here's the layout:

They usually got either "straight" or "crossed" or something comparable written on them next to the CAT specification

If your connecting 2 original xbox you need the cross cable. I believe the 360 doesn't require that anymore.

Are you talking about an original or 360? the reason I ask is I would like to know if the improved the system link in #3 on the 360. COD2 would let you system link, but only 1 person on a system, which sucked. Only reason COD2 didnt beat out Halo2 for multiplayer. Haven't tried linking COD3 yet.

if you have a local computer store (i.e. an independant store not a pcworld) they might have the cripper tool and will be able to rewire the straight through cables you have, just means cutting one of the ends off.

I have the tool here, they arent expensive.

"The old System Link setup meant that only the System Link cable (also known as a cross-over cable) could be used to hook up one Xbox to another. It worked, but the technology was antiquated. You can now be satisfied that any current network cable should get the job done for you."

via http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/a...iew-cables.htm

This wasn't the exact article i was looking for, but close enough.

I've just tried a "straight" and a "twist-pair" cable but neither work (unless I need to do something else too). Selecting <System Link> option in Halo I get the message:
"Could not detect network connection. Please ensure the cable is not disconnected"
Do I need to do more than just plug in the cable?
